Particle Fever

Particle Fever

GeV Higher, Higher!

Arguing with an engineer is a lot like wrestling in the mud with a pig. After a couple of hours you realize the pig likes it.
It seems that I have an uncommon number of engineer types who stop here; I don't know why.  Either it's because they like the mental gymnastics; i.e., I am always one step ahead of them; or they enjoy shooting at a stationary target?  At any rate, I once chose Journalism as a major because it was the only course of study in all of the University of Maryland that had not a single math requirement.  And that's odd too, because all the various aptitude tests I've taken show music and mathematics as my strong suit.  I can only conclude that all that is trumped by recklessness, another trait, which has me doing stuff like this, or plain carelessness.

Bottom line then is,  when it comes to astro physics I'm a spectator who could not if you put a gun to my head understand the numbers behind Particle Fever, but am nevertheless enthralled by them.  BTW, I was rooting for a 140 GeV. Why?  I know, but can't explain it.  Also, if I was involved,  Monica would give me a boner, for some reason.

Holder's Mustache

Outrage # 2,754

President Obama, at the National Prayer Breakfast this morning, said:

Unless we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.

This is banal.

The problem with all such high-horse declarations by Obama is his continual omission of historical context and, in this case, his conflation of the frequent with the rare. The Crusades began in 1095, almost a millennium ago; the Inquisition in 1478, now over 500 years past. When the president says “people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” he should remember that all religions at the time committed terrible deeds that shock the modern sense of morality — given the savage wars between Christendom and Islam, and the religious purifications and civil discord common to all the religious factional strife that played out, violently, in accord with the ethos of the times.  [continued]

The string of invective that invariably floods my brainal zone if I even see a picture of this dickweed poseur, let alone hear what he says, has again left me senseless .  I need a shot of red whiskey.

When The Red Red Robin
Comes Bob Bob Bobbin Along

A friend who'd just moved to MD from New York in the 60's once exclaimed, as we drove past a herd of cows in the Maryland countryside, "Look! Buffalo!"  Tom Mann grew up in the Washington D.C. area.  He evidently saw his Buffalo, LOL.

The Robin's song still carries me back to my Chicago yoot, even to the point of sensing our neighborhood's  springtime smell and, for some god-only-knows reason, the Jewel Tea grocery store??

Every time the temp here plunges below 32º, as it has now,  we are plagued with Robins.  I say plagued because they dominate our heated watering hole and are the poopiest birds I've ever seen. The railing only looks clean here because I'd just doused it with a bucket of hot water to clean the black and white gobs of birdshit they deposit.  And they're not singing.

TRUE CRIME STORIES

The Reid Crime Family

HOWARD DEAN  ''There's not one shred of evidence that any Democrat, A, knew that he was getting a contribution from Jack Abramoff and, B, did anything in exchange for it. And that's why this is a Republican finance scandal and not some sort of bipartisan scandal. ... ''

CHRIS WALLACE  '' So if we find ... that there were some Democrats who wrote letters on behalf of some of the Indian tribes that Abramoff represented, then what do you say, sir?''

DEAN:'' That's a big problem, and those Democrats are in trouble, and they should be in trouble.'' -- Transcript: Dem Chairman Howard Dean on 'FNS'

I just love that image of Harry Reid bandaged after he, what was it?; accidentally hit himself with an iron skillet?  Didn't buy that story for a minute.  From what I know about Harry Reid's past involvement with the Nevada underworld, and this recent picture of his brother Larry who, what was it?; ran into a doorway? I glean the real truth, as would any intuitive person.

After the  mid term elections that saw Harry ousted as  Senate  Majority Leader,  various mob characters demanded their money back now that he would no longer be able to deliver for them.  What?  You forgot  that the Los Angeles Times (amongst others) did a series on the Reid crime family?  Even more serendipitous is this response when  I Googled "find similar pictures" of the above.

Pretty much proves that the media which covered up Harry's past has racial memory that slips out now that they're off guard. Yep.  Someone wants Harry to swim with the fishes. I'll settle for federal prison.

Wisconsin Teacher Unions

Union Thugs

It’s getting harder and harder to find left-wing activists, even in public school unions in progressive Wisconsin. “In 2011, in the wake of the largest workers uprising in recent U. S. history, I was elected president of the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association,” Bob Peterson writes in the journal Rethinking Schools. “Unfortunately, that spring uprising, although massive and inspirational, was not strong enough to stop Gov. Walker from enacting the most draconian anti-public sector labor law in the nation.”

Reality check: “Only 305 Wisconsin school districts’ unions sought recertification this November, dropping from 408 that did the year before,” Diana-Ashley Krach writes in School Reform News. “Additionally, state employees voted to decertify 25 school district unions.”

“Under Act 10, also known as the Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill, which went into effect in 2011, recertification requires a 51 percent “yes” vote from eligible union members.”

“Using those criteria, Walker would never have been elected,” Peterson asserts. Actually, Governor Walker was reelected with 53 percent of the vote.  What’s really astonishing is that the unions cannot even inspire the loyalty of one of the most left-leaning voting blocs in a left-leaning state.

Ironically, by Peterson’s own summary, the reforms were hardly draconian. He writes of Act 10 that “It left intact only the right to bargain base-wage increases up to the cost of living.” Most people think this is the prime purpose of a union. [The fun continues]

Jeb Bush or Scott Walker.  Soooooo hard to choose.  LOL

Judis Priest!

A few days ago, John Judis, the co-author of the book on every liberal’s bookshelf, The Emerging Democratic Majority, took to the pages of National Journal to write an article called The Emerging Republican Advantage.

Hilarity Ensues ...

So, who does Judis think can win consistently for Republicans. No surprise: RINOs.

It now appears that, in some form, the Republican era which began in 1980 is still with us. Reagan Republicanism—rooted in the long-standing American distrust of government, but perhaps with its roughest theocratic and insurrectionary edges sanded off for a national audience—is still the default position of many of those Americans who regularly go to the polls. It can be effectively challenged when Republicans become identified with economic mismanagement or with military defeat. But after the memory of such disasters has faded, the GOP coalition has reemerged—surprisingly intact and ready for battle.

What Judis elides over and dismisses is the fact that [Full]

WTFF?

I'm sure all of you have experienced the phenomenon I call shit fall, where your zietgebers plunge into flesh eating mode.  I'm suddenly there.  I'm not going catalog it all, but last night capped it.  Monday night I watched Top Gear's season 7 episode (08/04/2009)  where  Ellen MacArthur drove the fastest ever celebrity time around the track.   Then I paused it and went on to other things.  I cannot explain why I find so much comfort in this series which began in 2002.  As of 16 March 2014 167 episodes of the series have been broadcast, spanning 21 series.  I have been through them all, maybe four or 5 times. Anyway, last night when I went to Netflix it was missing from my "recently watched" scroll.  I went to My list, and clicked that.  WTFF? Everything from 2002 until 2011 is gone! No announcement.  Nothing. I am enveloped in a dark black cloud.  I had to have four fingers of Maker's Mark with my Prozac this morning, and it hasn't kicked in.

But Wait!
