While most Americans were happy to celebrate their independence ...

Wednesday, July 4, while most Americans were happy to celebrate their independence by shooting fireworks and eating hot dogs, some decided to exercise their independence by … suggesting it should never have happened?

Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King declared on Twitter Wednesday that “the 4th of July was always been a sham. Always,” in response to Frederick Douglass’ 1852 essay, “What, to the slave, is the Fourth of July?” Though King told his fans to “read it all,” apparently King didn’t read the part where Douglass praised the founding of the United States.
Senator Kamala Harris, D-Calif., tweeted that “it was eight immigrants who signed the Declaration of Independence.” She did not clarify why these signers should be considered immigrants, given that the United States did not even become a nation until 1783, seven years after the Declaration was signed.

Vox posted an article declaring three reasons the American Revolution was a mistake — yes, really — suggesting America should instead have become another Canada. One of the three reasons? Our form of democratic republic doesn’t always get the results the writer wants, even after a lot of hot air and community organizing — and parliamentary monarchy is better. Yes, really.
