Hillary and Mounds of Peter Paul stuff

Hillary! Because What Difference Does it Make?

“

Watching Hillary get a Liberty Medal on September 10, the day before the anniversary of the attack on the United States soil and the more recent murder of our ambassador and others in Benghazi, I think it's time to review the record of a woman whose life is marked by deceit and professional failure and ask about the sanity and judgment of her ardent supporters. Read more:

Clarice Feldman (American Thinker article) does a yeoman like job of covering Hillary's criminal past, the provable parts, but how much can a person cover when working under prevailing  "one-million words" restrictions?   She doesn't for instance mention the Peter Paul case.  (Clinton donor wanted by FBI in scheme to funnel money) Called then (and prolly still is) "the biggest campaign fund raising fraud of all time," the entire conversation, where Hillary participated  in the fraud as it was conceived and planned,  was taped by Peter Paul.  Taped!  Hillary's National Finance Director David Rosen was indicted  but Hillary skated.

In a ruling handed down today on whether Hillary Clinton should be given first amendment protection for civil frauds she committed to fund her US Senate campaign, a three judge California appellate panel, including two appointees by Gov Gray Davis who had worked in the same law firm together representing the ACLU, ruled that it would not allow newly released video evidence capturing Hillary in election law violations because ... Hillary’s “Crime On Tape” Protected By CA Appellate Court

Who knows about this?  Political junkies who read  news accounts of financial fraud.  That's pretty much it.  If you're a Lo-Fo television news viewer, nada!  Well, except for Fox News, which nailed it (Hillary Clinton Accuser Claims New Evidence of Fraud in Documentary).

Just this week, this:  Exec pleads guilty in alleged 2008 scheme to help Hillary Clinton.   Her participation in the Benghazi massacre  cover-up is past conjecture, but if she was able to skip on the Peter Paul deal,  with all that DNA on her dress, nothing can stop her, because what difference does it make?

Getting a Concealed Handgun License in Texas WTF?

Res Ipsa Loquitor

I like Texas. Nice people, good state. But one thing that continues to puzzle me is why Texas handgun carry laws are so, well, pathetic. Here is a summary of the requirements for getting a concealed handgun permit: (IANAL so don't take this as legal advice):

Fee: $140 for 5 yrs. Training: In person, at least 4-6 hours, with shooting exam, by TX certified instructor. Fingerprints: required. Photo: required. Open carry: prohibited.

Let's contrast that with some "liberal" states:

  • Pennsylvania: Fee: $19 Training: Not required. Fingerprints: None required. Photo: Passport photo required in some places. Open carry: legal, except you'll be harassed in Philly.
  • Vermont: No permit required to carry openly or concealed.
  • Wisconsin: Fee: $40 Training: Required, but can be obtained for free. Fingerprints: None required. Photo: Not required. Open carry: legal.
  • So what's with Texas? Its laws for carry of firearms are becoming more comparable with those of Illinois. And it's not an idle question for those of us in VA, since the nonresident permit issued by VA is being used as an alternative to the TX resident permit.  [Free Republic Post]

I know that Texas has some swollen lymph nodes that might be cancer (like Austin and San Antonio),  but still, this is way counter-intuitive for me.   I mean, WTFF?  Here's the  link to the Texas CHL site.   Sheesh.

Second Amendment Win

Tails of the Gun

Why Second Amendment Supporters are Winning

“
Res Ipsa Loquitor

In The Atlantic, Molly Ball writes a thoughtful article about the recall elections in Colorado, and the effects of those elections on citizen disarmament efforts.  Titled  "The Death of Gun Control" it is a somber article with the clear assumption that those who push citizen disarmament are on the morally correct side:

“  I only wish that this one election was really 'the death' of the gun control industry. This failed and discredited, ex-hippy dogma needs to die. It has no rational basis, and it's legacy is one of needless death and suffering by innocents prevented from defending their own lives, and those of others.

The gun control industry itself is funded and directed by a few elite billionaires like Bloomberg and Soros. It's staff is a bunch of highly paid lobbyists, lawyers and 'advocates' clustered around D.C. and various state capitals. ...  Spencer60
[...]
Spencer60's comments destroy Molly Ball's assumptions about citizen disarmament.  Anyone who seriously looks at the data comes away with the same conclusion: citizen disarmament has no rational basis if you accept its stated purposes.   A rational basis for it can only be found if you accept unfounded, unstated assumptions about reality that have not stood the test of real world implementation. Here are some of those assumptions:
  • The state is a beneficent entity that will never turn against its own citizens.
  • Guns in the hands of ordinary people result in higher crime rates, particularly homicide rates.
  • The only benefits that guns offer society can easily be achieved with high levels of regulation and control by the state, and significantly lower levels of gun ownership.
  • Defense of self and home by armed citizens is such a rare and unusual event that it is overwhelmed by the increased crime resulting from more gun ownership.
  • And, of course, the ultimate result of such assumptions:
  • Any regulation or law that reduces the number of guns outside the control of the state, or which makes it more burdensome for citizens to acquire, own or use guns (which amounts to the same thing) is a public good.

