You piqued my curiosity having been thinking about some solar backup. I looked at the Vivent website and I see vaporware. Graphs with no numbers, no tech information, all sales pitch.
Found this:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/solar-energy/vivint-solar.html

and it sounds like the results from too many franchise operations where the business expands too fast, the emphasis is on selling franchises, not training and customer service, and many franchisees are not competent to run a business and chaos follows.
Solar as a backup is appealing to me, but my little voice says beware of this one.

DICK: The deal with Vivant is, in our case, is they will sell us energy collected from "their panels" for 10.5 cents per kwh. Pur current cost is around 36 cents. If we use less than what is generated, the excess is sold back to BG&E and credited to us. There are ZERO costs involved for the installation; there are no battery devices involved. This all sounds pretty sweet. However, even while the sales guy was pitching us I Googled them. While there were just a few entries on the consumer page, all were negative. Yesterday the surveyor was here a 8AM and did a full roof sun collection survey on our roof and told us when he was finished that he's sure we will qualify and get panels. On the upside is the promise of reducing energy costs, and but also the positive effect it ought have when we sell. I sent the contract to our son who now living in Utah (Vivant's home). While going through the packet I noticed that the salesman did not leave his workup sheets. I feel uneasy which is why these queries.

HELLY - this is up your alley isn't it?

Rodge, Deep pocket SolarCity, with Elon Musk is prolly your best bet and best deal with going solar. One thing you have to be careful with is the placement of the panels on the roof. Some companies slap the panels up and the house visually looks like crap. Just sayin'.

1. Without batteries, the system is a backup only until the first sunset.

2. As I read various reviews, I conclude that Vivint doesn't do a very good job of managing their franchisees / subcontractors, or whatever the relationship is.

3.

4. FWIW, the largest system I built was 5KW, 100% off-grid on a ranch where I constructed a new Barndominium. (Yes, that's a word!)

Please keep us updated on the solar project. I'm thinking more and more about a family compound maybe in East Tennessee. I'm old enough that it really doesn't matter but I'm beginning to fear for my grand kids. I have one son-in-law interested and think the other will join when the time is right.

Dunno what happened to #3.
Oh, wait, that was the link now hidden behind "various reviews" in #2.

As a former employee of the predecessor company, I would say stay away.

This is something you could do yourself or hire a contractor to do.

Also sales 101, never leave unsigned paperwork behind with figures on it, they will never buy and just shop you around.

thoR! - the only reason we're interested about this is that everything is free. They make their money by selling us power for 10.5¢ per KWH. The rub is that they can raise it 2.9% every year if BGE prices increase. This is the area I need to get cleared up.
