Some CBS show

Slippery Minutes
“ On September 19, a week before the new season officially began, CBS’s Lesley Stahl promoted the latest book of Jimmy Carter, and insisted that Carter was a bigger success than most presidents, including Ronald Reagan: "But when all is said and done, and many will be surprised to hear this: Jimmy Carter got more of his programs passed than Reagan and Nixon, Ford, Bush 1, Clinton or Bush 2."

Boned Jello

People I know personally, including my own dad, have recounted how Sixty-Minutes took lengthy interviews (depositions), then edited and manipulated them, out of context, to support their thesis du Jour. With the single exception of Hillary's cattle futures fraud (never re-aired), until Bill was impeached,  not a single segment was devoted to a Clinton scandal.  Mike Wallace's  handling of Vince Foster was prolly the last time I watched the show out of habit.  In the 15 years since, I may have watched a dozen times, which is why I was surprised by this factoid.

“ Barack Obama was a major beneficiary of 60 Minutes admiration. CBS has devoted hours of air time to the promotion of Barack Obama – five interviews before the election, and six after it, all reported by Steve Kroft.

Media Research Center's  Syrupy Minutes  How CBS's 60 Minutes Works Overtime for the Obama Left  is a comprehensive study of how wretchedly biased and politically proactive the show is today. I wonder, though, will anyone but researchers read it all?  I didn't.  I'm already convinced. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY on the left will read this "unhappiness."  Some leftist clearing house like Media Matters will skim through, find a few catch phrases, and publish a thousand words denouncing it.  That will  become the go-to citation for lefty bloggers.

Maybe, if we ever get around to "show trials," it can be introduced before sentencing.  Thank God, though, for all that MRC, and it's NewsBuster subsidiary do for this Republic.

“ Top Obama adviser David Axelrod got an earful of the liberal blogosphere's anger at the White House moments ago, when a blogger on a conference call directly called out Axelrod over White House criticism of the left, accusing the administration of "hippie punching."

"We're the girl you'll take under the bleachers but you won't be seen with in the light of day," the blogger, Susan Madrak of Crooks and Liars, pointedly told Axelrod on the call, which was organized for liberal bloggers and progressive media.

The call seemed to perfectly capture the tense dynamic that exists between the White House and the online and organized left: The fun continues

With that, Tim Kelly got in line, and when it was his turn, the Preacher asked, "Tim, what do you want me to pray about for you?"

Tim replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing."

The preacher put one finger of one hand in Tim's ear, placed his other hand on top of Tim's head, and then  prayed and prayed and prayed.  He prayed a "blue streak" for Tim Kelly, and the whole congregation joined in with great enthusiasm.

After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, "Tim, how is your hearing now?"
Tim answered, "I don't know.  It ain't 'til next week."

Coffee and

The Blues Brothers - How much for the little girl

The last time I looked, every brand of coffee on the grocer's shelf had this blurb- "100% Aribaca Bean."  Yesterday I picked up a can of Food Lion's finest because, in case you haven't noticed, coffee prices are through the el-roofo.  The blurb on the can was "100% Columbian Beans."  Well, I don't want no stinking regular coffee, I want Aribaca, so I put it back and ... wtf?  Every - I mean EVERY brand of coffee said "100% Columbian." Not one had the word Aribaca printed anywhere on the label.  Fortunately I am no coffee snob, so I bought the Food Lion for $8.95. But what gives with that?

That aside, the thought struck me that coffee is a terrific hedge against a possibly/probably coming black market economy.  The people I know who are addicted to coffee think nothing of spending $5 for a cup of Starbucks; what would they pay for a pound of Food Lion?  You're welcome.

Obama's Wars with Michael Gerson

The Bus Stops Here
“ What is most disturbing about the coverage of Bob Woodward's "Obama's Wars" is not the juicy bits of conflict and infighting; it is the fact that the White House seems pleased with the image of President Obama that emerges. - Michael Gerson, The reluctant commander in chief

Boned Jello

Of the excerpts I've seen from  Bob Woodward's "Obama's Wars,"  I thought this quote captured not just Obama, but all Democrat's and their priorities when it comes to fighting wars.

