Charles Loxton

Charles Loxton
Kim du Toit

When he died, late one night, there was no fuss, no emergency, no noise—he just took one breath, and then no more. He died as he had lived, quietly and without complaint. From him, I developed the saying, “The mark of a decent man is not how much he thinks about himself, but how much time he spends thinking about others.”

In Memoriam.

Charles Loxton was a small man, no taller than 5’6”, and was born in 1899. This means that when he fought in the muddy trenches of France during the First World War, he was no older than 17 years old—Delville Wood, where he was wounded, took place in July 1916. Seventeen years old. That means he would have been a little over sixteen when he enlisted.  In other words, Charles must have lied about his age to join the army—many did, in those days, and recruiting officers winked at the lies. After all, the meat grinder of the Western Front needed constant replenishment, and whether you died at 17, 18 or 19 made little difference.

Why did he do it? At the time, propaganda told of how the evil Kaiser Wilhelm was trying to conquer the world, and how evil Huns had raped Belgian nurses after executing whole villages. Where Charles lived as a young boy, however, the Kaiser was no danger to him, and no German Uhlans were going to set fire to his house, ever.

But Charles lied about his age and joined up because he felt that he was doing the right thing. That if good men did nothing, evil would most certainly win. It’s not as though he didn’t know what was coming: every day, the newspapers would print whole pages of casualty lists, the black borders telling the world that France meant almost certain death.  The verification could be found in all the houses’ windows which had black-crepe-lined photos of young men, killed on the Somme, in Flanders, in Ypres, and at Mons. He would have seen with his own eyes the men who returned from France, with their missing limbs, shattered faces and shaky voices. He would have heard stories from other boys about their relatives coming back from France to other towns—either in spirit having died, or else with wounds so terrible that the imagination quailed at their description. He would have seen the mothers of his friends weeping at the loss of a beloved husband. Perhaps it had been this man and not his father who had taught him how to fish, or how to shoot, or how to cut (from the branches of a peach tree) a “mik” (the “Y”) for his catapult.

But Charles, a 16-year-old boy, walked out of his home one day and went down to the recruiting center of the small mining town, and joined the Army. When years later I asked him why he’d done it, he would just shrug, get a faraway look in his blue eyes, and change the subject. Words like duty, honor, country, I suspect, just embarrassed him.  But that didn’t mean he was unaware of them.

So Charles joined the Army, was trained to fight, and went off to France. He was there for only four months before he was wounded.  During the attack on the German trenches at Delville Wood, he was shot in the shoulder, and as he lay there in the mud, a German soldier speared him in the knee with his bayonet, before himself being shot and killed by another man in Charles’ squad. At least, I think that’s what happened—I only managed to get the story in bits and pieces. But the scars on his body were eloquent witnesses to the horror—the ugly cicatrix on his leg, two actually (where the bayonet went in above the knee and out below it), and the star-shaped indentation in his shoulder. The wounds were serious enough to require over a year’s worth of extensive rehabilitation, and they never really healed properly. But Charles was eventually passed as fit enough to fight, and back to the trenches he went. By now it was early 1918—the Americans were in the war, and tiny, limping Private Charles Loxton was given the job as an officer’s batman—the man who polished the captain’s boots, cleaned his uniform, and heated up the water for his morning shave every day. It was a menial, and in today’s terms, demeaning job, and Charles fought against it with all his might. Eventually, the officer relented and released him for further line service, and back to the line he went.

Two months later came the Armistice, and Charles left France for home, by now a grizzled veteran of 19. Because he had been cleared for trench duty, he was no longer considered to be disabled, and so he did not qualify for a disabled veteran’s pension. When he got back home, there were no jobs except for one, so he took it. Charles became, unbelievably, a miner. His crippled knee still troubled him, but he went to work every day, because he had to earn money to support his mother, by now widowed, his younger brother John and sister Josephine. The work was dangerous, and every month there’d be some disaster, some catastrophe which would claim the lives of miners. But Charles and his friends shrugged off the danger, because after the slaughter of the trenches, where life expectancy was measured in days or even hours, a whole month between deaths was a relief.

