If the F-35 was a ship, it would be the SS Jimmy Carter

       WHAT THIS GUMMINT DO

Living Down To Expectations ...

We’ve heard of significant shortcomings before with the fighter jet that’s supposed to be America’s future, but this is just as bad as it gets. The F-35 performed so dismally in a dogfight, that the test pilot remarked that the it had pretty much no place fighting other aircraft within visual range.

And to add insult to injury, the JSF flier discovered he couldn’t even comfortably move his head inside the radar-evading jet’s cramped cockpit. “The helmet was too large for the space inside the canopy to adequately see behind the aircraft.” That allowed the F-16 to sneak up on him.

And it’s even worse than a mere maneuverability issue. At one point, the pilot’s helmet was so big he couldn’t even turn his head inside the cockpit.

That’s according to a scathing report obtained by our friends over at War Is Boring that details the results of visual range air-to-air engagement tests between an F-35A and an F-16C. The F-35, which the US Air Force, Navy, and Marines are expected to rely upon, in addition to the air arms of militaries across the world for at least the next few decades, was supposed to be better than its F-16 predecessor in all respects. When Sharpton and Jesse were guest preachers ...

When I heard Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were guest preachers at a nearby black Jacksonville church, I decided to check them out in person and see what it was all about.

I sat down and Sharpton came up to  me, I don't know why, maybe it was because I was the only white person in the Church.

He laid his hands on my hand and said: "By the will of Jesus the Lord All Mighty, and the will of God, you will walk today. "

I told him I was not paralyzed.

Then Jesse Jackson came by and said: "By the Grace of God, and his Son Jesus, the Lord All Mighty, you will walk today. "

Again I told him there is nothing wrong with me.

After the sermon I stepped outside and Lo and Behold, my car had been stolen....

Roberts Deriliction

vichyssoise gummint

I'm avoiding the news for the next few days or weeks. Can't take it anymore.
BUT here's an excellent summary that pretty well sums it all up. Mark Miller

Since the New Deal, courts have permitted almost any legislative infringement of economic liberty that can be said to have a "rational basis." Applying this extremely permissive test, courts usually approve any purpose that a legislature asserts.

Courts even concoct purposes that legislatures neglect to articulate. This fulfills the Roberts Doctrine that it is a judicial function to construe laws in ways that make them perform better, meaning more efficiently, than they would as written by Congress.

Thursday's decision demonstrates how easily, indeed inevitably, judicial deference becomes judicial dereliction, with anti-constitutional consequences.

We are, says William R. Maurer of the Institute for Justice, becoming "a country in which all the branches of government work in tandem to achieve policy outcomes, instead of checking one another to protect individual rights. Besides violating the separation of powers, this approach raises serious issues about whether litigants before the courts are receiving the process that is due to them under the Constitution."

The Roberts Doctrine facilitates what has been for a century progressivism's central objective, which is the overthrow of the Constitution's architecture. [ObamaCare Ruling Is Judicial Dereliction]

I began to grow up after being introduced to George Will, lo these many years ago.  But Mr. Will is, alas, too gentlemanly for my taste.  After years of Sunday morning watching, I finally tired of  waiting for him to punch Sam Donaldson in the face and, while still wondering if he was banging Cokie Roberts, I stopped watching Brinkey Sunday and moved on to Ann Coulter. But the man is  smart.  And he has punched Judge Roberts in the puss.

Fat and Juicy Oatmeal Cookies

                                                           Oatmeal Raison Cranberry Cookies

Makes 16 to 20 large cookies

If you prefer a less sweet cookie, you can reduce the white sugar by one-quarter cup, but you will lose some crispness. Do not overbake these cookies. The edges should be brown but the rest of the cookie should still be very light in color. Parchment makes for easy cookie removal and cleanup, but it’s not a necessity. If you don’t use parchment, let the cookies cool directly on the baking sheet for two minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups raisins (optional)
1/2 teaspoon table salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
2 sticks unsalted butter (1/2 pound), softened but still firm
1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs

3 cups rolled oats
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Adjust oven racks to low and middle positions; heat oven to 350 degrees. In bowl of electric mixer or by hand, beat butter until creamy. Add sugars; beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a time.

2. Mix flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg together, then stir them into butter-sugar mixture with wooden spoon or large rubber spatula. Stir in oats and optional raisins (or cranberries).

