Maryland Crabs

OMFG!

Boned Jello
Hucker brought over a bushel of the first steamed Maryland crabs of the season last night. I say without exaggeration that they were the fattest, sweetest crabs I've had in my life. Nothing more needs saying. Oh, this also happened to be Cinderella's very first taste of crab.  She's hooked. Oh, there is no comparison to the tasteless Louisiana crabs that we get around here during the off-season (not to mention that Louisianans BOIL their crabs. AWK!).

What Obamunists see:
People make their way north on Broadway Street during a march and rally for federal immigration reform and a protest against Arizona's controversial immigration law, in Los Angeles Saturday, May 1, 2010. Activists said outrage over Arizona's controversial immigration law "awakened a sleeping giant" Saturday as rallies demanding federal immigration reform kicked off in cities across the country.
What moderately intelligent people see:
Activists in Los Angeles use feigned outrage over Arizona's courageous immigration law to  unwittingly entice a million illegal Mexican wetbacks into the open where they easily could have been herded into tractor trailers, and deported.  Instead, outraged Americans view graphic evidence of the  illegal votes Barbara  Boxer is counting on to keep her in the U.S. Senate.

I bought this Acer notebook a few weeks ago from Woot.  It took some getting used to.  I have a 50" television, a 23" monitor, and the Acer 10+ inch screen was a bitch. The  wireless mouse didn't work for me, and I am not nimble with that touch pad mouse.  However, I finally got things squared away, so now what?

The only reason I bought it was for those times when I'm going to be in a waiting room, or some other place without a computer. [Aside: I showed it to MoSup, and she said, "Oh good.  Now you can take your sandbox with you." grrrr]  Anxious to get more utility out of it,  I got to thinking, hey, I bet there's a way to Kindleize this deal.  And, there is

Like the guy says, you'll want to flip the screen, and that's where the  free app called EeeRotate comes in.  As far as e-books, you can buy them, or you can avail yourself of the million free classics available.  Like from Diesel e-Books

I tried the Microsoft Reader, but there were so many restrictions I said screw it.  I settled on Adobe's Digital Editions reader, not to be confused with its PDF reader.  Will I ever actually use it?  Don't know.

For what it's worth.  You're welcome.

God does a better job

Today's friendly reminder
The environmental disaster was the cleanup ...
Goreons take notes

Six years after the cleanup, a study was conducted to determine ecological recovery in the sound. What researchers found was that the areas that were not cleaned were in better shape – with more wildlife and cleaner water and soil – than the areas that had been cleaned. The chemicals and high-pressure washing used to "clean" the area had destroyed the ecosystem in some parts of Prince William Sound.

This, I think,  pretty much captures the spirit of things.  From The Simpsons episode, "Bart After Dark."

An Itchy & Scratchy cartoon is interrupted with a news report that an oil tanker has crashed and spilled millions of gallons of oil on "Baby Seal beach". Lisa sees the report and asks Marge  if she can go and help save the wildlife. After some begging, Marge agrees and the two go to help out ....  . Marge and Lisa arrive at the beach, but discover that the ability to help the animals is reserved for celebrities. The two are put to work cleaning rocks, and soon abandon the job and drive home.

Like you, I get scads of examples of what I view as a mirror on the body politic.  This from Rick B (I'm sorry Rick, yours is a handle I just cannot remember) is a good example.

Like most folks in this country, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck in my case, I am required to pass a random urine test (with which I have no problem) What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.

So, here is my Question: Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them?

Virginia is 4 lovers - of freedom

Bull-Hockey Stick

No one can accuse Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli of shying from controversy. In his first four months in office, Cuccinelli  directed public universities to remove sexual orientation from their anti-discrimination policies, attacked the Environmental Protection Agency, and filed a lawsuit challenging federal health care reform. Now, it appears, he may be preparing a legal assault on an embattled proponent of global warming theory who used to teach at the University of Virginia, Michael Mann.

NOTE: Virginia places a four year term limit on its governor, but with people like Cuccinelli in the wings, no problemo.  When the time comes, I like Governor Bob McDonnell to take Jim Webb's senate seat.  And he will, too.

Among the documents Cuccinelli demands are any and all emailed or written correspondence between or relating to Mann and more than 40 climate scientists, documents supporting any of five applications for the $484,875 in grants, and evidence of any documents that no longer exist along with proof of why, when, and how they were destroyed or disappeared. [Oh, Mann: Cuccinelli targets UVA papers in Climategate salvo]

Speaking of Bob McDonnell, this will tickle the crap out of you, or should.  The overwrought lede reveals the mindset of Zachary Roth, the story's author.
In Latest Rightward Shift, McDonnell Lets VA Police Pray To Jesus

It's not long the worst thing he's done since taking office, but Virginia governor Bob McDonnell is certainly leaving little doubt as to who he's listening to.

