"Pre-Revolutionary"

“pre-revolutionary”

The people cannot be all, & always well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ..
We have had 13. states independent 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century & a half for each state. What country before ever existed a century & a half without a rebellion? & what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?
Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is it's natural manure. Thomas Jefferson Letter to William Smith

Angry Mob

...  Americans’ lack of confidence in their leadership is so crippled that they are now “pre-revolutionary,” according to pollster Pat Caddell.

A new Rasmussen poll shows that just 17 per cent of Americans believe that the U.S. government has the consent of the governed, an all time low. This dovetails with a record low for Congress’ approval rating, which stands at a paltry 6 per cent, while 46 per cent of Americans think most members of Congress are corrupt, with just 29% believing otherwise.

“The number of voters who feel the government has the consent of the governed – a foundational principle, contained in the Declaration of Independence – is down from 23% in early May and has fallen to its lowest level measured yet,” according to Rasmussen.

Debt Man Walking

Rush Limbaugh is properly distraught today, but used some of his anger to create three delicious Obamonikers (above) ... As I speak, Obama has just stated that we do not need S&P to tell us that we need to raise taxes.  Limbo is guessing that just before his press conference the Fed flooded the market with buy orders in order to show a positive response to his speech.  We'll see.

Black Student Sues Minnesota School Over "Wigger Day"

"Wigger is a pejorative slang term for a white person who emulates the mannerisms, language and fashions associated with African-American culture," the complaint states.

I'm mezza-mezza on this one.  I  empathize with the Black student who may see this as a racial taunt instead of the culture ridiculing something that begs ridicule—  the black gansta meme.  I see nothing but upside if  grade schoolers go back to greeting one another with "Hey, how are you?" instead of  "What-up nigga?"

The Obama administration and congressional Democrats are betting their political futures on the hope that the American electorate is ignorant and forgetful, and hence the memo has gone out to functionaries hither and yon, from David Axelrod to John Kerry: This is to be called the “tea-party downgrade.” That this is said with straight faces bespeaks either an unshakable contempt for the mind of the American voter or an as-yet unplumbed capacity for Democratic self-delusion. (Obama Makes History (of Our AAA Credit)

I find myself compelled to read, store, and promote arguments like these in the NRO piece.  It goes back to my earliest days of using the internet thing to discuss politics,  in real time, on the NYT bulletin board.  I found that, in many cases, presenting actual data in response to some leftist canker-blossom's postulation could win an argument.  Sometimes I'd be  met with a seemingly irrefutable counter-claim.   That caused me to spend time, hours sometimes (no Google, no search engines), to get at the truth of the matter.  It was a game you could win, if you were good enough.  So just now I'm wondering why I'm still doing this?  Facts don't matter anymore.  They just don't.  The opponent today is ideology.  This ideology, as advanced 100 years ago by Dear Leader#1..

  • A lie told often enough becomes the truth.
  • If Socialism can only be realized when the intellectual development of all the people permits it, then we shall not see Socialism for at least five hundred years.
  • It is true that liberty is precious; so precious that it must be carefully rationed.
  • Our program necessarily includes the propaganda of atheism.
  • The best way to destroy the capitalist system is to debauch the currency.
  • The goal of socialism is communism.
  • The government is tottering. We must deal it the death blow an any cost. To delay action is the same as death.
  • The press should be not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses.
  • The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation.
  • There are no morals in politics; there is only expedience. A scoundrel may be of use to us just because he is a scoundrel.
In other times, this NRO sequence would have value.  Now I don't think it does, other than validating what some people already know to be true.  Sigh.  Back to my fallback position.  The  BUTTON

(On the plus side, truth will alway prevail.  That I, almost certainly, will not be around to enjoy the day doesn't alter the fact. Cheers. )

In an age where every level of government have assumed the right to monitor every movement of the citizenry, this is scary. I found particularly creepy the Face Book challenge of identifying everyone in the picture.  And yes, I have grown to view all new technology in context of its usefulness to a police state.  But, that's just me.

Counterpoint - Reagan's Use of Scripture

Oh the Humility!

Reagan's Use of Scripture

For the last four years I have been very concerned about the massive arms buildup undertaken by President Reagan. I have criticized his military buildup as inefficient, irresponsible and wasteful. And as for our full-speed-ahead charge into a new arms race, I have argued that this was not in the best interests of world peace. I fought that defense buildup as hard as I could and I was all ready to gear up for battle again.

Imagine my surprise upon hearing the President's assertion, backed up by Scripture, that our arms spending is sanctioned by God. I was willing to take on the President, but I sure didn't want to tangle with the Lord.

