Ronald Reagan Rhetoric and Nancy Pelosi Results
Well done, House Republicans. You’ve managed to screw it all up in only a few short weeks.

ERLC’s Russell Moore ‘Disgusted’ by GOP’s Decision to Drop Pro-Life Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 22, 2015—Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, responded to House Republicans’ decision to drop the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,” a major pro-life bill that would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.

“I am disgusted by this act of moral cowardice. If the House Republicans cannot pass something as basic as restricting the abortion of five-month, pain-capable unborn children, what can they get done?

“The Republicans in Congress should come and explain this atrocity to the hundreds of thousands of people gathering here in the nation’s capital to march for life. The congressional Republicans seem to think that pro-lifers will be satisfied with Ronald Reagan rhetoric and Nancy Pelosi results. They are quite wrong.”

House Republicans are now scheduled to vote on a bill Thursday that would prohibit federal funding for abortions. This scheduled vote coincides with the annual March for Life event, held in Washington, D.C., on or around the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision legalizing abortion in the case Roe v. Wade.

The Southern Baptist Convention is America’s largest Protestant denomination with more than 15.8 million members in over 46,000 churches nationwide. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is the SBC’s ethics, religious liberty and public policy agency with offices in Nashville, Tenn., and Washington, D.C.

- END –

Aside: Erik Erikson observes in Young Lives Matter:

Today, in Washington, DC, hundreds of thousands of individuals – more than the combined total of all the police protests – will gather peacefully to begin their annual pilgrimage through DC to the steps of the Supreme Court to protest the greatest injustice America has ever faced – the lives of 57 million unborn children have been extinguished in America since the Supreme Court declared in 1973 a heretofore undiscovered right, nowhere written in the Constitution nor imagined when any part of it was adopted, for some Americans to legally kill other Americans, provided that the victims were sufficiently young ...

Muslim groups in America, like the unindicted co-conspirator and terrorist front group Council on American-Islamic Relations, have targeted Fox News numerous times in the past, and have called for the jobs, and heads, of various Fox News personalities who have spoken the unfiltered truth about radical Islam.

The truth is, the organizers of the event know that Islam isn’t a religion of peace and that radical Islamic jihadists pose a rapidly increasing threat to America, which is something they’d rather the majority of Americans not know.

Fox News doesn’t necessarily stand alone in this instance either, as some other reporters for other media outlets received similar treatment from the event organizers, and all reporters were kicked out of the conference after the 20-minute opening ceremony. [Full]

Fox News may not stand entirely alone in this instance, but by and large the network is viewed as a mortal enemy by both American Islamics like CAIR,and the Democratic Party. FWIW

Marc Miller writes

Rodge, Had you seen this, you would've posted it.
By far the best series on WWI.
The amount of history told is comprehensive.
The narration is excellent.
They slightly colorize to film which gives it a modern viewing experience and to represent the true colors (uniform, dress colors, etc.) of the day.
They add sound effects to make it appear it was filmed with sound.
This war was truly ugly.
What's interesting is they thought it would be a short lived war, maybe a few months, a season or so.
There hadn't been a war in Europe for over 50 years so no one knew what to expect...

Horry clap!  I'm being plethora'd to death with grade A cinema series.  First,  I'm reminded that Justified 5 is out.  At the same time I ran across the complete  "Game of Thrones" series on HBO and thought,"I hear this silliness talked about a lot, let's see what it is," and am instantly hooked.  Plus we have Foyle.  Life is so demanding for we who are so engaged in living it. Sigh.

Have I found myself in some perverse Soylent Green scenario? Yikes.

Woman Showcased By Obama At SOTU Address Is NOT Who He Said She Was

Last night during President Obama’s State of the Union Address, he had a woman sit with his wife that he claimed to be a shining example of our economic recovery, the only problem is that he didn’t tell everyone the whole story.

According to the FreeBeacon, Rebekah Erler was presented by the White House as a woman Obama discovered after she wrote him a letter explaining her economic hardships. Her story, Obama says, is proof positive that Americans are coming forward about their stories of how his policies are helping them.

She’s a former Democrat operative who worked for a Washington Senator, Democrat Patty Murray.
Sounds all butterflies and rainbows, right? Wrong.

