Skyberian Obamacare

                                                                            Stalin's  Mustache

A Dose of Russian Doctors; A Taste of Obamacare Culture

Now, if you know me, you'll know that I hate going to the doctor. Unfortunately, in order to teach in Russia, you have to get a medical book and have a million doctors sign off and say that you're healthy enough to work with children. I can't really complain about that - it makes (sense). But the entire process is horrible and leaves a lot of room for improvement.

To start off, you need to get an official medical booklet. To get this, you bring some passport photos, your passport, and 300 rubles to some old women in a random building in a random courtyard. I did this first thing on Monday and was sent away because I didn't have a translation of my passport. So today, I had my registration and that seemed to work, because I was then sent to a very nice woman who gave me my booklet.

Then came the hard part. Thankfully, one of the girls that works at the school, Lena, came and endured everything with me. I am beyond grateful for her help. I may have to bake her cookies. Anyway, after taking some money out (which was an ordeal itself because four different ATMs didn't work), we went to the medical center. The receptionist gave me a bunch of papers, one of which had a list of all fifteen things I had to have signed off. And to add an extra little twist, the offices all closed for the day in only an hour and fifteen minutes. Oh, Russia.

The first room I went to - the general physician I think - was misleading. The doctor was nice and spoke a bit of English. There was a pleasant old man hanging out who spoke excellent English and we had a little conversation. Then after some confusion about a really long line, I was whisked off to the first real doctor, where I had to suffer through an extremely unpleasant and rude woman asking me questions I didn't understand and then yelling at me for not bringing my translator. Thankfully, though, my friend rescued me and the whole thing was over in a matter of minutes.

I went back to the confusing line again, which turned out to be the lab. I went in and the woman in the room very cheerfully took out the mini razorblade she needed to cut my finger open. I'm hardly exaggerating. It was a thin piece of metal that was around an eighth of an inch wide. The woman distracted me and then made fun of me for jumping when she stabbed my finger. I promise I'm not just being a baby. I've had my finger pricked for little blood tests before and that's not bad at all. This was a stabbing. After which, she squeezed my finger and continued to collect blood in mini vials for about five minutes. Sadly, that was the most pleasant experience of my day.

After a quick checkup at the dentist, I was done at the medical center until next week. So I headed over to the hospital to get my x-ray. But the x-ray machines are all broken at the hospital, so I have to do that next week too. But once I've got that and all my lab results are back, I get to go to the therapist, who is the one that signs off on the whole booklet.

Somehow all of that was done by two, so I was able to head home early for the day. I went home, showered, and curled up in my newly beautiful bed to do some reading and TV watching. But mostly I'm telling you that because I went to Ikea yesterday and bought new stuff for my apartment and I wanted a reason to post this photo of my new bedroom.

The Clinton Machine Is Alive

... Blue State Digital's “Vote Different” was the first political mash-up of the first presidential campaign following the inception of  (Google's ownership of ) YouTube. More than any officially sanctioned ad, it encapsulated the rebellious passions of the young, progressive tech-savvy opposition to the all-but-certain nominee[Hillary].

According to the Gallup poll at the time of the video’s release, Hillary Clinton had a healthy double-digit lead over Barack Obama (Al Gore was third with 18 percent support). Over the next year, Blue State Digital would raise more than a half-billion dollars for the insurgent Obama campaign and build a support community of more than 13 million volunteers nationwide as he seized the nomination the Clintons had assumed was theirs for the asking. This was the landmark moment for that section of the American left that had dubbed itself “the progressives.”

Six years later, the picture for progressivism is very different. Once again, the nomination is Hillary Clinton’s for the asking—but this time, it seems as if the only resistance progressives will offer is mild indeed.

