Poor Man's Soo Vede

            Techno Thrills
Poor Man's Soo Vede

Total Time: 10 hours

Active Time: 30 mins -- mostly calibrating

Makes: 2-6 servings

I’ve pondered buying expensive sous vide equipment, but found I can get the job done quite well with appliances I already have that would cost under $100 —a good quality digital thermometer (ideally one with a probe on a wire) and an electric wok or skillet with an old fashioned analog temperature control.

The analog control is essential. A digital control with low-medium-high like is found in crock pots is not going to do it. The old fashioned dial control on your mom’s electric skillet —the one with that curious metal spike coming out of it — is the kind you need.

The magic of this technique is once you’ve brought your food to cooking temperature (say 145-50) using a precise digital thermometer, you should be able to get your cheap, simple analog control to maintain it at that temperature with accuracy that is plenty good enough for excellent results. (PoorMan's Soo Vede cont.)

I've been wanting to try soo vede for awhile, but about the cheapest you can get into it is $100 for what is prolly crap.  Then I found Poor Man's Soo Vede and gave it a try.  We've had that Rival skillet for years and hardly ever used it. The pic is pretty much explanatory, but bottom line is that the result was quite satisfactory.  I let it cook soo vede for about 12 hours and had just one complaint.  I like my soup a little hotter than 140°, but 2 minutes in the microwave fixed that right up.

You're welcome.

Western States Begin .....

[....]
Utah House Speaker Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, was flanked by a dozen participants, including her counterparts from Idaho and Montana, during a press conference after the daylong closed-door summit. U.S. Sen. Mike Lee addressed the group over lunch, Ivory said. New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington also were represented.

The summit was in the works before this month’s tense standoff between Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and the Bureau of Land Management over cattle grazing, Lockhart said.

"What’s happened in Nevada is really just a symptom of a much larger problem," Lockhart said.

Fielder, who described herself as "just a person who lives in the woods," said federal land management is hamstrung by bad policies, politicized science and severe federal budget cuts.

"Those of us who live in the rural areas know how to take care of lands," Fielder said, who lives in the northwestern Montana town of Thompson Falls.  [... FULL]

Here's the bones for my new novel.  That, above,  might be chapter one.  The rest, purely fiction of course.
1

We were the greatest nation ever.
2 You know where we are today. Obama has administered the coup de grĂ¢ce to our body, already gravely wounded by post Nixon government.
3 Two choices.

a. Remain wholeall 57 statesand continue on this course.  Or

b. Expel from the union all states in the utter thrall of Liberalism, thus creating two nations; each free to trade with one another, but governed separately.
4 We are still the greatest people.  A new United States, strictly obedient to the original United States Constitution and Ten Bill of Rights will be reconstituted.
5 In due time the outcast Pox Amerika,  continuing their course of tyrannical government, and corrupting social experimentation, must suffer fatal moral and fiscal bankruptcy.  One by one, then, each will revolt.  One by one, each will apply for readmission to the Untied States. One by one each  will be evaluated.
6 In less than 100 years we will be whole, and free again.  And kick-ass.

Aside.  The Communist Party's (CPUSA) utter infiltration of labor unions in Oregon and Washington, during the 1930s, have a lasting legacy that makes both less than good partners in any restoration.  There is, however, a good chance that,  faced with  the prospect of honest government, they would bolt to California.

The Best of Us

Above & Beyond
Res Ipsa Loquitor

Dog tags of the more than 58,000 service men and women who died in the Vietnam War hang from the ceiling of the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago on Veterans Day, November 11, 2010. The 10-by-40-foot sculpture, entitled Above & Beyond, was designed by Ned Broderick and Richard Steinbock. The tens of thousands of metal dog tags are suspended 24 feet in the air, 1 inch apart, from fine lines that allow them to move and chime with shifting air currents. Museum employees using a kiosk and laser pointer help visitors locate the exact dog tag with the imprinted name of their lost friend or relative. [More]

These 25 United States

Res Ipsa Loquitor

Ron White told about flying on an 8-seat commuter plane when the pilot announced (by yelling over his shoulder) that he was losing engine oil pressure, and would have to turn back.  Ron'd been drinking since lunchtime, so when everyone was freaking, he was like  "Take it down! I don't care!" The guy next to him was losing his mind, which caused White to surmise that "he must have had something to live for."  It's in that spirit that I continue.

