Portman?

JUMP?

Res Ipsa Loquitur

“Let’s just eliminate the drama and suspense right now. Romney is going to pick Rob Portman,” declared the Daily Beast’s Mark McKinnon, a political strategist who has worked for Republicans and Democrats.

McKinnon is not alone in his prediction. In recent weeks, Portman has been the name making the rounds as the top choice in the Romney VP rumor mill.

Let's go right to the bottom line.  While Portman has many positives, so to did Bush 41 in 1980, ahem.

bottom line
  • Res Ipsa Loquitur
Portman, who notes that he owns hybrid cars, is an advocate of tapping various energy sources. He’s also voted to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

  • “As a U.S. Senator, Rob will champion policies that recognize and harness the power of Ohio’s natural resources – including natural gas, coal, solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, oil, and bio-mass,” his Senate campaign energy plan states.

  • In 2000, Portman voted for implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meant to fight global warming by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide. The protocol has not been ratified by the U.S.

  • Portman authored the Tropical Forest Conservation Act, a piece of legislation the Bush White House described as a “program [that] enables eligible low and middle income countries to substitute some portion of their debt obligations to the United States for domestic tropical forest conservation and protection activities.”

  • Portman also voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, newly structured by Joe Biden and offering  and increased number of visas to illegal-alien victims and offers specific protections of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender victims.

I'm not going to hold anyone to 100% compliance with my standard (that person does not exist, which is not an entirely bad thing), but there are hot button issues. One is embracing the idea of AGW (man caused climate change).  Anyone that does is dispensing nostrums for political gain, or so abjectly thick headed as to be unfit to serve. Since Romney's  own shifting positions on the subject fall under that rubric, I suppose it's a moot point.

In contempt of congress - what do it mean?

Obama grants 11th-hour Holder executive privilege request

Res Ipsa Loquitur

The question on everyone's lips is — so what does it mean if he's found in contemptby vote of the full House?  Predictably the law is difficult for the layman to understand.  For instance (from Wikipedia)

.Under this process, the procedure for holding a person in contempt involves only the chamber concerned. Following a contempt citation, the person cited is arrested by the Sergeant-at-Arms for the House or Senate, brought to the floor of the chamber, held to answer charges by the presiding officer, and then subjected to punishment as the chamber may dictate (usually imprisonment for punishment reasons, imprisonment for coercive effect, or release from the contempt citation).

But then, under "Statutory Proceedings," and after this Wikipedia citation —
Res Ipsa Loquitur
This article contains weasel words: vague phrasing that often accompanies biased or unverifiable information. Such statements should be clarified or removed. (July 2008)

we read:

.Following a contempt citation, the presiding officer of the chamber is instructed to refer the matter to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia;[9] according to the law it is the "duty" of the U.S. Attorney to refer the matter to a grand jury for action.

We have one instance of an Attorney General of the United States being held in contempt.

Person Subcommittee/Committee Ultimate Disposition
Janet Reno (Democrat),
Attorney General
6 August 1998, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Documents in question were revealed during the impeachment of President Clinton.

That would be a satisfactory outcome here, although I won't hold my breath. In the final analysis, Holder's and Obama's culpability in this effort (F&F) to stage events as a precursor to imposing gun control on us,  is manifestly unmistakable.

Voting with my feet

Voting with My Feet in Massachusetts

Res Ipsa Loquitur

One of the things I'll miss about Massachusetts is the revolving opportunity to vote against John Kerry every few years.  For a while, of course, I had the privilege of voting against Ted Kennedy as well, and if I had lived a few towns to the south, I could have voted against Barney Frank, too.

There is something very satisfying about voting against extremely bad people.  The rest of the country gets to see our liberal hacks only in the news.  In Massachusetts, I proudly voted against them.

In this state, you'll quickly lose your mind if you start looking for candidates you actually like.  On the rare occasions when Massachusetts elects a non-Democrat, such as Mitt Romney or Scott Brown, it is always Mitt Romney or Scott Brown.  Massachusetts has an astonishing number of execrable politicians, and no good ones.  Mitt Romney may or may not be a real conservative now, but he wasn't one back then.  To the degree that he is now a conservative, it happened after he got out of Boston.

Scott Brown, of course, is the most liberal Republican in the Senate.  Technically, I voted for him, but in my heart I was voting against Martha Coakley, his opponent.  It was about 30 degrees that day ... Read more:

I found this article extremely cathartic.  The disquieting thing is, that while Mr.T.S. Weidler  did vote with his feet, he will still find his daily life plagued by laws those Massachusetts booboisie  have blanketed us all with in this era of  borderless federal smothering.  Or something.

So it's Katie Bar The Door! Right?

