Bobble Heads

Politics on Film, but This Time Leaning Right
“ According to Mr. Griggs, some prospective crew members on his new documentary, “I Want Your Money,” which takes aim at President Obama’s economic policies, said they would accept jobs on the condition that their names be left off the credits. Mr. Griggs suspects that a politically motivated makeup artist even tried to sabotage the movie by giving him a distinctly unflattering look.

I posted this trailer a few weeks ago, and now *gasp* The New York Times, which still refuses to review conservative's books, is talking if up.   "... its charm, if that word can apply to political documentary, comes from computer-generated animations in which bobbing-headed political figures, designed by Tom Richmond of Mad Magazine, try to school one another on the ins and outs of policy.  A good read.

 Jim Geraghty's O'Donnell Problem
I read  Jim Geraghty's column [The Campaign Spot] on NRO, and have noticed his one man effort to boost Mike Castle's (R DE) campaign.  But Rodge, what's wrong with that?  At first blush, nothing. It's how he's doing it, and who he's attacking in the process. Not Democrat Chris Coons, but Tea Party challenger Christine O’Donnell.  Here's a few recent examples:
Boned Jello
But it's his most recent [Just What Is Mike Castle’s Voting Record?] that crystallized things for me Lucy.  Here's Geraghty's reasons for pushing Castle.
“   The options for Delaware Republicans on September 14 are nominating Christine O’Donnell or Mike Castle to be their Senate nominee.

O’Donnell, if nominated, will have (cough) an uphill climb in a state where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans roughly 329,000 to 179,000.

Castle has consistently been corrupt led all polls and his voting history suggests he will vote with conservatives 52 percent of the time or so. If Democrat Chris Coons is elected and votes in a pattern similar to Delaware’s other senator, he will vote the conservative position 12 percent of the time; if he emulates current Democratic senator Ted Kaufman, he will vote the conservative position 4 percent of the time.

Over his 17 complete years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Castle has voted the conservative position, as defined by the American Conservative Union, about 52 percent of the time. In 2009, ACU scored Castle at 56. So how did he get that rating from the group last year?
”
Oh goody. Votes with conservatives 52 percent of the time, or so.  We're in Lincoln Chafee-Olympia Snowe- Susan Collins territory here. While we desperately try to drive the Nazi's out of Paris, Geraghty's (and others like him) solution is to replace them with a Vichy gummint.  Geraghty has not the faintest clue about what's driving the anger in this country.  None.  Christine O’Donnell for Senate.

The Wall Street Journal in an editorial today [The Delaware Senate primary is a test of political pragmatism]  rides with Geraghty.  O’Donnell has lost twice before? BFD; then is not now. Besides, I'm quits with political pragmatism; this is war, baby!

Toy Gun Licensing

Unlicensed toy gun

Australia to License Toy Guns

ANY ITEM that looks like a gun will have to be licensed under several changes to the Weapons Act being considered by the Queensland State Government.

Even guns made out of materials as unlikely as soap or plastic may have to be kept under lock and key if they could "reasonably be taken to be a weapon".

"If it looks like a gun and feels like a gun, it will have to be licensed," said a government source.

"We just want to know where they are."

”
Reporter Robyn Ironside then adds, "It is unclear how the draft affects toy guns." ?!?

I'm guessing that Queensland is Australia's Maryland.  Anyone?  If this isn't farcical enough for you so far, try this.
“ Failure to license an imitation weapon will carry a maximum $4500 fine under the proposals and incorrect storage carries a penalty of $750.
”
Just stab me in the liver and be done with it.  By the bye - did you ever look at Dillingers wood gun up close ?

Time to bomb the bombers

James Lee is Al Gore is Prince
Charles is the Unabomber

Damn!  I meant to copyright that thought.

What’s really depressing is that the philosophy expressed in James Lee’s (and the Unabomber’s) manifesto – which is also, incidentally, the philosophy expressed in Al Gore’s The Earth In Balance – is also the philosophy that is taught every day to our children in their schools: the world is fragile; human beings are a blot on the landscape; through our greed and selfishness we make everything worse; really it would be better if we vanished altogether and let all the lovely pure noble animals take over. [So much more; so very right]
”

Boned Jello

Largely ignored at the time was that amongst the crap collected from the Unabomber's squalid hut was one (1) copy of Al Gore's book, Earth In The Balance.  Quizzes like Ken Crossman's "Did Al Gore say it? Or was it the Unabomber?" were all the rage amongst free thinkers.  Al Gore and Unabum are unquestionably insane; Prince Charles never won the Nobel Peace Prize, and thus lacks the gravitas of a serious advocate.  Lee of course is dead, but every person who donates to the Sierra Club, or Greenpeace, or the Democrat Party was, and is a more serious threat to national freedom.  Carry on. Smoke'em if you have 'em.