See, there’s a slight issue with Mrs. Erler’s story. It’s not that she may not have pulled out of a tough time, and it’s not that she didn’t tell Obama that his policies are working, it’s that her credibility is completely lost when we find out she’s a former Democrat operative who worked for a Washington Senator, Democrat Patty Murray.

Worse yet, this wasn’t the first time that Obama used the former Democrat campaign staffer during one of his speeches for a political prop. You mad yet?

In June, Obama spent a “day in the life” of Erler in order to have “an opportunity to communicate directly with the people he’s working for every day.” Something that he was heavily criticized for by the Minnesota Republican Party who believed he is “so out of touch with reality that he thinks a former Democrat campaign staffer speaks for every Minnesotan,” and apparently, now every American.

(Continue if you must ...)

"Worse yet, this wasn’t the first time that Obama used the former Democrat campaign staffer during one of his speeches for a political prop. You mad yet?"

A Gunfight in Kansas

January 21, 2015
A Gunfight in Kansas
By Stu Tarlowe

On Nieman Road in Shawnee, Kansas (a Kansas City suburb), in a small strip-mall about a block from Shawnee City Hall, and situated between a bilingual storefront church and an investment brokerage. stands a gunshop called “She’s a Pistol”.

If the name seems unusual for a gun store, it’s because “She’s a Pistol” was started by Becky Bieker and her husband, Jon, with a mission to teach women how to protect and defend themselves and their families, and to provide them with the means to do so. The store conducts self-defense classes for women and carries a wide variety of non-lethal defensive weapons in addition to firearms; it caters to women but welcomes men as well.

On Friday, Jan. 9, at around 2 p.m. on a sunny afternoon, four armed individuals entered the shop and encountered Becky Bieker apparently alone behind the counter.

Based on ensuing events, it seems fair to surmise that their intent was robbery.

But whatever their plans may have been, they went awry when Jon Bieker, watching the store’s closed-circuit TV, saw his wife being brutally beaten and emerged from the rear portion of the store to protect and defend her.

The way events were reported by local print and broadcast media, “gunfire broke out”; “shots were fired”; “a shootout ensued”; in the process, three of the individuals were wounded; two were incapacitated and unable to flee, but one wounded robber and his unwounded accomplice fled and were arrested nearby in short order. But Jon Bieker, 44, was fatally wounded and succumbed within hours at a hospital.

One suspect is 18 yrs. old, two are 19 and another is 20. All have now been charged with first-degree murder. Two of them are still hospitalized.

What many of us familiar with this case (I first heard about it on the radio minutes after it happened, while the police were still searching for two of the suspects) can’t help but notice is the way the local media have reported on it.

The local news stories have not only been deliberately stingy with the details of how events unfolded, and have used a deliberately passive voice (e.g. “gunfire erupted”), but they have consistently characterized the suspects as “teenagers” or merely “teens”. It was also several days before any identifying details about the four “teens” were reported; nor were their names reported for several days, and it was longer before their photos were shown.

The cynics among us have almost come to expect that when a journalist’s physical description of a suspect conspicuously omits anything about the suspect’s complexion, there’s a reason.

The cynics among us have almost come to expect that when a journalist’s physical description of a suspect conspicuously omits [any details] about the suspect ... there’s a reason.

And that’s part of why the cynics feel that the media are following a template we’ve seen before, as in the way 17 yr. old, 6’2” and 175 lb. “little” Trayvon Martin was characterized as “a child”, accompanied by a childhood photo, and the way Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO was characterized as a “gentle giant”.

But labeling armed robbers as “teens” ought to be a two-way street. If these alleged murderers are indeed “teenagers” -- which carries the subtext that they are therefore not expected to be fully responsible for their decisions and behavior -- I think it would be only fair to involve their parents, and to make them at least subject to questioning.

In the Ferguson, MO case, the media were quick to publish details about Officer Darren Wilson, including his address, which made his family subject to harassment and even death threats.

