Chernobyl sounds scary

“Three Mile Island” and “Chernobyl”
sounds scary, right?
We're Toast! We're Toast!

“ There is no question that the events in Japan are ongoing and serious. That said, I believe a lot of people are being misled by much of the news coverage.  Take a look at these headlines from the Christian Science Monitor and from Channel News Asia -

US experts fear 'Chernobyl-like' crisis for Japan

“Three Mile Island” and “Chernobyl” sounds scary, right?
Nuked
Let me ask a couple of questions?  How many were killed by the Three Mile Island incident?

100?

10,000?

100,000?

Answer here
”
via Nuclear power perspective. by James Watts

Some of the comments :

“ Compare those figures with the deaths from renewables. in one incident alone over 170,000 died in China when the Banqiao hydroelectric dam failed. Greenpeace et al never ever mention this of course.

UNSCEAR says 4,000 deaths attributable to Chernobyl whereas Greenpeace says 100,000 (but they would, wouldn't they?)

...  it looks like the Japanese reactor now has no secondary containment (and it was not a secondary concrete pressure vessel as at TMI) but as in the UK, a simple corrugated iron building on a steel frame.

EVIL

Evil
Ondskan
(2003) NR

Adapted from a best-selling novel, this Swedish drama follows rebellious teenager Erik (Andreas Wilson) as he's expelled from high school for fighting and sent to the prestigious Stjärsnberg Academy. Having endured many beatings from his father, Erik is dismayed to face a similar threat from the academy's senior students, who bully the younger ones mercilessly. But this time, Erik is determined not to crack and lash out in violence.

Genre:     Foreign Dramas, Scandinavia, Swedish Language

This movie is: Violent (fist fighting)

EVIL

I was looking for an embeddable clip from he movie EVIL, and landed on Amazon.  Started playing the clip, and it went on and on ... and horry clap.  It was the whole film - free to Amazon Prime, or $4.99 for 2 day rental.  (Here's a 60 second trailer)  I watched it last night on NetFlix /ROKU.

Of course I really liked it, else we wouldn't be doing this. Swedish/subtitled, it was not at all what I expected after watching the first five minutes. Think Tom Brown's School Days, complete with a Harry Flashman bully.  Do kids read Tom Brown anymore?

What started out looking like another mad-at-the-world juvenile delinquent movie turned out to be an uplifting Good v. Evil  piece. Violent?  Fist fights and hazing like West Point and Annapolis kids experienced before  those institutions went co-ed.  Your wives and girlfriends will prolly like this film, as long as they're not watching in the same room.

PS - Jake, if you're here, this movie is your biography.  You are Eric.

Hitler Was A Union Buster

HITLER WAS A UNION BUSTER
Wisconsin Unions

Steven Hayward managed to slip away from business long enough to visit the  capitol in the daylight, and capture the scene inside at the moment Governor Walker signed the bill eliminating collective bargaining for some classes of Wisconsin public employees. Above is another quickly-edited, four-minute highlight reel.

"The scene is really rather feeble, as you will see, but nonetheless conveys the infantilism of the modern left. This time I offer some voice-over commentary of my own, but couldn't resist calling in reinforcements from Monty Python on a couple of points. The old saying "It's all over but the shouting" almost doesn't apply, since the shouting going on is so lame. "

Comrade factory workers on strike

Re: infantilism of the modern left: The part I obviously liked was the "Hitler Was a Union Buster" sign.  As opposed to ...?  All the other totalitarian regimes -- that encourage the PFW (People's Factory Workers) to strike for better wages?   Regimes, btw, that many of these organize protesters represent.

Bart's Room

Bart Got A Room

I love coming of age movies because I hope to myself one day.  Srsly, COA films are usually a safe bet to entertain without any serious unpleasantness.  Bart Got A Room is really a very good movie for something I never heard of, but then I don't follow them.   William H. Macy is seldom (ever?)  in a bad movie, and he is definitely the star of this one.  He plays the divorced (from Cheryl Hines) father who wants to be his son's (Steve Kaplan) age, and treats him like a younger brother.  Bart refers to a friend of the son who is such a loser, that by telling his parents "Even Bart Has _____" gets mom and dad on his team.  What Bart got in this movie is a date to the prom, and a room in the hotel for afterwards.  Juice, you will like this. Oh, it's available on NetFlix instant.

Japanese Nuke Explosion II

Huge blast at Japan nuclear power plant

Derailed Train Post Quake

WWII is over .  I have great respect for the Japanese ability to make consumer products I must have, and for making me ROR at their cultural idiosyncrasies.   The good news about this blast is, according to the text,  the metal reactor container inside was not damaged, and radiation levels around the plant had fallen after the explosion.

From a selfish pov, however, this will pretty much stop any attempt on our part to overcome the Three Mile Island cultural hysteria, and start building nuclear power plants in the USofA.  The antis will be frothing at the mouth.  So, no oil production+no nuke power = third world nation.

Aside: I renew my request that congress make clear that if San Francisco falls into the ocean, congressmen whose congressional districts no longer exist will be immediately removed.

Guess what the first new movie suggestion was?  The third movie of the trilogy,  The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.    I never came close to being a Star Wars trilogy freak, having skipped the last one, but this!  I want more .. more ..more!  Screw college basketball.