In 2008, the progressive movement delivered a shocking upset to the established Democratic order, rejecting Clintonian Third Way politics and the Democratic Leadership Council to go with Hope and Change. Today, the same movement has largely thrown in the towel, surrendering their ideological principles in favor of winning at all costs. Even the name of Hillary’s Super PAC, “Ready for Hillary,” suggests the tired acquiescence of those who once doubted her superiority as a leader. While more descriptive, it would’ve been a pain to write “How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Hillary Clinton” on all those donation checks. Progressives are ready to be part of the Clinton team.
[...]
But this is about more than just disappointment in Barack Obama’s failure ... It is about the path to electoral victory and the shifting nature of a Democratic Party that’s moving toward a new reality where Obama’s aspirational progressivism takes a back seat to Clintonian priorities.
 [...]
Whatever the case, it is telling that this is a rare issue—one where the personal views of the president of the United States are largely irrelevant—on which Hillary must grovel for forgiveness for her past sins. [...]

In practice, the party now resembles a protection racket with an army of volunteers, with friends who never suffer and enemies who never relax. And who are those enemies? Not big business or Wall Street, which has paid their way to new alliances; not America’s insurers, whose products Democrats have made it illegal not to buy; not privacy-challenging government, which Obama has expanded to unprecedented degrees. No, the only enemies who really matter to today’s Democratic Party are those wayward intolerant social-policy traditionalists with their un-American views of religious liberty.   [The Clinton Machine Is Alive]

Benjamin Domenech's The Clinton Machine Is Alive is somewhat lengthy, but offers good insight into the state of the Statist Party these days.  A party which  "last great white hope"  is (gak!) Massachusetts's not ready for prime-time Senator Elizabeth Warren.  A party which only true enemy are those wayward intolerant social-policy traditionalists with their un-American views of religious liberty.  In other words, it is the same Democrat Party that came into power with Nixon's ouster; a party where the only thing held sacred is total control gained and held at all cost. You will be made to care

Vanderbilt University has decided student groups on campus cannot determine their own leadership. Consequently, a muslim can run the Christian group, a global warming skeptic can run the Earth First group, a Republican can run the College Democrats, etc. You get the idea.

The rule came in part because, as you will not be surprised to learn, a Christian fraternity “had expelled several students for violating their behavior policy. One student said he was ousted
You will be made to care. You’ll be made to care about gay marriage. You’ll be made to care about killing kids. You’ll be made to care about the influence of a secular culture on your children as they grow. You’ll be made to care about a host of issues.
because he is gay.” Tish Harrison Warren wrote about this at Christianity Today. Her Christian group allowed anyone to be a member, “but it asks key student leaders—the executive council and small group leaders—to affirm its doctrinal statement, which outlines broad Christian orthodoxy and does not mention sexual conduct specifically. But the university saw belief statements themselves as suspect.”

The first bit of Tish Harrison Warren’s column is really the most relevant part for my purposes here.

I thought I was an acceptable kind of evangelical. I’m not a fundamentalist. My friends and I enjoy art, alcohol, and cultural engagement. We avoid spiritual clichés and buzzwords. We value authenticity, study, racial reconciliation, and social and environmental justice.

A lot of Christians have long thought they could sit on the sidelines. Only the icky evangelicals they don’t much care for and the creepily committed Catholics would have to deal with these issues and the people who hate those deeply committed to their faith. They, on the other hand, could sit on the sidelines, roll their eyes, and tell everyone that they didn’t think it was that big a deal. They were, after all, on birth control or watching whatever trendy HBO series is on or having a cocktail or perfectly willing to bake a cake for a gay wedding.
Nonetheless, the secularists at Vanderbilt kicked her Christian group off campus “for being the wrong kind of Christians.”

My friend Matthew Lee Anderson has some thoughts on it. In part he writes, “if we do not grasp the joy of the martyrs, we do not understand them at all.” I tweeted out Matt’s post yesterday, but was reminded of it again today by my friend Nick. He sent me Rod Dreher’s piece on the whole thing.