I have no desire to harass or threaten the parents of Hakeem Malik, Nicquan Ke-Aaron Midgyett, Londro Patterson III or Deanthony Wiley, but I’d certainly like to hear them answer some questions. For example:

  • Did these “teenagers” attend school?
  • Did they have jobs?
  • Did they live with their parents?
  • Did they have prior brushes with the law? (The four “teens” are also now being investigated in connection with a string of convenience store robberies.)
  • Do they come from families with a history of criminality?
  • Just what sort of upbringing did they have?
  • Were they ever actually taught right from wrong? Were they ever disciplined? Were they ever encouraged to learn self-control?
  • Just what aspect of their upbringing motivated them to choose armed robbery as a career?

And while I’m posing questions, here’s another that comes to mind: While Kansas state law provides for the death penalty, it has not been imposed since 1965. This leaves many Kansans, including myself, wondering, “Just who do you have to murder in order to actually be executed in Kansas?”

And here’s another aspect to this case: Becky Bieker (herself hospitalized after being assaulted, and dealing with the grief and shock of seeing her husband slain) has made it a point to implore everyone (including all the customers, neighbors and other local citizens who have rallied in support, made donations and attended a candlelight vigil and march in Jon’s honor) to refrain from politicizing this tragedy vis-à-vis “gun control”.

But that hasn’t stopped the anti-gun forces from trying to make political hay. And, as usual, their “arguments” are unimpeded by logic, and follow the meme of blaming guns per se, not the criminals who misuse them. One caller to a local radio station actually said, “Well, if the man hadn’t been involved in the business of selling guns, he wouldn’t be dead!”

Fortunately, such “arguments” are getting very little traction, at least in these parts and in this case. Common sense makes it pretty evident that, while Jon Bieker made the ultimate sacrifice, the fact that he had a gun and knew how to use it saved his wife’s life and probably the lives of others who, but for Jon, would be the next victims of a gang of four armed “teens” brazen enough to attempt a daylight robbery of a gun store.

(Contributions to a memorial fund for Jon Bieker [and to help Becky with expenses] may be made through the Kansas State Rifle Association, at http://www.ksraweb.org/.)

Stu Tarlowe, a native of NYC who now lives in the Sunflower State, has penned more than 75 pieces for American Thinker. His pantheon of heroes and role models includes Barry Farber, Jean Shepherd, Long John Nebel, Aristide Briant, Col. Jeff Cooper, Rabbi Meir Kahane, Hunter S. Thompson, Ed McMahon and G. Gordon Liddy.

The State of the Union Bullshit in Context

This site lets you use a Bookworm database to read Obama's State of the Union in the context of all the other State of the Union messages given by American presidents. For any word in the message, just click on the text: the word will turn red. If you want to search a two-word phrase, just highlight both words. (You can't search for phrases longer than two words).

If you then click on a bar, you'll get an (ugly, unformatted, alas) list of all the times that President used the phrase. Certain forms of punctuation (hyphenated words, etc.) won't work quite right yet. Keep in mind that the State of the Union has changed a lot in its history. Of particular importance to understanding these charts is knowing that it was written, not spoken, before Woodrow Wilson. You're looking at the  address: change that dropdown to use any other year as a baseline.

Also, check out the two pieces Mitch Fraas and I wrote for the Atlantic on the language of past State of the Unions and the locations mentioned in past speeches. I owe the idea for this layout to Yoni Appelbaum and John Gould at the Atlantic. The text of the speeches is from the American Presidency project at UCSB, except for the 2015 text which I took from the White House's post at Medium. [Full]

Earlier in the month I carried on about how "Nature's Flu Shot" cured me of the black plague Obama's immigration policies have inflicted on this nation. Well, not quite, it seems.  After finally going to a real Dr., who found strep and other stuff, which pulmonary woes continue even as we speak, and are being treated with—what's that stuff that let's you hit home runs—steroids!  Yes steroids. So, don't always listen to me.

It appears the Australia’s first libertarian senator has some harsh words for “anti discrimination leftists” who wish to crack down on free speech.

An anti free speech social Democrat named Gary Burns in Australia got a firm rebuke when he wrote to senator David Leyonjhelm about how Australia’s multiculturalism is the law. Leyonjhelm responded harshly, saying “Go fuck yourself you communist turd.”

Australia has free speech codes, not a First Amendment like the United States. People can be prosecuted for offending others. It’s pretty disgusting and sad, but this exchange is a thing of beauty. Praise to Senator Leyonjhelm for his guts!

