A major South Korean retailer has opened what it appears to be the world's first virtual store geared to smartphone users, with shoppers scanning barcodes of products displayed in a Seoul subway station. Homeplus, the nation’s second largest discount chain, is offering 500 items including food, electronics, office supplies and toiletries at its "store" at Seolleung station in the south of the city of 10 million.

Seven pillars and six platform screen doors have been plastered with images of life-size store shelves filled with goods -- such as milk, apples, a bag of rice or school backpacks -- which each carry a small barcode. Shoppers download a related application on their smartphone and make purchases by taking photos of the barcodes. [FULL]

In this model the items are home delivered.  I looked into doing this ten years ago with local businesses.  My plan was to photograph the entire store, mapping images with price and item info,  which allowed peeps to shop on line.  I would charge the store for the service and monthly maintenance .  Where the plan went awry was the execution.  I didn't.  But there was a reason.  It was an overwhelming task, and one that had to be updated quite regularly.  Yes, I could have mortgaged the house, sold a few of the kids and hired people, but I couldn't be bothered.  I'm an idea man, not a long term worker bee.

Anyway, this is an idea that is here to stay.  The local Giant Food stores toyed with some deal where the shopper carried around a device that recorded items as they were carted.  The checkout (but not the bagging) was instantaneous.  As much as I like gadgets, I never tried it, nor did I ever see anyone else using the little price gun thing, but they will not stop trying. This looks like it would work for them nicely in some areas.

The biggest boon, I think, is for the small business entrepreneur.  With no need for brick and mortar (rent), almost anyone can sell anything they have in stock and can deliver- even pizza.  All this of course would require giving government the right to access everything about your every electronic transaction so they can tax it.  Wait.  Obama is already doing that.

COFFEE MACHINES

TECHNO THRILLS

Mr Coffee

Res Ipsa Loquitor Well, that's over.  We had a neighbor and friend who was celebrating his 70th B-day yesterday,  and I elected to do a video  life story.  Took 40 hours to do 10 minutes of tape.  Bur that's not what I'm wanting to tell you about.

With a house full of company,  our coffee maker quit.  It was a Frigidaire piece of crap that  I bought from Woot a few years ago.  One of those deals where they try to add so many bells and whistles that you can scarce make coffee.  It was 1100 watts though.  I tell you that because as near as I can tell, the only variable in making coffee in one of these machines is the water temp.  We ran out and bought this Mr. Coffee at Kohls (for $79.95)
—1300 watts.  It has a feature I really liked on our old  Black and Decker machine, a removable water tank.  Anyway, this is the bottom line.

Been using Seattle's Finest coffee for quite a while,  so have pretty good tongue memory of what it tastes like.  The coffee made in the new machine,
using one ounce for 8 cups, is so superior to what we're use to that I am quite blown away.  And not just me.  All the guests volunteered the same thing.  Only thing I can think of is the 1300 Watts.  And the possibility that Frigidaire was a massive liar about being1100 watts?  Also, this morning I was going to heat the remains of yesterday's coffee for a quick cup before church.  Guess what? The coffee was still hot.  Not real hot, but warmer than warm.

You're welcome.

Yannow, I was saving up some nominees for this week’s award like Oprah, one of the richest women in the world playing the race card. GMAFB! She said that some girl in a Swiss store refused to show her a handbag because she didn’t think she could afford it. The girl denies it. After Oprah’s antics lately, I side with the girl in the store. Evidently, Oprah pulled crap like this right before a movie she had coming out. And she has a movie now. What a coincidence.

But nothing can top the bullshit that happened in Missouri this week. There was a rodeo clown with an Obummer mask and the world went batshit crazy. Rampant racism in Missouri. Turns out there was a “mixed race” couple in the audience and they were offended. Yannow, there is sumpin’ in the Constitution called freedom of speech. Maybe y’all heard of it. It’s right there in the First Amendment. What I cannot find in the Constitution is someone’s right to not be offended. I’m offended that we got whiny ass people who get offended at the drop of a hat.

