Helmet Pillow

Helmet for My Pillow is the personal narrative written by World War II United States Marine Corps veteran, author and military historian Robert Leckie. First published in 1957, the story begins with Leckie enlisting in the United States Marines shortly after the 1941 Attack on Pearl Harbor.

The 2010 HBO mini-series The Pacific was adapted in large part from Helmet for My Pillow, along with Eugene Sledge's With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa and the personal story of Medal of Honor recipient Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone.

Another downloaded (audio) library book.  I'd never heard of the author, nor the HBO series that portrayed some of the book, but I do recommend it to men. Unlike One Man's War, which I thought had some womanly appeal, Pillow is manly-man all the way.  I had a bit of a problem with the reader, whom I found too slow.  Fortunately I was able to play it at a 25% faster speed, and that was that.

You can read pages at Amazon, or listen to selected audio.  Here is 6-7 minutes that I recorded, having to do with his stay at a Navy hospital.  I think this book might be better read than listened to (but I found it good walking entertainment).

Holder's Revenge?

Culture War

News From the Front

This is raw vindictiveness by Holder, because Arizona had the temerity to attempt to uphold federal immigration law.  Once again I am reminded of The Second Civil War, which had Idaho's governor secede from the Union in the face of Pakistani refugees being dumped into his state.  Before long, several other states joined Idaho, and it was game on.  By the by, this was broadcast during the Clinton years, so bear that in mindshould you ever watch it.  Large portions of the HBO media audience were not pleased with this Made-4-TV at all; and it had a short run.  I don't think HBO ever did reruns.

PS- It seems to me that any state would have a constitutional right to refuse these illegals, and certainly a Tree of Liberty mandate to do so. But, what do I know?

LAST OF ORIGINAL NAVAJO CODE TALKERS PASSES AWAY
By Headquarters Marine Corps, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON --
The passing of Chester Nez, one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers, sadly marks the end of an era in our country's and Marine Corps' history. We mourn his passing but honor and celebrate the indomitable spirit and dedication of those Marines who became known as the Navajo Code Talkers.

The Navajo Code Talkers made invaluable contributions to the war effort in the Pacific theater during World War II. Their heroic actions were recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2001.

The incredible bravery, dedicated service and sacrifices of Mr. Nez and his fellow Code Talkers will forever remain part of the proud legacy of our Corps and will continue to inspire generations of Marines into the future. MARINES

Even Major Hollywood Studios are Leaving California

When Hollywood leaves Hollywood, you know things are bad.

Sony Pictures Imageworks is moving its headquarters from Culver City to Canada.

The visual-effects unit, which employs about 270 people, said it was moving a bulk of its operations to Vancouver, where it already has a satellite studio, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A small staff will remain in Los Angeles. The move will cut costs due to Canadian tax breaks, the Times said.

For the moment this is just the visual effects unit, but considering how much filming is done abroad, it’s not a good sign.

Movies are going where the tax credits are. Canada is already tied with California.

California produced 68 percent of the top 25 movies at the worldwide box office in 1997. In 2013, it was down to eight percent. Of the 26 live-action films with production budgets over $100 million, just two — “The Hangover Part III” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness” — were filmed primarily in California.

Los Angeles however won’t be getting the sequel as LA proved too expensive for Darkness’ budget.

If California loses the film industry and pushes out non-Green energy companies, it’s going to be left with the tech industry and a giant welfare state that the tech industry will flee.

OMFG!  California will have to raise the minimum wage again to keep tax revenues up!

Speculation Builds on Michelle Obama Senate Run
First Lady could be positioning herself for a run at Mark Kirk's seat in 2016

Are Illini ready for Carol Moseley Braun  II?  That there was even a Carol Moseley Braun  I is chilling.  However, and I could be wrong, but my feeling is that if Illinois could go to the polls today and vote to erase the Obamas from human memory, they'd be expunged likkety-split.  What a joke.  But, then, so was the prospect of her husband's presidency.

Executing Bowe Bergdahl

Channels

Death Penalty Month at anncoulter.com has already been interrupted by the psycho in Santa Barbara, and now it's being interrupted by the Buddhist in Bagram.

Keeping to the spirit of Death Penalty Month, let's review the execution of Pvt. Eddie Slovik. Slovik's offense: desertion in wartime. (See the tie-in?)

Unlike Bowe Bergdahl, who deserted his unit, according to the accounts of his comrades, Slovik never actually deserted. He also didn't call America a "disgusting" country or say he was "ashamed to be an American."

Slovik was just a chicken.

In October 1944, as Allied forces were sweeping through France, Slovik left his position on the front lines, walked to the rear of his unit and handed a note to the cook, confessing his desertion. The letter explained that he was "so scared" that he had already abandoned his unit once, and concluded: "AND I'LL RUN AWAY AGAIN IF I HAVE TO GO OUT THERE."

