Nobody move ....

Getting a little paranoid here.  My old HP running XP just out of the blue will not boot and all trace of Windows has disappeared.

My old Gateway with XP died about 4 months ago. We went to Staples and bought an HP with Windows 8.1. I am still trying to figure the *.1 out. And I can't get Microsoft Works Task Launcher to down-load. I have Firefox and have been kind of thinking about installing Linux, mainly because Rodger seems to swear by it.

you can try linux without any install at all. just burn a livecd distro (most of them) to a cd or usb stick. boot that. it won't touch your setup unless you specifically ask it to. when you reboot you'll be back to winders as is.

tl;dr: mint linux -> usb stick -> boot -> goof off -> reboot -> winders

Your CMOS battery's probably dead. When that happens, everything goes away - you have no apparent disk drives or anything else. This is why I recommend that people turn on old systems every few weeks, just to keep the data in place.

What to do: fire it up, hit F2 or whatever takes you into BIOS. Reenter the missing parameters (like drive C:\ is a 360MB disk, for example). Save parameters, exit, and you should be up and running again - as long as you don't kill power to the machine.

Of course, if you don't know what's in the box, you'll likely have to open it and write stuff down before powering on.

I've resurrected several machines at work because of this issue.

Have fun.

While I'm an IT professional for 20+ years providing desktop support across all major OS's I'll not take sides. I will however recommend Classic Shell

for those who hate the Windows 8.1 interface.

Totally off subject, but while you dither about your computer problems, the following story is running on The Blaze: Caught on Video: "Furious Man Confronts Police Officers After a Cop Entered His Private Property and Shot His ‘Best Friend’ in the Head."

When are law enforcement agencies going to learn that 10 you are somewhere you don't belong, 2) dogs, either calm or vicious, are SERIOUSLY territorial, and will defend that territory, whether a home, a yard, a car, or that tiny patch of sidewalk currently occupied by its Human companion.

Executing a "companion animal," whether trained to assist or just come occasionally when you call, is ABSOLUTELY uncalled for, especially If said animal hasn't drawn blood!

You couldn't find a better way to deal with the situation? Pepper spray? A TAZER? Yelling and screaming? You HAD to SHOOT it?

What if I came into your yard and you started hollering at me to get out? Would I be justified in shooting your sorry a*s just 'cause you're making noise?

Law enforcement officers are SUPPOSED to be basically intelligent. Are they too STOOOPID to keep from "going law enforcement" on a PET?

Or are they just "gun orgasmic?"
