Two Smarts

So I'm perusing You Tube and discover a long list of complete audio books—for the taking.   My Story by Elizabeth Smart- Unabridged Audible Edition grabbed my eye.  Took about 2 minutes to realize I'd confused Elizabeth Smart with Pam Smart.  Pam was the very hot teacher who sexually seduced some Jr. High boys so they'd kill her husband.  Remember?  It was dramatized in the movie To Die For starring the even hotter Nicole Kidman in the lead.  Elizabeth Smart was a 14 year old  girl in Utah; stolen from her bed by a sexual deviant and psychopath named Brian David Mitchell.  He kept her in a dirt cave where he raped and abused her for 8 months.  Did I mention that his wife was an accomplice?  One hour into the book (Elizabeth, now 21, narrates) I folded.  Since she wrote the book I knew he didn't kill her and wanted to find out about his execution; no doubt in my mind that was going to happen. Gary Gilmore. The next day I went back and found Elizabeth Smart kidnapping documentary - [Kidnapping documentary 2015].  Wow.  I think you'll find it riveting.

106 days. PS- That meter has now roll backward, meaning we're making more than we use! It took 106 days from presentation to a fully active solar panel system.  Our cost is nothing; our savings will be manifest on the next utility bill (although half that billing cycle will be pre-solar).  And, there's this. SunEdison and TerraForm Power Announce Definitive Agreement to Acquire Vivint Solar for $2.2 Billion I don't know how that will impact us (we have a contract vetted by a lawyer), but it does talk to legitimacy.  It will also make SunEdison-Vivent the largerst solar panel provider. Our guy told us that we project to generate 5.5 GW Hours (or something) which he says is very, very high.  A lot of that has to to with our house facing dead east (1°); and this. By the by; the incentive that several states are offering (to underwrite the solar panel expense) will end on Jan, 1, 2016. Vivint Solar Update

VIVINT SOLAR ENERGY

PREVIOUSLY "... anyone know anything about VIVINT.SOLAR?" : The deal with Vivant is, in our case, is they will sell us energy collected from "their panels" for 10.5 cents per kwh. Pur current cost is around 36 cents. If we use less than what is generated, the excess is sold back to BG&E and credited to us. There are ZERO costs involved for the installation; there are no battery devices involved. This all sounds pretty sweet. However, even while the sales guy was pitching us I Googled them. While there were just a few entries on the consumer page, all were negative. Yesterday the surveyor was here a 8AM and did a full roof sun collection survey on our roof and told us when he was finished that he's sure we will qualify and get panels. On the upside is the promise of reducing energy costs, and but also the positive effect it ought have when we sell. I sent the contract to our son who now living in Utah (Vivant's home). While going through the packet I noticed that the salesman did not leave his workup sheets. I feel uneasy which is why these queries.  - April 28th Had many requests for updates on Vivint's offer of free solar panels .  Here's a brief summary of how this made sense for us after some due diligence. The People's State of MD (some other states are also on board with this) are fining BGE about one million dollars a day until they show proper progress toward promoting renewable energy.  That right there is the incentive.  BGE not only pay agents like Solar City, Vivint, et. al., to find good candidates (lots of sun), they supply the panels.  They allow the agent (Vivint) to sell generated electricity to the homeowner at, in our case, 10.5¢ kWh (we currently pay about 35¢).  In effect then, Vivint is renting our roof for 20 years.  Vivint will also collect all federal and state rebates.  There are no batteries; nothing is saved locally.  Our initial concerns were an abundance of bad Googled reviews from people who'd dealt with Vivint.  Most were about not getting response back about what was going on; probably people who failed the test (a guy comes out and surveys your sun footprint), and the sales person was not considerate enough to tell them.  One claimed that after a few months they were actually paying more for electricity than before.  That's only possible if the owner started using considerably more power, like buying room air conditioners for every room when they had none before.  Another claimed the installer damaged his roof. Vivint is a Utah company with a good history, but  new to the solar game. Fortunately we have a son who's a big shot corporate lawyer, and who just bought a home in Utah.  Sent him the contract to check it out.  They passed muster. We said okay. We were scheduled to have our install on June 30, but our salesman called Friday and said they had a crew available to install this Saturday.  Since you can opt out of the deal up to the point where they're climbing the ladder, I'm guessing someone did just that.  We said OK.  They showed up around noon, and less than three hours later had installed 34 panels—worth $44,000 according to the state permit— and were gone.  Now we await BGE's installation of the collection meter.  FWIW, the installer said his mom had the panels installed.  Her first month's bill was 6¢.  We'll see.  The pitch of our roof is such that we can't see the panels unless we go across the street, which is the view you see.

Aladdin

Here's some handy information for ROKU users.  Yesterday g~daughter  said she'd like to watch the movie Aladdin.  Being g~parents, we of course wanted to comply.  All MoSup could find after doing a ROKU wide search were two.  One (Amazon) was $2.95, but was in Spanish or some other foreign thing.  The other was something other than the Disney.  I Googled online and found that YouTube had several choices, including one in HD.  I went back to ROKU, scrolled down to YOU TUBE and there it was.  I was waiting for instructions on how to pay an anticipated  rental fee when it started playing. Sumbitch!!  Later: she grew tired of it half way so I'm glad it was free.

