Maryland Democrats find a cash Christmas Tree in Wal-Mart.

O Maryland, My Christmas Tree
In 1974, during halftime at a Maryland-Virginia  football game, in College Park, Virginia's pep band outraged us  homeboys. An announcer read from an oh-so-discourteous script, while the band - a Mack Sennet inspired ramshackle - played tunes like "Maryland, My Christmas Tree" (Maryland's anthem, "Maryland My Maryland," shares its melody with "O Christmas tree).  There were easy targets, like our about to be jailed Governor - Marvin Mandel (D), and erstwhile Gov. Spiro Agnew (R). I was in the crowd, and was way pissed .. then.  Now, it appears that the Cavalier pep band was onto something. (BTW, the script has been  immortalized) As expected, our socialists in miniature went ahead and socked us with another consumer tax.
"[Maryland's] Democrat-controlled General Assembly passed the law Thursday over the veto of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican. The party-line decision drew national attention and made Maryland the first state to legislate against Wal-Mart's health care policies.
The new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, directs companies with more than 10,000 employees in the state to dedicate at least 8 percent of payroll to employee health care or pay an equivalent amount into the state's Medicaid fund." - Wal-Mart considers future in Maryland
What I'd like to see done?  Take your pick from Column A.  What I realistically think will happen?  See Column B

COLUMN A
What I want
COLUMN B
What's Possible
  1. Meteor hits Maryland State House
  2. Gov. Ehrlich has a brain fart, declares martial law, hangs state democrats
  3. Wal-Mart, and every other affected employer in the state, shut their doors  immediately.
  4. # 3 causes citizens to demand #2
  1. Wal Mart quits Maryland
  2. Wal Mart sues in Federal Court
  3. Maryland citizens understand the ramification of this, and vote .. never-mind.  This belongs in Column A

I don't know much about Maryland politics aside from what makes the 'big' news (Rush), but there IS brilliance in that new law.

Like CA, at least big companies- whose presence would be a huge benefit to local/state economies- now know NOT to enhance your state and undermine their profits! Absolute brilliance!
(You must have a Dem majority in both houses like we do). joyce

Unfuckingbelievable! Let's do 12% and the employees will be even healthier! I guess the only bright spot is that money will not be skimmed on its way through the state drones' hands, but through private insurers.

It's a wonder there is any business left in Maryland between the socialists, the crooks in government (see socialists) and the incompetent slugs who enforce all this stomping all over initiative and smarts.

I betcha a whole bunch of the legislature are Cynthia McKinney and Ted Kennedy clones.

How about Wal Mart encloses a list of all the legislators that voted for this with every rifle they sell in the state.

A couple of points;

1. The law really only applies to WalMart - they are the only large employer in the state that does not already set aside that much percentage.

b) I expect that WM will create a "franchise" of one or two of their stores. This will decrease their employees.

iii) I am certain that WM will sue in Federal court as this is in violation of the Commerce Clause. It's one of the few situation where the CC is *supposed* to apply.