Do y’all remember when Bush was president? Yannow, the guy that the libs called Chimpy or Bushitler? Did you know that there was a rodeo clown who wore a Bush mask? No big outcry there. Bush was hung and burned in effigy. No big outcry there. Someone even wrote a book [then movie,  Death of a President]  about the assassination of Bush which I know made many liberals progressives [ ... Da Crip nails it!]

Res Ipsa Loquitor Speaking of police states  versus the U.S. Constutution,  Obama's SS have made hanging him in effigy a crime, or at least their warrant to harrass and detain the hangers. Which propmts the question, In Age of Obama, Hanging Effigys Of "That One" Are Now A Crime: Bush, Palin Effigys "Free Speech?"

THESE JUST IN ....

By this time in life my behavior is predictable.  I wait until the last minute, and enjoy the adrenaline rush of trying to complete a three month term paper in 24 hours.  Which is more or less what I've done with my current project, a video presentation that must be ready by tomorrow at 4PM.  So, I'm cracking on with it, but Tim W. sent me some news clips that tickled me, so I'm sharing.

Sometimes I have revelations about stuff.  Sometimes they're about important things, like how to remove inaccessible brain tumors.  Other times, like just now,  it's stuff that's not that consequential, but is in the interest of word etymology.  The origin and historical development of the word "nippy" wasn't known—until just now.  Now it is.

Putin v Obummer

KULTURE - WHOM DO YOU ADMIRE MORE?

Res Ipsa Loquitor I've lately come across a  "conservative Americans admire Putin" meme (deliciously pictorialized HERE).

Didn't  read any of the articles, probably because I could see why without.   Let's be clear; Putin is at heart still a Communist KGB assassin who has rivals liquidated.  Still, he has leadership qualities that no Democrat politician in over 50 years have come close to exhibiting.   Although Obama similarly attempts to theoretically (and possibly in a real sense, ahem) "liquidate" anyone who threatens  him;  this is America, not Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia. So,  if you don't by now fear and despise Obama, there's something terribly wrong with you.

By the by, I did look at The leftist Daily Beast's lede.  They reason that Putin's popularity amongst Americans is much simpler to understand:

"Thirty years ago, American conservatives declared Russia the enemy. But now that Putin has declared war on gays, the religious right is in full support of its freedom-limiting tactics. By James Kirchick."

More SEAL TEAM SIX STUFF

“
AHEM

Res Ipsa Loquitor

I was running about this morning,  making the rounds of various duty and doody stations while somewhat listening to WCBM in the background.  On air was a father of one of  the Seal Team 6 members killed in the the Chinook helicopter crash.  This is not a transcript, but excerpts from other sources that include some of what he claimed.  Stuff I wasn't aware of.

[...] Shortly before the CH-47 Chinook helicopter took off on a rescue mission (operation Extortion 17), seven Afghan commandos who were on the passenger list were replaced by other Afghan military officials.

It remains unclear why the manifest was incorrect, raising red flags among the victims’ families. They have noted that their sons didn’t trust Afghan soldiers. One was quoted as saying, “They are loyal to the highest bidder.”

In the transcript related to the Pentagon’s probe, a Defense official confirmed that all seven names of the Afghan soldiers were incorrect.

The official said, “I cannot talk to the back story of why…” before being interrupted by another Department of Defense employee.

The Chinook was shot down by Afghan militants, and all 38 on board perished.  Among the dead were 30 Americans, including 22 Navy SEALS (some Seal Tem Six), seven Afghan soldiers and one Afghan translator. Their bodies were later recovered, but the helicopter’s black box was not. Pentagon officials have said that it could not be recovered, citing a flash flood that happened soon after the assault.

All the bodies were cremated. The Pentagon has defended the cremation to the soldiers’ families, saying the bodies were badly burned.

