Wretched heat

90° temps and 85% humidity the past two days sap your strength.  Broke into a sweat tsunami just changing a bicycle seat.  I'm thinking, "how in hell can roofers work on days like this?" when the garbage truck pulled up and the guy hoisted 3 large and very full barrels of our stuff.  Now I'm thinking that garbage men are probably the toughest sumbitches there is; prolly waltz through Navy Seal practice.  Except for the swim part.

Selfy Interests

We are a popular restaurant for both locals and tourists alike. Having been in business for many years, we noticed that although the number of customers we serve on a daily basis is almost the same today as it was 10 years ago, the service just seems super slow even though we added more staff and cut back on the menu items...

One of the most common complaints on review sites against us and many restaurants in the area is that the service was slow and/or they needed to wait a bit long for a table.

We decided to hire a firm to help us solve this mystery, and naturally the first thing they blamed it on was that the employees need more training and that maybe the kitchen staff is just not up to the task of serving that many customers.

Like most restaurants in NYC we have a surveillance system, and unlike today where it's a digital system, 10 years ago we still used special high capacity tapes to record all activity. At any given time we had 4 special Sony systems recording multiple cameras. We would store the footage for 90 days just in case we needed it for something.

The firm we hired suggested we locate some of the older tapes and analyze how the staff behaved 10 years ago versus how they behave now. We went down to our storage room but we couldn't find any tapes at all.

We did find the recording devices, and luckily for us, each device has 1 tape in it that we simply never removed when we upgraded to the new digital system!

The date stamp on the old footage was Thursday July 1, 2004.

14 out of 45 customers take pictures of each other with the food in front of them or as they are eating the food. This takes on average another 4 minutes as they must review and sometimes retake the photo.

The restaurant was very busy that day. We loaded up the footage on a large monitor, and next to it on a separate monitor loaded up the footage of Thursday July 3 2014, with roughly the same amount of customers as ten years before.

I will quickly outline the findings. We carefully looked at over 45 transactions in order to determine the data below:

2004:

Customers walk in.

They gets seated and are given menus, out of 45 customers 3 request to be seated elsewhere.

Customers on average spend 8 minutes before closing the menu to show they are ready to order.

Waiters shows up almost instantly takes the order.

Appetizers are fired within 6 minutes, obviously the more complex items take longer. (continued)

Archie Blows Jughead

Rumor: Archie was a heroin addict and famous necrophiliac
For most of Archie Andrew's life, the red-headed comic book icon's biggest quandary was whether he liked Veronica or Betty.

Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO, defended Archie's demise being a lesson about gun violence and diversity.

The character's impending death comes in Wednesday's installment of "Life with Archie," a spin-off series that centers on grown-up renditions of Archie and his Riverdale pals. It brings a bold conclusion to Archie Comics' four-year-old modern makeover of the squeaky-clean, all-American character.

Freckle-faced Archie will meet his demise when he intervenes in an assassination attempt on senator Kevin Keller, Archie Comics' first openly gay character, who's pushing for more gun control in Riverdale. Archie's death, which was first announced in April, will mark the conclusion of the "Life with Archie" series.

"I think Archie Comics has taken a lot of risks in recent years, and this is the biggest risk they've taken yet," said Jonathan Merrifield, a longtime Archie fan who hosts the Riverdale Podcast about all things Archie. "If it shakes things up a little bit, and people end up checking it out and seeing what's going on in Archie Comics, it will be a risk that was smartly taken."

While casual fans likely still associate Archie with soda shops and sock hops — and that's still holds true — for the very much alive teenage character in the original "Archie" series — Archie was thrust into adulthood with the launch of "Life with Archie" in 2010. The series kicked off after alternate futures were envisioned where the love-struck do-gooder married both Veronica and Betty.

Over the past four years, storylines in the more socially relevant series aimed at adult Archie fans have included Kevin's marriage to his husband, the death of longtime teacher Ms. Grundy, Archie love interest Cheryl Blossom tackling breast cancer and Jughead and friends dealing with financial struggles.

It's been a shift not unlike other changes in the modern comic book landscape, where Spider-Man's alter-ego is a multi-racial teenager and Wonder Woman wears pants.

"Every few years, we see a comic book tackling an issue that could be considered provocative," said Dave Luebke, owner of Dave's Comics in Richmond, Virginia. "It's interesting that the ending of 'Life with Archie' involves multiple social issues, but it's not surprising." (Luebke sold his rare 1942 "Archie" No. 1 comic book in 2009 for $38,837 at a Dallas auction.)

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and several Archie fans praised Archie Comics' decision to have the character sacrifice himself to save Kevin, who is depicted in "Life with Archie" as a married military veteran turned senator.

"In recent years, 'Life with Archie' has become one of the most unique books on the shelves by using its characters to address real world issues — from marriage equality to gun control — in a smart but accessible way," said Matt Kane, GLAAD's director of entertainment media. "Though the story is coming to a close, we look forward to seeing Kevin and Archie's stories continue in their remaining titles."

Others have voiced their concern on Archie Comics' Facebook page and other online forums that the character's death was unnecessary or too politicized.

Guessing here boss—It's really about squeezing some worth out of an over-the-hill comic book  series —  that doesn't sell squat— and currying favor with entertainment elitists so as to start getting invites to A-List dinner parties on the Manhattan's upper east side and L.A.  Am I right?

Holder, Again!

The U.S. Department of Justice has sent a member of its Community Relations Service team to investigate a Nebraska parade float that criticized President Obama.

