I know what you're yelling— "I thought you were tired of politics? ..."  Well, this isn't politics; it's making fun of silly people selling silly crap.

Jon Corzine Relaxes

President Barack Obama's re-election campaign identified its top fundraisers on Tuesday, including 61 people who each raised at least half a million dollars. Altogether, the more than 440 fundraisers collected at least $75 million to help Obama win a second term.

Among them are embattled former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine. Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee late last year returned $70,000 in contributions from Corzine and his wife following questions about the collapse of MF Global, the financial firm Corzine ran.

This aftermarket woodfire stove was designed for the Saab, but I don't see why it couldn't be used in other cars.  Indeed, there is a real trend toward  making automobiles with friendly, down home interiors, like the Mercedes Cottage shown in the Header Video (Or here if you'd rather).

The Mittsters

Feelings

Res Ipsa Loquitur

When I saw this picture of the Mittester and his bride over the weekend,  I had an immediate and visceral reaction.
  1. Mitt reminded me of someone I'd want to smack when I was in high school.  Captain of the lacrosse team, drove a 'Vette, SGA president, stole my girlfriend.  Okay, woulda been my girlfriend if he wasn't around. Smarmy dude.
  2. His wife looks like Hillary.
There's no accounting visceral reaction of course, and I normally wouldn't mention mine; here; about this;  but for this Yahoo story.

The press has offered basically two explanations for Mitt Romney’s failure to win over conservative voters. The first is ideological: conservatives know that Romney was once a moderate and they don’t consider his swing to the right sincere. The second is personal: whether because of his money, his faith or his hair, average Republican voters just don’t relate to him.

So yeah, I'm simpatico with that assessment.  I don't think we're capable of altering our  moral firmament  after the age of 7 (the age of reason), which is why good, early parenting is so important. So, for instance, a  liar will always be a liar.  I'm not accusing Mitt of that here, just distinguishing.  We can on the other hand change our  politics quite dramatically (see David Horowitz), so I don't have my heels dug in on that score with Mitt.  Maybe he has changed his mind since Romney-care. Don't matter.  I just don't like him.

The article below is written by Eric Allen Bell, a filmmaker who was recently banned from blogging at  the “Daily Kos” because he wrote three articles that ran afoul of the mindset there, specifically naming “Loonwatch.com” as a “terrorist spin control network.” This article first appeared in our Feb 7 issue and we have decided to rerun it due to the massive interest and reaction it received. As I looked at a sea of Palestinian flags and college kids banging on drums I felt a certain frustration – frustration based on a series of events that have changed my world view.

Res Ipsa Loquitur
In the Summer of 2010, having recently escaped Hollywood, CA to take a much needed break from my profession as a film maker, I was driving in my car listening to a story on NPR.  It seems the people in my new home of Murfreesboro, TN were up in arms over the proposed construction of a 53,000 square foot mega mosque, to be built in their small town in the middle of the American Bible Belt.

I listened carefully, to the sound bytes, of those who had shown up to a town hall meeting to voice their opposition and, as someone who was rather new to the South, I was surprised by what I was hearing.   “America is a Christian nation and there is only one God and his name is not Allah and his son is Jesus Christ” and “America is a Christian Nation” and “These Muslims do not share my values and I don’t want them in my backyard”.  Growing up in Southern California, I had never heard anything like this before in my life.  And I started to follow the story with great interest.

Palin Quips Mitt

A day after Mr. Romney stood before thousands of conservative activists at the conference and called himself a “severely conservative governor,” Ms. Palin conceded that she was puzzled by his description.

“I wasn’t quite sure what the word ‘severely’ meant,” she said with a smile. “It sounded severe.”  [Palin Says Brokered Convention Would Not Hurt G.O.P.]

IDEA REKINDLING

Res Ipsa Loquitur

I shan't be the first person to suggest that new voter registrants must(along with showing proper picture ID) pass this test.  Yep, the Immigration and Naturalization Service exam new citizen candidates must pass. Well, unless it's an election year, and a democrat incumbent is seeking reelection.  In that case the INS is usually instructed to engage in "Group Mex,"  so to speak.  At any rate,  the test shouldn't be too awfully  hard to pass.  I don't know what a passing score is, but I'd argue for 95%.   There are a few questions I'd dearly love to see in a  "most frequent wrong answer" list.   My guess for these three are—

QUESTION
MOST (probable) WRONG AWNSER GIVEN
82. Name one purpose of the United Nations. * Sorry, but straight-away I'm deviating from the format.  The only appropriate answer here is "This question has no business being included in this list."   Any other answer means instant deportation.
86. Name one benefit of being a citizen of the United States. Free Stuff
87. What is the most important right granted to U.S. citizens? Getting Free stuff

So, how'd you do?

ACLU Sues Bloomfield for Display of 10 Commandments

Res Ipsa Loquitur

Yesterday, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico filed a lawsuit on behalf of two Bloomfield, NM citizens who seek the removal of the Ten Commandments monument prominently displayed on the city hall lawn. The lawsuit alleges that the monument is a government endorsement of religion and violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as well as the New Mexico State Constitution.

In a unique compromise that may find favor with  other municipalities plagued by contentious and disagreeable citizens, the town chiseled out the sixth commandment and killed the two complainants.  The ACLU had no choice but to drop the suit until another citizen petitions them. That appears unlikely.

I promised catharsis.

Dementiaville - Did I post this before?

Switzerland's 'Dementiaville' designed to mirror the past
Plan to build 1950s-style village for Alzheimer's sufferers divides geriatric-care experts

Switzerland's "Dementialville"

Its detractors may end up dubbing it "Dementiaville", but Switzerland is brushing aside a debate raging among geriatric-care experts with plans to build a mock-1950s village catering exclusively for elderly sufferers of Alzheimer's and other debilitating mental illnesses.

The newly approved €20m (£17m) housing project is to be built next to the Swiss village of Wiedlisbach near Bern and will provide sheltered accommodation and care for 150 elderly dementia patients in 23 purpose-built 1950s-style houses. The homes will be deliberately designed to recreate the atmosphere of times past.

The scheme's promoters said there will be no closed doors and residents will be free to move about. To reinforce an atmosphere of normality, the carers will dress as gardeners, hairdressers and shop assistants. The only catch is that Wiedlisbach's inhabitants will not be allowed to leave the village. [Full]
