Enemy at the gate

Chicago Auctions

The former main Chicago post office was built in 1921, with an addition in 1932. The Graham, Anderson, Probst and White-designed building looks almost as indestructible on the inside as it does to passersby. That is, except for the peeling paint, the falling dropped ceilings, the buckled wood floors and the dusty debris that's accumulated since the Postal Service relocated across Harrison Street. (Tribune photo by Antonio Perez / July 8, 2009)
When we were kids, me and Sister-Sue would delight when mom and pop drove under this building on the way home from the train station.  It was the Second Wonder of the World (after the  fluoroscope shoe deal at Sears).  That it went for a mere $40 mil surprises me, since I would think the location alone is worth more.  The Merchandise Mart has 4 million sq. ft., and was purchased by Joe Kennedy for $12.5 mil in 1945 (without putting a cent down) and is currently valued at $917 million   Anyway, I set to thinking, what would I do with 2.7 million square feet of space in downtown Chicago, if it was magically deeded over to me?  After much thought, I decided I'd sell it for $40 million and leave Dodge.

PS.  I know it was a public auction, but this is Chicago after all.  It'll be interesting to see who the new owners are, and what their connection to Obama is.  Oh, there will be a connection.

Democratic Health Care Bill Divulges IRS Tax Data

Section 431(a) of the bill says that the IRS must divulge taxpayer identity information, including the filing status, the modified adjusted gross income, the number of dependents, and "other information as is prescribed by" regulation. That information will be provided to the new Health Choices Commissioner and state health programs and used to determine who qualifies for "affordability credits."

Section 245(b)(2)(A) says the IRS must divulge tax return details -- there's no specified limit on what's available or unavailable -- to the Health Choices Commissioner. The purpose, again, is to verify "affordability credits."

Section 1801(a) says that the Social Security Administration can obtain tax return data on anyone who may be eligible for a "low-income prescription drug subsidy" but has not applied for it.

When I heard last week that Ted Kennedy wanted to change Massachusetts succession law, so Gov. Duval Patrick (it's easy to confuse him with Eric Holder) could immediately appoint his successor, I thought what I always think when the late Ted opens his yap.  YPOSMFCS!  And that was before I learned this.
Until 2004, a vacancy would have been filled by gubernatorial appointment. But legislative Democrats changed the rules that year, fearful that a presidential victory by US Senator John F. Kerry would give Republican Governor Mitt Romney the right to appoint a GOP successor.

They passed legislation creating the current system, which would leave Massachusetts with only one vote in the Senate for up to six months. (WaPost)

Rep Rogers on Obamacare

Rep. Mike Rogers

Earlier I posted on a phenomenal speaker, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R Mich), and here - another Republican, also the likes of which we don't see much of anymore.  He's also from  Michigan,.
Congressman Rogers' makes his opening statement on Health Care reform legislation that is under debate in Congress.
Some of the neatest people I've known, like the Mike Homants, and my own dear wife  and her family,  are from Michigan.  Yet, when I think of that state's politics, reprobates like Conyers, Stabenow, Riegle, Levin, and Dingell domibate.   I just looked it up, and was surprised to see that Democrats have just a one seat advantage (8-7) in that delegation.  Anyway, for the  second time this week Michigan has given me a boner. Watch this, and you will feel pretty perky yourself.

There are legitimate reasons to fire virtually any employee, so avail yourself of them. See how calm he is?

Dog quote - Sum-Gai

"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie!'... till you can find a rock."

Barney the slug

calling the kettle black

Almost too rich for words, but let me try.

In the documentary about  Amos & Andy [What's the Fuss?] I posted yesterday, comedian George Kirby asks several Blacks  in Manhattan. "What do you think of when you hear Amos 'n Andy?"  Most, who appeared old enough to have actually watched it, remembered it fondly.  Of the two dissenters, one said "calling someone Amos & Andy was a put down;" the apparently youngest said it played to stereotypes

Kirby next noted that while the radio show's white actors -  Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll -  had stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, television's Black actors had none.  My immediate thought was -- WTF?  Can you imagine the furor if Hollywood attempted to give  Alvin Childress   (Andy),  Spencer Williams ( Kingfish),  Tim Moore (Amos) or Ernestine Wade (Sapphire Stevens ) Stars?  Kirby himslef would have been among those expressing outrage., I guarantee it.

Anyway, I'm reminded of that most recent example of  tortured Black logic by a Leonard Pitts Jr. column. His  journalistic bread and butter is finding racial over-and-undertones in anything.  Here's the lede from "The right is cynically exploiting race

You are such a racist nigger."- reader e-mail

To answer your questions: Yes, the e-mail is quoted in its entirety. Yes, it's authentic; I received it a year or so ago. And, no, it is not unique in its sentiment, its coarseness or its deafness to irony. That note has always struck me as a stark benchmark of our slide into racial incoherence.

