6 thin- erm, 9 things

                bits & pieces

Six Conundrums
  • 1. America is called capitalist and greedy – but half the population is subsidized
  •  2. Half the population are subsidized – but they consider themselves victims
  •  3. They believe they are being victimized – but their representatives in Congress run the government
  • 4. Representatives in Congress run the government – yet the poor keep getting poorer
  • 5. The poor keep getting poorer – but they have things that people in many other countries can only dream about
  • 6. They have things that people in other countries can only dream about – yet they want the US to be more like those other countries So who’s doing the freakin math here!
And a couple more things:
  • 1. We’re cautioned NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we’re encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.
  • 2. We’re regularly warned that Social Security is running out of money. But Welfare and Food Stamps seem to be a bottomless pit of money.
  • 3. We’re cutting benefits for veterans and raises for military. We’re downsizing our army and naval forces to levels lower than before WWII. BUT . . . we’re not stopping payments or benefits to illegal aliens. Who the hell is in charge here!!
Reginald Van Metzger

Ron M spent some time on this, but as I format it I'm thinking, hey!,  by now everybody in the nation who possess even a modicum of reasoning skill already know and understand all this.  The people who don't,  and have to be led to water wouldn't be caught dead here.  So, WTF?

It's a Two-Way Tie!

Who's—                    ?

Thomas Friedman

“Until we fully understand what turned two brothers who allegedly perpetrated the Boston Marathon bombings into murderers, it is hard to make any policy recommendation other than this: We need to redouble our efforts to make America stronger and healthier so it remains a vibrant counterexample to whatever bigoted ideology may have gripped these young men....And the best place to start is with a carbon tax.”

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, April 21.

Ed Schultz

“This is the Web site folks, HealthCare.gov. If you go to this Web site, you will find out how easy it is to read, how easy it is to navigate all the information, all the basic questions, and all the direction you need to take to get involved, to get health care. This is a great guide, if I may say, for any of you out there who feel so confused by all of these right-wing commercials that are just permeating through your television screen.”

Chicago Announces Illegal Alien Children Given Preference in Jobs, Internships

In a preview of what amnesty holds in store for the rest of America’s middle class and lower income workers, Chicago is putting illegal immigrants in the job pool ahead of many citizen students who would also like to have the opportunity.

“DREAMers and DACA recipients are assets that we need to nurture and develop like precious natural resources for the benefit of the entire community. They are an integral part of Chicago’s workforce of tomorrow. Once again, the City of Chicago and Mayor Rahm Emanuel are leading the way on the inclusion of our immigrant communities.” - Luis Gutierrez (D-IL)
In much the same way they or their parents were rewarded for violating American immigration law and given preference over those who lined up to immigrate legally, Chicago is offering internships, volunteer and job opportunities to illegal alien “dreamers.”

In “justifying” the discrimination against American citizens, Mayor Emanuel said, “Chicago is a city that was built by immigrants and I am committed to ensuring that DREAMers have the same opportunities offered by the City to all of Chicago’s youth. We will open our doors to support talented young people who are committed to their education, building their job skills, and bettering their communities.”

Musings of the Ugsome Tina Brown

Hoes in the Outfield
Monica’s new musings just remind us of how the death of privacy started. The press was at the height of its power when the Monica story began and Drudge was its underbelly.

The ascendant media that looked down on him has been pretty much destroyed. No one would have believed that that only 13 years later the Graham family would no longer own The Washington Post, that the two mighty news magazines would become a shadow and a corpse, and that the juggernaut CNN would be chasing the spoils won by cable TV’s counterpart to the Drudge Report, the Fox News Network. That too, is a story of humiliation. And not just hers.

Today's Obituary of Note

O

William Baur

bituary

BAUR, WILLIAM HAROLD passed away quietly on May 5, 2014. He lived quietly as well, unless you happened to mention global warming and climate change. He would then patiently explain to you that abundant evidence exists of even warmer global temperatures in recent geological history without the corresponding carbon imprint left by man.

He spent a lifetime reading and learning, always to the backdrop of classical music and opera. Most of all, he was a truly free thinker, with his own carefully reasoned opinions no matter what everyone else chose to think. He loved frappuccinos; he scorned community associations. He was never wrong, or at least not so that he would admit. He ate ice cream every day. He was a true renaissance man in the modern world he could read dozens of books about computers without the need to ever turn one on. Educated as a physicist, he spent his free time building and sailing multihulls. In fact, he could build most anything. His humor, on the other hand, could be a bit obscure. He was a great artist and sculptor, creating works of exquisite beauty that few have been lucky to see.

He was an inspiration, precisely because he never tried to inspire anyone. William Baur was born in 1932 in Michigan. He is survived by....

Should we ever fear FLIR?

A citizen of Nazi Germany or Communist Russia could never discuss such matters for fear of being investigated by the state police.  Good thing we live in the United States, right?  Where government drones are not used for spying on the citizenry.  Still, better to be educated about things, right?  Like Robert A. Heinlein said.

Ryobi Pressure Washer

Waterdown, ON
Best pressure washer under $200 I've seen
June 15, 2013
5.0
5 out of 5

After going through 2 Karchers in the last two years, and reading the reviews on all the other under $200 Pressure washers available at the major retailers, that all look like the came from the same factory in China, I decided to give this Ryobi a try.
Pretty impressive machine so far. And cheap considering what you get, very good quality parts and well engineered, very close to a good commercial gas powered machine.
I like that it comes with 3 nozzles, and everything has a place on this machine. An actual detergent tank rather than some cheap plastic tube.
The all-aluminum pump sold it for me, I hope it lasts longer than what I've experienced with others that have the plastic pumps, that ... Read More

I bought this Ryobi because this guy's review is identical to what I would write.  Same experience, but add along the way two of those blue machines that are even crappier than Karcher.  Don't ask.  Anyway, I wish this was an American product because it's fit, finish, and engineering are the best of anything I've purchased since, I don't know—the Oxo mandolin I suppose.  Zero water leaks.  The sound of the spray is louder than the sound of the pump.  Metal frame.  Brass fittings. QUALITY!  Even if you don't have a use for a pressure washer, get this Ryobi for the pure joy of owning something that's virtually flawless.  Free shipping from Home Depot.

Professor Otis Madison: Enemy of the United States

Santa Barbara Prof Warns Ted Cruz-Teabaggers To Leave Class Or Go Home In Body Bag

Alice Gilbert can vividly recall her first day of class last fall in a black studies course called “The Obama Phenomenon” offered by Professor Otis Madison at UC Santa Barbara.

That’s because before his introductory lecture was over, the scholar “warned Ted Cruz-supporting ‘teabaggers’ to get the hell out of his classroom before he sent them home to their mother in a body bag,” Gilbert said in an email interview with The College Fix.

“The comment is from memory, however there were other students with me in the class who can attest to them,” Gilbert said. “When Professor Madison made his comments in the very first lecture, I was taken aback and offended.”

Gilbert said as a conservative student, she enrolled in the course to broaden her horizons and learn about the president from a perspective other than what she is normally exposed to, but dropped it after Madison’s remarks.

She never complained to administrators.

“He did not target me by name, so I did not feel that there was a lot the school could do based on a student just being offended by something said in class,” said Gilbert, a junior and statewide College Republican student leader.

Gilbert is telling her story now as part of the new social media campaign #MyLiberalCampus, in which students post anecdotal evidence describing when their conservative beliefs have been disregarded or denigrated by professors or peers.

The effort, launched by the College Republican National Committee, strives to highlight the discrimination and intolerance conservative students face everyday on campuses nationwide. So far, more than 350,000 people have engaged in the conversation.