ASME and Amazon.com Announce the Finalists of the 2010 Best Magazine Cover Contest

Ran into this yesterday, and of course my eye went immediately to NOPE and HATE.  First time I'd seen that New York Magazine (September 28, 2009) cover.  Sleuthing yielded the article, written by Philip Weiss, and that sent me off on this  tangent.  Weiss, it seems, owns the rights to Hate and Crazies stories (not a bad thing).

In 1997 Weiss, a contributing New York Times editor, was sent to Arkansas to do a story for the New York Times Magazine.  His mission: find the crazies causing Bill Clinton all this trouble, then expose and discredit them.  That resulted in The Clinton Haters - Clinton Crazy.

An odd thing happened however.

Weiss did find a bunch of them; like Larry Nichols, Hugh Sprunt, and Pat Matrisciana, "a film maker, who had  developed a monstrous view of Clinton as Satan's nephew."  He ate with them; drank with them; and reported what they said.  What he did not do is paint them as nut jobs who made stuff up.  In fact, Weiss later confessed that the crazies made a better case than did the Clinton apologists,  The New York Times was not happy, and as far as I know that was the end of his association with the Gray Lady. I've had a healthy respect for Weiss ever since, and would read his recent "Crazies"  article, except I hate Obama  too much. Love the cover though, and wonder why it's in the "Most Controversial" category, and not "Best Vampire?"

In 1995 Air Force One headed home with American dignitaries who attended the funeral of assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.  President Clinton, more intent on getting head from one of his flying bimbos (Eleanor Mondale was a favorite) I suppose, put Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole in the rear luggage compartment, never speaking to them.   Upon landing Newt commented on it, obviously piqued.  One hundred and sixty-eight thousand gallons of ink were used over the next  weeks by the media, calling Newt a cry baby.  They later claimed Newt used it as an excuse to "shutdown" the gummint in a budget battle.   Remember?

People the Left HATE; aka Americans

Here’s True Top 30 Conservatives the
Left HATES (And 5 They LOVE)

David "what's-in-a-name" Swindle posted this interesting deal on the David Horowitz blog. He thinks the Town Hall list of 100 Americans the Left Hates Most is too "now centric," with too much focus on people like Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.  Swindle's TOP 30 makes a distinction between "important conservatives who the Left might dislike," and those the left actually hates at a visceral level  His "True Top Thirty" list removes Glenn Beck as the #1 most hated, and replaces him with Dick Cheney.  I particularly like his reasoning on this one.  Here's a few of the TOP 30 Greatest Americans.

Town Hall 100 Conservatives Anti-Americans hate
“

24. Charles Krauthammer

Krauthammer remains perhaps the most essential conservative columnist in the country. He has the ability to completely reframe and recharge debates in ways that drive the Left insane. His pointing out that the BP Oil Spill was actually the Left’s fault is only the most recent example. I don’t know why Fox News doesn’t just give him his own show already.

16. Senator Jim Inhofe

To merely express doubt about man causing global warming is an unspeakable heresy. To those schooled in The Church of Al Gore, that humanity expelling CO2 into the atmosphere will kill us all is as settled as germ theory.

So to challenge it head on is unpardonable. Such a person is an enemy of the planet itself.

Is there anyone more prominent and more aggressive challenging the Left on this subject than Inhofe? I don’t think so.

14. Roger Ailes

Fox News has done critical damage to the Progressive Psyche. Before the blogosphere emerged as a crucial component in the media war, Fox News broke the leftist monopoly on television. The conservative viewpoint could no longer be marginalized; the “consensus reality” was shattered. And Roger Ailes is the one to blame for it.

9. Ambassador John Bolton

Just as Inhofe savages the Left’s deeply held religious belief of  manmade global warming, Bolton is the principal antagonist of another of the movement’s dearest illusions: the sanctity of the United Nations. It’s one of the central fantasies of the Left that all nations can unite in a governing body and solve their problems without violence. Bolton dares to reveal the truth of why this doesn’t work at all.

Is there anyone more prominent and more aggressive challenging the Left on this subject than Bolton? I don’t think so.

5. Sarah Palin

The reasons why the Left hates Sarah Palin have been laid out frequently by plenty of writers, including many at NRB. The answers are numerous and fairly obvious so I won’t rehash them here. What I will say though is that the trend we’ve been seeing with Palin recently has been very encouraging. While she may have been green during her vice presidential run she’s learning from many of the other people on this list very quickly. In the past I’ve been skeptical of the possibility of a President Palin but if she continues in this fashion then that might change.

Here's Swindle's 5 They LOVE

5. Alan Keyes
4. Michael Steele
3. George Will
2. Pat Buchanan
1. Ron Paul

I'll go with him, but disagree on two points.  Alan Keyes is dinged for (among other things) being a "birther." People taking the "anti" position here, without revealing what evidence they have, anything at all, that contradicts the "birther" position, have zero cred with me. And, I do not think Pat Buchanan is an anti-Semite. And shame on neo-com Semites for branding him as one.

