The KGB Connections:
An Investigation Into Soviet Operations in North America

2:10:54
Published on Dec 9, 2012

This documentary focuses on Soviet espionage in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean - by KGB officers operating as businessmen, diplomats, and officials of the United Nations. It shows the use of propaganda and disinformation to distort America's perception of reality. Also shown is the use of blackmail, bribery, sabotage, and assassination to accomplish Soviet objectives within larger nations. Included is the testimony of twenty defectors, some speaking with disguises to conceal their identity because they are still hiding from their pasts and fearful of the KGB's revenge.

I stumbled across "The KGB Connections..." on Netflix Amazon Prime.   All the more poignant because we just finished watching season two of The Americans which is set in this era.  This woman, the KGB's most successful recruiter, may well be the model for "Claudia."  The KGB's base in the United States?  The U.N., where more than 500 KGB agents were (and are) allowed to run amok.  Give it a look.

Salmon

                                                           FOOD

Herb Encrusted Salmon

We had a luncheon guest Friday who doesn't ...
  • drink alcohol
  • eat meat on Friday
  • eat shellfish
I have an extensive list of Test Kitchen videos saved on DVR, so I perused them for fish recipes.  The first three I came across were for salmon, a fish I'm not terribly fond of because .. well, I'm just not.  However, this Herb-Crusted Salmon (there were two) looked properly good, so I trotted off to the fish monger and took pains to get a center cut Atlantic Salmon that passed muster.  Two pounds (over-kill) skinned and boned cost $34.  This turned out to be the 2nd best fish I have ever had—the first was poached bass at some hole-in-the-wall French restaurant in Manhattan 30 yers ago.  Here's how good it is.  Both MoSup and guest said holy crap at first bite.  I was even more impressed, and had a leftover slab for dinner and some other leftovers for breakfast yesterday.  Most importantly; I used fresh thyme and tarragon, instead of the usual dried stuff, and it made a huge difference.

There was another upside: the Panko crust recipe.  I've used Panko for several years and swear by it, however; I usually just put it on top of, say baked chicken breasts, topped with a pat of butter.   Last night we had chicken breasts and I used a variation of the salmon recipe for the Panko.  Perfectly crunchy.

You're welcome.  Here's the video (if it works without a subscription)

For the fillets to cook at the same rate, they must be the same size and shape. To ensure uniformity, we prefer to purchase a 1 1/2- to 2-pound center-cut salmon fillet and cut it into four pieces. Dill or basil can be substituted for tarragon.

INGREDIENTS

  • Salt and pepper
  • 4(6- to 8-ounce) skin-on salmon fillets
  • 2tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2cup panko bread crumbs
  • 2tablespoons beaten egg
  • 2teaspoons minced fresh thyme
  • 1/4cup chopped fresh tarragon
  • 1tablespoon whole-grain mustard
  • 1 1/2teaspoons mayonnaise
  • Lemon wedges

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. 1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Dissolve 5 tablespoons salt in 2 quarts water in large container. Submerge salmon in brine and let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. Remove salmon from brine, pat dry, and set aside.

    2. Meanwhile, melt butter in 10-inch skillet over medium heat. Add panko and 1/8 teaspoon salt and season with pepper; cook, stirring frequently, until panko is golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to bowl and let cool completely. Stir in egg and thyme until thoroughly combined. Stir tarragon, mustard, and mayonnaise together in second bowl.

    3. Set wire rack in rimmed baking sheet. Place 12 by 8-inch piece of aluminum foil on wire rack and lightly coat with vegetable oil spray. Evenly space fillets, skin side down, on foil. Using spoon, spread tarragon mixture evenly over top of each fillet. Sprinkle panko mixture evenly over top of each fillet, pressing with your fingers to adhere. Bake until center of thickest part of fillets reaches 125 (I did 122º) degrees and is still translucent when cut into with paring knife, 18 to 25 minutes. Transfer salmon to serving platter and let rest for 5 minutes before serving with lemon wedges.

SAVE US FROM PAUL RYAN AND THE KEMP BOYS

After Paul Ryan helped Mitt Romney lose the 2012 election by doing the impossible -- losing a debate to Joe Biden -- he went on an intimate tour of poverty. It was a journey so personal, Ryan brought reporters, writers and documentary producers with him.

Two years ago, Ryan bragged to a Catholic radio station: "I actually campaigned with Jack Kemp against a thing called Prop 187." That "thing" was an overwhelmingly popular initiative to prevent illegal aliens from collecting government benefits. It gave Republicans their biggest victory in California in the last 30 years, was supported by a majority of blacks, a majority of whites, a majority of Asians and 31 percent of Hispanics. Two years later, the Dole-Kemp ticket got only 21 percent of the Hispanic vote. That's worse than Romney!
So far, he's gotten one book and one documentary out of The Paul Ryan Intimate Poverty Tour -- we're still waiting for the tote bags -- and is currently promoting a major poverty-fighting initiative that he brainstormed during private moments of reflection, somehow captured by the press: "The Kemp Forum on Expanding Opportunity."

Appropriately for an event named after Ryan's mentor, Jack Kemp, the forum will allow Ryan to showcase his deep concern for the poor without doing a thing to help them. This is the hallmark of the "empowerment" crowd. What matters is their own self-regard and favorable press notices, not accomplishing anything useful.

