Das Bernie On Sunday night... someone finally thought to ask Bernie Sanders about his home state's experience adopting a single-payer healthcare system. Vermont had planned to use Obamacare and the millions in federal grants that accompanied it as a jumping-off point for establishing its own universal state-run health insurance system. The plan had to be abandoned, however, when lawmakers and the state's Democratic governor were finally informed it would require a doubling of the state's budget. When Andrea Mitchell asked the question, Sanders gave just the sort of weak answer you'd expect. "Let me just say that you might want to ask the governor of the state of Vermont why he could not do it," Sanders said. "I'm not the governor. I'm the senator from the state of Vermont." Of course, this is a rather damning commentary on the policy. Vermont's governor, unlike its senator, has to worry about budgets balancing and taxpayer rebellions and the like. The spy network was led by James Bond Stockdale, an air-wing commander who was shot down on a bombing mission into North Vietnam on Sept. 9, 1965. He was one of the two most senior-ranking U.S. Navy officers imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton. Stockdale later rose to the rank of Vice Admiral, became one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the Navy, and ran for Vice President. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his secret communication network and for bravery in the face of torture. Former CIA official Robert Wallace calls Stockdale's spy network "one of the most significant activities in Agency history." [Full] I missed this Smithsonian film that aired in April, and of course knew nothing about it.  One of the things that strikes me is, that while John McCain's capture is prominently mentioned, he himself is left completely out of the narrative here.  I find that telling.

“ Defiance is a 2008 World War II era film written, produced, and directed by Edward Zwick, and set during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany. The film is an account of the Bielski partisans, a group led by Polish Jewish brothers who saved and recruited Jews in Belarus during the Second World War. The film stars Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski, Jamie Bell as Asael Bielski, and George MacKay as Aron Bielski. The film is an adaptation of Nechama Tec's book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans (1993). If you liked Red Dawn (original), you'll likely love Defiance (trailer).  Great acting, and factually based.  I give it an easy . As an aside, I coudn't help wondering, as I'm sure many of you have before, and given the abject starvation these refuges experienced, what is the actual nutritional value of seminal fluid?  As it turns out (the scant 3/4 tsp aside), it's great for wrinkles, but prolly not life sustaining. Of course (most) men would rather starve.

This is a 7 miinute clip - the full video here My dad told me that Catholics were sort of happy when FDR beat Al Smith in 1932.  Had he won, the first Catholic president would have been remembered for the Great Depression.  Instead, Herbert Hoover,  who took office on March 4, 1929, and in eight months somehow caused the  money markets crash that sent the world into a depression, took the blame.  That's how the history was taught anyhow. I watched American Experience: The Great Famine last night.  I have no remembrance of ever hearing this story before. It stands on its own as an example of how Lafayette's prediction that "some day America will save the world" was unfolding.  It's also maddening film to watch, but once started, watch it you will (watching on NetFlix is best). You'll perhaps catch some insight into why this story failed to achieve "taught American history" status.  It's called the the commie influence over the American media, and educrats, even then.  In any event, I think you'll be happy you watched. Stalin Invades Poland In pact with Nazis

American Liberals/Progressives treated news of the Soviet pact with Hitler, and invasion of Poland in September, 1939, in much the same way they later responded to Bill Clinton's positive DNA match on Monica's jumper.  Gasps of disbelief, followed by a circling of the wagons, and contolling the message.   You can watch the Hitler Channels until you're blue in the face without seeing any mention of Stalin's invasion of Poland. Because Liberals then, as they do now, controlled the mass media (Hollywood and the New York Times, listen up). Katyn is a Polish film about that invasion, and subsequent mass murder of 20,000 Polish officers in 1940.  When the Nazi's invaded Russia they unearthed the graves, and used film of the atrocity as proof of the inhuman cruelty of the commie bastids Hitlers legions were going to destroy.  After Soviet troops overran the Germans, they too unearthed the Katyn bodies,  and used film of the by now rotten corpses as proof of the inhuman cruelty of the Nazi bastids they were about to defeat.  After occupying Poland at war's end, and tuning it into a virtual commie concentration camp, it became treason to deny that Nazis had been the actual Katyn killers.  People died because they refused to live with that lie.  I figure the least I can do is bring it up again, if for no other reason than it will displease certain, they-know-who-they-are, fellow travellers. *Smugly lights a cigarette, blows smoke.*  — My work is done here.
