The 1950's - Another Time, Another Place

Another Time, Another Place

My best friend in high school, Wally Ruzek, just sent me this "Lost in the Fifties- Another Time, Another Place" video.  It particularly resonates because Wally was from Long Island, me from Chicago, so we sort of  assimilated together into the preppy Towson HS culture.  Wally looked like Wally Cleaver, and he had the biggest collection of 45's I ever saw.  Having come from New York many of them were songs I, and certainly few in Maryland, had ever heard of.  Like the Dubs. The Five Satin's "In the Still of the Night," remains to this day one of my favorite tunes.

I want to say I don't want to live in the past, but I am very comfortable there, and feel very fortunate to have come of age while Ike was president; a time when accidentally brushing against the softness of a girl's breast would make your head spin. Today, stuff like this is more than I can handle.

Red Fox

Red Fox Sniffing

In the morning we will very often find a red fox standing on our front  lawn, or see him/her  strolling zippety-doo-dah casual down the middle of the street.  A cool thing.

In our early days here, we would often awake in the pre-dawn hour to the blood curdling sound of a rabbit screaming whilst being ripped apart by a fox.  Or so imagination dictated.
Some people, alarmed, called animal control who would then be obligated to dutifully spend a few days trapping them and, we told our children, drive them to the eastern shore where they would be ever so happy. Ahem.

In the aftermath, the rabbit population would explode, and nobody could grow vegetables, or even leafy plants.  Finally, I looked up fox sounds on this new thing called the internet, and was able to report at the next Brie and Chardonnay tasting that  what we were hearing were sounds of hungry fox cubs.  Much buzzing.

Come the foxes, rabbit problem solved.  It's a cycle. We all expect that some New York transplant will soon report our red fox, and it will disappear.  It's a cycle.  I'm cool with it.

Mystery Viet Nam Memorial

Somewhere in Colorado
Once the military.com site opens, it takes a few seconds for the video to automatically start. This is from some dirt bikers along the continental divide near Gunnison, Colorado, where I'm not sure, who stumble upon a Vietnam memorial in the woods. Whoever did it, put a lot of money into it. Spooky, to say the least.

Interesting, I never was aware of it's existence. Who ever caused it to be there is a true patriot. As usual the government is non committal at best over it.....some vets must be aware of it as I saw numerous 7.62x51 and 30.06 rounds on one of the ledges between the stones.
Hope you can open this and view it at full screen quite interesting to say the least as to the location and how  did it get there. My Vietnamese is very rusty, not to say it was very good to start with.

Subject: PLEASE read this and WATCH THE VIDEO! (and Fwd!)

http://pjmedia.com/eddriscoll/2014/04/27/microclimates-of-totalitarianism/2/

Bill Whittle explains:

How Marxism was divorced from economics and married to the culture; How "Critical Theory" came about; The real agenda behind "political correctness"; The origins and exploitation of rage, separatism and victimology;

All this and more in 13 minutes of video!

I implore you to watch the video and to spread it around!

By the way, I found this PJMedia piece and the video through a link from the Comments page of Jack Cashill's article in today's American Thinker:
http://www.americanthinker.com/2014/05/the_suffocating_neopuritanism_of_progressive_america.html

''Alexandra Pelosi’s HBO documentary Fall to Grace tracks the evolution of New Jersey’s disgraced, self-dubbed “gay-American,” former governor, Jim McGreevey. In one passing scene, McGreevey enters a church ostensibly more welcoming than the judgmental Catholic Church of his childhood. The message board on the church front reads -- and this is a close paraphrase -- “Lord help us overcome the sins of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia.”

Had the message board been bigger, the good pastor might have added nativism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia. In a postmodern world that prides itself on “non-judgmentalism,” these have emerged as the seven new deadly sins, and God help the man, woman, or child who commits one.

Unlike the Catholic Church McGreevey abandoned, his newfound Neo-Puritanism is unforgiving. It shows sinners little mercy and offers them no path to absolution. Indeed, like Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne, the sinner is publicly branded with her sin.''

I think yur a trouble maker mister ...

The high court refused to review an appellate-level decision that says the president and U.S. military can arrest and indefinitely detain individuals seen “as a threat to national security anyone viewed as a troublemaker.”

‘WHITE PRIVILEGE’

Check your privilege at the door whitey
“

“There is a phrase that floats around college campuses, Princeton being no exception, that threatens to strike down opinions without regard for their merits, but rather solely on the basis of the person that voiced them. “Check your privilege,” the saying goes, and I have been reprimanded by it several times this year.”

He’s 20, he’s white, and he’s a freshman at Princeton University.

According to the ethnic and feminist studies college students and professors who frequently and vehemently complain that this country is steeped in racism and sexism and is only fair and just and equal for white, heterosexual males – he is the poster child for so-called “White Privilege.”

His name is Tal Fortgang, and just eight months into his Ivy League experience, he’s been told on numerous occasions to “check his privilege” – a phrase that has taken social media social justice campaigning by storm.

It is meant to remind white, heterosexual males that they have it so good because they’re white, heterosexual males. They haven’t faced tough times, they don’t know what it’s like to be judged by the color of their skin.

Oh, but they do. [Full]

Can anyone add anything that's been left unsaid about all this?   I don't think so.  After six years of Obama my mind's done been blown away.  What?  You're a masocist?  Okay.

