Three on a match

Three on a Match

"... that's great for you and me"
Res Ipsa Loquitor

Annette Funicello:
was the Olsen Twins or Emma Watson of my generation.  The Mousketeer that every pre (and post) pubescent boy was in love with.   CNN says she "embodied an all-American ideal of wholesome, perky, spunky mid-'60s sexuality."  Especially the spunky part.  There was no mystery about why we loved her; we kids discussed it daily.  She had the best, (and with Darlene, only) Mouske-knockers.

Once when Annette was in Baltimore for something or other, when I was 15, I screwed up all my courage and called the hotel she was staying at according to the newspaper.  I wanted to have a date with her.  I figured that she might accept because it would be good publicity to be seen with common boy, and then would of course fall in love with me.  The hotel said there was no Annette Funicello registered there, by way of a put-out.  Too bad, I could have been her Spin Evans, the only guy good enough for her, by our vote. Frankie Avalon was a douche. .

Anyway, she hung in there one hell of a long time for someone with MS. There was never any scandal in her life, and despite having been married twice and having three children, Annette died a virgin. RIP.

"The Lady's not for turning"
Mrs Thatcher.  When the Democrat mantra was "Republicans  are afraid of strong women, we had the  Mrs. Thatcher and Jeane Kirkpatrick. rejoinder:

"You fools. We're not afraid of strong women. We're afraid of incompetent  nincompoops like Geraldine Ferraro and  Patricia Schroeder!"

And it was true.  On his Top Gear Race from London to Oslo, Jeremy Clarkson had with him, in order to keep him alert,  a CD of  her greatest speeches.  Oddly, I have heard most of them from watching C-Span's House of Commons Q&A.  That's how much I thought of her,

ROGER EBERT

Did Not Win a Golden Globe

I used to like watching "At The Movies" with Siskel and Ebert.   Every year I bought "Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook" as stocking stuffer  for friends who enjoyed the cinema.  Watching  "If We Picked The Winners" pre Oscar show was an event (here's one from 1989).

Around 1992 (it seems) the blush went off the Ebert rose for me.  It seemed to me that he had taken to considering whether a film professed proper social (political) values  in his revues. After Gene Siskel died (the better of the two in my opinion) Ebert went off the rails completely. When in 2006 he gave his imprimatur to a film based on President Bush's  assassination,  I responded with my own film.

 I stand by it.

Company Pork

Guest Food
Res Ipsa Loquitor

We had the wife's family here for the past four days.  While working up the menus I decided to step up the coffee for them,  and bought a 12 ounce bag of Seattle's Finest because it was, at $9.79,  the cheapest premium blend Giant carried..

God help me. I'm not a coffee snob, and we've been happy with Wal-Mart coffee—I buy it by the case, home delivered—but that there Seattle coffee is so noticeably better that I can't go home again.  The good news is that WalMart sells it for $6 the bag delivered.  I ordered 6 bags (and some paper towels) so there was no tax or freight.  What the hell,  we only use one ounce of coffee a day (8 cups), so one bag will last—let's call it two weeks—so six bags will last—lets call it 3 months.  Just 40¢ a day.  Piece of cake.

On the topic of guest food, I made spare ribs Saturday.  Remember that oven pulled pork recipe?  Well I prepared my 4 slabs of ribs the same exact way.  Brined, slathered, rubbed and baked in foil sealed pans.  The only concession I made for the lighter mass was to bake @ 275° for about 45 minutes, then @300° for about 45 minutes, and then 325° for one hour.  But wait!  When I took the foil off and tasted the sauce all I could taste was pepper!  WTF?  Maye I screwed up the dry rub?  I rubbed a handful of brown sugar on each slab and let them crust up for an hour at 275° (while watching to make sure the sugar didn't burn).  For about the last 10 minutes I turned the heat up to 500°.

I anticipated that the whole lot would be a bust, but no!  In fact, they were hands-down the best ribs I've ever made, maybe ever had!-and that was the table's  consensus too. I mean, perfect.  Not quite falling off the bone, and firm enough that when you bit into them the bite mark remained. A sign of perfection.

FWIW, I also made this recipe  for pork and bean.  Result was much better than I anticipated.  Quite wonderful in fact,  despite using only about 12 ounces of  pork roast that I had in the freezer.

Damn I miss Saturday Terp  basketball.