3. Form dough into sixteen to twenty 2-inch balls, placing each dough round onto one of two parchment paper–covered, large cookie sheets. Bake until cookie edges turn golden brown, 22 to 25 minutes. (Halfway during baking, turn cookie sheets from front to back and also switch them from top to bottom.) Slide cookies on parchment onto cooling rack. Let cool at least 30 minutes before serving.

I've made these cookies 3000 times and, always, they  look like  this .  Nevertheless, they are gob smack good.  Best ever. You're welcome.

  • But the satirical flag was actually adorned with symbols of sex toys
  • Referring to the symbols, the reporter said it was 'very bad mimicry' of ISIS

Playing Catch-up

In the past, and we're talking 14 years here, a sudden sparsity of blog posting was due to miasma.  Now it's due, largely, by having so much to rail about that I don't know where to begin.  Okay, there is a certain miasma, perhaps, in that I really can't see a way to to reverse our country's slide into .. into something that was unimaginable even 20 years ago.  Where tyranny by a minority trumps the constitution and half the population applauds.  I reached a point where I was so filled with hatred for anyone I saw as part of the problem, aka anyone who was not apologetic for ever voting for any Democrat, that, not only was I miserable, but I made anyone around me .... erm, uncomfortable.  Odd as it seems, a turning point came when MoSup and I began watching the Blue Bloods series.

Every episode rang true
well, except for the Black mayor who is not only open to suggestion, but shows a good deal of common sense to boot.  There are no Democrat politicians in my experience who have those qualities (but it is the liberal wet dream, as witness the Black President in the 24 series, who, with the verisimilitude rating of minus-6, is more Thomas Jefferson than Brok Obama).

Anyway, at the end of each episode the Reagan family get together for a family meal, a wonderful model for any family.  It's here that — one reader here called it the "Greek Chorus" they toss around current events, ideas and philosophies.  I felt good after every episode; I think because so many of the values I grew up with were in evidence.

I did that video a month ago.  That's how far behind I am.  Maybe its the cork in the monkeys ass.

THE SPY IN HANOI HILTON

THE SPY IN THE HANOI HILTONuncovers the true story of POWs inside the Prison, known as the Hanoi Hilton, who created a high-level espionage operation that reached all the way to the CIA and the White House. This included sending radio transmissions to the Pentagon and President Nixon's White House during the brutal Christmas Bombings of 1972, signaling that POWs inside the Hanoi Hilton were still alive and that the raid should continue.

The spy network was led by James Bond Stockdale, an air-wing commander who was shot down on a bombing mission into North Vietnam on Sept. 9, 1965. He was one of the two most senior-ranking U.S. Navy officers imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton. Stockdale later rose to the rank of Vice Admiral, became one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the Navy, and ran for Vice President. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his secret communication network and for bravery in the face of torture. Former CIA official Robert Wallace calls Stockdale's spy network "one of the most significant activities in Agency history." [Full]

I missed this Smithsonian film that aired in April, and of course knew nothing about it.  One of the things that strikes me is, that while John McCain's capture is prominently mentioned, he himself is left completely out of the narrative here.  I find that telling.

The Confederate Battle Flag

Beating Dead Horses Because They Aren't Really Dead
should be, but they ain't

The Confederate Battle Flag
Clinton-Gore Sign, 1992
(actual)

This fairly sums up my feelings on the subject, evenbegrudginglythe "good neighbor" part (with the caveat that their current dudgeon is entirely due to ignorance).  And,  I must once again invoke  Shelby Foote.

Once the flag is gone, the left will advance to the next issue then the next issue, etc. They won’t compromise. There is no compromise. There is only conversion or censorship with the left.

But I also think if you proudly fly the Confederate battle flag and call yourself a Christian, you need to ask yourself how you are being a good neighbor to the black family down the street, next door, or on the other side of town whose ancestors were enslaved under that flag and whose parents or grandparents faced down white men in the streets waving that flag as an act of rebellion against voting rights.