So, a single e-mail, which use of "nigger" would by my experience suggest a Black writer, is "a stark benchmark of our slide into racial incoherence,?I'm underwhelmed.  Give me another example Lenny.

Pitts Jr.
Here's another: Last week on "FOX & Friends," Glenn Beck, the FOX News host, declared President Obama a "racist" with "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

Bare seconds later, Beck turned around and said, "I'm not saying he doesn't like white people..."

Maybe we should blame his confusion on the stress of being discriminated against. Nobody knows the trouble he's seen.

But seriously. Beck is just the latest conservative caught trying to manipulate race in a naked appeal to the resentments of the white underclass. It's a breathtakingly cynical campaign that has gathered steam in recent years.

Like George Kirby, and so many other Black observers, Pitts Jr. is so hidebound by his own racial prejudice that,   with auto immune disease-like efficiency, he destroys himself with his own logic. Did Pitts, Jr. read  Dreams of My Father?   Is Pitts Jr. the only man alive who could answer "name a single Obama achievement that  recommends him to the presidency, other than being (nominally) Black

The problem with Pitts's ilk is the same one Democrats have in the age of talk radio and the internet.  Having never been challenged before to debate on merit, they're ill equipped to deal with it, so they hurry to name calling.

Here's the only thing this guy says that I can endorse.

Because what matters here is ... the insult to our collective intelligence - and our collective hopes. One of which is that we will all someday evolve the courage, the compassion and the intercultural trust to face the hard truths of race head on, and thereby validate that self-evident truth upon which the country was founded.

Netscape Retro

Old Netscape users will find this a familiar sight.

Like many of you I began began life using the Netscape browser -- what got et up by Microsoft's bully boys.  Before releasing Firefox, Mozilla was keeping Netscape alive, as sort of a community nerd thing I never quite understood.  Finally they  rereleased it as SeaMonkey.  Why Mozilla later did Firefox as a separate browser is beyond my ken, and interest. Anyway, since I'd never quit using Netscape E-mail, and Composer (Netscape had a HTML editor called  Composer) I've kept it, and later SeaMonkey, up to date.

Because I use the SeaMonkey e-mail (as well as Thunderbird), any time y'all send me a link it's auto opened in SeaMonkey's browser, which still has the look and feel of Netscape.  I copy useful information/urls over to Firefox.  A few weeks ago I decided to actually use the SeaMonkey browser, just a little each day.   Many, but not all of the Firefox add-ons are available for SeaMonkey, including all those I find indispensable.

Guess what?  I find myself going to it more and more, and just now realized I've had it running all day. It's faster and smoother (thanks to an add-on called Smooth Wheel, which by god I see is also available in Firefox)  than Firefox.  You  may want to take a look at SeaMonkey, if only for Composer.  Yes, you get the whole suite but don't have to use them all.

FWIW.

Hoyer Memo

Dear Leader Hoyer ...
Memo from CBO Director Elmendorf to Rep. Hoyer discussing PAYGO Asset seizure plans

If you're trying to figure out what you're reading, this is a summary memo for a Steny Hoyer requested review of HR 2920 (the PAYGO budget act). The response was sent to Rep. Hoyer's office yesterday, as a followup to his request to review an amended version of the bill. I'm not sure we've seen the 'amended version' released publicly yet.

Obviously the most disconcerting statement in this on page 1:

• The legislation would shift some control over the budget process from the Congress to the executive branch in ways that could effectively require lawmakers to vote on legislation without a clear indication of the potential impact of their decisions on the triggering of a future sequestration.

For those reaching for the dictionary...a 'sequestration' is basically a property seizure, for the benefit of creditors, or THE STATE.

So in this case; asset seizure, taxes, etc are the sequestration being discussed. And it would transfer the power to the executive branch, to make requests for those sequestrations in such a vague way, that the Congress may be 'forced' to vote on such without any clear understanding of what is to be seized.

Abuse of power anyone?

Now on page 3 of the PDF is where it gets more interesting. Take a look at the CBO's 'Scoring to Reflect Current Policy':

Scoring to Reflect “Current Policy.” Both H.R. 2920 as introduced and the amendment would specify unique scoring rules for legislation affecting four areas of the budget: 1. Medicare’s “sustainable growth rate” (SGR) mechanism for paying physicians; 2. The estate and gift tax; 3. The alternative minimum tax for individuals; and 4. The income tax cuts enacted in the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003.   (more)

BREAKING NEWS! (MARCH, 2008) Obama’s Passport Hijacked!
Drudge Report is reporting that Obama’s passport file has been stolen. Wonder who did that? This is getting DIRTY ya’ll!

