A Divided Establishment

Follow Me Men!

“

Here, citing  Leon Wolf's A Divided Establishment, For a Change
[...]
In every contested primary since 1980, the establishment has had the decided advantage of settling on a candidate early while numerous conservatives fought for the right to be the establishment’s principal opponent long past the time when the race was actually decided. This phenomenon reached its peak in 2012 when the conservative base plowed through a series of increasingly unserious challengers searching for an alternative to Mitt Romney. As a result, the establishment unsurprisingly tends to win Presidential primaries without too much serious heartburn – the sole exception to this dynamic being when Ronald Reagan spent the better part of four years herding the movement conservative cats into his camp to challenge the establishment favorite George H.W. Bush in 1980.

Most likely, it looks like conservatives are going to fall into the same inevitable trap. No one has really spent the time laying the groundwork to become a consensus conservative candidate which makes sense in light of the fact that the best possible conservative challengers are still sitting office holders. But at least in this case the playing field might potentially be leveled.

Jeb probably is the presumptive establishment favorite among the three, but Romney and Christie both have a significant pool of potential donors, political chits to cash, and enough ego to burn to make them unwilling to kiss Jeb’s ring early on in the contest, at least before he wins some actual primaries. They are, also, competing over basically the same pool of voters, as they have all [pisseed off Teapartiers] to the point that they will be unlikely to siphon votes from the crowd of conservative challengers. (full)

Now, the interlocking analysis from The Daily Caller; Why Conservatives should be ecstatic, which is right in my wheelhpose.
[...]

Bush planned to raise $100 million in the first three months of the year– an ambitious mark to achieve, and a risky one to publicize. “The former Florida governor is looking to send a message to the rest of the potential field,” Bloomberg declared in the subtitle.

“Message: Received,” may as well have been Mr. Romney’s reply, as he worked to pump the brakes on the 30 or so conflicted donors he had gathered. “Loud and clear.”

Additionally, while these two “establishment” Republicans square off, a third, the moderate Mr. Christie, seems likely to join the fray.

Imagine that, conservatives? A three-way battle for the soul of the [establishment] GOP? For its money, consultants and votes?

Good news, we think.

Because at the same time the establishment wing of the GOP if flying into disarray, the right’s presidential candidates appear more serious, and more organized, than they have been in decades. ... And on the governor level of the right, it seems more than likely that Govs. Mike Pence and ***Scott Walker*** will join the fray with an advantage in executive experience, even if they’re behind in setting up their national campaigns.

The first battle of the campaign is about to begin, conservatives. Put down the sword and grab some popcorn.

I do not mean any disrespect but I'll never understand this mentality of staying home if your candidate doesn't win. Either you honestly believe that Hillary is better than Bush, Christie, or Romney.... or you think that by staying home you are proving a point to the "establishment". Either way it seems like a self-inflicted punishment. You are proving a point to nobody and accomplishing no greater or honorable cause. Help me understand this mentality... explain your reasoning.
If it wasn't such a hassle commenting on Red State,  this is how I'd reply, and have before. (video).  Interpolate.

DEFIANCE

DEFIANCE

“

Defiance is a 2008 World War II era film written, produced, and directed by Edward Zwick, and set during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany. The film is an account of the Bielski partisans, a group led by Polish Jewish brothers who saved and recruited Jews in Belarus during the Second World War. The film stars Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski, Jamie Bell as Asael Bielski, and George MacKay as Aron Bielski. The film is an adaptation of Nechama Tec's book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans (1993).
If you liked Red Dawn (original), you'll likely love Defiance (trailer).  Great acting, and factually based.  I give it an easy .

As an aside, I coudn't help wondering, as I'm sure many of you have before, and given the abject starvation these refuges experienced, what is the actual nutritional value of seminal fluid?  As it turns out (the scant 3/4 tsp aside), it's great for wrinkles, but prolly not life sustaining. Of course (most) men would rather starve.

Four top Secret Service executives told to leave their posts in agency shake-up

What your grandparents expected would follow

The Secret Service is forcing out four of its most senior officials while two others are retiring — the biggest management shake-up at the troubled agency since its director resigned in October after a string of security lapses.

The departures will gut much of the Secret Service’s upper management, which has been criticized in recent months by lawmakers and administration officials who say it has fostered a culture of distrust between agency leaders and its rank-and-file and made poor decisions that helped erode the quality of this once elite agency.

A spokesman for the venerable service said under a condition of anonymity that institutional hatred for a man they know is not even a United States citizen has made it very difficult for anyone to commit to "taking one for the president."  She added, "I mean, these Obama people are the same that grampa gave his life fighting against in WWII!"

The Decent Ones?

Next: Newly discovered papers reveal the human side of one of history's most merciless killers: Nazi Architect Heinrich Himmler.
TNR stooge Jonathan Chait writes, somewhat counter intuitively, that History will be “Very Kind” to Obama’s legacy. This assertion comes ironically juxtaposed with the virtually universal blistering criticism Obama is receiving even from his most vociferous defenders (like Mike Lupica) for having failed to send even an administration representative (nevermind the President himself) to the anti-terror rally in Paris this weekend. It has come to the point that long time liberal defenders of Obama’s presidency are forced to concede publicly that Obama will most be remembered as a President who did essentially nothing.

