And every one of those musicians is also (and first and foremost) a rifleman!

My old roommate spent six years in the Presidents Own. He got tired of having no life and became a "retread" as an ejection seat mechanic. Some people were just not meant to turn a wrench. We would put him on the turtle back of a Phantom and he'd play the harmonica for us while we worked. Still have never seen anyone play like him. -Anymouse

Back in ancient Japan, workers would hire a Samisen player for when they were doing rough repetitive work. Some times it would be a land owner using hired rice planters. The instrument needed to be loud so a blind player developed a large body Samisen. To this day players tend to keep their eyes closed when playing.

Each year this band marches from their home to the grave site of this march's composer and performs it on his birthday, November 6. The cemetery throws John Philip Sousa a wonderful party each year open to the public. Highly recommended.

Stu - I too used to think all Marines are riflemen, but learned it's not a requirement for the USMC Band. I've gone to a bunch of the Marine Band concerts at 8th and I, and I learned from some of the members I talked that the United States Marine Band members are the only Marines who are not required to go through boot camp and be riflemen. They are hired directly as professional musicians after rigorous auditioning and only undergo military training as to Marine dress, customs and regulations.

Thanks, Tailgunner, although that's disappointing. - 1/21/17, 7:12 AM