Slovik was like Bradley Manning minus the lipstick and eyeliner.

A lieutenant, a company commander and a judge advocate all tried to persuade Slovik to shred the letter and return to his unit, warning him that he'd be tried for desertion otherwise. Slovik refused.

In the middle of World War II, the military court-martialed Slovik, tried him and sentenced him to death.

Allied Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower denied Slovik's pardon request, saying it would encourage more desertions, just as the fighting was getting especially hot. Slovik was executed by firing squad and buried among the numbered graves of court-martialed rapists and murderers in an American military cemetery in France.

Contrast Slovik's story with the beloved troop whose return just cost us the release of five of the most dangerous terrorists in the world.

Three days before he walked off his base, Bergdahl emailed his parents:

-- "I am ashamed to be an american."

-- "The US army is the biggest joke ... It is the army of liars, backstabbers, fools and bullies."

-- "These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid."

-- "The horror that is america is disgusting."

These emails were given to the author of a 2012 Rolling Stone article on the case by Bergdahl's own parents.  [Continued]

With one glaring exception, Ann Coulter channels me in all things, including the use of Eddie Slovic here (yes, I thought of it first).

What’s Causing theUpswing of Contagious Diseases in the United States?
DUH

The strict enforcement of our laws, and especially the imposition of one hundred dollars fine for bringing to our ports any ease of a contagious character, have occasioned some improvement in the inspection made by ships' doctors at European ports. At the port of embarkation the immigrants' names are recorded upon lists or manifests, each list containing about thirty names. After each name the steamship officials are required by law to record answers to a certain number of queries relating to the immigrant.

1903 Passenger Manifests

Seton 12 of the act of 1903 provides that the manifests shall state, in answer to the questions at the top of the manifest sheet:

  • The over representation of tuberculosis in foreign-born communities suggests one of two things, either the INS is not up to snuff in requiring proper documentation for entering immigrants, or immigrants from China and Mexico are coming to the United States illegally with these diseases and are not subject to normal INS protocol designed to keep diseases from getting into the country. Regardless of which possibility is responsible, this represents a direct threat to the populace of the United States.   Ahem

STFU McCain

John McCain Flip Flops On Sgt. Bergdahl Swap. Are You Surprised?

Senator John McCain, the most booked Sunday talk show guest has a big problem when it comes to the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl prisoner swap that President Obama signed off on. Originally he was all for the trade of prisoners back in February, but if you listen to him now, it's like that never ever happened. Scarce properly called him out over it by saying: The craven politics of John McCain are nothing new. They aren't, but what's just as frustrating is that CNN had the chance to question him on his new position, but failed to do so. Will the media ever call him on it?

Why Did He Do It Now?

Hitler's Mustache

Here's the real question.  Why?  Why now?  Obama knew that by giving congress a 30 minute heads-up, instead of the by-law required 30 days, there would be a firestorm.   This was always going to be for him a lose-lose political action, and yet he did it anyway.  Why?  I've had stuff swirling about in my minimalist brain, and this is the best I could come up with.

Obama has planned a "terrorist action" so devastating that he can use it to declare martial law- a total lock down- and rule imperiously.  I mean more imperiously than usual.  A glitch of some kind developed, and his al-Qaeda benefactors desperately needed leadership from the likes of the Gitmo Dream Team.  The pretext, also suggested by his "advisors," was a swap for Taliban captive, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.  It's likely that Obama did not anticipate that Bergdahl's back story of treason and desertion would be noticed, if he even knew himself.  Gird-up!

By the by, here's the most precious (and oh-so telling) thing in the aftermath. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned Wednesday that Republican lawmakers would call for President Obama’s impeachment if he released more prisoners from Guantanamo Bay without congressional approval.

Your turn.

Here's JOHNNY

Meet our new SEC/Air Force

Well, well, well.  An added benefit to installing Linux was it discovered the Windows backup directory that Windows couldn't, so yes, I have restored my computer to its original state and am presently restoring old files.  But wait!  So pleased am I with Linux that my first order of bidness after getting my sea legs back is to re-install Linux Mint and use a virtual Windows window.  Here's the sorry ass'd part -- my backup files were created by, you guessed it, Advanced System Care.  My first action this morning was to install Avast to save me from any ASC incursions.

By the By ..... this is the archived photo and title on my text editor template.  I have no idea.

LINUX

Oh My

This is my first post using LINUX.  Had to do it because my WIN 7 got so screwed up that the recover software wouldn’t even show.  I place total responsibility on myself- for using Advanced System Care, which is the Al-Qaeda of watchdog programs-- actually Mafia, since it exacts retribution from any who try to disable it.So here I am.  I have no idea what I'll use instead of Paint Shop Pro, or what text editor.  And I don't care.  I hate Window's guts.  (But, in the spirit of Christian love,  I forgive them.  Pricks.
