Eating Pelosi For Lunch

“How Muslims define their own religion is of no interest to the Times. That would complicate the story too much. Readers might discover that Trump and Stephen Bannon are simply taking the authoritative definers of Islam at their word.

TELL  him you are a Muslim, tell him you are a Muslim,” Nancy Pelosi instructed Congressman Andre Carson at an anti-Trump rally on Monday, moments after she had just introduced him as a “Muslim member of Congress.” She apparently felt that the crowd hadn’t sufficiently gotten the point.

Pelosi normally rattles on about the dangers of “religion in politics,” but on Monday night she very much wanted religion in it — and not just any religion, but the most patriarchal of them. To see feminists hawking Islam so feverishly is an amusing spectacle, especially since a day or so later Pelosi had recovered her fear of religion in the public square and creeping Christian patriarchy. She cast Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch as a gift to the religious right — one that imperils all women, not to mention those Americans who “breathe air, drink water, eat food, take medicine, or in any way interact with the courts.”

The story also informs readers that the Muslim Brotherhood is “largely nonviolent”
Pelosi’s comment, in sheer battiness, exceeds even Ted Kennedy’s histrionics over “Robert Bork’s America.” Kennedy envisioned Bork busting down bedroom doors, re-segregating lunch counters, forcing women into back alleys, and confiscating Darwin’s books, but he stopped short of accusing Bork of threatening to cut off people’s access to air.

At the very moment Pelosi and company forbid any criticism of Sharia law, they rip into Gorsuch as a “religious liberty zealot.” They mock those who worry about encroaching jihadists, then freak out over an Episcopalian judge.

[Full]

The media is forever demanding that Christians take a “serious look” at their religion’s lack of modern enlightenment, then declare any criticism of the Koran “Islamophobia.”

“A Sinister Perception of Islam Now Steers the White House,” blared a Thursday headline on the front page of the New York Times. Could anyone imagine it running an equivalent headline about Obama’s White House and Christianity — “A Sinister Perception of Catholicism Now Steers the White House”? Later, the paper changed “sinister perception” to “dark view of Islam.”

Whether or not leading imams hold a “sinister perception” of the West never figures into the story. Not a single one of their open declarations of jihad is quoted in the article. How Muslims define their own religion is of no interest to the Times. That would complicate the story too much. Readers might discover that Trump and Stephen Bannon are simply taking the authoritative definers of Islam at their word.

[...]The story contains such laughable paragraphs as:

[Critics of Islam] warn about the danger to American freedoms supposedly posed by Islamic law, and have persuaded several state legislators to prohibit Shariah’s use. It is a claim that draws eye rolls from most Muslims and scholars of Islam, since Muslims make up about 1 percent of the United States population and are hardly in a position to dictate to the other 99 percent.

How would the Times know that “most Muslims” roll their eyes at talk of Islamic influence in America? What omniscience the paper possesses. How convenient that “most Muslims” share the exact same sensibility as the reporters on the story. ....

RIP CONNIE

"Worst Possible News"

Connie duToit

My beloved wife Connie passed away this afternoon at about 3pm, of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lungs), brought on by her cancer. Her passing was sudden, but painless -- and if there's anything to be gained from this, it's that she was spared a long period of pain from the cancer that was killing her slowly.

She's survived by me, daughter Wendy (29), son David (26) and stepson Jack (27). Her funeral will probably be on Monday January 6, and will be for family only. (We are not given to big events, and would prefer just to keep it quiet.)

I will keep anyone who's interested up to date on what happens to me, but life goes on, and so will I. Please forgive the mass mailing, but I couldn't face the thought of writing the same kind of letter to the dozens of people who knew and loved my wife.

Best wishes to all.

"Yesterday's New York Times editorial ...

  • Mark Finkelstein: "Yesterday's New York Times editorial condemning the nomination of Neil Gorsuch, contained a stunning admission.  The Times wrote that, as was Scalia, Gorsuch is an [emphasis added] "originalist, meaning he interprets the Constitution’s language to mean what it was understood to mean when it was written — an approach that has led both men to consistently conservative results." And so the Times admits that if the Constitution is interpreted in accordance with the intentions of the Founders, the results would be "consistently conservative." The only way liberal judges can achieve their political ends is to ignore those intentions. They are compelled to call the Constitution a "living document" that means whatever they say it means. In doing so, they trash our most important national treasure in the name of politics.  At least we now have the liberal newspaper of record on the record, in essence admitting that."

Who is this guy Orwell?

As the author of this piece in today's American Thinker points out, most people today (especially Millennials) have not studied George Orwell's 1984 in school (probably because the curriculum is more devoted to books like Heather Has Two Mommies).

And yet Orwell is being invoked now by the Left to characterize the Trump administration and its supporters, calling Kellyanne Conway's term "alternative facts" an example of Orwellian Newspeak (she probably should have used the term "the rest of the story"). But it is the relentless (and increasingly desperate) propaganda from the Left that is giving us the best examples of Newspeak (what is "political correctness" but Newspeak?), doublethink, the mutability of the past and, above all, the concept that "Ignorance is Strength".

[I recommend that you read this piece at the original AT site, because it's chock full of links illustrating most of its references, and those links will probably be inoperative in this e-mail.]