McDonnell, a Republican, yesterday quietly reversed a policy, instituted under the previous governor, Democrat Tim Kaine, prohibiting Virginia State Police troopers from referring to Jesus Christ in public prayers.

"The Governor does not believe the state should tell chaplains of any faith how to pray,'' a spokesman for the governor told the Washington Post.

Today's fun suggestion: Google up "Bush Katrina," then use the "find and replace" tool on your text editor to swap "Obama" for Bush,  "BP oil spill" for Katrina, and "spill" for storm.   You get something like this.  [prompted by Obama threatened by heckuva glob]
BP oil spill: How Obama Blew It
Bureaucratic timidity. Bad phone lines. And a failure of imagination. Why the government was so slow to respond to catastrophe.
By Evan Thomas
Newsweek

It's a standing joke among the president's top aides: who gets to deliver the bad news? Warm and hearty in public, Obama can be cold and snappish in private, and aides sometimes cringe before the displeasure of the president of the United States, or, as he is known in West Wing jargon, POTUS. The bad news on this early morning, Tuesday, some 24 hours after Hurricane BP oil spill had ripped through New Orleans, was that the president would have to cut short his five-week vacation by a couple of days and return to Washington.

The president did not growl this time. He had already decided to return to Washington and hold a meeting of his top advisers on the following day, Wednesday. This would give them a day to get back from their vacations and their staffs to work up some ideas about what to do in the aftermath of the spill. President Obama knew the spill and its consequences had been bad; but he didn't quite realize how bad.

The reality, say several aides who did not wish to be quoted because it might displease the president, did not really sink in until Thursday night. Some White House staffers were watching the evening news and thought the president needed to see the horrific reports coming out of New Orleans. Counselor Bartlett made up a DVD of the newscasts so Obama could see them in their entirety as he flew down to the Gulf Coast the next morning on Air Force One.

How this could be—how the president of the United States could have even less "situational awareness," as they say in the military, than the average American about the worst natural disaster in a century—is one of the more perplexing and troubling chapters in a story that, despite moments of heroism and acts of great generosity, ranks as a national disgrace.

Bart Stupak

The Catholic Left

The Cult
Here we learn that the the editors at the Catholic magazine Commonweal belong to the Pelosi- Kerry-Kennedy faction of the Church; that Bart Stupak is a lying prick (again); and receive confirmation that Obama's executive order to keep Obamacare from funding abortion was a charade.
If the Commonweal editors believe that this executive order will prevent the public subsidization of abortion or protect taxpayers from funding the killing of unborn children, they are deluding themselves. As law professor Robert A. Destro has noted, for decades the federal courts have held (consistently with the 1977 case Beal v. Doe) that the Medicaid statute (and any other general law mandating “family planning” and certain other categories of service) must be construed to require abortion services unless laws passed by Congress explicitly rule this out. Executive orders sometimes have teeth, but not when they conflict with statutory mandates.

While two of our kids and their mates are trying to salvage Spain's economy, MoSup and me are once again parents.  Yup, we are blessed with having our one-year old granddaughter stay with us for 8 days.  Been about 75 years since I've fed a baby and put her down for her nap, but the skill came back in a rush.  Is there any sweeter smell than that combination of a baby's protective pheromones, and baby powder?  Anyway, those duties are responsible for fewer posts, which is good because I was getting somewhat bitter over you know who.  When she wakes from her nap, I'm taking her fishing.

Obamacare Jail

Different Stripes

Boned Jello

How silly can this get? The normally clear thinking Sen. Tom Coburn, you'll remember, went asshat a while back, sounding "like a' Kumbaya' minstrel in a Soho sub-station [Coburn bashes Fox, praises Pelosi].   Senator Tom charged specifically that FNC had falsely warned that Obamacare carried with it a threat of jail-time for the non-compliant.  He appeared on the O'Reilly show a few days later, whence the host made this statement.

"We researched to find out if anybody on Fox News had ever said you're going to jail if you don't buy health insurance. Nobody's ever said it." - Bill O'Reilly

One of those "media fact-checkers" (St. Petersburg Times) · , citing Media-Matters fer chrisake, decided to arbitrate, and came to this conclusion.  O'Reilly misspoke; Coburn was right.

So, it turns out that several Fox shows mentioned the possibility of jail. Some examples:

• Paul Gigot, Oct. 3, 2009: "If you don't pay up, the IRS could punish you with a $25,000 fine or a year in jail."