What's behind the huge price jump for some generic drugs? They cited the example of the asthma drug albuterol sulfate. The average cost for a bottle of 100 pills was $11 last October, the pair said. The average charge by this April was up to $434. The antibiotic doxycycline hyclate cost $20 last October for a bottle of 500 tablets, the congressmen observed. By April, the price was $1,849. "Most generics are increasing in price by an average 10% a year," said Bryan Birch, chief executive of Truveris, a New York company that monitors prescription drug costs. "But we've seen some popular drugs increase by more than 650% in the last year." He cited simvastatin, the generic equivalent of cholesterol drug Zocor, and clomipramine hydrochloride, the generic version of antidepressant Anafranil. Prices for each rose more than 650% from June 2013 to this June, Birch said. He said consumers often are unaware of such huge price hikes because they face only a copay when they buy meds at a drugstore. The skyrocketing costs are borne primarily by insurance companies, which subsequently raise people's premiums to accommodate the greater expenses, Birch said. We've been watching things on Free TV and Putlocker, and last night, I tried to fire up Popcorn Time, and it wouldn't work.  So.... I tried to download other versions, none would load. I contacted a friend down in Cuenca, and he had run into the same problem..... he found that, if you scroll down on the Google search page for Popcorn Time downloads, there is a new version out there:   xxxxx.se  that works like a charm.  The selection is GREAT, as is the quality.  A nice, new feature is:  If you go to TV shows... they have future shows listed for series, that haven't been released yet (Mad Men, Justified, Ray Donovan, True Detective, etc.....).... you can't watch them, but they are listed. Also, we have already watched the entire new season of Downton Abbey (except for the Xmas episode), on Free TV ( http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/ )......as far as we know, it hasn't been released by PBS for viewing in the States yet.  My friend in Ecuador tells me that some people have told him (as they have told me) that once you locate a program and try to view it, the services try to load crap on your computer...which you have the option to load or not..... NEVER load anything. For each episode of Downton Abbey, we used the Vodlocker server, and it never suggested that we download anything. Also, we are finding MANY movies (the good versions) on Putlocker, that are still in the theaters.  Sometimes, they may have foreign language subtitles, but a few minutes into a movie, and you become unaware of them. Unreleased Bill Murray film resurfaces online 1984 sci-fi film, Nothing Lasts Forever Whilst Bill Murray was revelling in the success of Ghostbusters in the summer of 1984, he was also involved in another film, though this was one that didn’t quite match the success of Ghostbusters. In fact, it was canned before being released. The sci-fi comedy Nothing Lasts Forever was directed by Tom Schiller, at the time renowned for his short films on Saturday Night Live, and starred both Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in supporting roles as well as Gremlins’ Zach Galligan. Schiller described it as “the weird move I’d always wanted to make” and sees an aspiring artist joining a group of radicals who plan to drive a bus to the moon. The film was intended for a September release, so as to capitalise on the success of both Ghostbusters and Gremlins, but MGM postponed the release date and then canned it altogether. Nothing Lasts Forever has never been released officially in theatres, and nor has it been released on home media. But the cast and crew often put on screenings of the film, usually at Murray's insistence; now the whole thing has resurfaced online. The film has been available on YouTube for 3 years but is only now being rediscovered. It’s a spectacularly odd film, as one might expect from that era of Murray films, featuring musical numbers, jumps into colour, and clips from old movies thrown in for good measure. Schiller has said that he never received a straight answer as to why the film was canned, although he believes it was because the film wasn’t “commercial” enough or that the number of old movie clips caused copyright problems for the studio. Electronic Liberry All you need is a library card and you're in business. Sign in  with your number, and  have access to the books, magazines, newspapers, audio books, tapes, etc.  available in your local library.  Find a book you like, and you're sent to Amazon (there are other outlets) where they  send it to your Kindle (or tablet).  If the library's copy is out on borrow,  you can put a hold on it and be notified when it's available.  Just like the real deal. The first book I borrowed was 50 Shades of Gray  because it was displayed in the popular book section, and I recognized it as a hot topic a few years ago.   Other than that, I had no idea what it was about.  It is a girl Oh My book, which means-given the contents-  it's a bloke book too.  Similar to the Nightstand pulp sex books of  your yoot.   Not particularly well written (IMO), but extremely graphic and full of ... well, everything.  I went through about three hundred pages pretty quick, then suddenly lost interest.  Evidently women today dream of being subjected to all things that are largely man fantasy to begin with.  Who knew? The book I really like though is American Sniper (I borrowed the audio book (sample listen available). Gripping, eye-opening, and powerful, American Sniper is the astonishing autobiography of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle, who is the record-holding sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle has more than 150 officially confirmed kills (the previous American record was 109), though his remarkable career total has not been made public by the Pentagon. It's narrated by John Pruden.  He has the Texas thing down pat (Chris Kyle is a Texan),  and has perfect pitch for manly men characters, and Chris Kyle is that.   I stuff my iPad into my sweatshirt and earphone it  every time I take a walk.  Doing a lot of walking because of it, and trouncing MoSup in Fit Bit (had 6400 steps by 7AM today).   Helluva book.  I'll be sorry when it ends.  Aside.  I went to the library to find out how it all worked. The lady gave me 2 sheets (typed both sides)  of various procedures and directions.  Couldn't get it done without them.
