Oval Office Commies

Today's Quiz

When was the last time the United States came as close as we are now, to having a full-fledged communist President?   I say it was  July 21, 1944.  Who knows why?  Who would argue?

On that day, Henry Wallace was kicked off the Dem ticket (he was currently Veep), to be replaced by Truman.

Here's Wallace:

"Wallace had said that if he became President, he would appoint Laurence Duggan as Secretary of State and Harry Dexter White as Secretary of Treasury. Both Duggan and White were Communist sympathizers who are now known to have been Soviet spies. Their appointment could have been a major victory for Soviet intelligence."

Roosevelt, of course, died the following April.

More on Wallace:

"He neither smoked nor drank nor swore nor partied nor small-talked. He did not enjoy the rough-and-tumble of politics. A frugal man, he lived modestly and disdained the amenities of life. He was married to a pleasant, nonpolitical woman: No one saw them kiss, nor did anyone see them fight. Politicians found him baffling. One said, "Henry's the sort that keeps you guessing as to whether he's going to deliver a sermon or wet the bed." .... Wallace began as vice president by removing the well-stocked bar and the well-used urinal his predecessor, John N. Garner, had installed in the vice presidential office in the Capitol."