Raja,

If you were wondering if there is a “legitimate” reason to visit the Soylent Siberia website, the chart below is such a reason.  I saw this chart in its small version, then clicked to embiggenify, and found the diagram below.  Talk about damning evidence of the relationship between government and the “green energy” industry.  He got it from Hauntingthelibrary: (Note, if Soylent Siberia has this posted it's well hidden amongst the plethora of featured Labia majora et minora pudendi-a place where the most intrepid explorer will have trouble navigating. Ahem. )

Arrest James Hansen

GREEN CRAP

"We Stand By It as a Theatrical Work"

James Hansen, Al Gore's NASA Climate Whore
“ Raja,

Hansen is about to retire, then sue the government for lack of effort in policing industry over man’s effect on climate.  The article calls this ironic, but it’s just the opposite.  Hansen has been pushing the climate change/global warming hoax from within the government.  Now he’ll pursue the hoax for fraudulent gain from the outside.

Res Ipsa LoquitorMaybe he and his fellow zoot suiters will gain a major victory from the government.  Under Obama, the EPA and DOE have been laying down for environmental group suits for years.

The one good that may come of this is that when a non-communist finally becomes president, as eventually one must, there will be NASA people who will point out the confederates of Hansen and his ilk.  We may hope the same happens within EPA and DOE.

Skoonj

Indeed, in 2007 Hansen faced open revolt by NASA colleagues who disagreed with his climate idiocy. Nobody has done more to expose Hansen than Anthony Watt (Watts Up With That?).   If Hansen does sue the gummint "for ;lack of effort," I would be willing to join in a counter-suit charging Hansen with taking bribes from Al Gore and George Soros to advance the AGW fraud for the purpose of allowing Democrats to overthrow (defacto) the US Constitution, specifically the Fifth Amendment, and more seriously (treason) laying the groundwork for giving the UN dominion over us.  Actually, that suit ought be  fought in federal criminal court where Hansen, Mr. Hockey Stick, and other Goreons could receive the death penalty.  It's what George Washington would want.

Mini Engines

TECHNO THRILLS

minis

“ Res Ipsa Loquitor Scientists have created the smallest petrol engine in the world ( less than a centimeter long not even half an inch ), small enough to power a watch or any small gadget.
  • The mini-motor, which runs for two years on a single squirt of lighter fuel, is set to revolutionize world technology.
  • It generates 700 times more energy than a conventional battery. It could be used to operate laptops and mobile phones for months doing away  with the need for charging.
  • Experts believe it could be phasing out batteries in such items within just six years.
  • The engine, minute enough to be balanced on a fingertip, has been produced by engineers at the University of Birmingham
  • Al Gore cries havoc! and says he's committed to eliminating the threat posed by this internal combustion engine"

Current events lead me to speculate on how the state will use this technology to further intrude on our privacy.  Ironic isn't it, that the party of abortion rests its argument on the "right to privacy," and only in that one instance?

Here's more examples of  V8 and V12 Engines in Miniature

ME AND LEROY

Fred was watching  a couple of men working along the roadside. One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on.

The other man came along behind him and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole, the other was 25 feet behind filling in the hole.

The men worked right past Fred and went on down the road. "I can't stand this,"mumbled Fred,  and headed down the road toward the men.

"Hold it, hold it," he called to the men. "Can you tell me what's going on here with all this digging and refilling?"

"Well, we work for the city and we're just doing our job," one of the men said.

"But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. You're not accomplishing anything. Aren't you wasting the taxpayers' money?"

"You don't understand, mister," one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. "Normally there's three of us: me, Elmer and Leroy. I dig the hole, Elmer sticks in the tree, and Leroy here puts the dirt back.

Elmer's job's been cut... so now it's just me an' Leroy.

She Gets It

Tails of the Gun

Ooh, you come out of a dream,
Peaches and cream,
Mind much better than mine,
You're fifteen,
You're beautiful, and you're just too precious for words.

“

This fifteen year old absolutely gets it!

She crushes the logic of anti gun politicians in the Maryland state legislature.

If only our politicians were as smart as this fifteen year old girl we might actually be taking steps to reduce violence that DON’T include attacking inanimate objects.

She points out the fallacy of strict gun control by using the model of modern gun control, Chicago, as an example of what happens when you disarm the general populace, leaving them at the hands of criminals and gang members.

Bravo young lady, bravo. We know it takes some nerves to stand up in a crowd like that and speak your mind..

I love it!  But then the cynical me begins to leak out the cracks.  These people don't care about facts; they care about winning.
