Father's Day 2012

Father's Day Father's Day 2012h Yesterday was maybe the best Father's Day ever since my own died in 1998.  The plan was to have crabs, but when we tried to get some- there were none to be had! Anywhere. This is a first, in my experience.  With the idea  that I wasn't going to have to cook squashed, I set about doing chicken wings, Italian sausage/peppers and onions, and pizza.  The real surprise was that for the first time since Christmas we were all together.  We had expected that only my daughter's family would be able to make it, but at the last minute Greep and Joe said they were coming.  Then, everyone showed up.  It was a perfect day, weather wise, and I most especially liked the card (roll-over) my granddaughter Lilly filled out (her words, mom's handwriting- BTW,it's  brown hair and brown eyes).  I'll remember this day.  Oh,  this is what MoSup gave me.  For all the hard work I did becoming a father.  Calculated at about 2 mintes, 38 seconds.

Back in 1992 the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff held a "Strategy Essay Competition." The winner was a National War College student paper entitled, "The Origins of the American Military Coup of 2012." Authored by Colonel Charles J. Dunlap, Jr. the paper is a well documented, "darkly imagined excursion into the future." The ostensibly fictional work is written from the perspective of an imprisoned senior military officer about to be executed for opposing the military takeover of America, a coup accomplished through "legal" means. The essay makes the point that the coup was "the outgrowth of trends visible as far back as 1992," including "the massive diversion of military forces to civilian uses," particularly law enforcement. I skimmed the first few pages and usually get bored and move on. Article 1, Sec. 8 of the Constitution, which enumerates the power of Congress, states that "Congress shall have the Power To... establish an [sic] uniform Rule of Naturalization." Congress has passed numerous laws pertaining to immigration and naturalization, including laws requiring the deportation of illegals. The role of the President, according to Article II, Sec. 3, is to "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed." Obama's refusal to execute Congress's immigration laws (or, for that matter, Congress's Defense of Marriage Act) is an impeachable offense. Article II, Sec. 4 states that the President "shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for... Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors." The deliberate failure to enforce valid immigration law and allow hordes of foreigners to live and work in the U.S. is, arguably, "treason," and doing so in an election year to appease Hispanic voters could certainly be considered "bribery." In theory, Obama could exercise his power in Article II, Sec 2. to "grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States" and offer a blanket pardon for all violators of immigration law. He's not doing that, because he'd certainly lose in November if he did. He needs a sharper, more cogent message with some memorable lines. I ain't walking my criticism back  This is beyond lacking objectivity. It signals that this journalist has passed into another plane.  One where blatant sycophancy is the given standard, and objectivity requires explication. Listen to him.  It never crosses his mind that he has fouled —   do journalists have a Hippocratic oath equivalent?  To observe some code of professionalism? To at least do no harm?  Goldberg's observation in spades. The second is HBO's apology for "putting George W. Bush's head on stake in 'Game of Thrones'"  This is more of the same.  Time Warner (HBO) are apologizing for slipping up.  Forgetting that some of their (paying) viewers actually voted for Bush, twice, and think he was by and large a decent man.  HBO's (indeed, Time Warner's) lock-step liberal  workplace culture means that thought never entered their brain holes.  I suspect that a memo, reminding them about cable viewers deciding how to cut expenses, ahem,  may have played some role in this mea culpa. I don't know what's in the future, but I do sense something extraordinary in the air.  I think Obama's entire house of cards, and that certainly includes the news and culture media, is near collapse.  Could be the Democrat's 1974 in reverse.  Only worse. Death of a Skillet

TECHNO THRILLS                       Death of a skillet You crack me up This skillet may have been one my granny brought over from England in 1914, or so.  It was definitely the skillet my mom would have used to make my dad's last breakfast before he shipped off for France in Jan 1945.  It is my absolute favorite,  better than any of the designer pans I've collected over the years.  Properly season it cleans up like Teflon, heats evenly and holds the heat.  It takes a manly wrist to flip flap jacks, but you can. It took me, then, just 30 minutes to order this.  I didn't think it was possible to abuse an iron skillet like this, but ... . I was making pancakes on the  induction cooktop (discussed here), and heard a pop!  Didn't notice anything,except every pancake was burned on one particular area.  When I look closely I could see a red hot spot moving across the pan as it continued cracking.  Horry Clap!  What evidently happened is we got a new stove top, which center burner (22,000 BTU) carried a warning that it could melt porcelain. Blah-blah- blah. One of the first things I noticed is that oil was collecting under that burner, leaving nasty carbon spots that were the devil to clean.  I took special care not spill oil, but the problem persisted.  Where was that oil coming from!!?  I told MoSup that it had to be oil soaked into the pan over those many years.  The seasoning that me it so easy to use and clean.  I was right.  So, when I put it on the induction cooktop, at a setting of "6" (highest), while I got my stuff together, the last ounce of life was evidently drained from her. I'm keeping the old one to use as a backstop,  so I can target practice with my S&W .22 from my La-Z-Boy.

WHAT GUMMINT DO          West Virginia Diploma Test - 1931 Jodi Lou sent me this 1931 West Virginia Elementary School Diploma Test.  You can download the entire thing (,pdf) HERE.  Of course it will elicit the usual comparisons between then and now; the older you are the harsher the comparison.  But, this is what struck me the most.  Look at the Geography section.  The emphasis on the local economy and West Virginia itself hearkens back to a time when people saw themselves as citizens of their state first, and Americans second.  When Robert E. Lee was offered command of the Army of the Potomac in 1861,  the Virginian rejected the command  on the day after Virginia seceded.   It was with Virgina, he felt, that his sacred honor dictated he must follow.  And what a wonderful notion it was, federalism.  It meant that if the state you lived in wasn't being governed to your satisfaction, you could vote with your feet and move to another. It was what the framers anticipated. All that ended with the election of FDR in 1932. Yes, you can still  vote with your feet, but to little avail, since the Federals and their courts dictate what the states may, or may not do.    We have chained ourselves to a central government, so that today we are reduced to debating  passage of New Jersey Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s  “21st Century WPA Act” to reinstate the FDR's New Deal employment program.  Laut's estimated cost  —   through 2013?  — $250 billion!   I am positive Lautenberg would have failed this West Virginia test.