• Greg Mueller, a guest being interviewed by Sean Hannity, Nov. 10, 2009: "They're going to put all these people in jail."

• Andrew Napolitano, Nov. 10, 2009: "If you don't buy just what they say is right for you, the government may fine you, prosecute you, and even put you in jail."

• Glenn Beck, Nov. 12, 2009: "There has got to be some way to force everybody to have health care, right? It is jail."

Oh my.  But, guess what, besides who gives a rat's-ass?  Doesn't every law passed, at any level, ultimately carry with it a death penalty, forget jail time, if you don't comply?

"But Rodge, you getting killed in a shoot-out with the police had nothing to do with not paying a parking ticket.  It was because  ... - oh."

I'm not arguing that I have the right to ignores laws, just that jail is a penultimate consequence. Being a bit more realistic, go to a federal correctional facility and ask for a show of hands by those incarcerated for evading some tax, or EPA law, or possessing an eagle feather.    Obamacare funds the hiring of 16,000 IRS enforcers. 1+1 and Kumbaya, mofo.

UPDATE: After rereading this post I feel it needs some clarification.  Under Obamacare law, Americans who can afford health insurance but refuse to buy it will face a fine of up to $695 or 2.5% of their income, whichever is higher. As things stand, the IRS will in 2014 be charged with collecting the fines -  but will not have the power to seek jail time.  The agency's only tool is to to withhold refunds from taxpayers who decline to pay the penalty. So, just make sure you don't overpay withholding tax, something you should be doing anyway, and give them the finger.  That smoke-and- mirror amendment, BTW, was added at the last minute to counter the very charges made above, in 2009.    I'll argue that a law without any enforcement provision, is not law, and will be - must be - changed before 2014.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify. My Dogs get their first checks Friday.

Film maker Leni Riefenstah toiled for the National Socialist Party.  At least she was a  babe. Our  democrats rely on Michael Moore's cinematic legerdemain  for the same purpose.  That would be conditioning  hearts and minds to accept the joys of socialism.  Moore is not a babe , otherwise they are the same wretched person.   It didn't escape my attention that Moore was strangely silent, muzzled no doubt, during the 2008 campaign.  I'm guessing that Obama, already strapped to myriad radical leftist baggage, decreed a ban on Moore pork. Last night he was back, on Larry King's between-being-cuckolded show.  At least one person was viewing, since we have this account from Newsbusters.

On Tuesday’s Larry King Live on CNN, after guest Michael Moore joked about there being possibly 100 million Sarah Palin fans in America who "want to, you know, shoot moose from a helicopter or whatever else that they think that's cool that she does," King questioned whether there are really 100 million people who approve of moose hunting and then joked, "I think that there’s 100 million moose who’d like to shoot up to the helicopter."

Earlier in the same show, as the conversation focused on the new law cracking down on illegal immigration in Arizona, after making a Nazi reference by joking that the measures remind him of Hogan’s Heroes, he ended up charging that a "bunch of bigots in the Republican Party of Arizona" are to blame for the law. Moore: "I think it's the result of a bunch of bigots in the Republican Party of Arizona. That's, that's what it's the result of. And it's sad that they're behaving that way and it makes the rest of us look bad as Americans."

Did Sarah Palin ever shoot Moose, or any other living thing  from a plane, or helicopter?  No. Her support for "shooting wolves from helicopters," falls under this rubric.

[Disclaimer:  I hate Michael Moore's guts]

Fine Print

The hodgepodge of new taxes that have already or will soon take effect as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act may not all show up in the income tax tables, but their huge cost is still very real. This cost will become most apparent in lost wages and international competitiveness, and it reduces middle- and low-income families’ wages just as surely as an income tax hike would. These taxes break President Barack Obama’s promise not to raise taxes on families making less than $250,000 per year.  ObamaCare’s impact on taxpayers

Jerman v. Carlisle

Reader John B. alerts us: “If you haven’t already seen it, there’s excellent Overlawyered-type rhetoric from Justice Kennedy in Monday’s Supreme Court opinion on debt collectors’ liability under federal statutory law. Unfortunately it’s in the dissent

Wrote Kennedy:

[The Court's decision today] aligns the judicial system with those who would use litigation to enrich themselves at the expense of attorneys who strictly follow and adhere to professional and ethical standards.

When the law is used to punish good-faith mistakes; when adopting reasonable safeguards is not enough to avoid liability; when the costs of discovery and litigation are used to force settlement even absent fault or injury; when class-action suits transform technical legal violations into windfalls for plaintiffs or their attorneys, the Court, by failing to adopt a reasonable interpretation to counter these excesses, risks compromising its own institutional responsibility to ensure a workable and just litigation system
Oddly, Scalia and Breyer joined Sodahead in the majority. I don't care enough about it to research what this was about, but as a stand-alone declaration, Kennedy's is granite worthy, IMO.

