A Republic, not a Democracy You Bleeding Nincompoops The creation of the Electoral College was certainly part political pragmatism. The proponents of the proposed Constitution wanted a way to reassure skeptical states that their voices would be preserved in a system with a strong federal government. Having states, not the nation as a whole, choose the president was a reassurance. But it was also philosophical, as the Federalists were eager to avoid rule of the mob and demagoguery. As resentful as they were of the aloof tyranny of George III and the British nobility, the American patriots were, if anything, more alarmed by the prospect of the tyranny of the masses. Remember, Russia is a democracy. Iran is a democracy. America is a republic. As Hillary Clinton’s lead in the popular vote stretches out to 1.5 points and may grow more with ballots still being counted in California, the sour grapes caucus in the Democratic Party is getting louder. This is the fourth time in history that Democrats have won the popular vote but lost in the Electoral College. And this one is shaping up to be the widest discrepancy since 1876 when just one elector and the threat of renewed civil war stood between Republican Rutherford Hayes and Democrat Samuel Tilden. What’s that you say? The Electoral College is undemocratic? Well, yeah. That’s the point. Pressure is growing on members of the Electoral College to refuse to vote for the winners of their states. Given Donald Trump’s 74-vote lead in the Electoral College based on state returns, the effort seems to be a symbolic one at best. More tantalizing for Democrats though, is the claim from “top computer scientists” that they see evidence of electronic ballot rigging in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The fact that the experts made their case to the remnants of Clinton’s campaign that she dispute the official election results has allowed some embittered supporters of Clinton to remain in denial about the actual result. But as data dervish Nate Silver explained Tuesday night on Twitter, the computer guys might have benefitted from some practical knowledge of politics. The claims don’t bear even modest scrutiny once you take into account the composition of the counties in question. Part of the problem here, of course, is that many Democrats believed their nominee’s campaign rhetoric that Trump’s election would bring about the apocalypse. Here, some Democrats have fallen into the same trap that led Republicans, including the now president-elect, to search for conspiracy theories and loopholes to invalidate the Obama presidency all the way through his first term.* It’s sick stuff. Putting aside wide-spread (documented) charges of voter fraud, perped by ACORN, NAACP,  and SEIU, to name a few, there were (and are still) legitimate questions about Obama's eligibility, radical background, education, and charges of political  racketeering.  Trump "deniers" are just sore losers.

I also have another Dungeons and Dragons, rules for fantastic medievel wargames campaigns, playable with paper and pencil and miniature figures, 3 volume set, from TSR.  Written by Gygax and Arneson.  I've had this for 40 years!  No, it isn't a computer game, but rules.  I once knew Gary Gygax. Preet Bharara, Save Us

NY Governor’s top aides indicted on sweeping corruption charges. There are more shady deals described in these charges than you can shake a stick at, but one of the biggest is Cuomo’s “Buffalo Billion” initiative, which Bharara described as little more than, “a cash cow for friends of the administration” who funneled money into the governor’s campaign war chest. Cuomo himself has somehow managed to avoid indictment thus far and still insists that he was utterly oblivious to any nefarious dealings allegedly going on in his administration. Pull the other one, Governor. It’s got bells on it. As a side note, I find it interesting that when aides to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are charged or convicted on something related to Bridgegate it consumes the news cycle for days on end. When the same thing happens to Andrew Cuomo it’s apparently a “local news story.” Funny how that works, eh? We’ve discussed U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara here many times in the past. His pursuit of government corruption wherever it may be found and the prosecution of those who betray the trust of the public has become legendary. That’s why, when he told reporters earlier this year that he detected an “air of corruption” in the executive branch of New York’s state government people were rightly looking over their shoulders. Now his work in that area is moving into high gear. Bharara has made his case to a grand jury and been given the green light to take eight top aides and associates of Governor Andrew Cuomo to trial on charges of corruption. (New York Observer) CUTTING TO THE CHASE  The Hillary Clinton Connection Preet Bharara is the honey badger of corruption investigations and he is not afraid to do his job. There’s one last thing to consider which you’re going to want to keep your eye on. This investigation has been going on for well over a year without making very many headlines. That’s not how Bharara operates. His rare media statements are short and businesslike. But he promised action on this and after the long and challenging investigation was complete he delivered. Remember that Preet owes no loyalty to either party and is absolutely relentless. When he detected corruption in the state legislature in 2014, he launched a lengthy investigation which resulted in former Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver – arguably the most powerful Democrat in the state – being sent to prison. He followed that up by sending the state’s senior Republican to keep him company behind bars. Bharara is the guy who is currently going after Anthony Weiner… an investigation which produced all sorts of interesting information. And in August he announced that he was investigating corruption at the New York offices of the Clinton Foundation. As I said at the time, this isn’t the sort of investigation which was going to be wrapped up in a matter of weeks. These things take time. The FBI may have thrown in the towel on going after Hillary Clinton. Even Donald Trump may be making noises about not needing to “lock her up.” But out there in New York City Preet Bharara is still grinding away at his job. And if he has the Clintons in his sights, don’t expect him to simply go away because the election is over. Preet Bharara is the honey badger of corruption investigations and he is not afraid to do his job. [FULL] More reason why Trump's declaration that he would not be investigating Hillary's emails was not the betrayal I first suspected.  If Preet Bharara doesn't get the Clintons, the U.S. AG will have them by their Clinton Foundation balls.

