Electro Library

Electronic Liberry

All you need is a library card and you're in business. Sign in  with your number, and  have access to the books, magazines, newspapers, audio books, tapes, etc.  available in your local library.  Find a book you like, and you're sent to Amazon (there are other outlets) where they  send it to your Kindle (or tablet).  If the library's copy is out on borrow,  you can put a hold on it and be notified when it's available.  Just like the real deal.

The first book I borrowed was 50 Shades of Gray  because it was displayed in the popular book section, and I recognized it as a hot topic a few years ago.   Other than that, I had no idea what it was about.  It is a girl

Oh My
book, which means-given the contents-  it's a bloke book too.  Similar to the Nightstand pulp sex books of  your yoot.   Not particularly well written (IMO), but extremely graphic and full of ... well, everything.  I went through about three hundred pages pretty quick, then suddenly lost interest.  Evidently women today dream of being subjected to all things that are largely man fantasy to begin with.  Who knew?

The book I really like though is American Sniper
(I borrowed the audio book (sample listen available).

Gripping, eye-opening, and powerful, American Sniper is the astonishing autobiography of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle, who is the record-holding sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle has more than 150 officially confirmed kills (the previous American record was 109), though his remarkable career total has not been made public by the Pentagon.

It's narrated by John Pruden.  He has the Texas thing down pat (Chris Kyle is a Texan),  and has perfect pitch for manly men characters, and Chris Kyle is that.   I stuff my iPad into my sweatshirt and earphone it  every time I take a walk.  Doing a lot of walking because of it, and trouncing MoSup in Fit Bit (had 6400 steps by 7AM today).   Helluva book.  I'll be sorry when it ends.

Aside.  I went to the library to find out how it all worked. The lady gave me 2 sheets (typed both sides)  of various procedures and directions.  Couldn't get it done without them.

Capitol Dome damage is so bad, 'We're going to lose it,' warns Senator Shaheen (D NH).
“

Guess what?  The real value of the Capitol building is as a symbol of our nation's committment to honest government.  Sen. Shaheen.  Y'all have destroyed that almost entirely.
Lawmakers are rallying around the 150-year-old U.S. Capitol Dome, weather-whipped and torn open by acid rain, worried that if an 11th-hour restoration isn’t fully funded, its most important traits could be lost forever.
“If this work isn't done,” warned Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., “we're going to lose the dome, we're going to lose it as it truly, historically is.”

A big fix, added Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., is needed, “so that we don't lose these treasures forever.”

The two Senate appropriators are joining to help Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers secure the money needed to complete the $60 million restoration projection, set to go into final stages next month with the erection of scaffolding to surround the whole dome, just like that done recently at the Washington Monument.

The interior is also in need of restoration, and the Capitol Rotunda is temporarily closed as interior safety netting is installed to begin that $21 million project.

Didn't we just repair the dome?  What? Oh.  Just the statue atop of the dome?   Wow, seems like yesterday, but it was ca. 1993, when  "the United States Capitol Preservation Commission provided $780,000 in privately raised funds, which covered all project costs."

Quaint, that.

Kind of a slap in the face today though, to hear Democrats like Shaheen fuss about finding $81 Mil to restore the dome inside and out.  Hell, that's vacation pocket money for the Obamas, ain't it?  But this is what really pisses me off about Bedard's article.

"Capitol Dome, weather-whipped and torn open by acid rain ... ."

In the 1980's Congress authorized the most extensive (and expensive) study ever on the effect of "acid rain."  That issue was the linchpin of what became the "1990 Clean Air Act." In January of that year, I read in a science magazine that the study had been completed, with no evidence of acid rain. I kept waiting for this paper to be introduced during the debate, but it wasn't, and congress blithely passed that abortion of a bill, and Bush 41 signed it.  That Fall, 60-Minutes aired a show on the myth of "acid rain," as though the results had just been released.  And here it is again.