“... he set a withdrawal timetable because, “I can’t lose the whole Democratic Party.”

Winning is not a priority. Not losing the country's support; always critical during wars, is not the priority.  No, the priority is not losing  the  Democrat Party.  An organization where Code Pink holds more sway than the Boy Scouts of America, and I'm not making that up. Oh, yes, genuflect to this anti-American constituency; do worry about what Moveon.org thinks.  And get this!  The White House is pleased with Woodard's characterization of a confused and, conflicted Obama's Afghanistan direction. And why is this?

“ Since Americans are conflicted about the Afghan war, won't they be reassured to know that the commander in chief is conflicted as well?

In The reluctant commander in chief  Michael Gerson makes some head-exploding statements like; "Woodward's book appears to be genuinely reassuring about Obama in some areas," [like] "his general commitment to fighting terrorism," and "his focus on the possibility of nuclear terrorism." (I said head exploding). But he also has the good sense to recognize a real problem.

“ But a president has a number of audiences, including American troops, the allies who fight at our side and enemies who constantly take the measure of our resolve. None of those groups is likely to be impressed by America's reluctant warrior.

His final words are really all he, or I for that matter,  should have to say on the matter.

“ Yes, President Obama has sent more skilled, well-led troops to Afghanistan. But he has also created a strategic challenge for America. Our enemy is patient and determined. Our president, by his own account, is neither.

Haven't we been here before?  With this same ugly crowd?

The "Diablo Double"
Obama wants two Nobel Peace Prizes

Several years ago I purchased from a used books & documents store a pamphlet named "Regler og forskrifter for skjenke Den Fred  medal" From my days in the OSS,  I was able to recognize the document as Norwegian in origin, and roughly translate it. "Rules and Regulations for bestowing the Peace Price."

When I read this AP bulletin today, it was like deja-vu all over again.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — President Barack Obama is exhorting the world to unite around the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, challenging the United Nations to support an agreement that would create an independent Palestine and a secure Israel in a year's time.

BINGO!
OBAMA is invoking Article Twenty-seven, the automatic Peace Prize  proviso!

That's right.  Article twenty-seven  states " fremme Israel's utryddelse ved hjelp av gamle "israelsk-palestinske fredsprosessen"  Or "Any US President who works against his own country, or towards the destruction of Israel is an automatic winner!  Case closed.  Obama, having already destroyed the United States is trying for an unprecedented Diablo Double here - two Peace Prizes in the same year.  Carter failed in his bid for the Diablo; Obama; will succeed. That bastard!

ABC's Dan Harris Dismisses Tea Party, Hints:
'Complacency' Is the Big Risk for 'Gleeful' Democrats

Dan Harris-ABC NEWS, The new MAD MEN
“
ABC's Dan Harris on Saturday offered some odd spin in the debate over the Tea Party. The weekend Good Morning America co-host argued that "complacency" was the big risk for Democrats "gleeful" over the anti-big government protesters. Harris suggested, "But some Democrats, including some people in the White House, seem to be verging on gleeful when it comes to the rise of the Tea Party, because the logic seems to be, some of these people have said such extreme things in the past, that they're gonna be easier to beat." [more, MRC]
”
What to make of this spate of  left media babbling about "Republicans fearful of election results ..." or, like Harris, Democrats gleeful about prospects to the point of overconfidence?  None of it is remotely  tied to reality (so what else is new?).  I think, certainly, a DNC talking point memo was issued to network heads, about keeping a confident demeanor in the face of what is certain to be a disastrous election for them.  Lower echelon types, like Harris,  then all went to the same upper West-Side dinner party, and in that cloistered environment came away believing  this crap was gospel.  There is no critical thinker in the lot.

So a guy wals into a bodega ..