But he had done his duty, for God, King and country, and he never regretted it. Not once did he ever say things like “If I’d known what I was getting into, I’d never have done it.” As far as he was concerned, he had had no choice—and that instinct to do good, to do the right thing, governed his entire life.

At age 32, Charles married a local beauty half his age. Elizabeth, or “Betty” as everyone called her, was his pride and joy, and he worshipped her his whole life. They had five children. Every morning before going to work, Charles would get up before dawn, and make a cup of coffee for Betty and each of the children, putting the coffee on the tables next to their beds. Then he’d kiss them, and leave for the rock face.  Betty would die from multiple sclerosis, at age 43.

As a young boy, I first remembered Charles as an elderly man, although he was then in his late fifties, by today’s standards only middle-aged. His war wounds had made him old, and he had difficulty climbing stairs his whole life. But he was always immaculately dressed, always wore a tie and a hat, and his shoes were polished with such a gloss that you could tell the time in them if you held your watch close.

Charles taught me how to fish, how to cut a good “mik” for my catapult, and had watched approvingly as I showed him what a good shot I was with my pellet gun. No matter how busy he was, he would drop whatever he was doing to help me—he was, without question, the kindest man I’ve ever known.

In 1964, Charles Loxton, my grandfather, died of phthisis, the “miner’s disease” caused by years of accumulated dust in the lungs. Even on his deathbed in the hospital, I never heard him complain—in fact, I never once heard him complain, ever. From his hospital bed, all he wanted to hear about was what I had done that day, or how I was doing at school.

When he died, late one night, there was no fuss, no emergency, no noise—he just took one breath, and then no more. He died as he had lived, quietly and without complaint. From him, I developed the saying, “The mark of a decent man is not how much he thinks about himself, but how much time he spends thinking about others.”

Charles Loxton thought only about other people his entire life.

So far I've pretty much ignored the 2015 Whack-a-Mole campaign season.  Try as I might, I just cannot concoct a believable scenario where Jimmy Stewart is elected president after Air Force General James Mattoon Scott ousts the Manchurian candiate president, and throws the lot down a volcano.  Only Donald Trump makes noise that interests me, and because he's thus scared the crap out of entrenched Republicans there seems to be a chance of removing some of the party's colon cancer (Boehner Blastoma). To wit:

  6/14/2016

Since I see a parallel between Trump-Clinton? & 1980's Reagan Carter contest—both being  the worst president in history at the time—Carter is now 3rd—I've included the polling history above.  In that race Reagan (32%) trailed Jummy (39%) in early June/July.  By early August Reagan was up  45% - 29%.  That lead that dropped to 47% - 44% on election day.  But, Reagan won 51% - 41%,  winning all but four states (including Maryland), and DC.  The term "silent majority' was born, and has driven Democrats nuts ever since (leading to  the Left's war against the "Christian coalition."  Anyway, bookmark this so you can give me the raspberries after the election, or marvel at my political prescience.

More Clintonista Crap

Thug Culture

Yesterday, America awoke to the unexpected reality that Donald Trump was president-elect. Many Americans felt some combination of relief, excitement and optimism after being fed up with the last eight years of Washington elitists foisting their socialist agenda upon the country. But most Democrats expressed shock, dismay and disbelief as they saw their grip on national power evaporate overnight.

What do leftists do when their candidate loses? Protest, violently if "necessary."

From New York City to San Francisco, Boston to Austin, DC to Seattle, Chicago to Portland, angry and disgruntled leftists spilled into the streets, holding up signs and chanting, "Not my president." In Chicago, hundreds gathered outside Trump International Hotel and Tower shouting, "No Trump! No KKK! No racist USA!" One young woman holding up a sign that read, "Enjoy your rights while you can," said, "I'm just really terrified about what is happening in this country."

