Infrared-ed Meats

TECHNO THRILLS

It's in my nature to sell things that I'm super pleased with, which is why,  I suppose, that even with a PhD in Astrophysics,  and a degree in culinary arts from the Culinary Institute of America, I've spent my life in sales and marketing. So ...

My kids Father's Day gifted me  this Char-Broil infrared grill, and I was underwhelmed. Boorishly churlish, actually.  I was perfectly happy with my massive  ten year old chunk of stainless steel that often still worked, and saw it as a power move by my dear wife to get it off the deck.  Now, I can't get over how this deal does what it does, but Horry Clap!

It is almost impossible to overcook something.  Srsly.  I've forgotten to check burgers, chicken, etc, and they look burned to a crisp, but no!  The burgers are juicy, chicken too. How you get infrared without electricity is still a mystery, but it evidently does.   Also, if you leave it on for about 10 mins after you finish cooking it cleans itself.  Just brush it off.  Nobel prize.

By the bye, last night I placed a baking pan with frozen onion rings on the upper rack while our meat cooked below. They were uber crispy (best ever, actually), and no oil! Oh, this too
it will quickly heat to 700ยบ +, so pizza is an obvious candidate.

You're welcome.

Amazing Math

Gary Larsen

                                                                    NUMBERS

Perhaps after seeing yesterday's godawful example of educational malpractice (Common Core Math), the erstwhile vocalist in my band, The Chestnuts, Guy du Francois, sent me this Amazing Mathematics.

Pretty quick into I it I thought satirically, "Oh, another Darwin evolution."  Turns out that was the point, so Darwinists may want to skip this one and avoid the angst, and cut me from thier travel list.  Sigh.
If we must, boys and girls, deviate from tried and true basic math education, here is a damned good example of stuff that works, and would appeal to kid's desire to one-up their parents.  I truly wish Sister Margaret Eleanor had pulled this out of her habit in my way back.  I love it.

Refrigerator and Freezer

Consumer Report
Electrolux Refrigerator and Freezer
Another Premium Service from TRKOF

And they're silent!
Electrolux Refrigerator Freezer

And they're silent!
The Freezer (Roll)

The Refrigerator (Roll)

Just before Christmas MoSup prevailed. We replaced our Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer.  We bought them 20 years ago, and during that time we paid the purchase price again in repairs, but I loved the look.  Yes, they were the most poorly engineered and built appliances we ever owned.  It was a battle keeping the lower housing from rusting out - a battle we eventually lost.  And they made noises, according to she who must be obeyed.  Noises I did not hear.  Let me tell you about MoSup's hearing.

Last week she was sitting in the sun room and heard munching.  That would be insects munching on leaves.  On a tree in our neighbors yard.  She told him; he inspected,  and lo!  Caterpillars.  She heard bugs eating. Anyway ... .

The real reason I fought replacing them was the $$.  It was going to cost us around $15,000 for Sub Zeros.  NFW.  We both agreed on that.  What we bought then, finally, were Electrolux units that she discovered. Did you know Electrolux made refrigerators?  We didn't. The sale price from a local,  family owned appliance store was approx.  $2700.  For the pair.  Installed.  With removal of the Sub Zero carci.

Once installed I did some bitching and moaning about space, etc., but it was what it was - a done deal.  Now, six months later, an evaluation.
DEAL OF THE CENTURY
Although the footprint for both units is 11 inches narrower than the Zero's, the freezer has the same storage capacity, thanks to very clever compartmenting.  And it has an ice maker that works (the Sub Zero's broke, and the replacement was $420, so we did this). The refrigerator, if it has less space it's not noticeable, again thanks to very clever use of space.  When I'm happy with something, I pass it on, FWIW.  So far these units are FIVE STARS. I bet MoSup is happy I talked her into them.

Perp Spray

Tip o' teh Day

As for the Wasp spray, the good thing is the range of this stuff... most of the commercial wasp sprays will shoot about 40 feet. Pepper Spray and mace usually about 15... so it's "higher caliber".

As a kid, I had wasp spray hit me in the eyes, and I was instantly disabled... couldn't see a thing until after about 20 minutes of flushing them with water and thrashing around because it burned so badly. It puffed them up for about a day and a half too... so your "perp" will be easily identifiable.... plus he will reak of pyrethrin, so he won't be carrying bugs to the jailhouse.