The State Dept. "Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, known around the Department by the clunky acronym QDDR, was created by Secretary Clinton in 2010 to "provide a sweeping assessment of how the Department of State … can become more efficient, accountable, and effective(serve as a chronicled paen to her Sec/State accomplishemnts,  in the runup to her presidency)"

[...] When ( State Department spoke-ette)Psaki announced that the 2014 edition of the QDDR is now underway, to "build on the foundation established by the 2010 review," Associated Press reporter Matt Lee asked: "Off the top of your head, can you identify one tangible achievement that the last QDDR resulted in?"
"Were there any of these that didn’t simply involve rearranging of the bureaucratic deck chairs or shuffling responsibilities between one bureau to another or creating a new level of bureaucracy?"

Psaki could not. "Well, Matt, obviously it’s an extensive, expansive process," she began. Noting that she came to the State Department after the first review was finished, Psaki said, "I am certain that those who were here at the time, who worked hard on that effort, could point out one."

"So I’m sure there are a range of things that were put into place that I’m not even aware of were a result," Psaki concluded.

"I won't hold my breath," said Lee.

Psaki's non-answer created an obviously embarrassing situation for the Department, and on Wednesday Psaki came to the briefing with an answer ready to go. "After the 2010 QDDR," she began: [Full Horror]

Next:  In his best "Drown me! Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please... Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch." voice, Byron York explains "Why Elizabeth Warren should run for president."

Every year since 1896, the Senate has observed Washington's Birthday by selecting one of its members, alternating parties, to read the 7,641-word statement in legislative session.  Delivery generally takes about 45 minutes.  In 1985, Florida Senator Paula Hawkins tore through the text in a record-setting 39 minutes, while in 1962, West Virginia Senator Jennings Randolph, savoring each word, consumed 68 minutes.

At the conclusion of each reading, the appointed senator inscribes his or her name and brief remarks in a black, leather-bound book maintained by the Secretary of the Senate

Here are 209 words from that address.

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice ?

And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. It is substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government.

The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who, that is a sincere friend to it, can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?

You don't know what Bliss is.

For the past 13 years, computer users throughout the globe have found “Bliss” in the same spot — a hillside of vivid, velvety grass etched against a Crayola blue sky brushed with clouds.

It's estimated a billion people from heads of state to scientists to poor shopkeepers in Third World countries have gazed into that storybook spot, so simple and vibrant in its imagery that many assume it exists only on a digital file  ... .

David Gregory in the Wood Shed

“

[...] What’s the matter with David Gregory? And why don’t people like to watch him?

I could have saved the honchos at NBC News a lot of time and trouble. The first answer is: David Gregory is a phony. The second answer is: He’s a jerk.
[...]
Gregory is the anti-Russert. His boorish behavior around DC is legendary, from his juvenile tantrums with the Bush press staff to his drunken radio appearances to his diva snit fits with innocent bystanders while filming news segments.

One of the most telling and notorious anecdotes involves Russert himself, who reportedly reprimanded Gregory in 2008 for going ballistic on a poor waitress while the two TV stars dined at a DC restaurant. But “Gregory still treats most of … the newsroom like s–t,” an insider told the Web site Jossip. “Amazing how NBC cares more about food servers than about the people who have to deal with Gregory’s arrogance every day.”

Since Gregory doesn’t have the intellectual heft to carry in-depth interview segments the way Russert did, “Meet the Press” producers have reduced substantive exchanges to a few minutes and larded the rest of the show with fluff and stunts.

That means: If it’s Sunday, it’s “Meet the Jerk.”

Why people hate NBC’s David Gregory-Full

When Gregory was verbally abusing Bush, I saw in him a then Dallas CBS affiliate reporter,  Dan Rather,  being similarly disrespectful of President Nixon.  The nation was shocked and upset by it, but CBS brass (Cronkite, in Rather's case) liked the cut of his jib.  It was no surprise then that Gregory was given "Meet the Press."  The Liberals who control our media are - all together now - arrogant, condescending, and utterly clueless assclowns. And wayyyyyyy left-wing.

Voter fraud

Have you heard the latest scheme by the one-party state of Maryland? Today, the State Board of Elections will vote whether to adopt Internet voting in our state.

This means they will be hiring software vendors to set up a “secure” website intended to facilitate voting for Maryland citizens.

I learned that in Montgomery County, for example – a County that prides itself on “clean” elections – the Board of Elections delivers the machines to schools a full week ahead of the elections, where they are guarded by SEIU union members. And then people wonder when the results on the machines don’t track with voters’ stated intentions?
If you think that is going to work, just look at the State’s failed health care exchange, a boondoggle that was supposed to be Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown’s signature “achievement.” Oops, guess he’s not talking much about the waste of $300 million of taxpayer dollars these days.

