Apocalypto and The Help

HLLYWD
Two Movies  (UPDATED)

I was aware that Mel Gibson made Apocalypto, but this was after his (5-Star) The Passion of the Christ (Full movie viewable here) caused Hollywood declare war on Mel.  The reviews then were not sufficient to make me overcome my aversion to paying to see Hollywood crap.  Last night, in celebration of my Netflix portal on ROKU being magically restored, I watched it on my SONY 46" 1060 HD in complete darkness, with audio delivered through my Sennheiser ear phones. Incredibly enough, you can watch it in its entirety here.

HMFS!

If you've not seen this picture dealing with the last days of the Mayan civilization, before the Spaniards arrived— words fail me.  If you took the opening 30-minute sequence from Saving Private Ryan, and extended for another 106-minutes,  you have Apocalypto's level of intensity.  It 's brilliant!, and 5 Star () terrific.  Had it been made by a leftist icon like Oliver Stone, or Steven Spielberg,  I'm  convinced it would have been the 2006  favorite to win 7-8 Oscars.  WOW!

Now, while I was watching the Mayans in all their gory glory, MoSup was in another room watching The Help on her PPV 32" screen.  When I asked how she liked it, she squealed giddily,  like a virgin on her marriage bed.  She loved , and gave it her imprimatur.  Since we have access to it for another day or so, I'll watch it tonight.
UPDATE
I watched The Help last night and ... wait.  First the explanation:
  • Any man married to the same woman for 73¼ years will have undergone, through osmosis,  certain changes to his manly veneer. Like your Gran bolsa de bola peluda will have been draped with a lace cozy.  Okay?  Okay.
I loved the movie.  I did comment to MoSup that I felt there was a good deal of stereotyping.  Specifically, I said it was not believable that an entire group of women could be so hateful.  She said, "Well, you are so wrong."

Nevertheless, it was great adventure, and nicely acted.

PS -  (In case you wonder, I hated  Steel Magnolia's guts).

My wife liked The Help as well; me no so much. I saw it as just another film showing how mean and crappy white people are to black people.

I caught Apocalypto a few years ago on DVD and feel the same way.

It`s a brilliant movie even if propaganda for Catholicism and western civilization. The whole point of the movie was that final scene pointing out clearly who and what ended the Mayan savagery, and it sure was not any lefty liberal urbanites.

Just watched it last night. A good movie. Moved a little slow but then again we watched Sherlock the night before.

One thing I liked in "Apocalypto" was the escalating scale of the threat. It moved from the individual, to the village, to the society to the continental with arrival of the Europeans.
I don' recall anyone else making note of that but it's not like a read every movie review. And I thought it was well and subtly done.

I liked the Mayan movie well enough, didn't think it was great. I doubt I'll bother with The Help, don't much like uppity White People movies set in the Jim Crow South. Now, if Spielberg would make a cross between The Help and Apocalypto I'll be there ‘cause I love happy endings.

Apocalyto is the book end to Naked Prey (which emulated John Coulter's escape and running battle from the Black Feet). The Spanish ship at the end was just a stinger to the main theme. The movie was simply a chase thriller: the hero surviving against all odds to rescue his family. I love that the Commies in Latin America lambasted it but that the Mayans themselves LOVE Apocolypto.

I must have been out of the room when that part played?

A world without God's blessing will be much like the Mayan version, or were they Aztecs? Doesn't matter, they use the same cookbook.

Apocalypto is the answer to all who decry the arrival of white men in the New World. You should have seen the place before we got here.

I loved Apocalypto because the message is a triumph against "evil" by one man...more or less. It criticizes religious dogma, too.

The Help? Naw. I'll put on a terrific movie about race differences instead: Amistad. There's some real hope and change. "Give us free." Magnificent!

Another film that shows the brutal nature of Indians when whites first arrived, this time in North America, is The Black Robe. Anyone who thinks the whites were nasty to the Indians should see what was done by other tribes.

1060 HD? Where would you get equipment to display such an oddball format?

You only think you're getting 1080. The King counted them and found we're being shortchanged so naturally he's advertising it. What?

"Anyone who thinks the whites were nasty to the Indians should see what was done by other tribes."

There's a reason so many American tribes were extincted. They were cruel and inhuman beyond belief and would f'ing eat you after they tortured you for days. The idea of the "Noble Savage" was a myth. Back in that day the word savage wasn't used lightly.

I saw "Black Robe" many years ago. One of the dreariest films I ever saw. An hour and a half of my live and six bucks I'll never get back.

My remembrance is that I spent maybe 7 minutes watching the "Black Robe" rental.

Guess I am in the minority.. I liked Black Robe. It IMHO gave a far more accurate portrayal of the natives (Huron and Iroquois) than the PC Hollywood narrative would ever allow.

"Apocalypto" is a great movie.

You might try Bernal Diaz' "The Truthful History of the Conquest of New Spain" if you want an account of what it might have been like to be an 18 year old Spaniard witnessing this sort of thing (meaning human sacrifice on an industrial scale) for the first time.

Nerk, I'm with you. It's a great movie. It exemplifies the behavior or the woodland indians. Nothing like skinning someone alive while roasting them over a bonfire.