Thanks, thoR!

Chef and Farmer

Vivian Howard originally made a name for herself in the Manhattan restaurant world and with her own gourmet delivery service. Acclaim and potential investors poured in, but it was the offer from her own parents that called to her the loudest. They would help her build a restaurant — but with one catch. She had to open it back home in Eastern North Carolina, a place to which she swore she would never return.

And so The Chef & the Farmer, located in Kinston, North Carolina, was born. Six years in, Vivian and her restaurant have won numerous accolades, including her selection as a James Beard semi-finalist, but the challenges continue. As the series opens, Vivian and Ben are juggling the restaurant, raising twins and anxiously building their own home — right next door to her parents.

Note that I've posted this in the "Idyll" rather than "Food" file.

Perhaps my pleasure with this PBS series is due to my family's love for Nags Head and indeed the entire East North Carolina region.  At one point we loved all of North Carolina and pondered a retired life there, but our last trip to the Raleigh region showed it had become a traffic choked hell, akin to Virginia Beach.  And then they started electing Democrats.

I avoided "A Chef's Life" for a long time because, duh, the genre has exploded, and most are the same.  But this  has a sweetness to it that I cannot get enough of.  I adore these peole and would like to be their neighbors, and spend time every day at the arster bar.  More and more I'm hankering to  head south.  This one could happen,  because seeing the kids would only require a 6 hour drive each way. For them, LOL.

Clayton Lockett, a four-time felon sentenced to death for shooting 19-year-old Stephanie Neiman with a sawed-off shotgun and watching as two accomplices buried her alive in rural Kay County in 1999 after Neiman and a friend arrived at a home the men were robbing, suffered for 10 minutes when his lethal cocktail was buggered by ironic deus ex machina . Boo-Hoo.

Sterling Stuff

Sterling

It's really simple.  Private conversations between Sterling and his mistress, in which she lead him into areas she knew his views would bring outrage were surreptitiously taped.  The tape was released.  One of the mistress's other boyfriends is Magic Johnson, a part owner of the LA Dodgers.  Now we hear that all this can be made right if the Clippers are sold to a group fronted by Magic Johnson.  What are the odds that Johnson and his group conspired to get the team by staging this outrage.  It's not like this was a big secret.  Everyone has known for years Sterling was like that.  He's been sued and fined for his slumlord activities.  It was just a case of working through his mistress to stage a coup, on behalf of Magic Johnson.  Just look at who benefits.

We're buying who what?

Obama keeps topping himself

"As we're leaving, the Afghan military, they're looking for helicopters," Hoekstra explained. "They want about 90 attack helicopters. All right. You say, 'Hey, great! They're going to be buying 90 helicopters, that's going to be putting a lot of Americans to work.'

"Wrong. We're buying Russian helicopters for the Afghan military, and the interesting thing about helicopters is that they're high-maintenance. So, not only are we buying about a billion dollars' worth of Russian helicopters, but we're also providing the Russian military industrial complex, the people that build these helicopters, we're providing them with maintenance contracts that are multiple numbers of this one billion," he said Monday.

FOOD

Don't look at me; I'm hideous
My favorite sandwich is peanut butter, mayo and lettuce on white bread for chrissake.  I like to cook, but that doesn't make me a food snob.  When I am cooking gourmet however, especially for a live audience in the other room, and don't have something, I use the Cooks Thesaurus.  If  something's too hard, or the chances of blowing the whole thing (see Hollandaise) are high,  I take the expedient option every time.  That's what this is about.

The bossy nagger and hubby were in D.C. last August for a Justin Bieber concert, and stopped by for breakfast on Sunday (by invitation). When I asked, she said their favorite is Eggs Benedict.  I used Knorr.  She laughed out loud. Said it looked hideous, and tasted even more terrible than hideous. And de-linked me when she got home.  Now, however, she's acting like an adult again; being constructive and all.

Wow. I just had grilled cheese on white bread, with a slice of deli pickle and topped w/that Hollandaise!  To die for.  Oafish and snobby behavior, forgotten.

ARCHER

Here's happiness.  You know how you really like a television series, and think you've seen all the episodes?  And then you watch them all over and discover that, somehow, you skipped over an entire 13 episode season!  And it's like you just found  $20 in an old coat?  That just happened  to me with Archer!,  my new best series of all time (Netflix.)  It's comedy genius.  Thank you, that person who mentioned it in an ago comment.

If you walk in place, lifting just your heels, while swinging arms vigorously, fitbit gives you full credit.  I'm not trying to cheat (senseless, that), but I hurt me knee a few days ago and really aggravated it yesterday.  I swing a  5# bar bell in each hand and, believe me, it's a workout.  You're welcome.

PS: cuzzin ricky brings this about Heartbleed (fkm).

3 primary challengers means he wins

Time to put him in the blender

We now know what John Boehner really thinks of his Republican colleagues, and those Americans who gave him a chance to be Speaker in 2010.

On the issues front, Boehner, who faces three primary opponents, revealed that out of all the problems facing the nation, the one that he is willing to go to the wall to achieve is immigration reform.   [...]
By revealing his fealty to the giant corporate and elitist interests ... Boehner made clear what most had suspected for a long while.  The man who was at best a reluctant warrior in the battle to reduce the size and scope of government is willing to risk power for his drinking buddy’s corporate interests. [Boehner's Disdain Spells Trouble]