“Wake up! He's a communist!”
“ To put it succinctly, our government is occupied by malevolent, treasonous slime, and it's going to take years to extricate all of them, even with a majority of Americans dedicated to the wholesale eradication of progressivism – which is an absolute imperative. This societal infection  is so profoundly and fundamentally destructive that if I had my way, anyone willing to accept it would be stripped of their citizenship. ”
So is nationalism now more "extreme" than communism? Because nationalism is what we need, and communism is what we're getting.

“Applicants will need to bring photo identification, specifically a government issued drivers license, passport, Ohio identification card, or military identification.

All applicants should bring all handguns unloaded and securely wrapped to the police district of their choice.

A police officer will verify the applicant's identification, verify the make, model, caliber, and serial number of the weapon and do a record check on the gun.

That's what got us into this mess, and we must change.

Here's your instructor, GOP. Pay attention this time.

“ Washington elites' heads exploded when Christine O'Donnell won the Republican Senate primary in Delaware last week. Luckily they were all reading The New York Times' op-ed page at the time, so the mess their exploding heads created was minimal.

The establishment's complaints are confusing. They say O'Donnell has a problem because she's never held a job in the private sector (like our president), didn't pay her taxes (like our treasury secretary), and had her house foreclosed on (like half of the electorate).

They also accuse her of saying crazy things -- but she's running for Joe Biden's old seat, so this may be an advantage.

This week, all we've heard about is how O'Donnell once said she went on a date with a guy in high school who claimed to be a witch. (So what? Bill Clinton married one!) Bill Clinton was credibly accused of at least one forcible rape. Those two seem about equal to you?  [Where Ann also gets Barry Goldwater right.]

French Bread

TRKOF on Bread

Boned Jello

French bread and pancetta.  Mmmmm.

Our local French bread is okay, but then I'll go someplace like New York and get the "real thing."  Oye.  Which brings me to my latest "Stuff the Works."

When I bought this bread machine from Woot  last month (I think it was about $50), MoSup was annoyed.  Why?  Because she hates stuff sitting on counters.  I mean, anything.  So, what with the ice cream machine, Food Saver, panini grill, toaster and  coffee maker, she sees interminable clutter. "And, you won't use it," she added.

"You said that about the Food Saver too ...
Didn't you?"

I had her.

I always wanted a bread machine.  Several years ago I bought Beard on Bread, and went nuts for a few months.  My bread never really stacked up with bakery bread, however, so what the hell.  But!  When I got around to making French bread with the machine a few weeks ago, I went deja-vu nuts all over again .  IMO, this bread is the equal to, or better than, the best I've had.  Deliciously crunchy crust all around; lovely soft texture betwixt.  If I was put in prison, on a diet of (this) bread and water; Brier Patch!

The ingredient list for French bread is as simple as simple can be (Cuisinart recipe) .
  1. water
  2. flour
  3. salt
  4. yeast
Which made me wonder why my past attempts at making French bread failed?  Interestingly, once you plop the ingredients in, and select "French/Italian bread," the timer sets to a range of 3:50 regardless of it being a 1, 1½, or 2 pound loaf.  All but 1:05  is used in kneading, rising, and kneading.

condensationThe recipes I just looked at all call for about 3 hours, beginning too end; at an oven temp of 350 º, and a cooking time of around 40-50 minutes.  So, no matter how you slice it, the machine cooks for an additional 20-25 minutes.  I assume at a lower heat.  I've also noted that when doing French bread, the window is covered with condensation not observed with other breads. My guess is that there is a higher concentration of water, or the "rising" cycle temperature is higher?  Finally, there is no sugar, or honey used to feed the yeast. That differs from other recipes, and must enter into the equation.

! Just now realized that I make my pizza dough using the same ingredients; flour, water, salt, and yeast - no sugar.  Except I don't let the dough rise.  A pizza king gave me the tip. Try it.

Yum, that didn't last long.

University of Virginia political professor Larry Sabato has become kind of a network news Dr. Phil;  a pronouncement about anything, all based on his "internals."    I began tuning him out a few years ago after detecting a liberal media hum in his prognostications.  Anyway, it's this befuddling comment that stood out,  for me ...