In Oakland, the protesting crowd grew to 6,000 and began rioting by smashing windows and setting fires so that law enforcement was brought in to quell the situation. Neighboring San Francisco saw hundreds of people marching and chanting "Donald Trump has got to go." One woman brought her five-year-old son to the protest and said through tears, "I don't know how to explain to him the state of the world. I want him to understand that there aren't all evil people out there." Well, she certainly could have chosen a better venue to seek to reinforce that ideal.

What is truly ironic about leftist action and rhetoric is the fact that what they claim to fear and decry is the very thing they practice. By labeling those who disagree with their point of view as bigots and racists, they are displaying the very hate they claim to be combating. And it's truly ironic that the "Democratic" Party has the most trouble adhering to and practicing the ideals of "democracy." {SOURCE}

There Will Be A Quiz

Trump will be the 45th President of the United States of America, taking office at the end of President Obama's tenure. He won the Electoral College by a significant margin, although it appears that he may have lost the popular vote, or at least that it will be extraordinarily close.

And now the question remains: who is to blame for this turn of events? Who can I point the finger at and direct my anger towards? Turns out, there are a lot of people - as long as I don't have to look inward and blame myself for anything.

I understand that your college professors are overwhelmingly (9-1) flaming liberals.  But, puh-leeeze ... .  I mean, there must be some dissenting voices.  Do you jeer them out of the classroom on the spot?  Or wait until you're outside before you beat the shit out of them?

Here's one more;

"4. The Democratic Party"

Hey Democrats - by doing everything in your power to squeeze out populist candidate Bernie Sanders, you crushed a major part of your base and screwed yourself over! If you would have just nominated a 75-year old self-identified democratic socialist, HE TOTALLY WOULD HAVE CONVINCED MIDWEST WORKING CLASS VOTERS TO GO FOR HIM. Bernie's approval numbers are great right now, in the reality where he wasn't the candidate for president and therefore Republicans had no incentive to run a massive McCarthyism-esque smear campaign against him. I'm sure with every screaming pundit in America screaming about "socialism" 24/7, America still TOTALLY would have gone for the oldest person ever to run for president.
Y'all entirely miss the point.  No Democrat was getting in the way of this tidal wave.  Your time was up, LoFos.    [FULL]

ADD MICH

Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 13,225 votes in Michigan in his path to the presidency, unofficial Secretary of State office results show. Trump captured the presidency in a dramatic photo finish to an unpredictable and wild presidential election, using his anti-establishment movement to break through Clinton’s last line of defense in the industrial Upper Midwest. "America will no longer settle for anything less than the best," Trump said in a victory speech just before 3 a.m. "We must reclaim our country's destiny." Michigan proved to be one of Trump's crucial final states after the New York businessman won critical swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Iowa and Ohio.

"Here come the GOP excuses"
No, my dear Republicans, if Trump loses, they have themselves to blame — for adopting a white-grievance mentality, for burrowing in a right-wing media cave, for pretending that the country is supposed to be what it was in 1950 when white Christian America was supreme ... .

Under the stewardship of (Amazon owner) Jeff Bezos, the WaPost has gone from being a liberal rag that sometimes tries, to a reliably rancid clone of the New York Times. File this snotty election eve Jenifer Rubin article, "Here come the GOP excuses," under COMEUPPANCES.

If, as appears increasingly likely, Hillary Clinton wins today, the Republicans most responsible for the calamity will stand ready to spout a load of excuses they've been accumulating since the Republican National Convention, when it became reasonably apparent that Donald Trump was going to run his general-election campaign just the way he did his primary race. Let's save them the trouble:

It's the media's fault. How long are inept and out-of-touch Republicans going to blame the media? They've got Fox News, Breitbart, talk radio, etc. — advantages some Republicans never had before. They had multiple debates to get their message out. Oh, yes, and the media handed Trump a couple of billion dollars' worth of ad time in the primaries, making his nomination possible. If they cannot win with all that, they never will.

