The state counters that such a redress would have a “‘catastrophic effect’ on the institutions and harm students of all races.” As reported by The Baltimore Sun, this case stems from a 2006 lawsuit when a “coalition of alumni, faculty and advocates” from HBCs “argued that marquee academic programs at well-funded, traditionally white public universities erode similar programs at historically black colleges.” Court-ordered mediation failed to come up with solutions in 2011 and 2014, so both sides ended up back in court. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law argued on behalf of the plaintiffs that the case is akin to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education. Showing a picture of a “monkey smoking a cigarette” that had been taped to one locker, he said, “As a fire chief here, I cannot afford nor tolerate [racism].” But several firefighters refused, and ultimately were sent home.