GOP Rep. Darrell Issa said his face-to-face meeting Tuesday with Attorney General Eric Holder failed to produce the documents requested for the congressional investigation into the Justice Department’s botched Fast and Furious gun walking operation and suggested he needs them by Wednesday morning to stop a scheduled vote to put Holder in contempt of Congress.

The Capitol Hill meeting was called for late Monday night by Holder.

Well that's it for you Holder!  If you don't bring this documents in tom- what?  WTF!?!

Issa told reporters after the roughly 20-minute meeting that Holder instead briefed them on the documents in lieu of delivering them and suggested he might delay the contempt vote, called for because the department has not responded to subpoena requests for the additional information.

“The deadline will always move to the last minute,” said Issa, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. “We're not looking to hold people responsible. We're looking for document production.[Full]

We'll cite you for contempt if you don't produce the files.  That is of course unless you don't present the files, then we'll start over.. You're quacking like a duck Mr, Issa ...

For the past, oh, maybe a month, my computer would just up and reboot about every 3-4 days.  Lately it's bee every 3-4 hours, and today was a nightmare.  Yes. I did have a svhost-demon problem, which explains why the Windows update wouldn't install.  I have no idea about the other.  The last time it shut down it took about 2 hours for Microsoft and HP to get it to boot (after a System  Retore).  If  it does it again, I'll have to think there's a hardware failure.  Wears you out man.  If I go missing this time look out the window.  There'll be smoke.

Res Ipsa Loquitur

The media appear to be working their way up to a full-on hand-wringing over the news that the kind of people who use "Does this taste like Rohypnol to you?" as a pickup line have discovered social media "location apps". Wow. Who could have seen that coming?

The internet itself has already made dodging stalkers or creepy exes a colossal pain in the butt, at least for those of us who remember the good old days of 'move and get an unlisted phone number and you're done,' but the idea of voluntarily tagging yourself like a migrating harp seal? Unbelievable.

When I first heard of these apps that would basically broadcast your age, sex, relationship status, favorite color, GPS location, and how long you'd been standing there in the bar parking lot fumbling in your purse for your car keys, I couldn't believe ...

There's Google Mail; speed cams; traffic light cams; street surveillance cams; automobile "black boxes;" Face Book; People Search and Public Information Search Engines; Google Street; Google Earth; surveillance drones;  blah blah blah.

Maybe someone can find the quote for me, I've tried and failed, but the gist is "they'll take your freedom and you'll pay them to do it."  Because that's what's happened.  Remember, pick any technology you want, and the government is using it.  And with this lot, that's a very.very bad thing.

By the by. when I was single I took roofies at the disco.  Way overrated.  Didn't get me anywhere but a bed on the sidewalk.

Islam, where you "sleep wit militias"

As a teenager Ali Bahkti served in Iran's Revolutionary Guard .  While on a suicide assignment to blow up an Israeli disco, Ali converted to Christianity.  Ahem.  Anyway, he now lives in St. Louis,  and is active in church life "spreading the gospel.".  Of course we all know the penalty for leaving the crime family known as Islam, don't we?  That's right.  Both  Bahkti and his pastor Mike Salazar have been notified, via post from Tehran, that they have been marked for death.  Fatwa'd.

Even though the two men now live under the constant fear of death, they say they will not stop preaching Christianity.

“I’m doing it for the kingdom of God,” Bakhti said.

“Even if you die doing it,” his pastor added.

Salazar has passed the letter on to the F.B.I. However, the agency wouldn’t confirm to KTVI whether they are investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, in Rio Grande Valley, Texas ..... Talal Nimer shot his estranged wife, his daughter and her boyfriend.  Talal admitted to police " that he didn't like that his daughter was dating someone who's not Muslim."  This practice of "honor killing" is of course sanctioned by Sharia law, but police say it is not classified as attempted "honor killing"

Robert Conquest once asked the Russo-Hungarian historian Tibor Szamuely why Stalin had ordered his old friend Marshal Yegorev killed. Szamuely replied: “Why not?” It was a better explanation than most Sovietologists could muster.
Michael Weiss asks, and answers Why the West misreads Putin on Syria, and the answer seems to be Why not?” Not since FDR was so besotted by the muderous Joseph Stalin (calling him "Uncle Joe!") has  US President so misread evil as did "W" with Putin (Pootie -Poo)!

Weiss 's analysis (a good read) summation -

.The truth is this. Putin’s only criticism of Assad is that Assad has not already destroyed this annoying little revolution and convinced the world that he is doing so as part of of the global war on terror. ... When Russia sounds more conciliatory to the Western position, it is to buy more time for Damascus. If Putin has one lament, it is only that Bassel al-Assad, Bashar’s smarter older brother, died in a car crash in 1994. Thus was a perfectly good client state entrusted to a combination of Fredo Corleone and Forrest Gump. If Putin ever did accede to a “transition” of power, you can be sure the man to take Bashar’s place would be more like Bassel, and like Vladimir.
