Still, neither he nor other House leaders betrayed any serious concern that his tenure was in danger, and his allies leaked a private poll in recent days that claimed he had a comfortable lead over Brat.

... last week they forced veteran Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran into a June 24 runoff, and hope state Sen. Chris McDaniel can prevail then.
In the end, despite help from establishment groups, Cantor's repudiation was complete in an area that first sent him to Congress in 2000.

With votes counted in 99 percent of the precincts, 64,418 votes were cast, roughly a 37 percent increase over two years ago.

When my computer went down in flames a few weeks ago I discovered (using Linux) that this site was blocked.  I'd heard complaints, but had never before run into it.  Why is it blocked?  There's no explanation, but at the same time I discovered that Peoples Cube was similarly block, but unlike mine there was a link to complain, so I did:

 Hi there,
This is Nancy from IObit Support Team.
Thank you for reporting this false positive. With your help, we will provide our users better protection against malicious websites.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you for choosing IObit product to care for your PC

IObit?  The parent of Advanced System Care 7? (in conjunction with Google)?  I don't know why my site is blocked; it could be because I occasionally have roll-over nipples (with NSFW tags), but I don't think so.  At any rate, here's  a burner feed that may by-pass the thought police.  Will someone who is blocked at work try this and let me know if it works?  Thanks.

Strange Stuff

A hundred years before James Cameron turned douchebaggery into an art form at the Oscars, American author Morgan Robertson wrote a shitty book called Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan, about the sinking of an "unsinkable" ocean liner. When you see the cover, you figure you're pretty clearly looking at a fictionalized version of the Titanic story.

The similarities between Robertson's work and the Titanic disaster are so astounding that one has to imagine if White Star Line built Titanic to Robertson's specs as a dare.
No surprise there; it's a story that's been told over and over (there were 13 Titanic movies before Cameron's, including one by the Nazis) but Robertson's book was first.

Where it Gets Weird:

He was so eager to be first, apparently, that he didn't bother to wait for the Titanic to actually sink before writing about it. The Wreck of the Titan was published in 1898, 14 years before RMS Titanic was even finished being [cheaply] built.

[...]

Where it Gets Even Weirder:

While the novel does bear some curious coincidences with the Titanic disaster, there are quite a few things that Robertson got flat wrong. For one, the Titanic did not crash into an iceberg "400 miles from Newfoundland" at 25 knots. It crashed into an iceberg 400 miles from Newfoundland at 22.5 knots.

Wait, what the fuck? That's one hell of a lucky guess!

But Wait - there's more(I know what you're saying;"But Rodge, there are but six insane coincidences; your title said 7."  That's because they missed the Godzilla/Obama thing.)

Michio Kaku explains it all here.

Hello, Welcome to 1936 Germany

'There's an attempt to marginalize people who hold views that are sharply different'

“We must also concern ourselves with the continued danger we face from individuals within our own borders who may be motivated by a variety of other causes from anti-government animus to racial prejudice,” Holder said.
The Justice Department is resurrecting a program designed to thwart domestic threats to the United States, and Attorney General Eric Holder says those threats include individuals the government deems anti-government or racially prejudiced.

The Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee was created in the wake of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing but was scrapped soon after the 2001 terrorist attacks as intelligence and law enforcement officials shifted their focus to threats from outside the country. The committee will be comprised of figures from the FBI, the National Security Division of the Justice Department and the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee.

In his statement announcing the return of the committee, Holder said he remains concerned about the specter of attacks prompted by Islamic extremists, but he said this committee will be tasked with identifying other threats.

“We must also concern ourselves with the continued danger we face from individuals within our own borders who may be motivated by a variety of other causes from anti-government animus to racial prejudice,” Holder said.

According to reporting from Reuters, the American Civil Liberties Union is pushing back against the DOJ plan, fearing “it could be a sweeping mandate to monitor and collect controversial speech.”

