Olds F-88

Quick- Identify this car
(Hint, it just sold for $3,240,000)

1954 Oldsmobile F88 Concept Car (1 of 1)

“
1954 Concept Old’s Rocket F88 – the only one in existence. John S. Hendricks, (Discovery Communications founder) paid in excess of 3 million to acquire this 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Convertible Concept Car .  Michelle Obama would buy two or three in various gaudly colors.

The claim here is made that This is the car that in 1954 could have “killed” the Corvette..  Car culture doesn't support that.  For instance, the only difference between the Chevrolet and Pontiac brands was body trim, the badge, and the cost. The Pontiac had more, and it cost more.  Both survived.  I think experience has shown that more can result in even more.  For instance, and quite unintuitively, it's been shown that a fast food outlet on all four corners of an intersection will generally result in higher per unit sales for all.  Why?   Choice,  and the cluster reinforces consumer trust and acceptance of the concept.

Anyway, if I was  12 years old I'd definitely opt for the gaudier F88.  As a 30-40 year old with the money to buy one however, I'd go for the cleaner lines of the Corvette.  As I near 127,  it's a Bentley.

Ron Swanson, new American hero.

Funny Lovable Guys Who Weren't Supposed To Be Either.

“

Great Fun! Ron Swanson has potential to become the new Archie Bunker.  In his heads-up, El Jefe said,  "Hard to believe he's on NBC."   Maybe not.  Two of  television's top pop icons of all time resulted from left-winger miscalculations. First, Norman Lear's  Archie Bunker (All in the Family).  Quoting from myself in 2005:

“ ... Lear lifted, whole, the BBC television series Till Death Us Do Part. Watch this clip and you'll see what I mean . What appealed to Lear was the Brit version of Archie Bunker who was, with his conservative tirades, the perfect foil for the calm, reasoned socialist clap-trap served back by what would become dotty daughter Gloria, and son-in-law Michael 'Meathead' Stivic (Rob Reiner in a non-acting role).

[...]

Much to Lear's surprise (Liberals are always surprised to discover that their ideas don't work as planned), the American television viewing public saw in Archie Bunker someone who manifested their own hopes and fears;  and validated their own contempt for liberal ideas like "The Great Society."  He was the hero;  Meathead was the fool.    [continued]
Hoes in the Outfield

After a few years Lear simply became heavy handed, and began to force his views in some very unfunny episodes. In one, a war hero friend of Archie's, whose son had been killed in Vietnam, sides with Meathead in an anti-war diatribe, and wishes his son had fled to Canada to avoid the draft. As noxious as the show's content would become, it's own inertia carried it for another few years, but it was no longer particularly funny (Like
MASH, after Alan Alda took control) .Nobody cared when the show ended in a spectacularly crappy one-hour special in 1983.  Except to note how spectacularly crappy the ending was.

Next, Hawkeye Pierce, the smart-ass hero
of Mash. The  1970 film was written by Ring Lardner Jr, (joined the US Communist Party in 1936), and produced by fellow traveler, and uber leftist Robert Altman. The film's anti-war, anti US message went mostly unnoticed by moviegoers, who simply saw funny where they were supposed to see tragedy. The television spin-off (1972 to 1983) started out funny, and ended with leftist Alan Alda (the television Hawkeye) following Lear's formula of writing preachy  left-wing scripts, which he then directed himself delivering.    Nobody cared when the show ended in a spectacularly crappy one-hour special in 1983.  Except to note how spectacularly crappy the ending was.

So, who's writing Ron Swanson's stuff at NBC?  Maybe the right people haven't complained yet.

”

Mine, I think, is the best tool for deciphering often confusing he said- she said  political stuff.  It's this.

If they have to lie about it, they don't have the goods.  And they're liars.  Don't play with them."

Is that simple, or what?  Okay, it's also simplistic, because people with vested ideology and interests will see what they want to see, which is why it's so difficult dealing with democrats.  It's also why they are so dependent on controlling the message; and scandalized by Fox News.  But, I digress.

