Darkness Flourishes at Vanderbilt University In case you missed the hoopla, I (Carol M Swain) was almost run off the Vanderbilt University campus in 2015 by student protesters and petitions denouncing me for bigotry and hatred. This was related to an opinion piece I wrote for The Tennessean about the Islamic faith and the need for Muslims to fully integrate themselves into our society. As a high profile, black, conservative woman on the Vanderbilt faculty, I was a conspicuous target. At Vanderbilt there apparently is “bad” spirituality (orthodox Christianity) and “good” spirituality (Wicca, Buddhism, and Islam). An example of “good” spirituality (by the University’s definition) is manifested in Vanderbilt’s embrace of Wicca in August 2011, several months after imposing its discriminatory policy toward Christian groups. During my sabbatical last year, I became the target of harassment and a petition demanding that I be suspended until I submitted to mandatory sensitivity training. That’s a rather odd request of a first-generation college graduate and a person who has overcome poverty, attained tenured positions at Princeton University and Vanderbilt, and had her research cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. My Christian faith, not my race and gender, defines me. It shapes the perspective I now share with you about Vanderbilt, where I have taught for the past 16 years. [...] The campus has been shaken by untimely deaths. So far in 2016 we have had one current student (Taylor Force) and two former students (Justin and Stephanie Shults) killed in separate terrorist attacks abroad just weeks apart. Force died March 8 in a terrorist attack during, of all things, a school trip to Israel. Two weeks later, the Shultses were victims of the Brussels airport bombing. That must defy any reasonable actuarial tables for one university, especially one in denial about the threat of radical Islam. But there’s more. In the last three weeks, two undergraduate students have been found dead in their dorm rooms. One death occurred on April 22 (Cheryl Alexandra Morris). Another student (Elliot Meister) was found dead on April 27. We grieve the deaths of these young people and pray for their parents and loved ones. Nevertheless, we wonder if more could have done for Cheryl Alexandra and Elliot. In a recent Tennessean cover story examining his now eight-year tenure as the school’s top administrator, Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos touched on the deaths, saying, “It’s one of those things where the loss is so heavy. For me as a chancellor to lose a child – it’s really the worst thing to happen.” That’s not all that’s happened at Vanderbilt in recent times. Going back just a year or two, we can see where the University has witnessed more than its fair share of tragedy and mishaps, to include the rape case involving Vanderbilt football players. There’s even the quirky: last year, a tree fell and injured several people in a group of prospective students and their parents touring the campus. What are the odds of a tree falling on visiting parents and prospective students on an otherwise calm day? Note: it happened right outside the admissions office. Liars and Other Progressives Last December I was trying to empty my bucket by finally reading Augustine's Confessions.  I landed on "Spark Notes," which  in turn led me to auditing on-line Yale classes  (philosophy, music and the Old and New Testaments).  While having attended parochial schools until mid-high school, my only prior exposure to the Old Testament was a literature class in college. (It's only been since Vatican ll that the Catholic church have fully incorporated the Bible into the mass, etc.  Or, maybe I just wasn't paying attention? ) Anyway,  after a long sojourn, I concluded from the Yale course that despite protestation to the contrary, the professors had an agenda.  A leftist agenda.  Coincidentally, a new parish priest, who holds a PhD in Bible and Theology (and is  a real dynamo), began holding Bible study that was way, way over my ken.  That led me into independent study where I became acquainted with Dr. Scot Hahn.  He has two things going for him.  1.) He (an ex Presbyterian Minister) is a fabulous speaker and 2.) I can hear him (meaning I don't need earphones or CC).  Over last week-end I happened upon Answering the New Atheism, which pretty much would parallel  "Answering the New Left Wing MoFO Progressives." Oh, Jeez.  Then a second thought.  Wait.  AP?  Media  pronouncements on Pope Francis have, either through ignorance or design, been largely misinterpreted/misrepresented, with a bias toward him in agreement with the Left's hope that the meddlesome Catholic Church will finally crack.  Toe the line.  Their line.  Of course no AP writer has ever been to church, so this is all as mysterious as lady's bits. I recognize a very fine line between Christianity and, say, communism/socialism.  The line is crossed when, in the name of Christ, zealots miss entirely the nuance that is personal kindness v. state enforced dictate.  The sixties and seventies brought us Jesuits, and elected Democrats,  like Robert Drinan and, Robert John Cornell.  Radical antiwar Jesuits, the Berrigan Brothers, were a daily disgusting headline.  In 1980, Pope John Paul II unequivocally demanded that all priests withdraw from electoral politics.  I mean, how can Catholic priests be complicit with the murder of unborn children for chrissake?! Where were the Berrigans  on that? They were anything but nuanced. Anyway, my instincts were correct.  Ed Morrissey and Kathryn Jean Lopez explain here that "the longer context of Francis’ remarks this morning to UN leadership provides a much more nuanced picture of Francis’ view of economic policy — although probably not nuanced enough for libertarian ears..." Some Snippets. Pope Francis discussed “equitable development” and a spirit of generosity, and he even mentioned — near the end, almost as an afterthought — that the state should continue to play a role in this. But there’s no “demand” for broader “legitimate redistribution” by government. … In this case, the term “legitimate” is a limiting factor when redistribution is placed in the context of the Gospel story of Zacchaeus. Who was Zaccheaus? He was a tax collector — an agent of the government — who overtaxed and profited from his cheating. In Luke 19, Jesus’ visit to Jericho inspires this sinner and cheater to repent when Jesus extends an invitation to join him. What does Zacchaeus do in response? He proclaims his intent to redistribute his ill-gotten gains back to those whom he defrauded, and to willingly and privately share his wealth with the poor. ”And Zacchae’us stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold.” When Francis said “legitimate redistribution” right near the end, he was clearly condoning some kind of role for governments in assisting the poor. Perhaps he even believes in a more robust role than he lets on here. But he did offer anything on that topic here. To be sure, a demand for a more robust government role would not necessarily be inconsistent with anything he said, but it’s also not what he said. In fact, the use of the word “legitimate” here appears to play the opposite role that the AP’s headline implies — namely, the Pope is implying that not all government redistribution is “legitimate,” and that there might be unspecified limits to what it is just for the state to do. (Which is, in fact, part of the message of the earlier papal documents he cites immediately before that line.) JMJ ”

Catholic leaders however quite often, and quite famously fail to make a distinction between Christian charity and charity at the point of a state held gun. They are often called Jesuits, and always Democrats. Baptists, fundamentalists and evangelicals are less prone to see legalized theft as a good thing. It seems. Which is at the heart of this ad hominem attack on Perry and Bachmann (and Bush) in Mike Lupica's dreary piece.  Some of them, maybe Lupica, are so estranged from the faith of their forefathers that they actually see the whole thing as a freak show. But as a policy, and it is by now accepted DNC doctrine, the openly Christan must be defamed.  It just brings in so much money form  old rich hippies. With Obama occupying the throne, I really am surprised the left have not taken direction from  Robespierre.  France's Catholic church was a devilish thorn in his vision of the perfect state, so he traded  the "Terror" for the "Second Terror."   With it came even more beheadings and  a new calender featuring twelve months with three weeks of 10 days.  The people would have no way of knowing which day was Sunday, and thus forget about God.   Probably would have worked, but Robespierre created a new "church" in which Reason and not God would be the supreme being.