Season 5?

justified

“
Dear TRKOF (& Sweden):

Rodger:

Or, more correctly, Your Royal Highness, Keeper of The Faith, Assistant Deputy Supervisor of the Realm:

You said a while back (I'm pretty sure it was you, and if it wasn't, I can't come up with anyone sufficiently erudite to suggest that it wasn't you) that Justified was the best thing on TV, now or ever.

"Ever" is a long time, but I'm more than willing to concede that Justified is a reasonable challenge to the "ever" hypothesis.

For the past 3 evenings I've been binge watching season 5 of Justified, ever since I discovered it available on amazon prime video Sunday night. I am disturbed (not necessarily in a general sense, although there are some who might contest that assessment) that season 5 was only 13 episodes long. With minimal effort I think it could have gone to 16 or 18.

That said, what has me in the depths of despair is the discovery that season 6 will be the final season of Justified. I realize that life cycles exist, and that all things must eventually end, and  perhaps Raylan and Boyd jousting from wheelchairs with Dewey's illegitimate offspring keeping score may not be the best finale (I do think, however, that Alicia Witt has much more to contribute, once her bruises heal....), I'm reluctant to give up on one of the few bright spots remaining in Western Civilization. (Not to mention I'll have to wait a whole year to see season 6 on amazon prime, since I don't have cable.)

What I'm suggesting is this: We have an entire TV season to mobilize the Barn Army and forcibly demand more seasons of Justified. I'm willing to contribute as much as $20 to assist in storming the offices of FX to demand the series continue. And, if someone can tell me where those offices are, I'm willing to write several strongly worded missives containing random desperate pleas for Raylan and Boyd to continue their conflict, with or wtihout Ava.

What say you, Rodger? Do we decline into ignominy, doomed to purchase DVD sets of Justified to savor in our bunkers, or do we demand everlasting life for Raylan and Boyd?

Last Sergeant Nosmo,
anxious (and dejected) member of the Famous Barn Army

What?  There's a season 5?

B1G Hoop Thoughts

HOOPS

It's fun being a Terps hoop fan these days.  Been a long time. Men's team ranked 8th, women 7th.  Especially nice since the B1G sportswriters picked the men to finish 10th.  Anyway, the comment of the week comes from the Michigan State Spartans game thread during their blow-out loss.

Maryland and Rutgers

They’re like those kids that your mom made you invite to your birthday party. You have no animosity towards them but you wish they’d just go home.

The thing is, I completely understand. To this very day I think taking FSU and Georgia Tech into the ACC screwed it up.  Never did think of them, and those who followed,  as anything but outsiders.  It will be 50 years before the Terps are accepted in the B1G.

While I'm at it, here's a comment from the Terps board that corresponds with my thoughts about ACC-B1G refs.

Finally.  Yes, I am concerned about Thursday's game at Indiana. They look very Terpish to me.

Bond Films

BONDAGE

"Seagram's Vodka Martini Stirred, Not Shaken, With a Dash of YooHoo."

My standard for all Bond movies is From Russia with Love, the best and last of the genre before the comedy writers took over.  After Live and Let Die, where Jackie Gleason played the cartoonish redneck Sheriff  Buford T. Justice,  I've not paid to see another, and even eschewed most television offerings.

Fast-forward about 20 years.  Earlier this month I watched Daniel Craig (the best Bond?) in Skyfall, and thought it well done.  So I tried Die Another Day (Brosnan) and found it entertaining.  Hmmm. Sunday I rolled the dice again with an earlier Brosnan, The World Is Not Enough. The screen caps below say all that needs saying about this clunker, where the Brits team with Russia to foil a plot to nuke an oil pipeline. Success depends on top Russian nuclear physicist Christmas Jones, as unconvincing a nerd as Jerry Lewis in the Nutty Professor. And that was supposed to be funny (but wasn't).

Top Russina Nuclear Physisist Dr. Christmas Jones (Denise Richards) in The World Is Not Enough

Of course Bond eventually pleasures her in the fadeout as M watches the infrared heaving on her monitor. Oh my.

But, that's not what prompts me to do this posting.  Last night I watched the newest Rowan Atkinson Bond parody,  Johnny English 3 (clip).   Not only is it the best (I actually laughed out loud three times), but I found myself thinking, "Hey, if this was released as a James Bond film it would  ranked among the best."