Mo Sup heard about wasp and hornet spray's effectiveness against home intruders, a looming prospect as Obamunism takes its toll.  I'd never heard about this, or paid attention if I did, until she came home with two cans yesterday.  Did a little searching, which verified that this stuff will disable a perp on the spot.  Pepper spray is useless against guys pumped up on meth, and such; no idea if this is better.  Still, I like it.

Oh, there was this caveat from some of the people who've ruined this country.

Analysis: U.S. residents tempted to avail themselves of this Internet-recommended self-defense option would do well consider that wasp spray is a pesticide, and federal law prohibits the use of any pesticide "in a manner inconsistent with its labeling."
You're welcome.

Kill Silverlight

Trouble watching videos?
Uninstalling Microsoft's piece of crap
"Silverlight" will probably clear that right up.

Boned Jello
Thanks to JMcD for the tip. Siverlight is  Microsoft's interface for watching stuff like NetFlix movies on line. Its only function appears to be keeping you from copying any portion of the content.   It will reinstall when you need it again.

If you're having trouble with Firefox, but like your add-ons, etc., get the IE Tab add-on.  It lets you view content using the IE interface in Firefox.

Video transfer

Today's Grabber

Boned Jello

This may be of interest to the regular people out there (who aren't  EE's),  I think there are some in the same boat as I.

Moving up to the next generation computer  presented me with a few problems to solve, chief of  which is importing video from the VCR, and video camera --  that only has RCA outputs?   There ain't no RCA inputs on this computer.

Alongside Woot, my favorite vendor is Monoprice.  They seem to sell everything by way of cables, connectors, converters, and adapters - at insanely inexpensive prices --  for very high quality merchandise!  Whew.

I ordered this Tuesday, it arrived today.  I installed it in 5 minutes; had it recording in 10.  So, if you're wondering how to get your old tapes (or even capture movies from the TV) onto your new computer, this'll work,   You're welcome.

Sea Change

Inquiring mind ...

Boned Jello

I've asked this before as an aside, or a comment,  but I really do want to know.  In the event that, say, the entire left coast fell into the sea, would California, Oregon and Washington's congressional delegation be unseated?  When?    Who decides?  I think this needs to be settled anon! I've been praying real hard, and there's a " tingling."

SMART USB Data Transfer

Techno Boners

Boned Jello

Last week I asked "what is this and why did I buy it? " about the ZyXEL.  I found out it was an early device to set up a wireless connection,  so I plugged it in last night and it worked by connecting my old PC to the internet, for whatever that was worth.

I have never-ever been successful in setting up a working home network, and this attempt was no exception  But wait! I had another Woot purchase in my WTF? box.  A Smart USB cable transfer device I purchased  for $14.95 delivered.  What the hell, I just plugged it in; intuitively linking the two computers.  It instantly showed up as a CD Drive (L:) Easy Suite. I clicked it.   HFS!  This is something everybody who will one day migrate to a new computer, and that means everybody, should have.

It gives me access to every file on the old computer, so instead of going back and copying a file to a flash drive and then going to the new computer for installation, it's all there.  This will be no revelation to the many computer smart denizens reading this, but for the average Joe, this is wonderful morning boner!

Paint Shop Pro X-12

Mea Minema Culpa

Last Tuesday, a week, I wrote that after buying Paint Shop Pro, Corel had turned it into a clone of Corel Studios.  But, I posited, at $19,95 it was a can't-lose proposition.  I misspoke.

Maybe PSP 10, Corel's first post acquisition release was disappointing,  but PSP X12 is like getting behind the familiar wheel of the family car, and finding  a new engine, tires, GPS, and leather seats.  It's really wonderful, and I would have paid the full upgrade price had I known.  Comes with excellent video tutorials too.  What a steal!  If this deal comes around again, don't hesitate if you're in the market.

Crime Television

self medication

Boned Jello
My DVR Contents

I've recently had a voracious appetite for crime story television.  In these matters I simply indulge myself without trying to analyze why.  Yesterday, however,  while watching  the law nail the identity of a serial killer, I felt a gusher of Seratonin hit my brain.  I was instantly filled with a sense of well being  A satisfying sense of order enveloped me. Why?  Self analysis was easy.

I feel we're living in lawless times. Following the political scene as I do, I've become pretty hollow and emotionless much of the time.  Crime upon crime stack-up with no appropriate response.  The government is corrupt;  the media are corrupt; the courts are corrupt.  Here then are examples of things working the way they ought to.  People run, and are caught.   People lie, and have those lies meticulously exposed. People murder, and are executed.  Order is restored.   Good is still possible.  What a rush.