None of this really matters though. Because the issue is now politicized, you might as well buy stock in companies that produce the Confederate battle flag. They’re going to get a lot of orders from people who equate raising the stars and bars with raising the middle finger toward liberals up north.  [The Confederate Battle Flag]

Mahjong for the mind

You Look Mahvelous

Luminosity is the best cognitive gymnasium I've run across, but our subscription ran out, and since it was a gift (free) I'm loathe to now pay for it.  I do cross word puzzles, and do MS Spades, Hearts. etcbut they really offer no challenge.  Mahjong on the other hand is interesting. I soon learned to master every level of Microsoft Mahjong, and then started doing the daily challenge.  This is where you get three (mostly timed) puzzles.  The lighting tiles are my greatest personal  challenge, because I have to control the fear factor as the clock ticks down and I've yet to uncover the detonator, so to speak.  For those who also play this challengee, the June 13 Lightning Tiles (Easy) and Match Attack (Expert) are driving me crazy.  You?

And there's this.

A few weeks ago I was suddenly  unable to complete any of them.  WTF?  It turns out that while I thought I was okay, I was in fact coming down from my poison ivy steroids and my body was all fkd-up. That's what happens.  Plus, I couldn't hit a ball over the short right foreld wall!  So Mahjong acts as  an early warning sign.  That's what I wanted to say.  I recommend  it.  You're welcome. Now where was I?  Oh, right.  One cup of suger and two cups of  cake flour.

I really hate this park ...

Hmmmm. Fort Marcy Park, anyone?

The plaque is real, and you can find it on a bench in London — but it’s also a hoax of sorts. Roger himself never actually existed.

When crazed shooters can't be linked to the Tea Party ... they still are

Jack finds himself, American Thinker and Conservatives in general branded with a "scarlet letter" of blame for the Charleston Church Massacre!

I had no intention of commenting on the recent shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina church.  There were two good reasons why.  One was that I have always found it unseemly to exploit a genuine tragedy, especially before the bodies are buried and the event gains some historical perspective.

The second was that the act was so anomalous.  In the highly racialized Obama era, there have been several black shooters who turned their wrath on multiple non-black victims – California’s Christopher Dorner, the Navy Yard’s Aaron Alexis, Omar Thornton in Hartford – but I could recall no instance in my lifetime in which a white shooter had done the same to black victims.  I was not sure what useful generalization I could pull from so rare a phenomenon.

Alas, the Huffington Post, in the person of veteran propagandist Terry Krepel, forced my hand.  [...]

Excerpts:
If the adultery charge against The Scarlet Letter’s Hester Prynne was valid, the charges against sinners today rarely ever are.  “Even when you have no idea you’re committing a hate crime, chances are you still are,” Mark Steyn opined after Canadian neo-puritans dragged him before that nation’s official inquisitors.

Neo-puritans exaggerate the sins of the targeted or concoct them out of whole cloth.  In either case, like Hawthorne’s Puritans, they publicly brand the sinner to render him or her, in Hawthorne’s words, “the general symbol at which the preacher and moralist might point.”

Indeed, if there is one shared ritual among the progressive subcults, it is the imputation of “hate” to the less enlightened.  And as those of us on the right know, there is no surer way of being branded hateful than by telling the truth. [FULL]

Stu Tarlowe and Skoonj  circus

A treasured  family friend—extremely affable and givingand who we know to have exceptional raw intelligence, cited that "Anti-intellectualism is Killing America" story on my wife's FB page recently.

America is killing itself through its embrace and exaltation of ignorance, and the evidence is all around us. Dylann Roof, the Charleston shooter who used race as a basis for hate and mass murder, is just the latest horrific example. Many will correctly blame Roof's actions on America's culture of racism and gun violence, but it's time to realize that such phenomena are directly tied to the nation's culture of ignorance.

This is what we're up against.  The left are so invested in their own convoluted beliefs and values that I see NO hope for any meaningful dialog, nor rapprochement.

Batts: More Baltimore cops likely to be arrested, forced out as result of reforms ...
More Baltimore police officers likely face arrest as the result of reforms in a department that requires "wholesale change," Commissioner Anthony W. Batts wrote

Batts, appointed commissioner nearly three years ago, said he inherited a department stuck in a "cycle of scandal, corruption and malfeasance" and that Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake hired him to reform the agency and rebuild community relationships.
We know a Baltimore City Police sergeant  (who quit taking the  Lieutenant exam because he's white, ahem) who was prominently involved in the staged riots.  This video says everything anyone needs to know about Baltimore's "cycle of scandal, corruption, malfeasance, and incompetence"  Call it erstwhile Mayor Martin O'Malley's legacy.
