This may be of interest to the regular people out there (who aren't  EE's),  I think there are some in the same boat as I.  Moving up to the next generation computer  presented me with a few problems to solve, chief of  which is importing video from the VCR, and video camera --  that only has RCA outputs?   There ain't no RCA inputs on this computer.   Alongside Woot, my favorite vendor is Monoprice.  They seem to sell everything by way of cables, connectors, converters, and adapters - at insanely inexpensive prices --  for very high quality merchandise!  Whew. I ordered this Tuesday, it arrived today.  I installed it in 5 minutes; had it recording in 10.  So, if you're wondering how to get your old tapes (or even capture movies from the TV) onto your new computer, this'll work,   You're welcome.

Since the top commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, issued strict new guidelines on the use of airstrikes, the United States has turned nearly every plane in its inventory into an eye in the sky. Sending video down to those ROVER terminals has become job No. 1 for most American air crews flying today. And U.S. troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan have come to depend on the feeds. “For sure,” Lt. Col. Greg Harbin told the Los Angeles Times, “I would be dead without this technology.” Still, some Air Force officers downplayed the significance of the ROVER’s security hole. “If you’re an insurgent, you need to know when and where [aircraft] are flying and then be within the line-of-sight footprint of the feed for any chance of successfully using the information real-time,” one officer writes. “This is much to do about nothing. You have bigger fish to fry.” ”

“ Rodger - FYI - I had two computer drive me crazy over the past week. I knew something was wierd when it happened on both on the same day. I think I found the problem. Just be aware in case this happens to you too. - m >>>    User’s computer exhibited the following symptoms today:    1. System would boot fine, and work without any problems when offline    2. As soon as you connected it to the internet you would see a drastic spike in CPU usage, mainly caused by the svchost.exe process.    3. The CPU usage would spike up to 100% and stay there making the machine unbearably slow    4. Scanning with Symantec NIS 2007, Spybot and Windows Defender did not find any viruses or spyware    5. Examining the running processes with Sysinternals Process Explorer and HijackThis did not show any suspicious behavior Apparently this is a very common issue and few people have a solution for it. Because so many different services are dependent on svchost.exe there is no catch-all solutions. Here's everything you need to know about Firefox 3, Beta 5.  I'm glad I read it, because even though I found it nearly bullet proof, I went back to Firefox 2 because my  life was unbearable;le without RoboForm.  I haven't tried this yet, but will. “ Now that you're running Firefox 3 the first thing it'll tell you is that your extensions aren't compatible with the new version. Don't panic. It's true that many Firefox extension developers haven't updated their add-ons to work with Firefox 3. But in many instances, this is just a matter of the extension reporting back to the application that it isn't yet compatible, even though the add-on might work anyway. Instead of waiting for your favorite extensions to get updated, you can tell Firefox to enable them no matter what. There are two ways to do this: Download the Nightly Tester Tools extension. Once it's installed and you've restarted, your Firefox 3 Add-ons dialog will have a "Make all compatible" button, as pictured. Press that puppy to make your extensions work with Firefox 3 (after a restart, that is). Note that you may still get a message about extensions that don't "provide secure updates" even after hitting this button. Use about:config as detailed below for a workaround to the secure updates issue. Here's the rest ... ” I did find one bug in 3.o, and reported it.  I am unable to use Zazzle's make-a-coffee mug program.  Other than that, it looks like a clean program.  One other thing.  Like magic, Firefox 2 no longer leaks memory like a sieve.  Go figure.

I just did this with my Canon Power Shot A560.  There are so many new options I don't know where to begin, but if you're a camera bug, you will. “ Digital cameras have powers beyond what is immediately available to the user. On a standard Canon, for example, the fastest shutter speed option offered is 1/1,600 second, but the hardware can handle much more than that -- up to 1/60,000 of a second. CHDK, the Canon Hacker's Development Kit, is an open-source software project that can be loaded on cameras using Canon's DIGIC II or DIGIC III firmware platforms. It unleashes new features including RAW file format, live histogram display, a battery readout, and the ability to run scripted actions on a camera. CHDK does not replace the existing firmware on your Canon, so the process is completely reversible. The existing firmware stays intact, while the CHDK software is loaded on demand from an SD card. ”

Word to the wise

Avast Virus Scan identified Win32 Bmcentral as a Trojan Horse.  I promptly consigned it to the underground, super secret "Chest,"  where spies are subjected to indescribable  torture and mutilation.   La-la-la-la-la ... Hey!  WTFF?  Mouse don't work.  Keyboard don't work.  In fact, nothing attached to my satellite USB HUB ain't.  *Smell of brain burning*  I know!  Win32 Bmcentral was not an evil TH.  It is a benevolent, and integral part of my operating system!  Duh.  After undoing the action,  everything returned to normal.  A Google check confirms that I'm not the only poor sap to get caught by this.  Bad Avast!