Or 1857 in India?

If California declares itself a “sanctuary state,” it is saying that it is no longer obeying the laws of the United States. In other words, it has seceded from the nation, just as surely as Southern states seceded from the Union in 1861.

President Trump will have no choice but to treat California as President Lincoln treated the secessionist South in 1861. He will send federal forces into Sacramento to seize the Capitol and take the governor into custody. He must federalize the California National Guard, as Eisenhower did in the South during the school-segregation crisis. He will require the resignation of every mayor, sheriff and police chief who signed on to the sanctuary state and who refused to carry out the duties of their offices. Any who do not resign will be taken into federal custody.

No federal funding will go to California until a new government is installed. Any physical resistance will be met with force. Any other state contemplating sanctuary status must be given an object lesson of what will become of them.

By the way, once California has been declared to be in a state of secession, its entire congressional delegation, including both senators (both Democrats, by the way), will not be able to vote in Congress. The precedent was set during and after the Civil War. Any other states with delusions of grandeur may want to consider that.

It seems skoonj has been channeling me.  Had the very thing in my memory queue

Was perusing comments to Media ‘Underplayed’ How Hated Hillary Clinton Was in the Heartland and willhen50's stood out for content and concisenesses.  Scanning down, I found another comment thatonly now, as I'm constructing this, do I notice it's the same guy.  So,what the hell, I'm buying him a round.

    • The problems in the Middle East would never have happened if Obama didn't instigate the toppling of governments where stability was achieved. Egypt, Libya, and Syria seemed to have been his objective to put in the Muslim Brotherhood. He used American aircraft to attack a sovereign country who was no threat to America or American's. He even tried to influence an election in a country who was an ally.
What is worse, this Middle East turmoil made countries unstable and under the influence of Islamic Extremists who killed an American Ambassador and 3 other Americans and Obama uses the excuse of a video created by an American in America protected by the 1st Amendment and throws him in jail for a year. The truth is the "rebels" that were armed by the US turned on us and became TERRORISTS, ISLAMIC-EXTREMISTS, and ISIS.

The problem with welcoming people who have a belief system that is contradictory to the Constitution, eventually these people will get into power and change or eliminate it completely. Obama showed a bias to the Constitution and American ideals and he created executive orders that proved it. His actions where he seemed repulsed at the longtime American influence with our allies and toppling Muslim governments where stability in the region was already achieved by American influence. Going around the world and apologizing for the nonexistent American Colonialism, bowing to a king displaying weakness, and playing golf while American's are being beheaded is inexcusable.

Scalia Hearts Gorsuch

The only downside to Neil Gorsuch's SCOTUS
nomination is he can't become Chief Justice.  Yet.

SNIPS from "Chris Matthews: Dems who vote for Gorsuch “will have to answer” for it for 30 years."

On MSNBC this evening, Chris Matthews cautioned Democratic Senators that if they vote to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, they will have to answer for it for the rest of their political career.

His reasoning was a supremely political one: that at age 49, Gorsuch is likely to be on the Court for 30 years. And that any Dem voting to confirm him would have to answer, over all those years, for his decisions on controversial issues such as abortion and gun rights: “it will be on you,” warned Matthews.

Note: Earlier, Matthews predicted that the Gorsuch nomination will fail because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will not invoke the “nuclear option.” And since, according to Matthews, no Dems will vote to confirm, the nomination will fall short of the required 60 votes.

This Insurrectionist disagrees. No matter how much McConnell reveres Senate tradition, he will not let such a qualified jurist, and Trump’s first Court nominee, go down to ignominious defeat. If push comes to shove, I predict that McConnell will invoke the nuclear option, and Gorsuch will be confirmed on a simple-majority vote.

For a lawyer's view on Gorsuch, read this SCOTUSblog profile on Gorsuch. Some of his key legal positions are below

* Second Amendment: He wrote in United States v. Games-Perez these rights "may not be infringed lightly."

* Roe v. Wade: Gorsuch has never had the opportunity to write on Roe v. Wade. But, for any indication on how he would vote on abortions, the "right to privacy" defense from the dormant commerce clause is relevant, and he isn't buying it. This clause, known as "dormant" since it is not explicitly written out in the Constitution, indicates that since Congress regulates interstate commerce, states cannot pass legislation that unduly burdens or discriminates against other states and interstate commerce.

* Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius: He distrusts efforts to remove religious expression from public spaces generally, but watch out for cases citing RFRA and RLUIPA — he ruled in Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius that the contraception mandate in Obamacare placed an undue burden on the company's religious exercise and violated RFRA.

* Capital punishment: Gorsuch is not friendly to requests for relief from death sentences through federal habeas corpus.

* Criminal law: Gorsuch believes there is an overwhelming amount of legislation about criminal law, and believes that cases can be interpreted in favor of defendants even if it hurts the government. On mens rea — which means "guilty mind," or essentially the intent to commit a crime — Gorsuch is willing to read narrowly even if it means it doesn't favor the prosecution.

* Checks and balances: Gorsuch does not like deferring to federal agencies when they interpret laws, so watch out for use of the Chevron rule, which allows federal agents to enforce laws in any way that is not expressly prohibited. Gorsuch may push back.