Bobby Ross Era

Res Ipsa Loquitur

This post will generate  limited interest, even more less than normal, but it made my morning,  I found this 30 minute film, made after Bobby Ross's first year as Maryland's football coach in 1986.  Ross, in my opinion, was the best coach Maryland ever had (save maybe for Jim Tatum and Curly Byrd).  Sadly, he left after just four years, a casualty of the Len Bias death fiasco that saw the despicable Chancellor  John Slaughter declare a jihad against the entire sports program.  After Lefty Driesell and AD Dick Dull were fired, Ross read the tea leaves and left for Georgia Tech (where he promptly won a share of the national championship by finishing first in the final Coaches' Poll).  His resignation was the final straw for me.  I dropped my Gold Terrapin Club membership.

Anyway, I seem to be wallowing (a bit too much) in nostalgia lately, but this really made me feel good.  Oh yeah, Ronald Reagan was president, America was on the ascent after years of abuse from Liberal government, and life was good.  If you're a Tar Heel fan, there's some memorable shots of Kenan Memorial Stadium.   You can watch the video here.

A technique commonly used by hackers, a MITM attack involves using a fake security certificate to pose as a legitimate Web service, bypass browser security settings, and then intercept data that an unsuspecting person is sending to that service. Hackers could, for example, pose as a banking Web site and steal passwords.

The technique is particularly sly because the hackers then use the password to log in to
Res Ipsa Loquitorthe real banking site and then serve as a "man in the middle," receiving requests from the banking customer, passing them on to the bank site, and then returning requested info to the customer -- all the while collecting data for themselves, with neither the customer nor the bank realizing what's happening. Such attacks can be used against e-mail providers too.

Earlier this week, Techdirt picked up on a passing mention in a Brazilian news story and a Slate article to point out that the US National Security Agency had apparently(using  MITM)  impersonated Google on at least one occasion to gather data on people.

I suspect we are now sailing in seas so studded with mines that scarcely a day can go by without reports of new sinkings. So to speak. The solution?  Short of killing everyone?  I can't think of one.

A democrat, an Independent, and a Republican walk into a bar ...
Res Ipsa Loquitor

One of us is a Democrat; one, an independent; another, a Republican. Yet, together, we recognize several hard truths: Government spending levels are unsustainable. Higher taxes, however advisable or not, fail to come close to solving the problem. Discretionary spending must be reduced but without harming the safety net for our most vulnerable, or sacrificing future growth (e.g., research and education). Defense and homeland security spending should not be immune to reductions. Most consequentially, the growth in spending on entitlement programs—Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare—must be curbed.

These truths are not born of some zeal for austerity or unkindness, but of arithmetic. The growing debt burden threatens to crush the next generation of Americans.
[Generational Theft Needs to Be Arrested]

They could have—should have—stopped at "Government spending levels are unsustainable," because everything after that is more of what we've been hearing for 50 years+.
  • . Discretionary spending must be reduced but without harming the safety net for our most vulnerable, or sacrificing future growth (e.g., research and education).
Without harming the safety net .. is the phrase that sinks all ships. And future growth depends on government funding  education?  Forgive us millions while we laugh bitterly.
  • Defense and homeland security spending should not be immune to reductions.
Dept of Homeland Security as constituted is a bigger threat to the nation than Islamo fascists.  What they mean is, "We spend too much on defense."
  • Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare—must be curbed.
Curbed?  Have they heard of Obamacare?

I'm laughed out.

This makes sense now.
Today's Fun Blast from the Past

West Maryland!

Conservative group wants liberation for western Maryland
Fed up with taxes and Democratic dominance, they want to create 51 state

Res Ipsa Loquitor

“
I spoke Monday to the leader of what's called the Western Maryland Initiative. Scott Strzelczyk is his name. He doesn't like the word "secession." He's talking about something different — the formation of a new state out of five counties. The U.S. Constitution allows regions to separate with approval from the state legislature and Congress. There are similar efforts around the country. West Virginia is the last state to successfully break away from another, and that was 150 years ago.

Democrats rigged the 6th Cong. district with a big chunk of liberal Montgomery County to guarantee the election last fall of John Delaney, depriving Western Maryland voters of an 11th term of representation by the 86-year-old Roscoe Bartlett of Buckey
That's what Strzelczyk has in mind.

He no longer wants to be part of the Maryland associated with Prince Georges County, Baltimore City and Montgomery County. Being a Republican, he's miserable. The Democrats control the Maryland General Assembly, hold all statewide offices and, he says, gerrymandered legislative and Congressional districts. The state has only one Republican member of Congress, Andy Harris.

"The entire state is controlled basically by three jurisdictions," Strzelczyk said. "That's not representative government. ... We don't think this government can be fixed."