But this is more than just a boondoggle and a waste of money: it is an open door to massive voter fraud in our State.

View of Red Light District on C. Street, N.W., near 13th, with Griffin Veatch, who was showing me around. No. 6 Special Messenger Service, 1223 New York Ave., N.W.; he lives 1643 Cramer St., N.E. He said he commenced the messenger service at 11 yrs. old. Has worked all night a couple of years, and now works until 10 P.M. Is known to Truant Officers. Family has had trouble with him. Says he is 17 but doesn’t look it. Quite profane, but (apparently) not very wise about this district although he says he goes to these houses occasionally. Location: Washington (D.C.), District of Columbia. (Library of Congress)
Illustration of a perceived scenario of sexual misconduct in 1883

Tommy "Mann Act" Mann sent this delicious retrospective that he titled "Some things never change."  Actually they do change, a little.  Today, more often than not, it would be a male page sitting on Mr. Representative's lap.  And, there are no longer "close to 100 houses of prostitution" just east of the White House. Only 10, or so.

The article itself is about an area of D.C. once called the "Murder Bay;" a 'hood with all the tone and tenor of Jack the Ripper London.

Then the streets were unpaved, except certain of the principal thoroughfares; the houses were for the most part mean and straggling, while the moral atmosphere was almost in accord with the condition of the town itself. Gambling establishments, some of the highest order, and descending by gradations to dens of the lowest character, where life itself was frequently sacrificed on the turning of a card. Thieves and unprincipled men and women, as ready to cut a throat as pick a pocket, flourished and walked the streets in certain sections in open daylight, while at night they frequented the haunts of vice and selected their victims from among the unsophisticated without fear of law or justice. In those sections it was unsafe for any one with the slightest appearance of respectability to enter after nightfall. There were, of course, the respectable sections, and numbers of people lived here and mingled in society who knew little or nothing of the darker localities, except as they were brough to their attention through the newspapers; but to the people who saw down-town life, as it may be termed, after the town was buried in darkness, except for the straggling rays from dim street lamps or the light from the saloons and gambling places, Washington was a wild and weird place.

I've been around D.C. all of my life, sometimes, and never heard of Murder Bay.  I know about Bloody Point on the Cheasapeke, but not this.   Horry Clap.  I can find no mention of why Bloody Point os called Bloody Point.  Now I'll have to do that work too.  Stay tuned. Sheesh.

Obama's perjury

May the court please ...Res Ipsa Loquitur

Michael Shrimpton, who faces a Nov. 10 trial, also appears in a 2008 video that began re-circulating earlier this year on the Internet in which he claims to have been privy to shocking intelligence information on Obama’s origins. Shrimpton contends to this day that the CIA collected DNA from then-Sen. Obama and a grandparent, establishing that Stanley Ann Dunham was not Obama’s biological mother. He intends to subpoena from the CIA and British intelligence any records either agency may have on Obama’s DNA.
 [Full story]

A few months ago, Tom Marr, a WCBM (syndicated radio) talk show host challenged a caller who wanted Obama impeached.  Now Marr, who is nothing if not a solid Teapartier, insisted that the caller name one, just one! offense that  passes impeachment muster;  and then shot them down in order.

We all have lists, and mine is probably larger than most—and I disagreed with Marr—but that's not what this is about.  Sort of not, anyway.

The Obama birth certificate imbroglio boils down to one absolute.  It's not that Obama is ineligible because he wasn't born on US soil, or to an under-age mother without the then legal right to confer U.S. citizenship to a foreign born child.   All of that may be true, but it's arguable.  What is not arguable, even if Obama was born in Hawaii, is that over a period of years Obama has presented a series of counterfeit certificates of live birth.  As each in turn was shown to be counterfeit, it was replaced with the defect fixed. Again and again.

In 2011 he released a long form birth certificate.  It was immediately exposed by experts as being photoshopped.   There have been no responsible replies (Snopes does not qualify) to the myriad of highly qualified document analysts who have collectively left zero doubt that it is a forgery.