My my.  In quick succession I tripped over two news items relative to assertions I made earlier today.  First, regarding the AGW industry.  It seems that Obama's Assistant Sec. Energy has a fortune riding on "green."

Surprising documents made available to this author reveal that Assistant Secretary of Energy Cathy Zoi has a huge financial stake in companies likely to profit from the Obama administration’s “green” policies.

Zoi, who left her position as CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection — founded by Al Gore — to serve as assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy, now manages billions in “green jobs” funding. But the disclosure documents show that Zoi not only is in a position to affect the fortunes of her previous employer, ex-Vice President Al Gore, but that she herself has large holdings in two firms that could directly profit from policies proposed by the Department of Energy. [Obama energy official profits from AGW]

Second, to my point that even if Dems lose control of congress, the same old Republican Party hacks will still be making policy.  And, lo, it took Jeb Bush just a few hours to make my point.

Jeb Bush speaks out against Ariz. law

Bush said he understood the anger that prompted the bill, but that immigration should remain a federal issue.

"I don't think this is the proper approach," he said.

The former governor recounted how, after he gave a speech Monday night in California, he was approached by a Hispanic man who was concerned about the measure leading to racial profiling and unfair targeting of Latinos.

Australia dumps Carbon Trading Scheme

Boned Jello
Why is this man smiling?

AFTER months of avoiding even mentioning an emissions trading scheme Kevin Rudd has formally dumped Labor's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme until at least after the next election, and possibly the one after that.

After months of refusing to defend or promote the answer to the greatest moral and economic challenge “of our time” or to propose an alternative the Prime Minister has simply put it off as an inconvenient political truth and tried to blame the Coalition and the Greens for obstruction in the Senate.

The simple fact of the matter is that Rudd over-politicised and over-dramatised the importance of an ETS, put all his political capital into one policy that would split the Coalition and provide a campaign platform and had no answer when it failed.

Rudd's insistence the Senate pass the CPRS legislation before the Copenhagen climate change meeting in December now looks completely hollow and Australia's stance friendless and isolated internationally. [Story]

In the Senate, there are already eight seats where Republican candidates have leads in the polls, Morris noted, including in Pennsylvania where endorsed candidate Pat Toomey is hoping to take the seat occupied by longtime incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter, a Democrat.

The TENTH AMENDMENT TASK FORCE

A Call to Arms

Boned Jello

IBD's Praising Arizona (In Border Battle) triggered this thought.

What did the nation get from the astounding 1994 takeover of congress?  From the very same Democrats who control it now?  The answer is contained within the second question.   Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Now, we're on the brink of (knock on wood, praise God and pass the ammo) of duplicating that feat, against a democrat party grown monstrous in their contempt of the law. Suppose we do grab control of both houses of congress?  What will we have gained, long term?  Nothing.  Absolutely nothing.   Because the Republican Party will be the same Republican Party it was in 1995, and democrats will still draw breath. But, there is one thing, one event, or series of events, that can turn the Obama occupation into the most salutary moment in U..S. history, dating even before the War of Rebellion. I quote from IBD.

Arizona's new law is a reminder that the states formed the federal government and not the other way around. One of the federal government's functions was to provide for the security of the new country against foreign enemies and intruders. At this, and particularly under this administration, it has failed miserably.

If the states, even one of them, which have thrown down the gauntlet stand firm, necessitating a showdown between the U.S. Constitution and federal usurpers, I'm confident the good guys will prevail.  I cannot envision what that will do to 70 years of court encroachment, and malversation.  A wood stake will have been driven squarely through the heart of this emerging  class of fascist dictators, and I use "fascist" properly here.

I know what you're saying.  Please, sir, can I have some more!  Yes.  Yes you can.

The most important thing we've done for the country and the world is health care.
Harry needs to leave Washington more often than once every six years. Here's the state's largest newspaper, The Las Vegas Review Herald Journal, discussing Harry's wondrous gift to mankind.
EDITORIAL: Snake oil

It'd be easy to say we told you so, but what would be the point? After all, anybody who argued that ObamaCare would actually reduce health care costs was either lying, wishfully naive or in possession of a newborn's critical thinking skills.

On Friday, the latest nonpartisan report on the health care reform bill provided more evidence for the obvious: The Democrats' massive federal intervention into health care will drive up costs and bleed the budget. [It gets worse]
If Harry loses as expected, I hope he, stripped of  influence, and easily indictable for scads of  real estate cons, and vote selling, will be.