There is no electoral majority of right-wing, older white males who resent women in the workplace and immigrants in their country.
It's the FBI's fault. We thought James B. Comey was a hero. Oh, I know, that's so pre-Nov. 6 (the day of his last letter). Seriously, if Republicans need a criminal prosecution to beat a flawed opponent running for a third Democratic presidential term, they have real problems. Saying that Clinton never should have been allowed to run assumes that she was a really good candidate, not a weak one.

It's the #NeverTrumpers' fault. C'mon, guys. The people who warned that Trump was a disaster are not to be blamed. The people who ignored the #NeverTrumpers are. To our chagrin, the large majority of Republicans will vote for Trump. It's everyone else — that means Democrats and independents, in addition to a small but determined batch of Republicans — who would be responsible for his defeat, if Clinton wins. The argument blaming #NeverTrumpers ignores why they voted against Trump and presupposes that the highest obligation Republicans have is not to country, but to party. Many Republicans emphatically reject the argument.

It's a one-off problem unique to the Trump candidacy. Nonsense. The GOP has not won the presidency since 2004 because it insists on relying on a diminishing segment of the electorate and infuriating everyone else. The chickens are coming home to roost as millions of women, African Americans, Hispanics and millennials turn against the GOP in ever greater numbers.

It's the way the system works; there was nothing to be done. That's the excuse we may hear from Republican National Committee officials who were so worried about losing Trump that they sold their party's principles away to keep him in the fold. At several instances, the RNC could have made a difference if it had repudiated him, demanded that he release tax information or allowed delegates to vote their conscience. Moreover, this doesn't explain why GOP primary voters failed to reject an ignoramus, a racist, a xenophobe and a dangerous narcissist. By the time the primaries rolled around — and certainly the general election — they knew exactly what they were getting. They voted for him anyway.

It's the fault of white voters who didn't turn out. This sort of magical thinking is what got the GOP into trouble in the first place. There is no electoral majority of right-wing, older white males who resent women in the workplace and immigrants in their country. Americans are a diverse, tolerant nation of immigrants who, generally speaking, do not hate government; the GOP's resistance to that reality has led to its current, sorry state.

It was closer than the [Goldwater/McCain/Romney] race. If Trump goes down to defeat, the margin may be big or small. Nevertheless, he will have lost to Hillary Clinton, for goodness' sake, who is the most flawed, disliked and untrustworthy major-party candidate in history with one exception. It's not enough to say that Trump (perhaps) made it close. Any other Republican should have cleaned up against a candidate with this many faults.

No, my dear Republicans, if Trump loses, they have themselves to blame — for adopting a white-grievance mentality, for burrowing in a right-wing media cave, for pretending that the country is supposed to be what it was in 1950 when white Christian America was supreme, for listening to anti-immigrant advocates spout untruths to justify xenophobia, for getting cowed by the irrational mob, for becoming anti-government ideologues, for forgetting the essence of modern conservatism (humility, caution, respect for fellow Americans, dedication to equality of opportunity), for losing interest in good governance, for following religious charlatans who laughably claim the moral high ground, for giving way to all-or-nothing purists who make money from obstructionist tactics and for refusing to denounce hucksters and con men who plowed the way for Trump. If the party doesn't attend to those very real, serious problems, it will keep on losing presidential races — and maybe fade away altogether.

Hillary Clinton maintains a narrow four-point advantage over Donald Trump in the Washington Post-ABC News Tracking Poll, with the Democrat holding key advantages on election eve even as pockets of uncertainty persist. The poll, which finds 47 percent of likely voters support Clinton while 43 percent support, with Gary Johnson far behind at 4 percent and Jill Stein at 1 percent, was conducted among 2,220 likely voters from Thursday through Sunday. When third party candidates are excluded, Clinton’s margin ticks down to three points, 49 to 46 percent.