Folks, this is precisely why I started the saying “You will be made to care.” It all stemmed from a diarist here at RedState who took the position that gay marriage did not affect him, he did not care about it, and he would never care about. But, of course, you will be made to care. It is a larger issue than just gay marriage and many comfortably naive, living at the margins of faith, Christians, think they have a comfortable path through life in the United States.

Put bluntly: if you do have a comfortable path through life with no fears at all of persecution, you probably are not a Christian. Islam may be about submission, but Christianity is about suffering.1 The suffering may not be major. It may be an accumulation of small sleights over time. It may be the loss of a friend or just the expulsion of your Christian group from your private school. But Christianity is a religion of suffering and persecution.

You may think you can sit on the sidelines. You may think you can opt-out of the culture war. You may think you can hide behind your trendy naked Leena Dunham t-shirt while you sip trendy drinks talking about trendy shows and writing columns demanding Christians be forced by the state to bake cakes, provide flowers and farms, and offer up photographs of gay weddings. But not only will you one day be called to account to your God for how you advanced his kingdom, but on this Earth you will be made to care. That does not mean you have license to be bitter or angry or hateful. You should love others and help others. Just do not expect anything in return. [Full Article]

This blog is, and has been for 12 years, about whatever I'm into at the moment.  Politics mostly.  I've eschewed discussing religion except to ponder things like, "who do atheist turn to ... " sort of thing.   Now, I have been made to look deeper into the state or our culture, and the reasons why ... why all of it?   I won't evangelize, but it has become impossible for me to ignore.  Metzger summarized nicely with  "I'm not a practicing Christian, but ... as a strong believer in custom and tradition and ritual as the glue that keeps a culture intact .."  With the loss of those guardrails came this, today. Ten million words will not beging to summraize.  But, you know; you feel. War is declared against the Judeo-Christain ethic. Monsters have been embraced.

Last week the ubiquitous "Anonymous" challenged a Tailgunner Dick comment with,   "But if you want to prove Mr. Dawkins is wrong it's necessary to prove that God does exist (which no-one has managed to do to date).

I responded, but quicky deleted; it was the stuff of a range war.  On reflection though, my answer is that I am proven that God exists.  My suggestion to Anonymous would be to read ( to make it easier) Saint Thomas Aquinas's  Shorter Summa (or the even the more concise pony), and we can take it from there. But it's a sterile challenge,  for the same reason it's impossible to discuss, say, the 984 outrages against our rule of law perpetrated by this Liberal/Obama government:  Obamunists have their own media, their own history, their own wise men, and most importantly, their own statist religion and pope.

By the by, if Anonymous, or anyone else,  would like to know why I know God exists, I will be happy to answer  via e-mail,  for whatever that's worth.  I am of average intellect, and no match for the godless philosophers that  Dawkin's camp will utilize, like, say, Friedrich Nietzsche.

Huh?

... just too damned much of it.

Walkin' along, pulling one's pud ...

The most common criticism I get about what I write and send out is that it's generally pretty good stuff but there's just too damned much of it and it takes too much time to read.  So, today, as has been of late my wont, I disdained TV news and went to CNN and FoxNews sites to read about the happenings.  Here are some major stories and my reactions to them:
  • Britain PM Cameron says ISIS is fucking nuts and Britain should be scared shitless of 'em -- About time!
  • Two more Americans killed fighting with ISIS -- Good!
  • Russian soldiers infiltrating Ukraine --  Yawn!
  • Nidal (Ft. Hood shooter) wants to become citizen of ISIS Caliphate --Fine!
  • Nidal still sucking air -- Why?
  • Marine still prisoner in Mayheeko for no good reason --HFC!
  • PotUS has no strategy for handling potential enemies and threats to America -What's new?
  • Soetoro ANNOUNCES to enemies that he has no strategy for dealing with them --Fucking rookie!
  • Brangelina married -- WGAFF!
  • FBI National Domestic Threat Assessment omits Islamist terror threat -YGBSM!
  • Mitch McConnell is a fucking jerk -- Surprise, surprise, surprise!
  • Romney prepares for 3rd run at presidency -GOP takes aim at foot
  • White House staff in damage-control mode after Obama strategy remark -- And this is news . . . how?
  • More volcanoes spewing ash and smoke into atmosphere in New Guinea -- It's Bush's fault
  • Joan Rivers in hospital in critical condition after surgery snafu --My givadam's busted
There.  Those brief enuf for ya?

