Going Balls Out Here Boss

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's natural, I suppose, to have a certain nostalgia for "The Good Old Days." Oui?   As things go, however, it's probably not the norm to look forward to  (in some fashion)  seeing our entire culture (the west coast) fall into the sea.  Hell, take Maryland as well.  Not that I'm asking God to get on with; but ... . Anyway, I was looking for something on the tubes and landed on this old "Tool Time."   I'd forgotten how good that show was.  Here is that episode, courtesy of Daily Motion".

Here's the link if all else fails.

The Plymouth

But... let's start from the beginning. In today's video, we'll tell you about a rare car that was underground for half a century. Who put it there and why? Let's find out

Buried 58 Plymouth

58 plymouthThat story about about the time capsuled '57 Plymouth struck a chord.  Shown right: I polish our brand new 1958 Plymouth Belvedere, the car I would later drive after getting my license.  Alas, almost immediately after getting said license I was  sent to pick my sister up at the Jr. High.  I turned into the school driveway and noticed she was with another girl. Was I going to show off?  Bet your ass. Put full pedal  and lost control while negotiation the curve.  Wound up with the car teeter tottering over a curb.  Our only car—and required extensive repairs which I was made to repay by becoming full time yard boy.  Worse, no car for a month.

A year later, me and best friend Wally were cruising about (although I was still only allowed to drive a total of 50 miles). Went to Beaver Springs, a local quarry everyone swam at.  Looking  for girls.  Bingo, two lassies leaving the Springs. Put full pedal, sending a rooster tail of gravel behind.  Slowed down, hit the reverse button. Whoops.  It seems you cannot use reverse while the car is still  moving forward, All sort of bad noise.  The girls laughed.  I couldn't back up.

58 plymouth
Wally pushed me back so I could try "D," which — thank God—  worked. Now, sitting at home were my parents and their best friends who'd flown in from Chicago.  The next day they were doing the DC tour—Arlington, FBI Bldg. etc. My bedroom was off the carport, so when I heard them piling into the car I prayed. Prayed that somehow the car would back out. No.  I heard dad exclaim "What the deuce!" Took me a summer of mowing lawns to pay for that one.

Good times.

This is my rifle. This is my ...

Qualified shooters will be able to purchase the rifles and pistols on a lottery basis, and will have to pass a background check both by the CMP and a the licensed FFL where they pick up their new guns.

The 100,000 1911s slated for the Civilian Marksmanship Program(CMP) have not yet been released, but Cheaper Than Dirt reports something nearly as cool is happening.

Approximately 100,000 Turkish and Philippine M1 Garands have been released to the CMP, and orders are currently being taken.

Former (Lord, I love saying that) President Barack Obama had signed an order releasing the 1911s and Garands to the CMP in theory, but never actually made them available (surprise, surprise), and shooters despaired the guns would never find their way to the U.S.

Worry no more!

PVT OBAMA
The CMP received the Garands over the last month or so. Currently, the CMP is busy prepping the guns for sale. Each of the M1s will have to be cleaned, inspected, potentially repaired or rebuilt, and then test fired. Afterward, the M1 Garands will be sorted and graded, which ultimately determines each rifle’s sale price.

The NRA says the M1s are already being fixed up, and the first shipment of 1911s — which will be sold at a rate of 8-to-10,000 a year — have been delivered to the CMP, as well.

“We’re excited to have the guns,” CMP Chief Operating Officer Mark Johnson told the NRA. “We’ve been working on getting them for several years, and it’s the first shipment of guns we’ve received in quite some time.”

The M1 Garands ― about 86,000 from the Philippines and 13,000 from Turkey ― were loaned to those countries following WWII under the Military Assistance Program (MAP).

According to the NRA, because the rifles technically belong [FULL MAG]

Could I still field strip this with eyes closed?
Sure, the same way I could .. you know.  Do anything else with my gun today.

My Merit Badge

                                                           FOOD

The Air Fryer

Yes, I bought an Air Fryer after Hucker (restaurant owning son) got one for Christmas and regaled us with pics and testimonials.  So, what's the first thing I did?  That's right, I took the chicken from a TV Dinner and cooked it ala carte.  I know, a famous gourmand (shucks) does not mess with frozen dinners, but there is a back story here.

