“ Rep. Michele Bachmann appears on Bill O'Reilly's show, and is told that she is "second to Sarah Palin in far left angst... They're after you now."

"I think it happened with a competing cable network that took an interest in me, and it's only grown," she responds. "Now, it's almost like I have personal stalkers, only they have Tv shows, so it's kind of an interesting phenomenon."

Bachmann also suspects that MSNBC has a "stereotype for women" in which she does not fit into.

Boundary Violations
Gun Politics in the Doctor's Office

Kristopher is one of the valued commenters here.  I like to think he's the ghost of Spoons, an erstwhile guardian angel who tried to save me from myself.  Anyway, his comment to the Pistol Packing Mama post triggered this one.

“ Imagine this scenario: you visit your doctor for back pain. Your doctor asks if you have firearms in your home. Then he announces that your family would be better off (especially your children) if you had no guns at all in your house. You leave the doctor's office feeling uneasy, wondering what guns have to do with your backache. Does your doctor care about your family's safety? Or instead, did he use your trust and his authority to advance a political agenda?

American families may soon find themselves in this scenario. Social activists are taking their war on gun ownership to a new battleground: the doctor's office.(1) The American Medical Association (AMA)(2), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)(3), and American College of Physicians (ACP)(4) are urging doctors to probe their patients about guns in their homes. They profess concern for patient safety. But their ulterior motive is a political prejudice against guns and gun owners. And that places their interventions into the area of unethical physician conduct called boundary violations. (Full)
”

My own physician and I crossed e-mails over his support for Obamacare, but I eventually saw in our exchange the potential for prollems.  Like pissing-off the waiter who will be bringing your food order.  He never mentioned guns however. Is there any aspect of society left untouched by politics?

Seven People Have Been Entrusted
With The Keys To The Internet

Boned Jello
Something I understand

Okay, help me out here.

“ The basic idea is that in the event of an Internet catastrophe, the DNSSEC (domain name system security) could be damaged or compromised and we'd be left without a way to verify if a URL is pointing to the correct website. That's when the holders of these smart cards would be called into action:

A minimum of five of the seven keyholders – one each from Britain, the U.S., Burkina Faso, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, China, and the Czech Republic – would have to converge at a U.S. base with their keys to restart the system and connect everything once again.

A minimum of five people is needed because each of the smart cards contains only a fraction of the recovery key necessary to set things right again. This means that no single person will hold all the power to resetting our little cyber world. [BBC via PopSci]
”

Burkina Faso?  Trinidad?  Tobago? WTFF?  I mean, this sounds like a fine idea, especially if it will override an effort by Obama to shut down the nets, but why the five-of-seven verification?  I'm prolly way oversimplifying, but my techno pea-brain sees this as the lights going out prollem.  Why the hell can't anybody reset the fuse?  This sounds like something I should hate\, but don't know why.

Tom Tancredo, a principled man.

principled - based on or manifesting objectively defined standards of rightness or morality; "principled pragmatism and unprincipled expediency"; "a principled person"
That definition of principled was, I thought, necessary before I spoke of Tom Tancredo as a principled man.

Boned Jello
Tom Tancredo- Principled Man

Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, indeed all professional Democrats are highly principled people.  Based on their life code anyway; - in politics, whatever it takes to achieve statist government ascendancy, to include lies, voter fraud, mayhem, criminal violation of the law, thuggery, anything! - is not just condoned, but expected.   Elected Democrats are the "made men" of politics.  For the rest of us, traditional standards apply.

Last week former congressman Tom Tancredo issued an ultimatum to two Republican primary hopefuls for Colorado governor, Scott McInnis and Dan Maes, unless they agreed to his conditions by Monday.
“

Those conditions:  They must commit to withdrawing from the race the day after the Aug. 10 primary if polls show the winner trailing likely Democratic nominee John W. Hickenlooper.

Republicans immediately denounced Mr. Tancredo, calling on him to rescind his threat and predicting his candidacy would spell disaster for the party's chances in November. But the way Mr. Tancredo sees it, he's doing the Colorado Republican Party a favor.

He says the Republicans have no chance of winning the race with Mr. McInnis, who's embroiled in a plagiarism scandal, or Mr. Maes, an unknown who was recently fined for campaign-spending violations.

"We're at the point where Scott is not a viable option," said Mr. Tancredo in an interview Sunday. "So I have a responsibility to the conservatives in this state to do what I can to make sure John Hickenlooper isn't elected."

