AOL NEWS features the Obama eligibility question on its front page.  Their treatment is identical to the Left media reporting on the Global Warming hoax.  "Look at what these silly people believe.  Aren't they just too, too stupid?  That debate is over."  For a subject that's been all but ignored,  48%  of respondents to AOL's question, "Do you have any doubt about Obama's eligibility to be president because of his birth status?" say YES.  The cited Politico report offers not a word about the rather substantive Birther bill of particulars, but, rather, dismisses them (me) because of  "no grounding in evidence. Courts across the country have summarily rejected the movement's theory —." Politico leads the reader to believe that these court "findings" were founded in evidence of Obama's Hawaiian birth, when. in fact, the courts have  dismissed suits citing plaintiff's  "lack of standing"  to bring the suit.  Yup.  There, evidently, exists not a single United States citizen with standing to question something so elementary as the eligibility of a presidential candidate."  Hawaii officials, along with contemporary birth announcements, affirm that Obama was in fact born in Honolulu in 1961. Oh really?  Then perhaps one of them would deign to identify  the name of the hospital the HIM was reputedly born in?  That's about as basic as you can get. The fact is that all the evidence points to his being born outside the country, including statements by his immediate family.  Duh. If I'm a Birther, they're prime examples of the lack of critical thinking that finds us today in some real pickles, and Al Gore with a Nobel Peace Prize, for G_d's sake!

Felix Salmon's  Recipe for Disaster: The Formula That Killed Wall Street takes a complex subject and seems to make it understandable.  The problem I'm having is with his conclusion: that David X Li's  Guassian copula formula's use by the financial markets killed your 401(k) .  I'll use his analogy to illustrate my problem with his position, that oversimplifying the correlation parameter skewed the risk assessment process.  Did I get that right?  Close enough?  Okay. To understand the mathematics of correlation better, consider something simple, like a kid in an elementary school: Let's call her Alice. The probability that her parents will get divorced this year is about 5 percent, the risk of her getting head lice is about 5 percent, the chance of her seeing a teacher slip on a banana peel is about 5 percent, and the likelihood of her winning the class spelling bee is about 5 percent. If investors were trading securities based on the chances of those things happening only to Alice, they would all trade at more or less the same price.  But, the boy sitting next to Alice has head lice, and his mother hides the fact to spare him a shunning.  The school's principal is soon assessed of the now school-wide epidemic of head lice by the school nurse.  He  pays her to keep quiet about it so parents won't be upset.   Are you scratching your head?  Wait.  Change "head lice" to "worthless Fannie Mae mortgages."