Conservative groups are alarmed on multiple levels. First, they see themselves once again the target of an administration that disagrees with them philosophically.

“It appears there’s an attempt to marginalize people who hold views that are sharply different from those of the administration and much of the establishment, said Horace Cooper, co-chairman of the Project 21 National Advisory Board. Project 21 is a network of black conservatives.

FDA Gone Wild

       WHAT THIS GUMMINT DOES

    TEXT

We warned at the time that the ill-conceived Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) of 2011 would tend to choke off many non-industrial food sources. Now the FDA, interpreting FSMA as part of its regulatory process, is moving to ban the aging of cheese on wooden boards, a process that dates back thousands of years and has been practiced safely by many of the world’s finest cheese makers. The agency apparently intends to apply the same standard to imported cheese as well, which means that in addition to devastating artisanal cheese producers in this country, the move would cut off Americans’ access to large numbers of classic European cheeses, many of which, like Comte and Reblochon, “are required to be aged on wood by their standard of identity.” [Jeanne Carpenter, Cheese Underground (Wisconsin); Matt Spiegler, Cheese Notes]

by WALTER OLSON on JUNE 9, 2014

Our coverage of FSMA, including its many-sided impact on traditional and artisanal farm and food practice, is here

And remember boys and girls, the FDA have their own Swat Team.  Several years ago I made a somewhat tortured argument that all laws carry with them, ulimately, the death penalty.  Ahem.

GREEN CRAP

This may come as a shocker to some, but scientists are not always right — especially when under intense public pressure for answers.

Researchers with the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group (PBSG) recently admitted to experienced zoologist and polar bear specialist Susan Crockford that the estimate given for the total number of polar bars in the Arctic was “simply a qualified guess given to satisfy public demand.” [Full]

"Under intense public pressure for answers?" Is that too, too, precious, or what? “... simply a qualified guess given to satisfy public demand!”  Egad.

The global climate alarmists, with their promise of taking the problem to heel by regulating human endeavor, date back to Paul Ehrlich's Population Bomb's premise of "too many people, too much consumption fraud."  None of his predictions came through, but never mind, he'd developed a cult following.  In the following four decades, advocacy of global cooling, then global warming, and now climate change, all caused by human behavior,  and therefore controllable by the right people making the right laws—all of it has been marked by fraud, lies and deceit.  All if it.  And to now excuse themselves by pleading "simply a qualified guess given to satisfy public demand.”  Demand for what?  More government funding.  More control over the economy?  That's what?

If ever you want to know whether a politician is worthy of your vote, Google "NAMEsupports climate change legislation"  If it comes up positive, that person is shallow, and willing to go with the popular flow at best, and at worst just insanely stupid. No exceptions.  A nice party trick would be to ask guests to find a single elected Democrat who passes muster. Ahem.

Captain Jack's Seafood

Oh My
 So ....

A group of 15 year old boys discussed where they should meet for a burger. It was agreed they would meet at the McDonald's next to Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because they only had six dollars among them, they could ride their bikes, and that cute girl in Social Studies lived on the same street and they might see her.

Ten years later, the group of now 25 year old guys, discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the beer was cheap, the bar had free snacks, the house band was good, there was no cover charge, and there were a lot of cute girls.

Ten years later, at 35 years of age, the group discussed where they should meet for dinner—Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the booze was good, it was near their gym, and, if they went late enough, there wouldn't be too many whiny little kids.

Ten years later, at 45, the group discussed where they should meet for dinner—Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the martinis were big and the waitresses were really good looking.

Ten years later, now 55, —Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the prices were reasonable, they have a nice wine list, and fish is good for your cholesterol.

Ten years later, at 65 years—Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the lighting was good and they have an early bird special.

Ten years later, at 75 years of age, — Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the food was not too spicy and the restaurant was handicapped accessible.

Ten years later, at 85 years of age, the group discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because they had never been there before.