ABC's Cokie Roberts said something on national television Sunday that made her colleague George Will shake his head on camera.

COKIE ROBERTS: This group of people in New York [Standard and Poor’s] is actually talking about more government rather than less government, Congressman. In fact, the reason they like France and Great Britain is because they’re parliamentary systems where the majority gets what it wants no matter what.

And the problem that we have here is the Constitution of the United States of America which actually does require people to come together from different perspectives whether it's divided government or not. We have divided branches of government under any circumstance.

Wow!

Debt deal in hand, Obama blasts Washington politics

Seeming embittered by the process that sent him a bill to sign Tuesday, President Obama blasted Washington for adding an "impediment" to the economic recovery with a "manufactured crisis" over raising the debt ceiling.

The Polish-French artist Balthasar Klossowski de Rola is best known as Balthus. He was an esteemed but controversial modern painter. Throughout his career Balthus rejected the usual conventions of the art world. He insisted that his paintings should be seen and not read about, and he resisted any attempts made to build his biographical profile. His paintings often depicted young girls in erotic and voyeuristic poses which always caused controversy.

SELLING MITT LEGERDEMAIN

I just stumbled across this  August 2nd  blab form THE  HILL.  The left leaning voice of establishment politics has today's spotight in the "Shove  Mitt McCain down their bloody throats"  postulation.
Romney rejection of debt deal stands out in Republican presidential field

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) opposes the debt deal struck by President Obama and congressional leaders over the weekend — a stance that stands out from most of the GOP presidential field.

Romney emerged after weeks of silence to oppose the compromise measure that would authorize a two-tranche increase in the nation’s borrowing authority in exchange for up to $2.4 trillion in deficit reduction.

FLASH FORWARD   to August 4th  -- HUH?

Sarah Palin knocked presidential candidate Mitt Romney for waiting until the debt-ceiling compromise was a “done deal” before speaking out against it.

“Bless his heart, I have respect for Mitt Romney, but I do not have respect for what he has done through this debt increase debate,” she said Tuesday night in a Fox News interview.

THE  HIL's patrons —   who read past the lede — soon discover the facts hardly live up to the title's premis.

But with the exception of Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Ron Paul (R-Texas), who oppose raising the debt limit under any circumstances ... .,

Until Sarah Palin, and possibly Rick Perry get into the race, Michelle Bachman is the only legitimate choice we have right now.  Legitimate to those of us who demand positive and REAL change in government, anyway.   (Sadly, even Herman Cain  appeared to flip-flop mid-stream on this issue)

The Racist NO NEW TAX Conspiracy

Members of Congress who signed no-new taxes pledges are engaging in a criminal conspiracy to overthrow the government of the United States because President Obama is black.

That’s the theory put forward by Calvin O. L. Henry, president of the Oregon Assembly for Black Affairs, in a July 5 letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Ruh-Roh.  This is going to be a much nastier depression than the thirties version, when comparably few gangstas -  like Bonnie and Clyde  -  acted up.  This time we have whole classes of people who don't obey laws they don't like,  have a huge sense of entitlement, and now, evidently, are told the reason we hate Obama is because he's Black..   Not because he's a racist Marxist thug, but because of his skin color.   Shoot.  Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden are White, and we hate them just as much, and for the same reason.

In a similar vein ...
The Elite Is Revolting

Remember Al Gore?  ...

"The nonviolent part of it isn't finished yet, but we need to have an American spring ... Gore made a direct appeal to somebody named Keith:

"I want to tell you, Keith, this country is in trouble. Our democracy has been withering on the vine. It really has been. This has been going on for some time. But this is not an event that can be taken lightly. I know it's difficult to imagine that people who care about the values that this country was based on will rise up and get much more involved in the democratic process. But that is exactly what we need, and that is the only thing that can get our country back on the right track." [more]

Recent History in 136 Words

On spending, it is important to recall how extraordinary the blowout of the last three years has been. We've seen nothing like it since World War II. Nothing close. The nearby chart tracks federal outlays as a share of GDP since 1960. The early peaks coincide with the rise of the Great Society, the recession of 1974-75, and then a high of 23.5% with the recession of 1982 and the Reagan defense buildup.
Obama Pelosi Blowout

From there, spending declines, most rapidly during the 1990s as defense outlays fell to 3% of GDP in 2000 from its Reagan peak of 6.2% in 1986. The early George W. Bush years saw spending bounce up to a plateau of roughly 20% of GDP, but no more than 20.7% as recently as 2008.

Then came the Obama blowout, in league with Nancy Pelosi's Congress. [Full]