A Fourth of July parade float featured at the annual Independence Day parade in Norfolk sparked criticism when it depicted a zombie-like figure resembling Mr. Obama standing outside an outhouse, which was labeled the “Obama Presidential Library.”

The Nebraska Democratic Party called the float one of the “worst shows of racism and disrespect for the office of the presidency that Nebraska has ever seen.”

Read more:

"The float’s creator, Dale Remmich, has said the mannequin depicted himself, not President Obama."  I believe him because the mannequin doesn't make sense if it's Obama.  But, even if it was depicting Obama, what the hell is racist about it?  Oh, right.  It criticises Dear Leader.

SO HANG IN THERE
It is not unlawful to shoot at targets depicting a president, nor is it against the law to hang one in effigy.

Jeremy's Slippery Slope

Slippery Slopes

More RUH ROH
After 21 years in a marriage that weathered rumoured infidelities and plenty of career controversies, Jeremy Clarkson is heading for a second divorce.

In a week in which Clarkson was severely reprimanded by the BBC over alleged racist language, his wife Frances’s decision to seek a divorce will be another dent in the ego, and the bank balance, of the famously bullish Top Gear presenter.

  BUT WAIT! There's more
Top Gear is to be investigated by Ofcom following complaints presenter Jeremy Clarkson used a racist term, it has been announced.

An episode of Top Gear, broadcast on BBC Two on March 16, showed Clarkson using the word "slope", as an Asian man walked over a bridge in Burma.

The scene led to a complaint of ''casual racism'', with Clarkson accused of referring to "people of different races in pejorative terms".
The complaint will now be investigated in full by watchdog Ofcom, which will consider whether the broadcaster breached its codes.

Jezza is, as you know, someone I very much enjoy, and respect.  This is the very sort of crap he rails against on Top Gear, and now it appears they think they've got him.

Unreleased Bill Murray
film resurfaces online

1984 sci-fi film, Nothing Lasts Forever

Whilst Bill Murray was revelling in the success of Ghostbusters in the summer of 1984, he was also involved in another film, though this was one that didn’t quite match the success of Ghostbusters. In fact, it was canned before being released.

The sci-fi comedy Nothing Lasts Forever was directed by Tom Schiller, at the time renowned for his short films on Saturday Night Live, and starred both Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in supporting roles as well as Gremlins’ Zach Galligan. Schiller described it as “the weird move I’d always wanted to make” and sees an aspiring artist joining a group of radicals who plan to drive a bus to the moon. The film was intended for a September release, so as to capitalise on the success of both Ghostbusters and Gremlins, but MGM postponed the release date and then canned it altogether.

Nothing Lasts Forever has never been released officially in theatres, and nor has it been released on home media. But the cast and crew often put on screenings of the film, usually at Murray's insistence; now the whole thing has resurfaced online. The film has been available on YouTube for 3 years but is only now being rediscovered. It’s a spectacularly odd film, as one might expect from that era of Murray films, featuring musical numbers, jumps into colour, and clips from old movies thrown in for good measure.

Schiller has said that he never received a straight answer as to why the film was canned, although he believes it was because the film wasn’t “commercial” enough or that the number of old movie clips caused copyright problems for the studio. [here]

You're welcome

HYMN # 365 .

              HYMN # 365

This is too funny - but I suspect the minister didn't appreciate it.

A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis he said, 'If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river.'

With even greater emphasis he said, 'And if I had All the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river.'

And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he Said, 'And if I had all the  whiskey in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river.'

Sermon complete, he sat down...

The choir leader stood very cautiously and announced, with a smile (nearly laughing), 'For our closing song, Let us sing Hymn #365, 'Shall We Gather at the River.'

See you in a camper down by the river!
Bring your own glass!

Firebrand Steve Stockman

FIREBRANDS NEEDED

Firebrand Rep. Steve Stockman filed a motion Thursday directing congressional police to arrest ex-IRS official Lois Lerner for contempt of Congress and take her to the D.C. jail for questioning.

The Texas Republican filed a resolution that would instruct Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to issue a warrant for Lerner’s arrest, commanding the Sergeant-at-Arms “to arrest and take into custody forthwith, wherever to be found, the body of Lois G. Lerner, and bring her to the bar of the House without delay to answer to the charge of contempt of its authority, breach of its privileges, and gross and wanton insult to the integrity of its proceedings.”

Firebrand?  Indeed.

I stand before God and my countryman,  and ask,  why isn't Lerner already facing a Grand Jury?  And Lois Lerner is not the only person in this administration who deserves demands similar treatment.

Dale Earnhardt

  Jeff Gordon announcement
Mooresville, NCJeff Gordon announced today that he was firing his entire pit crew.

This announcement followed Gordon's decision to take advantage of President Obama's stimulus scheme for employing Black Harlem teenagers.

The decision to hire them was brought about by a recent documentary on how welfare-drawing black street gangs from Harlem were able to remove a set of wheels in less than 6 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Gordon's existing crew could only do it in 8 seconds with thousands of dollars' worth of high tech equipment. It was thought to be politically correct and a bold move by Gordon's management team, as most races are won or lost in the pits.

UPDATE  Gordon, however, got more than he bargained for. At the crew's first practice session, not only was the inexperienced black crew able to change all 4 wheels in under 6 seconds, but within
9 seconds they had repainted it, altered the VIN number, and sold the car to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., for 10 cases of Bud, a bag of weed, and some photos of Jeff Gordon's wife in the shower.