I was much taken with Bill Whittles post election monologue "A New Beginning," the first 28 minutes anyway.  He makes several points;  one  is that he's "not talking about revolution, but the direct opposite of that."  Another is that we must not overtly challenge the government, but run  parallel structures to it.  And, he  urges that we  make sure not to do anything that will give government the excuse to throw us in jail.

It was a brilliant ad libbed presentation,  made while the last Wisconsin ballots were still in transit from Illinois.  It provided for me a sense of calm  when I had been, frankly, coming apart at the seams.  Still, I end up asking myself, to what end?  In describing, rather brilliantly,  the mindset of the people who now run things, it's clear that there is no changing those minds.  These are morally corrupt, "live for the moment"  people who have never known deprivation, and who have ceded control of their lives to government institutions.  We are now then a nation of 25 states, but with  a cancer gnawing our borders.

There are other sage commentaries about what  happened, or rather, describing it beforehand.   We are familiar with them, and are among the  primary source documents of this nation's founding,  e.g., these from T.J.
“A little rebellion now and then is a good thing.”

“God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. … And what country can preserve its liberties, if it’s rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure”

We have a choice then.  Docile compliance with dictates from a government entirely at odds with the constitution it had sworn to uphold; or refusal.  It seems to me that the latter course first requires, as it did with the founders, a realization and acceptance that living under the heels of this current and lawless regime is intolerable.  And like them,  be willing to risk all,  pledging life and property to it's cause.
We have heard it from all the usual suspects – Sheila Jackson Lee, JuliĂ¡n Castro, and other Texas Democrats – but now even Jeb Bush is predicting that the Lone Star state will be blue by 2016.-text message

First step—we who are caught living behind enemy lines, so to speak, must relocate to the United States.  It will not be easy leaving, in some cases, family behind, but it's imperative. Only by swelling the remaining free states with like minded people (and votes) can we establish state governments willing to formally expel Blue states, cutting all ties and obligations with, and to Obamerica. And it must be done NOW.

I'm a cup half full guy, so while some may look at the map of the new United states and say, "we're surrounded by Obamunists,"  I say, "We have cut their lines of communication!"

Three and a Half Days ...

Two and a Half Things

Sigh

And this from Bill Whittle
The Occupy Wall Street protesters are complaining about everything from corporations to having to repay student loans. Is America the victim of its own success? Have we created a generation of self-entitled cry babies? Is it time to make these people spend three and half days in the woods so that they can appreciate what capitalism has given them? Find out.

Your unobtainium has shipped

Your unobtainium has shipped?

My ideal solution for real Americans, sickened by the state of government, is not centered around secession (although in extremis  that may be the only recourse),  but rather the expulsion of several states that sustain this tyranny.  Why should the husband leave home because his wife cheats on him?   Truth be known, I've always felt it would require a major dose of  unobtainium to work.  But wait!

This is brilliant!  If the District of Columbia secedes, it is then, under terms of the Lincoln Doctrine, attackable. We can blow the damned place off the map,  and school children will donate pennies to build statues of us for doing it.  And when I say blow the damned place off the map, I mean while congress is in session. Sanders Pulls Amendment to Halt Coburn’s Delay Tactic
December 16, 2009, 3:09 P.M.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Wednesday afternoon withdrew his proposal to create a single-payer insurance system after Republicans compelled Senate clerks to spend hours reading his 767-page amendment to the health care bill as a way to slow down work on the legislation. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) forced clerks to begin reading the amendment in the Republicans’ first attempt at stalling the health care bill.

HOW WE'LL WIN

YOU WISH!
No, let it be the end of gummint controls and we'll start over

I refuse to believe that a George Soros, and a handful crooked congressman can bring down the United States of America.  Before it comes down to something really ugly, let me make a suggestion.