The original T.V. dinner was introduced in 1953 and sold for a whopping, even prohibitive (in our houses) 98 cents.  Cutting to the chase, I saved my money and bought one prior to a weekend  Boy Scout camp-out at Chicago's Camp Fort Dearborn (which was located near O'Hare field, and I have more stories about that).

I wanted the cooking merit badge, and figured this was the best way to get'er done.  I cooked it by covering the tin foil package with hot coals, and prior to calling the Scout master over to verify my cookery, placed the dinner in my mess kit.  It got raves, and I got my merit badge.  This is all true. So, to this day, I have an affinity for what is now called a Hungry Man dinner -- which, by the way, actually does produce a fairly crisp chicken in the microwave. But not crisp enough.

Anyway, after reading the basic instructions for the Air Fryer, I plucked the chicken out of the package and cooked it for 5 minutes, or so, while the rest of the dinner was spinning in the microwave.  The result was impressive, and I have since had this meal twice more.  By the buy, I bought the  Power Air Fryer XL (5.3 QT Deluxe, Black).
It's actually just a mini convection oven, but heats up quickly and is great for reheating pizza.

You're welcome

Orson Welles/ Lamont Cranston

DA SHADOW KNOW
Amazingly, the Shadow fights a philanthropist who wants to give everybody luxurious living for free, and won't let anyone take a step without him. When they try to bust free, he wants to kill them all.
I always thought Welles was an old-school leftist.

To: Eleutheria5
Welles only did one season before heading West, and he was only an actor, as far as the production went. He was the first Lamont Cranston, which was the personification of "The Shadow". Previously, since its debut in 1930, "The Shadow" was the narrator of the crime story that stood in the shadows.

Looking up "Valley Of The Living Dead", it was from 1/10/39, starring Bill Johnstone as Lamont Cranston. With Agnes Moorehead, probably her second season.

I power-listened, accelerated, to a chronological sort of my collection some years back, and what stood out was how the bad guys ended up. First by getting shot by the police, then by Old Sparky (death penalty), then by accident when fleeing...there's a progression on what happens to the "bitter fruit".

Lotta Memories Here Boss

Silky-voiced Jimmy Beaumont, frontman for Skyliners, dies at 76

Jimmy Beaumont, the golden-voiced singer of the Skyliners, died Saturday in his sleep at his home in McKeesport at age 76 after a career that lasted nearly 60 years.

Mr. Beaumont, a humble and soft-spoken star, was still singing as recently as Sept. 17 when the Skyliners performed a concert in New York.

1956 Tech

            Techno Thrills

Live modern for less...with gas! This commercial was aired during The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet back in 1956.

I'm watching this 1956 commercial and am wowed by the ease of cleaning the oven door.  Like, just remove it and take it to the car wash (or other.)  But, it was where  infrared cooking is touted that my  radar really locked.

In this 2016 post I  discussed my Father's Day gift of a  CHAR BROIL Infrared Grill .  So new was this concept, to me, that I had to lookup how it worked.  Like, it is (as far as I'm concerned), impossible to cook a dry piece of meat. I want this for my  kitchen.  Really.  I told Mo Sup that I could retro fit it into the oven hole, but was scoffed onto submission. Any way, what took so long?

"Please deposit 5¢"

Res Ipsa LoquiturGee Dad, it's a Wurlitzer!

I didn't feel like washing my car in the driveway yesterday, so for the first time in maybe 10 years I took it to the car wash.   Not only was it fun to watch other people crawling around inside my car when it's 80° out,  but look what I found up in the corner. A pay phone!  When is the last time you saw a pay phone in a public space?  I haven't seen one  anywhere in years.  There will of course come a time when all of us will curse the fact that they've, along with prophylactic machines in gas stations, disappeared.

Be My Valentine

93-Year Old Man Wins a Storytelling Contest With a Hilarious Story About His Valentines in 1933

Amongst the bunch of valentines I received in the second grade was one from my secret crush, Pat Szatkowski.  On the back of the envelope she inscribed "SWAK."  I asked my mom what that meant and she said "Sealed With a Kiss." I was mortified, and ecstatic all at once.  I was in love with Patricia all the way through the 4th grade when she dumped me for a 5th grader. Bitch.

WO TED

                     I GET MAIL

Rodge.  I saw and sent this (top picture) to my neighbor, warrant officer Ted who was a badass 'nam Vet.

I put his name in the subject line and thought he'd get a kick out of it.
Minutes later he emails me back with the real picture of him below.
The pose is almost identical.
What a kick!