In the 1996 vice presidential debate, Al Gore repeatedly praised Kemp for not being a racist -- unlike the rest of his party. After Gore called Kemp a "lonely voice" in the GOP, "who says we ought to be one nation," Kemp did not say:

MY PARTY? YOUR PARTY HAS A FORMER KLAN MEMBER IN THE SENATE! YOUR FATHER VOTED AGAINST THE 1964 CIVIL RIGHTS ACT! YOUR PARTY DESTROYED THE BLACK FAMILY!

No, Kemp's response was: "Well, I thank you, Al. I mean that very, very sincerely."

FLT 800, et al

      WHAT THIS GUMMINT DOES

As previously mentioned, I find Smithsonian's "Air Disasters" series compelling. Very.  I just watched VANISHED.  An Airbus A330, traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, vanished somewhere over the Atlantic. After two years of scouring the ocean floor they finally recover the two black boxes and discover the reason.

Ice crystals temporarily clogged the device that measures air speed.  A common occurrence that will self correct in about a minute if level flight is maintained.  However, the Auto Pilot is automatically disengaged with an audible warning,  What happened was that the experienced head plilot had taken a sleep brake, leaving two "2nd officers" in charge.  When the alarm sounded, one pulled back on the yoke to gain altitude which, in the rarefied air at 35,000 feet put the plane into a stall.  Duh. The pilots, instead of nosing down to gain airspeed and lift,  kept it nose high while it fell 13,000 ft/min, kerplunk.  The reason?   Air France pilots had grown so used to the Auto Pilot that they had not been trained on manual flight in this event.  I am not making this up.

Another reason I so love this series is that every episode is solved using using data.  Blame is put without fear of embarrassing any person, company, or manufacturer. And guess what?  So far not a single crash investigation has been performed by the FBI, with the final report produced by the CIA!

So I checked.  Sigh.  TWA 800, has so far been ignored.

How about cakes for gay muslums?

“Special Privilege” Muslim Truck Drivers Win Lawsuit After Refusing To Deliver “Demon Alcohol,” Do Their Jobs

Over-the-road company truck drivers aren’t generally allowed to select their loads by any national carrier. They are sent a dispatch, expected to accept it and go pick it up. That’s the understanding when you’re hired, the rules the industry operates under and what is expected of employees. If more consistency in runs or commodity type is needed, local delivery jobs, cement, produce, building materials or the like, perhaps beer or soda, offer an alternative.
That’s the system unless you’re an entitled, argumentative, self-aggrandized Muslim transplant from Somalia; then things are different. You expect the world to adjust to your whims, for employers to craft their company procedures around your particular demands, and file a lawsuit if they don’t.
Back in 2009, a national over-the-road trucking company, Star Transport, who had the misfortune of having two Somali “religious liberty” jihadists under their employ, issued such a dispatch which included delivering alcohol and expected transported. They have since learned a valuable lesson, don’t hire Muslims or if you do, pucker up; expect to cater to their every whim.
On Thursday a federal jury in Peoria, Ill awarded $240,000 to the demanding “drivers,” Mahad Abass Mohamed and Abdkiarim Hassan Bulshale, composed of $20,000 each in compensatory damages and $100,000 each in punitive damages. The Obama-appointed judge, James E. Shadid, also handed over another $1,500 to each in back pay, somehow earned by refusing to deliver their loads.
The case was brought by the haters of white Americans at Obama’s BLM, La Raza, CAIR front and agitation organization, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The trial began on October 19th and was wrapped up the following day.

The basis for the claim is a supposed religious violation that was argued would have existed had the Muslims come into contact with alcohol, a commodity very common in over-the-road driving. It’s actually a preferred load for some, depending upon the situation and individuals, but they generally don’t get to demand “beer only” assignments either.

I saw that video on the Smithsonian Channel and freaked.  It's the first time I've ever seen footage about the Army Primary Helicopter school in Mineral Wells, TX.  Larry Lis,  trying to hover, is me!  As previously chronicled, it only took me about 6 hours to master that art, but then, Larry made it through while I wound up in Army Optical School in Aurora Co**.

One more thing.  I'd never ever heard about this extraction of 100 ARVN that required pilots to use their rotors to cut down stands of bamboo in order to make the pick ups.  Wow.  Really a thrilling story, even for girls.
And this memory.

** Larry's "solo gambit" would not been tolerated in 1963 when the attrition rate was 80%, plus*.

Penn State Shakes

  Rivalry and Ribaldry

TOP TEN REASONS

Top 10 reasons we didn’t shake hands with PSU last year
10. Coach said "smack’em in the mouth" nothing about shaking hands.
9. We thought they had their hands out for $money$ to help pay their $60 million fine.
8. With that whole E-bola thing we couldn’t be too careful.
7. We had already met minutes earlier when they ran thru our pre-game warm-ups, so no further
introductions were needed.
6. PSU’s #14 had rosey cheeks, watery eyes, and looked sick, and he looked sicker after the game started.
5. UA founder & MD alum Kevin Plank said "Don’t get any of that Nike* crap on our great looking UA uniforms".
4. In that part of Pennsylvania, it starts with a handshake, then its a hug, then its a kiss, and then…well you know.
3. We heard they had played with some "useless nuts"(tOSU) and almost beat’em the week before.
2. We ran out of hand sanitizer in the locker room.
1. They looked like DOOK!

In my freshman year I watched the Terps beat Penn State for the first time.  It would be the last time until last year.  I hate Penn State, in the football sense.  Today, the rematch at home.  There is a reason why Randy Edsall was fired after their loss at Michigan.   The Terps will shake hands with the bastids this time and lose  35-18.  We will kill them next year.  Book it.
