Remember in "Scrooged" (1988) where Robert Mitchum tells Bill Murray to start programming his TV network for pets and owners: "Put in characters that bounce bits of string or have mice run around..."
Surprised that its taking them this long to catch up.
Never forget: pet foods are marketed to people. They are made to look like something we'd like to eat or are healthy for humans. Notice all the vegetables in the Beneful ad. Looks like a nice beef stew. The problem is dogs don't eat corn, peas, or carrots nor do they need to. The starches and sugars in those vegetable add to canines being overweight. Also, check dog and cat food for rice or other grains. Don't buy those.
The same people that will yell "no people food!" for dogs will offer expensive "dog" food full of rice and vegetables. You should only give rich foods like cheese rarely as a treat, but cooked meats are excellent. When we're done with a chicken I'll pick a least one good meal for our small dog from it. If I have fish, I save some scraps for the cats. I have seriously considered buying a few goldfish as a treat for the cats. It they like them I might use the minnow trap in the nearby stream to catch free supplemental healthy treats for them.
