CUBAMA
Lifting the Cuba embargo

The REAL story

His minions (and low-information Americans whose knowledge of current events comes from the MSM and late-night TV talk shows) will claim that Barack Obama's "normalization" of relations with Cuba is Obama's "'Tear Down this Wall' Moment".

But the truth is far less noble, at least for those who truly believe in freedom. For years, Cuba has been propped up by financial help from Venezuela and Russia. Now falling oil prices (thanks to "fracking") have impacted both those countries' revenues from the oil they produce; they no longer can afford to be so generous toward Cuba.

So Obama has stepped in to help rescue "Uncle Fidel's Island Paradise"; lifting the embargo on Cuba will result in new avenues of financial support flowing into Cuba, but will not change the Cuban regime or its policies.

So it's really just a matter of one Communist helping out another.

Which brings us to a quote I ran across today from the REAL "Tear Down this Wall"-man himself, Pres. Ronald Reagan:

"How do you tell a Communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin."

  • (Or my own formulation: You can always tell a Communist, but you can't tell him much.  - Skoonj)
And let's not forget the grand hypocrisy of support for the Castro regime by anyone claiming to oppose racism, be it Obama or the Congressional Black Caucus (whose members have traveled to Cuba and fawned over the Castros) while the Castro regime practices blatant racism against Black Cubans.

The rising cost of free stuff

       WHAT GUMMINT DOES

They cited the example of the asthma drug albuterol sulfate. The average cost for a bottle of 100 pills was $11 last October, the pair said. The average charge by this April was up to $434.

The antibiotic doxycycline hyclate cost $20 last October for a bottle of 500 tablets, the congressmen observed. By April, the price was $1,849.

"Most generics are increasing in price by an average 10% a year," said Bryan Birch, chief executive of Truveris, a New York company that monitors prescription drug costs. "But we've seen some popular drugs increase by more than 650% in the last year."

He cited simvastatin, the generic equivalent of cholesterol drug Zocor, and clomipramine hydrochloride, the generic version of antidepressant Anafranil. Prices for each rose more than 650% from June 2013 to this June, Birch said.

He said consumers often are unaware of such huge price hikes because they face only a copay when they buy meds at a drugstore.

The skyrocketing costs are borne primarily by insurance companies, which subsequently raise people's premiums to accommodate the greater expenses, Birch said.

"Someone ends up paying the bill," he said. "Ultimately, it's consumers."

Christmas Eats

As Christmas day approaches, I want to talk less about people whose guts I hate, and more about them I find pleasure in.  Vivian Howard ( PBS series, "A Chef's Life") is one.  I am not making this up.  Earlier in the week I thought a good post would be about how parents should start teaching their chilluns how to prepare raw food  Especially meat.  Like, shoot, skin, and gut a squirrel.  Or Chickens.  And lo!.  This episode.  It's warm, fuzzy, and full of good cheer.

Aside.  This Chicago boy learned about such stuff because gram and gramps had a farm in Indiana where me & sister-sue spent  part of out summer.  At age 8 I was harvesting
and cleaning  chicken, rabbit, and squirrel for gramma's pot.  Gramps had pigs, but trucked them to an Indianapolis abattoir.

Take a Brain Douche Merkel

Das Angela Merkel Dusche

Yes, and check out Andrea Merkel's comments about the German protests.

I'm sure you mean Angela [pronounced with a hard "g"] Merkel:

I notice that Merkel's position commits the logical fallacy of conflating "Islamophobia" with "anti-Semitism", while conveniently ignoring that hatred of Jews is a major tenet of Islam:

A spokeswoman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday that the German government condemns the acts of free speech “in the strongest terms.” The spokesperson continued, “There is no place in Germany for Islamophobia or anti-Semitism, hatred of foreigners or racism,” she added.

FOR THE RECORD

Think of how stupid the average person is — and realize half of them are stupider than that.”

— George Carlin

Congress has gone full stupid.

Late Tuesday night, lawmakers released a 1,603-page bill that would dole out more than $1 trillion in taxpayer money (the federal government, by the way, has collected a record amount in taxes this year, but still can’t stop overspending).