The solution? Form your own state. [Full tingle]

Be still my heart.  Do I think seceding has a chance of succeeding?  No.  Not unless conditions that allowed West Virginia  to leave Virginia (rebellion) occur.  But just seeing it in print makes my gentleman's area tingle.  And speaking of this preposterously oppressive State, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has got on the nerves of Md. Gov. Martin "The White Obama" O'Malley with this radio ad, that urges MD businesses to move to Texas.

I love it so.

If you think the Obama health law is only for the uninsured and you won’t be affected, you’re in for a surprise next time you go to the doctor. Be prepared for questions unrelated to why you are seeking medical help — questions that you don’t want to answer.

Whether you’re at the dermatologist or the cardiologist, you’ll likely be asked: “Are you sexually active? If so, do you have one partner, multiple partners or same-sex partners?”

Doctors are being turned into government agents, where they’re pressured financially to ask questions they consider inappropriate and unnecessary and violate their Hippocratic Oath to keep patients’ records confidential.

Going to the doctor can be embarrassing. But for your own good, you confide in your doctor, as you wouldn’t anyone else. What is happening here is different.

Blue Heron Blues

“
Lokalie Dokalie

Res Ipsa Loquitor

On July 12, a rainy Friday afternoon,a great blue heron who has visited our docks throughout the year became caught on the main pier. Her right leg was caught between two planks, and in attempting to free herself and fly away she broke her leg badly. After a number of attempts she freed herself and tumbled into the water, but was unable to fly because she couldn't push herself up and out of the water. As the tide began to drift her out I ran up to the pool and used a long-handled dip net to herd her around to the steps leading out of the water and onto the point. She then hopped inside the pool enclosure where Bob, Claude and I were able to confine her using pool chairs. In the meantime, Laura went home and began trying to contact wildlife rescue organizations, but none she talked to could take the bird. I was able to get in touch with a woman who has been involved in bird rescue for over thirty years. Bob, Claude an I were able to capture the bird, bundle her in a sheet, and drive her over to Terry's house in my car. We thought surely she would have to be euthanized that evening because her leg was so badly broken.

Terry called me later that night and said she had set Big Blue's leg and would keep her at her house until she felt it was ready for release back into nature. After a month Terry felt she was ready. We were ready to release it on a Thursday morning, but on Wednesday evening Terry called to tell me she had broken her leg again in the same place. She set the leg again and kept it for another month. Last Tuesday (September 3) Terry brought Big Blue over and we released her back into nature near the marsh. She has a waterproof cast on her right leg that we hope will give enough stability for her leg to mend totally. That said, Terry doesn't believe the leg will ever be back to 100%, but at least it is functional. She has been in our area since, spending time between the marsh area and our pier. I fed her some catfish one afternoon, and although she wolfed it down, I haven't been able to get close enough to feed her again. This morning she was down on our main pier and Sherrill tossed her a catfish from about 10 feet away. She promptly snatched it up and swallowed it. Today marks eight days since we've released her and she appears to be doing well. I looked at her eyes through binoculars this morning and they appear clear and sparkling, so I think she's in pretty good health. I've seen her fly a couple of times, which is a good sign because she didn't make any real flights in the two months Terry cared for her. And I've seen her wading in the shallows, so hopefully he's fishing for herself.

The Litella Administration

The Litella Administration
A new error in U.S. foreign policy.
“
Didn't watch L'affaire «ligne rouge» speech, because I cannot stand watching Obama.  He's the only person I've ever seen who can prance about while standing still.  Did I say I can't stand to listen to his voice?  It's true.  Anyway, everybody knew the speech was delivered to give media talking points that  morning shows can use to keep the Lo-Fos from knowing what a goofass they have for president.  This Tranato column (excerpt) from yesterday tickled me, and says it all.

In a New York Post column, Rich Lowry puts it a million times more pointedly: "Now that John Kerry is the secretary of state, his gaffes can launch major diplomatic initiatives."
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi echoed the claim in a tweet: "Thanks to Pres. Obama's strength, we have a Russian proposal. We hope that it is credible and real, and therefore progress."

If Pelosi had any wit, she'd have tweeted that we have to bomb Syria so we can find out what's in it.

In a mordant way, it is fitting that this crisis seemingly ended with an administration gaffe, for that is also the way it began. Obama wasn't doing anything more than thinking out loud last year when he set a "red line" against the use of chemical weapons, but he trapped himself into making it U.S. policy, then demanded Congress and the world back it up. It's as if Emily Litella--the hard-of-hearing old lady the late Gilda Radner played on "Saturday Night Live"--were in charge of U.S. foreign policy. Only President Litella, on having her error pointed out to her, would have the good sense to say: "Never mind."

Come to think of it, the Litella analogy even explains that bizarre "Cheerios" comment we highlighted yesterday. What's all this fuss I keep hearing about military action against cereal? (James Taranto)