The Pope and AGW

“
Just My Opinion

Pope Francis I: First Jesuit Pope Shatters Centuries Of Mistrust
Father Thomas Reese, a Jesuit and former editor in chief of the order's weekly magazine America, told CNN in 2005 that  the word "Jesuit" had become synonymous through the centuries with scheming, and that their very reputation as the most free-thinking of Catholics had made them suspect in the eyes of the church hierarchy.

Pope removes Cardinal Burke from Vatican post
A prominent devotee of the traditional liturgy and outspoken defender of traditional doctrine on controversial moral issues, Burke had appeared increasingly out of step with the current pontificate.

Obama finds an ally on political controversies at the Vatican
President Obama increasingly is finding a key policy ally in the Vatican, with Pope Francis standing virtually shoulder to shoulder with the White House on income inequality and a historic diplomatic reboot with communist Cuba. The pontiff next year also appears poised to offer greater support to the president on climate change initiatives and reportedly wants to be a leading voice at a U.N. global warming summit next year, where the American president will make perhaps his greatest pitch to date for more dramatic action on the environment.

Papal Text Says Man Betrays God by Destroying the Environment
MANILA — Pope Francis waded into the global debate on climate change and the environment on Sunday, saying in the text of a speech that man was destroying nature and betraying God's calling to be stewards of creation.

I think my aversion to Jesuits has much to do with my casual acquaintance with those who've served in South America.  My general view (bias) is that, from Mexico south, the predominantly Spanish SA governments are among the most corrupt and cruelest in our hemisphere, if not the world.  For that reason Jesuits serving there have become militant in efforts to protect their flocks, and that militancy manifests itself politically.  Okay.  But, simply put, that mindset ought not include North America, the cradle of worldwide democracy and freedom.   I think I see some of that attitude in Pope Francis (via Argentina).

Moving on then.  It's my nature to look to tradition when it comes to institutions.  I am a strict constitutionalist politically.  I side with Cardinal Burke's  resistance to  some of  Pope Francis's attempts to "modernize" Catholic doctrine. Also, there's  Francis's ascendancy after Pope Benedict's unprecedented resignation.  Resignation.  Made me wary.   But nothing has concerned me more than Francis's  recent, as reported by the New York Times lobby, dalliance with Brock Obama.  I have no real problem with his lobbying Il Douchebag on the Cuba issue.  I do have a major problem with him embracing—in a possible quid pro quo imprimatur—man caused (AGW) global warming.  The incontrovertible facts are:
  • Obama is a liar.  Obama is a proponent for, and long time facilitator of infanticide.  Obama is the nearest thing to an Augusto Pinochet or Hugo Chávez dictator that El Norte have known.  He ought, on those points alone, have earned the Pope's enmity.  There's more. The entire "climate movement" is manifestly a leftist operation designed to establish one world government, and bring the United States into economic equilibrium. And!, every pseudo-scientific pronouncement, study, white paper, or law passed on man caused climate change, over the past 50 years, has been systematically shown to be fabricated.  Lies. Every diligently scientific study extant agrees.
So.  AGW climatists are liars.  Obama is a liar.  The American left are liars.  If it's true that Pope Francis has indeed signed on to using AGW climate change as an instrument to achieve social change, then he too would be a liar.  Yes, he is still  Vicarius Christi, but we've had bad Popes before.  A Pope's infallibility extends only to proclamations of doctrine of faith or morals.  He hasn't crossed that line. Pray he does not. Because if he does, he would be an illegitimate pope. IMO.

What about Eve's?

                    Boys Will Be Boys

Today's Homily

Scott Hahn tells this story:

Timmy learns about Adam and Eve in his preschool class.  How Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and how Adam was so afraid that he covered his naked body with a fig leaf and tried to hide.  Once home he excitedly told his mom all about it, and the book the teacher read from.  Mother retrieved a great huge family bible from the closet and plunked it on the table, telling him that she would read him more stories like that after she finished her chores.  Timmy climbed up on the chair and with two hands flipped it open to a page where someone had pressed a leaf.  "Mommy," he cried.  "Come here—I found Adam's underpants!"