If Mr. McInnis withdraws his candidacy after the primary, the state Republican Party can form a vacancy committee to select a replacement candidate, which, Mr. Tancredo acknowledges, "won't be me." -Wa TIMES

”
The public Tancredo is nothing if not  principled.  When it comes to protecting the nation against the Mexican invasion, none stood higher than Tom.  The American Conservative Union issued ratings for potential presidential candidates in 2008, and Tancredo took first with a lifetime ranking of 99 out of 100.  True to his word, at high noon yesterday Tancredo declared run against GOP.     Three cheers for Tom!

Back-Story

This is what the Internet was invented for
“ JFK may have been killed because of a movie.

He had Addison's disease, which would be obvious to any physician familiar with the disease, as it changes the appearance of the skin, noticeable at a distance.

Boned Jello
At the time, the only effective treatment for Addison's was large doses of the new miracle drug, cortisone, which could finally be inexpensively synthesized.

However, at the time, even the medical community (incorrectly) believed that large doses of cortisone would make someone clinically paranoid.

This was a widespread belief even outside of the medical community, because of the popular star James Mason's movie, "Bigger Than Life" (1956). It depicted a man taking cortisone pills who goes violently insane and murderous.

The last bit was the Cuban Missile Crisis, that made everyone very aware that JFK had his finger on the nuclear trigger. So with just these three elements, it would not be hard to guess that someone would want JFK dead.

President is ill. President is taking drug that will drive him violently mad. President has finger on nuclear trigger. One, two, three.

The NY Times Saturday compared the cost of America's wars, and concluded the combined Iraq/Afghanistan campaigns against fascist Islam are the second most expensive in history.  Daniel Halper (Weekly Standard) puts things in perspective.
“ But the real story is in the chart, not the accompanying article. The actual cost of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq is extraordinarily low, when seen as a percentage of GDP. Whereas World War II constituted 35.8 percent of GDP spending, and whereas World War I made up 13.6 percent of GDP spending, the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (or what the Times calls "Afghanistan/Iraq/post-9/11) made up only 1.2 percent of GDP in 2008. The chart helpfully compares this to other wars: It falls in between the Mexican War (1847) and the Spanish-American War (1899).

Now, in these comparative terms, it seems that spending for these wars is not nearly high enough, considering the enormous consequences of defeat in either Iraq or Afghanistan.

Federal judge says you can break  DRM
if you're not doing so to infringe copyright

“ So this ruling is pretty interesting news, as it constitutes a circuit split with pretty much the rest of the nation's courts, which is often a precursor to a Supreme Court challenge. What's more, the defendants here are General Electric, not hackers in black t-shirts or sketchy offshore Xbox-modchip vendors (theoretically the law shouldn't care if the defendant is a hobo or a billionaire, but in practice, billionaires usually get better precedents, and not just because they can afford better lawyers).  (BoingBoing)

DRM (Digital Rights Management ), as codified in the US by the  Digital Millennium Copyright Act is the spawn of Hollywood money copulating with lawmakers.  This comment to the parent Boing Boing article nicely sums things up for us regular people, so hooray for that judge.

“

Given the extremely restrictive DMCA wording, there are only two possible outcomes:

1) Nothing gets reproduced, ever, under any circumstances, even for promotion, except with the express payment of the promoter (in practice, promoters don't want to pay for every placement, and don't want trailers to be illegal)

2) Movie trailers become legally equivalent to pirating a whole movie, at which point everyone becomes a criminal, and ignores this silly law. (Anon)

Mexico braces for effects
of Arizona immigration law

“ Across Mexico, radio talk shows, blogs and the news media have turned Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer into a household name.

”

Boned Jello
Depression era reminder

  • That Mexico is feeling overwhelmed in getting their own citizens back gives us a real sense of magnitude of the problem our border states have endured.
“ Mexico's government has added more workers to its consulate in Phoenix to assist detained Mexicans. Migrants who have been deported say they're watching to see how the law is enforced before deciding whether to try again to cross the border illegally into Arizona.

"On the plane, everybody was talking about the law," said Ernesto González, a deportee who arrived here last week on a U.S. government flight from Tucson. "Everybody knows it's coming."

Arizona's law makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. It requires police to check a person's immigration status when the person has been involved in another offense and the officer has reasonable cause to suspect the person is in the country illegally. The check can be made only during the course of a lawful police action, such as a traffic stop or investigation of a crime.

The law also allows Arizona citizens to sue police departments if they feel the new law is not being enforced — a provision related to "sanctuary cities," where local government officials refuse to enforce anti-illegal-immigration laws.