Dan Rather Melts Down at Fear Trump Is Endangering Founding Principles; Urges Press to Rise Up (What the hell does he think they've be doing?) Disgraced former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather was at it again on Tuesday pontificating on Facebook  as he urged Americans and particularly journalists to rise up and not “remain seated or silent” against concerning aspects of President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda and neo-Nazis saluting Trump’s win (in another attempt to normalize their line of hate through free media). Speaking as if we were on the edge of a massive purge or tragedy, Rather pontificated that “HIstory [sic] will demand to know which side were you on” because “[t]his is not a question of politics or party or even policy” but “a question about the very fundamentals of our beautiful experiment in a pluralistic democracy ruled by law.” [...] Perhaps the most eye-rolling moment was when the man who conjured up and touted the false story about then-President George W. Bush oozed that, using the Declaration of Independence as a guide, “[t]hese truths may be self-evident but they are not self-replicating” because “[e]ach generation has to renew these vows.” He continued with references to freedom of the press (which he abused and thus lost his job) and comparing this moment in American history to our most tenuous moments: [FULL] Edward R Murrow created the "Cozy Communist" CBS culture ... Leading to Walter Cronkite's reign of disinfo ... before hiring  as his replacement Dan Rather, CBS's White House correspondent who made his bones by insulting President Nixon on live television.  Whereas the first two were adept at hiding behind a facade of "patriotism," Rather was, from the beginning, a pusillanimous lick-spittle and leftist liar. TOP GEAR AGAIN!

TOP GEAR It's BACK! As you may know, Amazon stepped in to rescue the lads after Jeremy, rather boorishly, punched a cheeky BBC producer, and was fired. I had pretty much stopped watching it anyway, because it had become a self parody.  The early shows, however, had so captured my soul that I watched the whole series (Netflix) something like eight times. And would still if the BBC hadn't yanked the first dozen, or so, series off the air.  I looked to see if I could buy them,without luck.  But, I digress. Amazon signed the boys up to do a Top Gear-ish series called "The Great Adventure."  From early clips I've seen ... not interested. But, as part of the package, Amazon offers the entire Top Gear shmeer.  Even some "Series 1, " that nobody on earth, evidently, had ever seen.  Here are some some of the steps that began to annoy the crap out of me, and a few winners. Look for the lead-in shown above (aircraft hanger).  A sign of quality. The very first time you hear the "Stig" intro begin "Some say he ....;" you have entered the beginning of crap zone. Early episodes showed edited clips of celebrities driving the "reasonably priced car." When they somehow thought is would be fun to see the whole 2 minutes, or so, the shtick drifted into yawner.  The celebrity interviews were pretty much jewels, every one. Watch them all. After a fashion, the audience grew from an intimate gathering of gear heads and their often lovely girl friends (that Jeremy would hit on),  to something akin to a Super Bowl crowd.  The producers did however round up the best lookers, and use them as front row scenery. The "NEWS" segment was, IMO, the best feature, but eventually scrapped. Sigh. The COOL WALL.  Pffft.

Will conservatives in the GOP stand up to Trump? Donald Trump is notable among recent Republican presidential nominees in his talent for alienating conservatives. Those who disowned him during the campaign include three former chairmen of the Republican National Committee, House members Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Justin Amash of Michigan, and commentators George Will, Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol. It's safe to say that four years ago, none of them could have imagined refusing to vote for the 2016 GOP presidential nominee. Trump violated their sense of what the Republican Party represents, and they and many other people on the right couldn't accept him at the top of the ticket. I don't mean in theory; I mean in practice.  Since Reagan, (and even then, the GOP establishment tempered him with good old boy George Bush) the GOP, as a lot, have behaved like self serving Quislings who can't find a principle they're not willing sacrifice. What I call the GOP wing of the Democrat Party.  Will examples as much. When President George W. Bush proposed to add prescription drug coverage to Medicare — the biggest new federal entitlement since the 1960s — the House Republican leadership did everything it could to push its members into line, and they got it passed. Bye the By, I long ago scissored my GOP membership card; voting for them, for the most part, as the better of two evils.  I don't know what Will thinks the GOP represent, and I don't think he does ether. That Democrats are so fearful of Donald Trump that even now "Academics push Clinton to seek recount" means he is at least on the right track.

This is what I got (using G-Mail) And, for those offering advice on "I'm  MAD AS HELL!," re: Windows 10 refusing to recognize Irfan View's search program (Did I mention that?  Whoops.  No, I did not). But ... "Sideload Apps" and "Developer" had nothing! And,  Win MS have stripped away the "Open with..." option; And will not let me select a Irfan Vu option. And, I had previously reloaded the latest Irfan Vu package, and it worked ... for a short while.  And then it didn't.  Another reinstall wouldn't let me "search" at all.  And...I'm way past caring enought to grapple with using UNIX, or any other alternative.  MFCS!

The Pope What? Just saw this Drudge item.   Pope grants all priests power to forgive abortion... Here's the deal.  R.C.  priests have, from day one, the power to forgive a penitent sinner of any and all confessed sin.  More to the point, in this case, if you're  not Catholic, who cares?  I have no interest in keeping up with pronouncements by, say, the Methodist Council of Bishops, because I'm not Methodist.  Nor would they be particularly interested in what Pope Francis has to say.  Oui?   So why do  the leftist secular press pay so much attention to this Pope's utterances?* Simple. If I'm a rat bastard abortion (the Left's holy sacrament) activist, I'm terrified that President Trump will make good his promise to defund Planned Parenthood.   So, using their peculiar calculus, Pope Francis can be made to look like he's saying, hey, this is okay. Oh.