Chaffetz, however, said he has seen a photo of a deceased SEAL that was not.

“The body I saw didn’t need to be cremated,” Chaffetz said [full]

The dad further alleged that his and other Seal family homes had been "infiltrated," and family papers shuffled through.  He feels someone was looking for letters home that carried details of the bin-Laden raid.   In addition,  this was made possible because, in his words, "Eric Holder and Biden allowed the names and home addresses of Seal Team Six members to be made public."

It's impossible to confirm rumors that all but one of the Seals on the bin-Laden mission are now dead, but it has been confirmed that some of them were on this helicopter, and that "insurgents were boasting on the Internet they had taken out Team 6 shortly after the helicopter crashed."

This so closely parallels  the Benghazi team cover-up that my head is spinning.  There are not isolated incidents involving this Administration, which makes this sort of  rubbish bitterly outrageous.!

Viking Sword Technology

MANLY STUFF FOR MANLY MEN
Secrets of the Viking Sword

The Vikings were among the fiercest warriors of all time. Yet only a select few carried the ultimate weapon of their era: the feared Ulfberht sword. Fashioned using a process that would remain unknown to the Vikings' rivals for centuries, the Ulfberht was a revolutionary high-tech tool as well as a work of art. Considered one of the greatest swords ever made, it remains a fearsome weapon more than a millennium after it last saw battle. But how did Viking sword makers design and build the Ulfberht, and what was its role in history? Now, NOVA uses cutting edge science and old-fashioned detective work to reconstruct the Ulfberht and finally unravel the "Secrets of the Viking Sword."

Manly men  give this Five Stars!

From My iBIDET

I have a week to finish a project I'm doing for someone and everything is running amok.  The latest being that my camera's 30GB Sandisk suddenly became "Write Protected."  I spent two fricking hours on this only to discover (I know, you knew about it) that there is a Write protection tab on that little bitty, size of my fingernail,  drive!  I had to put on reading glasses and take it to sunlight to see the slide.  So this is where dotage has led me.

Is Terry McAuliffe’s Million Car A Year Factory Completely Phony?

Terry McAuliffe's company told Chinese investors it was building a factory to produce up to a million cars a year -- a million cars – that’s more than Chrysler’s total sales of domestic cars and trucks combined. Now people are asking where did some $28.5 million go, but Fast Terry and GreenTech Automotive aren't talking.

Controversial Startup Could Kill Career Of Rising Dem Star...
Right.  Fake Indian, Massive Liar, and Real Moron Elizabeth Warren has firmly set the standard.

  •  Mr. Booker personally has obtained money for the start-up, called Waywire, from influential investors, including Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman.
  • Mr. Booker revealed that his stake in the company was worth $1 million to $5 million. Taken together, his other assets were worth no more than $730,000.
  • That revelation, with just a week left in Mr. Booker’s campaign for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate, shows how a few tech moguls and entrepreneurs, many of them also campaign donors, not only made a financial bet on the mayor’s political future but also provided the brainpower and financing to help create a company that could make him very rich.
  • Waywire has also provided jobs for associates of Mr. Booker: the son of a top campaign supporter and his social media consultant, who is now on his Senate campaign staff.
Derail his political carreer?  LOL. If he gets the nomination, and he will, say hello to the next crooked US Senator from New Jersey. Fake Indian, Massive Liar, and Real Moron Elizabeth Warren has set the standard for DEMS (In states where they count ballots).

New Jersey's other Senator  Democrat Bob Memnedez has so many ethic investigations going on that Clinton Fatigue seems to set in. The ethics committee  hit Charles Rangel with a 13-count Statement of Alleged Violation after a nearly two-year probe into his finance (Gross Tax Evasion)..  H escaped.jail by giving up his Ways & Means Chair; an option only available to Democrats   Both the LA Times and Nevada newspapers have  exposed   Harry Reid's crime family (literally.  He's still skating.