Whereas a despotic government no longer operates with the consent of the governed,

Whereas ....

Monday I ran across this letter to the editor in our local rag, The Capitol; which, now that it's been purchased by the Sun Papers, truly deserves that sobriquet.  The author, Mr Clement, hath I think eloquently captured, in form and substance, my own long held view that the citizenry must be allowed to arm themselves equally with such police (and I include the military) that can be used against them by a despotic government.

I don't know Mr. Clement, but I imagine he looks something like this

As a staunch supporter of the right of the people to keep and bear arms, even in this age of WMD, I think I have found a small foothold on the slippery slope of gun control where I might safely and permanently stand.  I offer a proposition.

Whereas the purpose of the military is defense against foreign enemies, and
Whereas the purpose of the police is enforcement of domestic law, and
Whereas a  government is despotic which turns its military against its people, and
Whereas a despotic government no longer operates with the consent of the governed,
Now, therefore, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall be limited only to the extent that these same limitations apply to all police forces having jurisdiction over the citizen.

Simply draw up a list of that subset of weaponry which the police may use,  and you  have a list of authorized weaponry for the common citizen. Some lament that such a proposal leaves the police "outgunned."  Our founders knew otherwise.

"… all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, then to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations...".

A public armed  as herein described poses no threat to the civil society but, rather, is the key check to that unbridled power which inevitably leads to a long train of abuses and usurpations.

Honey Buckets

  Honey; Funny

This morning I watched the flurry of birds in the yard, and noticed a particularly heavy population of honey bees flitting about the flowers we planted to attract humming birds.  That reminded my of the scene (maybe the most poignant and heart rendering  scene in movie history (after the Gayle Sayer's eulogy in Brian's Song); the funeral parlor scene where Vada grieves over Thomas J,  who was stung to death by bees.  And that reminded me of a most startling truth.  In my going on 97 years of traipsing about the woods, I have not once seen a beehive in nature.  I mean, it's not that they're tiny little things. WTF?

Council which removed foster children after parents' Ukip membership was discovered finally apologises seven months on

Social workers took three Eastern European children away in November
  • Rotherham council originally said couple's affiliation with right-wing group meant they opposed 'multiculturalism'
  • It has now back-tracked saying reason for action was badly communicated
  • 'The council can confirm that membership of Ukip would not prevent any individual from being considered as a foster carer'
  • But council insists decision was still in the children's 'best interests'
Gee, what is this Ukip (UK IndependenceParty), and why are they so bad that their children can be taken from them?
  • European Union: UKIP advocates leaving the European Union
  • European Court of Human Rights - UKIP wants to repeal the Human Rights Act, and remove Britain from both the European Convention on Refugees and the European Convention on Human Rights to "enable us to deport foreign criminal and terrorist suspects where desirable" while still "allow[ing] genuine asylum applications in accordance with our international obligations"
  • Monarchy:UKIP fully supports the British monarchy and its constitutional role.
  • Immigration: The party has previously outlined a number of measures designed to reduce immigration into the UK which include a five-year "freeze" on immigration for permanent settlement, the introduction of a points-based work-permit system and initiating a drive to remove illegal immigrants.
  • Same-sex marriage: the party supports civil partnerships but opposes legalisation allowing same-sex marriage because of concerns that a law change could mean that faith groups and places of worship would be forced to perform same-sex marriages.
  • Energy, environment and climate change: UKIP's 2013 energy policy document states that global warming is part of a natural cycle: "the slight warming in the last hundred years is entirely consistent with well-established, long-term natural climate cycles".
  • Defence: UKIP proposed a 40 percent increase in defence spending and the purchase of three new aircraft carriers. (Source)