DIRTY TRICKS FEAR AFTER STATE DEPT. FIRES TWO FOR UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO BARACK OBAMA’S PERSONAL PASSPORT FILE… MORE… WASHINGTON TIMES SET TO SPLASH THE DEVELOPMENT, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE REPORT… MORE

From the WaTimes, Saturday, April 19, 2008.

Key witness in passport fraud case fatally shot

A key witness in a federal probe into passport information stolen from the State Department was fatally shot in front of a District church, the Metropolitan Police Department said yesterday.

Lt. Quarles Harris Jr., 24, who had been cooperating with a federal investigators, was found late Thursday night slumped dead inside a car, in front of the Judah House Praise Baptist Church in Northeast, said Cmdr. Michael Anzallo, head of the department's Criminal Investigations Division.

The Washington Times reported April 5 that contractors for the State Department had improperly accessed passport information for presidential candidates Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain, which resulted in a series of firings that reached into the agency's top ranks.

It didn't mean all that much last March, but now it's a headliner. Now there are the questions, still unanswered, about  what passport  Barry used to travel to Pakistan, and was he accepted at Occidental College as an exchange student?   A party to the breakin is murdered.  Who do you think ordered that raid on Obammy's file?  That's right. She knew. Who do you think would have reason to  (not saying did) order a hit on the guy?  Hint: he's from Chicago.

Here's the FR comments on thius story.

Palin Polar

Doctor Zero gets it, and speaks for many - very many - of us.
When I began writing for Hot Air, I never imagined I would find myself critical of Charles Krauthammer twice, after only blogging for four months. I’ve followed his work for years, and still eagerly read everything he publishes. He writes brilliantly on many topics, but he just doesn’t get Sarah Palin, or by extension her supporters… which by further extension means he misunderstands the precarious moment America finds itself in, and the opportunities that lie ahead for conservatives.

Let me dispense with the most controversial part of Krauthammer’s recent Town Hall column first: this condescending nonsense about asking Palin to “leave the room” while “we have a reasoned discussion about end-of-life counseling.” There’s only one group of people who needs to leave the room during that discussion, and it’s the socialist zealot in the White House, along with the craven cowards in his party. They’ve already demonstrated a remarkable gift for swiftly leaving the room when people start asking tough questions, so we’ll hardly notice when they slink out. Maybe while they’re gone, they could find the billions in Cash for Clunkers money that vanished into thin air.

Those Facebook pages she’s tossing around like ninja throwing stars are  ... [continued]
Like Ann Coulter's dis of we who will not take insults for answers about Barry's birthing, I disagree with Krauthammer's "condescending nonsense."  But, what the hell, I disappointed my mother a lot too, but she stuck by me, as I will with these two.  Until they commit a second capital crime.

How do you feel about the flu vaccine? In Massachusetts, it's about to become the law. If it happens there, it could happen anywhere, and everywhere.

Yep. You better take it, cause it's the law. No matter if it kills more people then the damn flu kills. They want you to take it and, starting in Massachusetts, you're going to take it. They're gonna bring in outside people to make you take it help distribute it, Acorn like as not.

You don't wanna take it? Well. If you won't take it, then they'll just have to lock your ass up for the good of the people, quarantine you, even if you're not sick. Presumably, they'll have a special camp for ya. And if they put you there, well, they'll fine you $1,000 a day to keep you there.

It's not a pandemic, unless of course, they say it is.

And if they say is, well, then it is, isn't it?

Palin gets it right

Which would make Obama wrong.  Again.

UPDATED - The Soros Connection

One of these people is an idiot

The Export-Import Bank has proposed a $2 billion loan to a Brazilian oil company to fund oil drilling and development by a state-owned company, hurting American workers, oil companies, and the country’s energy independence. Sarah Palin sees this is as a rather self-defeating strategy.

After the idea went public, Palin quickly noted that President Obama wants to use American dollars to pay salaries and benefits to Brazilians — to state-owned oil company, Petrobras, at that — to the detriment of our own country. (cont)
BUT WAIT! THIS JUST IN
Teapot Dome on Steroids?
Billionaire investor George Soros bought an $811 million stake in Petroleo Brasileiro SA in the second quarter, making the Brazilian state-controlled oil company his investment fund's largest holding.

There is another interesting aspect to this development. Could it be just a coincidence that Obama backer George Soros repositioned himself in Petrobras to get dividends just a few days before Obama committed $2 billion in loans and guarantees for Petrobras’ offshore operations?