The Obama administration and several rights groups have sued to stop the law from taking effect. The Mexican government has filed a "friend of the court" brief supporting the lawsuits. (USA TODAY continued)
”

Social Security E-Mail Fix

Your Social Security
Clearing the record

Rick B sent me an e-mail about Social Security that may be viewed HERE.  I knew some of what was presented wasn't true, and  was led by Google to FACT CHECK, which  (if Obama isn't involved) is sometimes accurate.  You can find their treatment HERE.  My interest in the subject will become apparent;  I've attempted  below to reconcile the E-mail with the Facts.

red text = edits

“ This is a little history lesson that you won't see in the main-stream media--now or ever. Make a copy and learn these facts--they're relevant!!! P.S. We need to "Wake Up America."

Our Social Security

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it. Be sure and show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or Republican.
Facts are Facts!!!

Social Security Cards up until the 1980's expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the message was removed.

Boned Jello
An old Social Security card with the "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" message.

As Advertised

1) Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He truthfully stated that participants would pay only "1% of the first $1,400" of income.  Not so prominently mentioned was the law FDR signed raised it incrementally in 1940, 1943, 1946 and 1949, when it reached 3 percent.

2.) Participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the Program,
Now 7.65% on the first $90,000

3.) Money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,
Nah

4.) That the money the participants put into the independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program,  and, Under Johnson the money was moved to The General Fund and Spent
No "Trust Fund" was ever established.  The plan was then, as now, a simple Ponzi scheme.
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.
Under Clinton & Gore Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Taxation of annuity payments began when Reagan signed  the Social Security Amendments of 1983  The back-story behind this, and other Reagan tax increases, like TEFRA, are separate issues, but Democrat perfidy abounds in their telling.

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put away' -- you may be interested in the following:

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.  There never was an "independent Trust Fund). See PONZI SCHEME

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Theoretically,  illegals are not eligible to collect SS benefits, which (O Irony)  may serve as a major reason why certain lawmakers [ahem] refuse to crack down on them. Why?  If not for the billions in payroll taxes that illegal immigrants pay into the system, using phony or stolen Social Security numbers, Social Security would already be bankrupt.

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the   Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

True.  Favorite Democrat election gambits ...
  • Claim Republicans will eliminate Social Security
  • Claim Republicans are racists who want to re-institute Jim Crow laws.
And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!

If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully sure of what isn't so.

But it's worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?

Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.

AND CONGRESS GIVES THEMSELVES 100% RETIREMENT FOR ONLY SERVING 1 TERM!!

My dad retired from the SSA administration in1979 after serving as Chief of Bureau of Hearings and Appeals. for several years.  These first hand anecdotes are useful insights.

  1. I listened as Dad told my Mom that [someone in the family] had asked him to find her ex- husband.  He wasn't paying her alimony, or child  support.  While it would have been an easy task to locate him via his Social Security number,Dad explained that it was expressly forbidden to use SS information for other than SSA business.
  2. He stated that Richard Nixon indexing Social Security for inflation was the worst thing that happened to SSA's long term solvency.
  3. He was approached by the Reagan transition team in 1980 to come out of retirement as a consultant, but was enjoying his leisure time too much, and declined.  I was disappointed because I saw in it a chance to meet Reagan.

ADA -GAH!

Another gift that keeps on taking
“     Compassionate government has recently rained new  rights and entitlements so rapidly that you may have missed this beauty: You have a right to be a colossally obnoxious jerk on the job.

If you are just slightly offensive, your right will not kick in. But if you are seriously insufferable to colleagues at work, you have a right not to be fired, and you are entitled to have your employer make reasonable accommodations for your "disability." That is how the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is being construed.

”

Boned Jello

George Will's tolerance for gummint programs is a bit too nuanced for me; and he did have a particular animus for President George H. Bush, but here we agree. He still  refers to The ADA as the most toxic legislation ever signed by Reagen's "lap dog."  Here's another prime example of  that toxicity.
“ Influencing Innovation: The Americans With Disabilities Act

Today marked the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a code of law that has influenced society and tech companies in interesting ways already, and is expanding to influence them even more.

One recent example: feds encouraged schools around the country, notably Princeton and Arizona State University, to drop the idea of requiring students to use e-readers, specifically the Amazon Kindle DX, until the devices were made “accessible.”

Accessible and acceptable e-readers would need features that work for students who are visually impaired, hearing impaired or have limited manual dexterity. TechCrunch