By promising to send Americans a Christmas stimulus check, Speaker Pelosi has, by extension,  recognized the negative effect taxes have on an economy.  Instead of more short-term, phony baloney feel good action, why not go to our strength?  I'm asking for an immediate suspension of all business and capital gains tax.  We must encourage entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in the current climate - which is what entrepreneurs do -  and create new businesses,  and new jobs, free from government encumbrance.

Pause for someone to argue that we need business tax, where there are no viable businesses, and capital gains taxes, where there are none, in order to fund the bailout.

Okay. Lets be proactive Americans, then.  Because that's what Americans are -  to our core.  Can Do ! Drill! Drill! Drill!

Unless we affirm the American promise of economic freedom, we cease to be that nation.  In which case, I will support the formation of a new nation of states that will not include areas currently colored blue. We'll start from scratch, and we'll win again.  And it will be fun.

My Gift To You

A Better Way to Spend $700 Billion!

USA UAS USA

Jodi-O & Don M sent me this - A Better Way to Spend $85 Billion!, by a chap named T. J. Birkenmeier. It's a very creative alternative to bailing out AIG to the tune of $85B., but we're way beyond that now, so I've recalculated.
I'm against the $700,000,000,000.00 bailout

Instead, I'm in favor of giving $700,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bona fide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child.

So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+  into $700 billion that equals $3,500.00

My plan is to give $3,500.00 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $1050.00  in taxes.

That sends $210,000,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $2,450,00 in their pocket.
A husband and wife has $4,900.00

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+  including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $700 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!

Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."

But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom?

WAIT ONE MINUTE!  $2,450?
Screw That.  Won't even buy me a Segway.

Obama for President

... a life free of federal income tax?
Hmmmmm

That's what Obama is promising geezers if he's elected president.  Okay, I'm listening, but you'll have to do better before I'll stab my own country in the back by voting for you.  Here's what I want in addition.

  1. Unlimited, fully paid  health care, and dental.  I pick the doctors.
  2. My kids pay a flat tax of 17%, everything included.
  3. We get one of those Segways.
  4. No inheritance tax.
  5. No cap gains tax.
  6. Increase military spending by 20%.  "Pay for it" by closing Health and Human Services.
  7. Interest free gummint loans.
  8. A casino license.
If that's good for you, then you're good for me.  But, you have to promise - in writing - to commit suicide if you renege on any of these  promises.  Okay? Deal!

Mig v, F-86

This is a condensed (19 minutes) version of last night's "SHOWDOWN" on the Military Channel.  It features Capt. James Jabara's dog fight with Mig15's that made him the word's first jet v. jet fighter ace. Not the best dogfight, but still a very interesting look into that world.

Among these videos of the MIG 15 is one of our own Tim flying one.  He sent me the link a long time ago, but I lost it.

Laura Ingraham

We do have a responsibility here ...

Governments extort. The Colonies knew that.
For we who love the United States, and what it stands for, today is for celebrating our founding, and perhaps reflecting on what this nation is all about.

I was going to find a tortured parallel with that joke about Johnny and the pickle factory with the bony pickles, but Lawrence Henry  blows that away with What America Is All About
I find that close decision [Supreme Court's recent 5-4 ruling affirming that the Second Amendment to the Constitution ] frightening. How can there be any doubt? How can there be any argument?

Let's review:

Our Founders said, explicitly, that when a people found their rulers had usurped the rightful reach of their powers, it was the people's right to "alter or abolish" that government. And no mistake, our Founders, being realists, knew that "alter or abolish" might mean "change the government by violent means, if necessary."

Even in modern times, a lightly armed and aroused populace can cause a government a whole s**tload of trouble -- something of which tyrants are well aware.

Government began with extortion. Some landed character with muscled henchmen in hire threw a barrier across a road, and demanded tribute from all who would pass. Keep that concept in mind, because it underlies all that follows.   . and here's what follows.
Just a half-dozen paragraphs remain ... so you'll have lots of time to watch this video from  American Joe that you meant to watch earlier, but didn't have time for.  It's who we are. I hope those pissants in Washington  understand all this.