Obama's impeachable offense then—supplying provably false documents to prove his eligibility to hold his office.  Perjury.

That's all it takes. Ask Bill Clinton.

Where There's Smoke ...

What I See

“

E-cigarettes have become a source of consternation for anti-smoking lawmakers who quiver at the very thought of someone lighting up a tobacco product.  This knee-jerk reaction to the dramatic increase in the use of e-cigarettes in public is manifesting itself in places like Los Angeles opting to treating e-cigarettes as if they were tobacco.
The fear of second hand smoke amongst those who have waged a legislative war on tobacco is one of the guiding principles behind these governmental prohibitions with the City of Los Angeles even going so far as to prohibit using e-cigarettes in outdoor public places and parks.
But what is the truth about the vapor emitted from using e-cigarettes?
In order to understand this issue, one needs to understand that e-cigarettes do not involve lighting a paper wrapped tobacco product and pulling the smoke through into your lungs, as is the case with actual cigarettes.
Electronic cigarettes on the other hand are not lit, and are essentially little more than a plastic tube which turns nicotine into a flavored vapor that can be consumed by a user.  The vapor does not contain any of the characteristics of a burning cigarette.  Whereas a cigarette left burning in an ash tray produces a haze that lingers throughout a room or building, the vapor from the e-cigarette doesn't have the same effect, as it doesn't emit vapor unless it is being used by a consumer.
When being used, the e-cigarette vapor is only emitted into the atmosphere when the consumer exhales.  The e-cigarette vapor itself has been found to be primarily comprised of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, water and flavors.  This is an important distinction between the vapor exhaled by an e-cigarette user and a tobacco smoker.   Blah-Blah-Blah

Hoes in the Outfield
I think our great problem as a nation is a sense of  having no personal identity; a sense that we are really just a bump in a statistics table.   I think it explains the recent tattoo obsession;  a way of  expressing individuality, achievement and rank.   I think it may explain the over-the-top eco, vegan, global warming, and other silliness ne plus ultra.  We need God. We need a sense of mission.  Eric Hoffer observed that people with no sense of self worth will look for a movement to latch onto.  It will be their religion, and they willing martyrs in its defense.  That's what I think about this electronic cigarette silliness. People trying to leave a footprint in a pail of water.

JEWS

“The Jews are a peculiar people: Things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.

Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people, and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it. Poland and Czechoslovakia did it. Turkey threw out a million Greeks and Algeria a million Frenchmen. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese--and no one says a word about refugees.

But in the case of Israel, the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis. Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace.

Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.”

THE SENATE 2014

SENATE DEMOCRATS FORCED TO DEFEND MORE SEATS

A recent USA Today poll found that those opposed to ObamaCare were more enthusiastic about voting this November. In addition, a recent AP poll found that, since Obama's reelection, there was been a 10-point swing towards Republicans in voter self-identification. Today, 41% of voters consider themselves Democrat or Democrat-leaning, while 39% now say they are Republicans. Democrats had a 12-point advantage at the end of 2012.

Verily I say unto you; what good to win the Senate but lose our soul by electing RINO?

The Republicans need to pick up 6 seats to take control of the Senate. The party appears half-way there, with almost certain wins in West Virginia and South Dakota and a big advantage in Montana. Until recent months, most observers assumed that control of the Senate would rest on four deeply-red states; i.e. Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina. Under that scenario, the GOP would need to win three of those four contests to take the majority.

In recent weeks, however, the Senate battleground has expanded at the expense of the Democrats. Democrat retirements in Iowa and Michigan have made those states very competitive. A recent poll in New Hampshire, which is home to many transplants from Massachusetts, put former GOP MA Sen. Scott Brown just six points behind incumbent Dem. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. In Colorado, popular GOP Rep. Cory Gardiner is challenging freshman Dem. Mark Udall in the swing state.

The Democrat party is on the defensive in Colorado after two Democrat state Senators were ousted in recall elections last year as a result of their push for gun control. A third Democrat state Senator facing recall resigned, as her ouster would have given Republicans control of the state Senate.

[etc]
The GOP senate primaries are critical.  Where (true) Teapartiers are nominated; wins happen. And change happens.  For a few years anyway. Then they all ... you know, have to be replaced by true Teapartiers themselves. Say Amen.