No political discussion in my lifetime could have benefited more from my rule than man caused climate change (AGW).  First, there are times when the intuitive, common sense answer is wrong, but AGW is not one of them. Simple logic dictates that the Little Ice Age was not caused by  the gasoline engine. And I could go on and on.  Second, since I've been following AGW, and before that AGC (20+ years), no movement has been outed for fraud, deception, and practicing bad science more times than have climate change Goreons.  This is why I feel that any politician who jumped on the Climate Change bandwagon is unfit for any national leadership role.  It indicates a fatal lack of  problem solving ability, or a willingness to kowtow,  or raw stupidity.  A few days ago I saw this on Invincible Armor.

“ Forged documents, false data, coordinated lies and a community dependent on billions of dollars of grants and other monies to support the movement and salaries. What's not to question?

Well, there is at least one question for AGW's disciples; What is science without ethics?

“I hardly know what to say about the latest developments in the Heartland document dump. Profanity seems too weak, and incredulity too tame. . . . Gleick has done enormous damage to his cause and his own reputation, and it’s no good to say that people shouldn’t be focusing on it.
”

Invincible refers to Peter Gleick Confesses to Obtaining Heartland Documents Under False Pretenses.  At some point, I should think, prison becomes the first option when dealing with these people.

The Tudors

The Tudors

I watched the 40th and final episode of The Tudors yesterday, and it goes without saying that I liked the series. But I said it anyway.  English history buffs must suspend that urge to go bonkers over every factual liberty taken (they are legion), and just enjoy the head loppings and wench beddings.  Anyway, it reminded me of  a brilliant  "what if Henry VIII had written his memoirs ... ." book I read some years ago (and intend to reread),  The Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers.   I love this literary device of docu-dramatizing history through a third person (e.g. Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All);  in this case it's Henry's Fool Will Somers.  Great fun, and historically accurate.

English: The Cow-Pock—or—the Wonderful Effects of the New Inoculation!—vide. the Publications of ye Anti-Vaccine Society

Print (color engraving) published June 12, 1802 by H. Humphrey, St. James's Street.
In this cartoon, the British satirist James Gillray caricatured a scene at the Smallpox and Inoculation Hospital at St. Pancras, showing Edward Jenner administering cowpox vaccine to frightened young women, and cows emerging from different parts of people's bodies. The cartoon was inspired by the controversy over inoculating against the dreaded disease, smallpox. The inoculation agent, cowpox vaccine, was rumored to have the ability to sprout cow-like appendages. A serene Edward Jenner stands amid the crowd. A boy next to Jenner holds a container labeled "VACCINE POCK hot from ye COW"; papers in the boy's pocket are labeled "Benefits of the Vaccine". The tub on the desk next to Jenner is labeled "OPENING MIXTURE". A bottle next to the tub is labeled "VOMIT". The painting on the wall depicts worshippers of Obama. Er, Golden Calf.

Cow Pock is a well spring of metaphors, depending on your disposition and outlook.  This seems an easy fit.

Adieu, ‘Mademoiselle’
France bans equivalent of ‘miss’ in government documents

“

Prior to the ban, women were referred to as either as madame (the English equivalent of Mrs.) or mademoiselle (the equivalent of Miss), depending on their marital status. Men are simply referred to as monsieur (Mr.).

The victory is one for the French feminists who earlier this year were able to eliminate the marital distinction from the town of Cesson-Sevigne. [Full]

Nigella is all Donna Reed.  Teapartier, funny, and has a live-and-let-live philosophy.  Gillian McKeith would be repulsed by my very  pheromones and Reagan button. Once Upon a Time in ...

Did I say Fort Worth Texas in 1965?  I meant Tehran, Iran in 1965.  Check out the  Once Upon A Time in Iran slideshow. Once upon a time. Before the  Islamic theocracy.  Although not an Arab nation, like them Persia was also once a fount of advancements in the sciences, mathematics, literature, medicine, and  architecture.  Until things started going backwards for the Arabs in, oh, say the 7th century, AD.  What happened?  I'm just guessing here, but things do  tend to go to hell in a hand basket when people are yoked to a political system which presumes to govern every aspect of their lives. Like when the Ayatollahs snatched power in Iran in the late 1970s.

For your assignment, write a 1500 word essay explaining how Islam is nothing like modern Liberalism.  Or 20 words, it that's all you need.