http://bukaymedia.com Ever wonder why fish-eating herons and egrets are often seen standing in fields? This video provides some clues. This Great Blue Heron caught and killed four gophers in a row without a miss! Two gophers were swallowed and two were left uneaten. The first gopher was quite large and took some effort and lubrication from a water puddle to swallow. Herons have been known to choke to death while trying to swallow large prey, but not this time. A few days earlier, I was fortunate to film a much smaller sized egret catching a large gopher and struggling for about 9 minutes to swallow it! This video is at http://youtu.be/EqpKf_PXgjI. I was amazed that the egret's skinny neck could eventually stretch enough to pass the large gopher!

I was surprised to see the heron continue to hunt and kill more gophers than it ate. I suspect that it enjoyed hunting for fun as well as for food. I filmed the heron for about 90 minutes in the late afternoon. I don't know how many gophers the heron may have caught before I arrived at the scene.

The heron struck the gophers so hard that they appeared to die very quickly after the first blow. Gopher #4 was struck only once; and then it was quickly dropped to the ground. The heron watched it for about 15 minutes, as if to see if it moved, and then walked away without eating the dead gopher. The heron appeared to continue to hunt for more gophers as darkness fell. I got cold and went home.

This heron could easily get a job in backyards plagued with gophers!

I filmed this event on March 17, 2012 at Miller Knox Regional Park in Pt. Richmond, CA, along the San Francisco Bay Trail after several days of heavy rains. The gophers on this fateful day may have been more vulnerable than usual due to partial flooding of their burrows after the recent rains. I used a Panasonic GH2 camera to capture the footage.

If you have issues with gophers damaging your garden or landscape, don't you wish you could rent a Great Blue Heron like this one for a few days?

I recently found this amazing video of a falcon dive-bombing and killing a Great Blue Heron--far more than it could eat! Check it out at http://youtu.be/IaQc40qxjrU. The very end of the video shows the falcon feeding on the heron close-up.

Here is a video I made about a gopher that DID get away:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILA5_c...

Amazing ... we have a decent Blue Heron population here, but I had no idea that, and never saw, that they anything other than fish. Who knew they killed for sport?

Horowitz- Take No Prisoners

"If there was a single book to add to the swag-bag for the attendees at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Take No Prisoners is the book."

J Christian Adams from PJ Media has written a rave review of David Horowitz's latest book, Take No Prisoners: The Battle Plan for Defeating the Left, saying it is a must-read for Republicans if they want to win in 2016.

"Ten pages into David Horowitz’s new book…I realize putting dog-ears on pages with important quotes for this review is hopeless. I’ve placed a dog-ear on every page. By the end, the whole book might be dog-eared," Adams writes.

At the root of this strategic mistake is the belief among many Republicans that the two parties still share the same goals, but have divergent ways to get there. News flash: Democrats like John F. Kennedy and Scoop Jackson no longer exist. The Democrats have been taken over by messianic progressives seeking to craft the world in their own image.
Adams suggests that the book be handed to every attendee at the 2016 Republican National Convention in order to "reverse a string of electoral losses" that have plagued the GOP.

"Take No Prisoners is about how Republicans have dropped the ball on writing the national narrative, and how they can get it back by crafting words and tactics that counter the left’s mastery of the process," he writes.

Adams reminds readers that no longer do Democrats like John F. Kennedy and Scoop Jackson exist and that Republicans ought to stop thinking they share the same goals. "The Democrats have been taken over by messianic progressives seeking to craft the world in their own image," he writes. Adams uses a quote from Horowitz's book to further highlight this point:

Republicans do not hope to change the world. They are too mindful of the human catastrophes that have been brought about by those who do.