Then, Mr. Obama came out to support — Mr. Boehner’s bill. Yes, the president loved the massive spending for Obamacare and his amnesty program. Then, just before the crucial vote, Republicans caved on just about everything.
When House Speaker John Boehner campaigned for the leadership job years ago, he vowed to give members at least 72 hours to read any bill before a vote. Back in 2010, the speaker said he didn’t think “having 2,000-page bills on the House floor serves anyone’s best interest — not the House, not for the members and certainly not for the American people.”

But that was before Mr. Boehner decided the highly flawed CRomnibus — with full funding for the budget-breaking Obamacare; for President Obama’s new amnesty program for more than 4 million illegal aliens; even for Michelle Obama’s disastrous school lunch program — simply had to pass.

Republicans, who just five weeks ago crushed Democrats in the midterm elections — with Americans finally declaring “enough is enough” — were humiliated before, during and after the vote. First, the speaker couldn’t harness his troops to support the bill he was pushing. Both sides went behind closed doors as defections in the GOP mounted.

Then, Mr. Obama came out to support — Mr. Boehner’s bill. Yes, the president loved the massive spending for Obamacare and his amnesty program. Then, just before the crucial vote, Republicans caved on just about everything.

Right before the final vote, Rep. Jim Moran said Democrats got “virtually everything” they wanted in the CRomnibus package. “In 20 years of being on the appropriations [committee], I haven’t seen a better compromise in terms of Democratic priorities,” he said with a smile.

Two weeks ago I compared Boner to an enemy infiltrator in The GOP’s War On Obama’s Executive Action Lasted About 5 Minutes
In his comment, Robert Mitchell Jr. importuned:  Do not do the Democrat's work for them, don't attack Republicans, fight, fight for TWO-THIRDS! That's what we need, then the great purging can begin.....

Nevertheless, stories of Boner Republicans perfidies continued to dominate the Drudge Free Press, leading to this plan of action. "It only takes 29 Republicans to deny Boehner a majority. It’s time to have that fight.

Let me be perfectly clear, as Dick Nixon was wont to say;
Robert Mitchell Jr's  comments have been a great addition to this blog, offering as they do a reasoned defense of the GOP wing of the Democrat Party, and vital discussion.  But this)! There was a reason why "Tokyo Rose" was tried for Treason. It is easy to lose the "will to fight", with all the current "Tokyo Rose"s, and their endless lies. We are winning, Life is getting so much better, and the Press is going down in flames. Keep the Faith ... we are winning, and Merry Christmas!

Aye Carumba!  I would have used Vidkun QuislingNorway's Benedict Arnold, or perhaps, Henri-Philippe Petain as more apt examples. And what is it we are winning?

Run-up to the election promises.

We got

We won Zip.  We have lost hope. Boner is a liar.  The Republican Party are waging total war against those of us teapartiers who want promises kept, and government brought under control.   Here's our operating meme, then.

"The British ministry have so long hired their gazetteers to repeat and model into every form lies about our being in anarchy, that the world has at length believed them, the English nation has believed them, the ministers themselves have come to believe them, and what is more wonderful, we have believed them ourselves. Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist, except in the single instance of Massachusetts? And can history produce an instance of a rebellion so honourably conducted? I say nothing of it's motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness.

God forbid we should ever be 20. years without such a rebellion.[1] The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independant 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure." - Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, Paris, 13 Nov. 1787

WWII; Last Heroes

The Last Heroes

There seem to be a never ending series of WW II documentaries, which is good because I watch them all. If you haven't watched  World War II: The Last Heroesdo. The setup is a bunch of very old (natch) Brit, Canadian, and US vets remembering what stuff was like in the last year of WWII (ETO).  The archive footage is blended with reenactments that are persuasively real.  In fact, I think the first D-Day  episode rivals the Saving Private Ryan invasion sequence for pure pulse beating drama.  Five Stars, and God bless these men.

ASIDE  I watched on Netflix, but you can cobble it together, or test it, here.   By the byand we've discussed this beforebut it's impossible to watch WWII film without thinking about how  AP, or CBS, et.al., would report a lot of it today.  As a United Press correspondent, Cronkite covered the landings in North Africa and Sicily, the Allied invasion of Normandy and the subsequent battles across France and Germany.  Reporting was controlled back then, but left to his own devices would he have declared the War lost, on June 7, 1944. and had endless interviews with bitter widows, and parents? Of course the answer is no.  This was was very much about saving Stalin from Hitlerto some (he said with very little hyperbole).