Strangely, that seems to be the exact basis for Chait’s pre-emptive praise of Obama’s historical legacy – that while all others around him were clamoring for him to do something, Obama has remained steadfastly calm and done none of those things: [Continued]

There is nothing more delicious than the serendipitous discovery of two outrageous things that serve to cancel each other out.

I was agog last night to have The Decent One served up on Netflix.  The decent one is Heinrich Himmler, the Nazi who next to Hitler I should most have enjoyed throwing headfirst down a functioning outhouse privy.

Newly discovered papers reveal the human side of one of history's most merciless killers: Nazi Architect Heinrich Himmler.

The documentary uses written letters between Heinny, family, and alas mistress, to show his human side?  Is it possible the author was ignorant of the pathology of  sociopathic killers?  Hey, Hitler loved his dog.  Even the supposition—make that declaration—that Himmler was a devoted family man is destroyed when he fathers a bastard daughter with the mistress he takes because his wife has become an old barren cow.  Wait!  I haven't checked, but is it possible that Jonathan Chait authored this one too?  By the bye, watch it and make your kids and grandkids watch it too.

“
Remember those WWJD bracelets that were so popular in the ’90s? Well, an expert at the Law Library of Congress — a non-partisan branch of the Library of Congress that has advised Congress and the Supreme Court since 1832 — tackled a slightly different question: What would George III do when faced with a law he didn’t like?

Not even the King of England at the time of the American Revolution had the authority to suspend laws unilaterally, the Law Library expert wrote in a memorandum to the Senate committee tasked with responding to President Obama’s recent executive orders on the enforcement of immigration law.

“The largest untapped constituency in American politics are the 300 million American citizens who have been completely left out of the immigration debate,” Sessions writes in the memo.
One hundred years before the American Revolution, another British king had “attempted to suspend a number of laws,” contributing to the onset of the Glorious Revolution in England, a senior foreign-law specialist at the Law Library writes in the memo to the Senate Judiciary Committee. “King George III,” the specialist goes on to remind the committee, “was thus unable to enact or repeal any laws unilaterally without the involvement of Parliament.”

The memo, obtained by National Review Online, was written in response to a request by Senator Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), according to a top aide in his office. It does not address the question of whether Obama’s latest executive actions amount to a suspension of the laws, although Obama and other Democrats referred to such orders as a decision to “suspend” deportations. But it is a clear and incendiary jab at the president, just days before House and Senate Republicans are scheduled to attend a joint retreat in Pennsylvania to discuss their agenda for the 115th Congress.
At the top of the list: Deciding on a response to Obama’s decision to “suspend” deportations of millions of illegal immigrants, who will instead receive some of the benefits of legal status. The GOP regards Obama’s executive orders as a way of rewriting the law without congressional input. House Republicans decided to use a Department of Homeland Security–funding bill to block implementation of the orders issued in November, as well as other related immigration-policy decisions. That bill may struggle in the Senate, where some Republicans up for reelection in Democratic-leaning states worry about a political backlash.

One such Republican, Senator Mark Kirk (R., Ill.), told Politico that the House bill “leads us to a potential government shutdown scenario, which is a self-inflicted political wound for Republicans.” Senator Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who helped write the Gang of Eight immigration bill that died in the House, has signaled a willingness to separate the DHS funding from an attempt to restrain Obama. “Defunding that part of the bill that deals with enforcing the executive order makes sense, but we can’t go too far here, because look what happened in Paris,” Graham said last week. “The Department of Homeland Security needs to be up and running.”

Sessions disagrees. “A constitutional breach of this magnitude demands nothing less than a vigorous, public, disciplined campaign to rally the nation behind a Republican effort to deny the president the funds he would need to carry it out,” he writes in a 23-page “immigration handbook” distributed to every congressional Republican on Monday and obtained by NRO. To politicians who worry about losing votes over the issue, Sessions replies by citing the midterm-election results and a referendum in the blue state of Oregon that saw voters overturn a law granting drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants. [Continued]

One difference: While George III was insane, his Parliament was not.

HEARTS

  Stuff on my desk

Microsoft chose not to include Hearts in Windows 8;  instead offering, among others, Random Salad Games "Hearts Deluxe."  They kept pestering me to write a review so I finally did a week or so ago.  I wrote that while I have yet to catch a renege, in other respcts it seemed like Hearts Deluxe was beginning to cheat, and even suggested that they were hiring erstwhile MS Hearts people to program, and if so balls-out cheating and blatant reneges could not be far behind.  This morning "John" broke hearts early on when "Sandra" led clubs.  Clearly an attempt to end my incipient Shoot the Moon atempt. Later John played a club.  I had them! But that's not what this is about.  This is.

I've noticed that several internet games of chance offer Easy/ Hard options.  WTF?  It's a game of chance.  The only way the game can have easy/hard options is if the programmers are cheating.  Right?  The earliest MS Hearts game was real.  I once won 27 straight games before tiring.  That was in the 90's, before the Clinton Culture had time to fully seep in.  Now it has.  Everything is cheat cheat cheat.  Nothing is real.  There are no hard and fast rules for anythong.  That's all.

Mentalist fans will understand why I'm reminded of Lisbon, for whom I've developed something of a crush.