Stuff That Works
Boned JelloBoned Jello
Of all the Woot stuff I've bought, some of it I use.  One that I'm delighted with is the Cuisinart Bread Maker.  It's the only bread maker I've owned, so all of them may be as good or better, but there you have it.   One of the things that happened however, was that the vibration from the kneading action caused the machine to walk off the counter-  Ka-Smash.  I feared the worse, but no.  It started right up again, although the control module (upper right in picture) was hanging by wires, and the cover was half-way across the kitchen floor.  I popped the control box back in, and used heat resistant duct tape to hold the lid pieces together.  That was 4-5  months ago, and it's working fine.  But that's not what I wanted to tell you.

Boned Jello
I made a special recipe MoSup found, but instead of using store bought vermicelli, I decided to make my own.  I used to have a pasta roller that had a cutter attachment, but my daughter wanted it so I gave it to her.  Now, I would never have tried this before, but I discovered that the Cuisinart's Basic Pasta Recipe makes such pliable, easy to work with dough, that I don't even need any flour when rolling it out.  I rolled some out on the counter and then cut strips with a kitchen knife. The strips were irregular as all hell, but that became part of the charm.  I forgot how good fresh pasta tastes, not to mention the fast cooking time.  Time from thought to noodles- about 30 minutes.

While I'm at it, my most used recipe is the cranberry pumpkin walnut bread; I made a dozen just for Christmas presents.  Takes about 90 minutes from beginning to end .  (The entire recipe book here)

Grey Lady Giving Succor

On Cue:  Grey Lady Does Her Thing

“
As public sector employees in Wisconsin begin to "shoulder more of the burden" for their pensions and health care they "will provide immediate relief for struggling towns, school districts and state agencies, and help them balance their budgets," reports the New York Times.

"But new pension cost estimates, ordered before Governor Walker was elected...are expected to show that the current contribution levels to the state pension system are too meager. More money, from employers and employees in some combination, will be needed, and perhaps much more in coming years."
Grey Lady Giving Succor
According to economists, the problem won't be unique to Wisconsin, and doing away with collective bargaining won't fix it. According to labor officials, economics are evil and anyone who says that public pensions are in trouble is the Antichrist.

Driving on the right side may be left

Why Some Countries Drive on the Right; others Left

Sarah Waves Hello to Kathy Griffin

Among  the many possibilities given at What I Learned Today, I'm going with the driving on the left as being the the most practical.  The across the chest move is so awkward, not to mention dangerous.

“ ... if you were right handed and you met some unsavory company on the road, you could draw your weapon, typically attached to your left side, with your right hand and bring it to bear quickly against the person who is going the opposite way of you on your right; all the while, controlling the reigns with your left hand. ”

Barry: What can I say?

What can I say?

I was born in Hawaii

How about saying,

"Look, I was always under the impression that I was born in Hawaii.  I guess my grandparents knew I wasn't, and tried to make up for it by getting a certification of live birth.  I found it, and naturally thought it was like a real birth certificate.

I knew nothing about this until Bill Ayers, who was writing my autobiography said, Barry, we have sort of a problem.  All your relatives say you were born in Kenya.  I checked, and you have no record of being born here.

I said, so what, my mother was a citizen?

He said, nuh-uh.  She was under-age and could not transfer US citizenship to you.  You have dual British and Indonesian citizenship, as near as I can tell.

By that time I had already decided to be president, and there was no turning back; and it's a stupid law anyway, aimed at keeping the black immigrant down.

You could say that Barry.  It's a start.

Michael Moore shows his ass again

Michael Moore Calls Out the Mobs In Wisconsin,
Bring Your Cameras to Capture Any Thuggery

Cameras? I have believed for some time now that this ilk really do believe the stuff they regurgitate (there is no critical thought involved).  I'm not saying you can't find any, but off-hand, how many stories in the past 3-4 years contained verified accounts of conservatives attacking anyone?   How about progressives, union thugs, and pinksters?

I account for this seeming conundrum - they read and listen, but remain uninformed -  by blaming it on the left's refusal to hear or read, let alone believe, any news account that does not emanate from Moonbattery Central. Do you know how many of them have ever watched FOX News straight-away?  Zero.  There is not a Moonbat alive who has ever read, or listened to a non sanctioned (leftist) media account, unless it was in response to some specific link from another outraged  bat.  Not one.  Which would leave anyone ignorant, let alone plumb stupid.  Michael Moore is an exception.  He's a hard core Marxist trying to foment communist revolution.

Ann Discusses Wisconsin Unions

Addendum
(to UNIONS LOSE IN WI)
“ Fine, we understand that Wisconsin public sector employees like the system that pays them an average of $76,500 per year, with splendiferous benefits, and are fighting like wildcats against any proposed reforms to that system. But it's madness to keep treating people who are promoting their own self-interest as if they are James Meredith walking into the University of Mississippi.

This isn't how we usually view people fighting for their own economic interests.

“   "In 30 minutes, 18 state senators undid 50 years of civil rights in Wisconsin. Their disrespect for the people of Wisconsin and their rights is an outrage that will never be forgotten," said Democratic Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller.