“

For simplicity, let’s assume that the Fed’s policy instrument (now that the federal funds rate is stuck near zero) is the 10-year Treasury note. As an example, suppose the yield is 4%. In that case, it’s all but certain that the Fed, if it chooses, can do something to stimulate the economy and raise the inflation rate.

another fine mess

For example, suppose the Fed were to bid the 10-year note yield down from 4% to 1%. It would take out a whole slew of marginal noteholders in the process. Banks that had been satisfied with a 4% return would be unsatisfied with a 1% return and would lend more aggressively. Domestic investors that had been satisfied with a 4% return would be unsatisfied with 1% and would bite the bullet and buy stocks. International investors would be unsatisfied and would shift their investments into foreign assets, thus weakening the dollar and making US products more competitive. Households would refinance their mortgages and spend some portion of the increased cash flow. Others who previously couldn’t afford houses could now afford them, so demand for houses and home furnishings would go up. And so on. With such a huge policy action, it’s virtually certain that business activity would accelerate enough to reverse any deflationary pressure. Andy Harless

Conrad Dead

ASIDE

Pulitzer-winning cartoonist Paul Conrad dies at 86

LOS ANGELES — Paul Conrad, the political cartoonist who won three Pulitzer Prizes and used his pencil to poke at politicians for more than 50 years, has died. He was 86.

”
Even if you don't know who Conrad is, this single paragraph tells you everything.
  • political cartoonist for 50 years =  50 years of agitprop
  • Pulitzer Prize for political cartoons =  Nobel Peace Prize eligible.
Conservative political cartoonists needed the WWW to get a foothold.  Before 1995, or so, there were very very few;  now they seem to have achieved parity, if not dominance.   If Conrad and Herblock (Herbert Block)  are together in Heaven, they're no doubt part of a cabal working to undermine God. I pulled these two Conrad 'toons  with a random Google search.

“ You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 35.

For starters, researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy. Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier.

'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry.'

We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for awhile. An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10am. Old guys always get up early to pee, so what the hell.. Besides, like I said, I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.

If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser. Boot camp would be easier for old guys.. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and never saw a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training. Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet. An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head, or that pants are supposed to be around the hips, not the knees These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way. Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons, who know that their best years are already behind them. HEY!! How about recruiting Women over 50...in menopause!!! You think MEN have attitudes??

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!! If nothing else, put them on border patrol. They'll have it secured the first night!

“ Both the behavior of the American government and the Federal Reserve makes one thing clear: They do not see the solution to the US’s economic woes in a return to traditional American virtues. Obama is not calling for the unleashing of market forces, as Ronald Reagan once did during an equally critical period in the early 1980s. On the contrary: Obama, driven by his own convictions and advised by economists who believe in government intervention, has taken a path that leads far away from those things that catapulted America to the top of the world in the past century. - Der Spiege, via Hot Air

Tax Gambit

How Pelosi might save her majority.
“ We recall the Democratic Presidential debate when ABC's Charlie Gibson famously asked candidate Barack Obama why he favored higher capital gains tax rates when the evidence is that lower rates produce more tax revenue. After some back and forth, Mr. Obama's one word reply came down to "fairness." If you really believe the main job of government is to redistribute income and punish the rich for making too much money, then you don't mind raising taxes even if it costs you control of Congress. [Democrat Salvage Plan]

”
This, in my opinion, misguided WSJ Editorial notes up front that Pelosi's "idea is to return to Washington in 10 days and start a debate over raising taxes only weeks before Election Day. "  Swim with the fishes Speaker Hankey. Even if Democrats do everything the article suggests [keep Reagan's tax cuts, at least temproarily], it's too late.

Senate Numbers

Sabato: GOP to Take House,
Maybe Senate in 2010 Election

NUMBERS
Boned Jello
Drudge has this titled "SHOCK PREDICTION," but if you're surprised, you haven't been paying attention, and still don't know. To answer your unasked question:

“

If the Senate is split 50-50, who is in control? Has there ever been an even split?

If the voters were ever to elect 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats to the U.S. Senate, the party of the Vice President would be considered the majority party. The Vice President is named by the Constitution to be the President of the Senate [the presiding officer]. The Vice President would cast the tie-breaking votes on all the resolutions organizing the new Senate, including electing its officers and assigning committee seats.

In 1881, the Senate stood at 37-37, with 2 Independents: one tended to vote with the Democrats and the other with the Republicans. When Vice President Chester Arthur became president after the assassination of President Garfield, the Vice Presidency was left vacant, leaving no one to cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate. The two parties came to an agreement where the Republicans controlled the committees and the Democrats managed the patronage.
”

A better analogy, I think,  is 1980.  Reagan's sweep brought with him a Republican Senate, but the House remained Democrat controlled.  Didn't matter.  Houses Dems were so fearful of Reagan's popularity that House Republicans were able to steamroll them - for two years.  I see the same thing happening in a split Senate.  Plus, if Reid manages  to be one of those 50 Democrats, it will be an easy task to get him indicted, something that's way-way overdue.
