“ Washed-up shrew and ex-Speaker Nancy Pelosi is back making news. First time since guaranteeing her Democrats would keep control of the House  in 2010.  Ahem.  And WOW!  It appears she's trying to keep the Republican Party from doing itself harm—  by nominating the wrong person!  Someone unelectable. After Newt's surprising win in the South Carolina primary,  Pelosi adamantly stated: “ He's not going to be President of the United States. That's not going to happen. Let me just make my prediction and stand by it, it isn't going to happen. There is something I know. The Republicans, if they choose to nominate him that's their prerogative. I don't even think that's going to happen. ” Like you, I'm wondering what she could possibly know about Newt that could be so damaging?  Just off the top of my head, I offer these five possibilities.  She knows that ... ....  a 19-year-old English woman said Newt sexually assaulted (raped) her after she met him at a pub near the Oxford University in 1969 ....  in 1978 Newt raped another woman in an Arkansas hotel room ....  far from being the college professor he claims to have been, Newt won't release any document that proves he even graduated from kindergarten ....  Speaker, Newt  "earmarked " funds that enriched his wife. ....  In 1996, Speaker Newt certified Bob Dole (as a presidential candidate)  in spite of the fact that the Kansas Republican Party refused to  certify him, thus committing fraud. Let's hope it's none of those things.  Nobody could possibly overcome such scandal. No Republican anyway. ”

After a several year's long battle with the IRS, during which time they raided our bank accounts, jeopardized our credit rating, and unleashed the state on us ( looking for its share of the spoils), we finally won last year.  Yes, we got our money back. We also got a check for the  interest on the held funds (about 4% ).  So there you have it.  The best (relatively safe) return on your money today comes from getting the Feds to errantly seize your money, keep it for some time before proving they erred, and get the bonus money.  How's that for cups half filled?   Unfortunately the state was more recalcitrant.  They forked over, but no interest from them,  and no notice in the newspaper that they erred by (publicly) placing a lien.  But still ... . You're welcome.

The is a mash of stuff that I hope will result in a salient point about Obama. Last week I confessed  my addiction to British movies and television productions.  Commenters suggested a number of their own favorites. Of  those I hadn't already seen — She Fell Among Thieves - not instant watch Prime Minister: ... is not available Cadfael  - added to queue Porterhouse Blue is not available to watch instantly Bounder is not available Something I neglected to mention was that I fear many who view my all time favorite, Top Gear,  watch  on BBC America.  Fie! The BBC, unlike American television, will allow a broadcast to run long.  Thus, in its original form a given program may run 65-75 minutes.  If you watch the series on Netflix (or Amazon), you see it all,  without advertisements.  The same segment on BBC America is first trimmed to 60 minutes, and then at least another 22 minutes for commercials.  What you miss is, in my opinion, the the most endearing stuff, especially the "news."  I'm just saying. Moving closer to the point now, a series I neglected to mention is  "House of Cards." “ After the resignation of Margaret Thatcher ("Nothing lasts forever. Even the longest, the most glittering reign must come to an end someday."]), the governing Conservative Party are about to elect a new leader. Francis Urquhart, Member of Parliament (MP) and Chief Whip, introduces viewers to the contestants, from which the popular and decent Henry ('Hal') Collingridge emerges victorious. Urquhart is secretly contemptuous ("no background and no bottom") but expects promotion to a senior position in the Cabinet. After the general election, which the party wins by a reduced majority, Urquhart makes his suggestions for a cabinet reshuffle but Collingridge – citing Harold Macmillan's political demise after sacking half his Cabinet – effects no changes at all. Urquhart now aims at ousting Collingridge and is confirmed in his resolve by his wife, Elizabeth. (Wikipedia) Appearing  in four episodes in 1990 (and rated one of the 100 Best in BBC History), on Netflix you get  11 one-hour-long episodes. It's a deliciously spectacular production about behind the scenes political intrigue and manipulation in GB.  Which brings me to Obama.  Of a sudden there are cracks beginning to appear.  They were always there, but Big Media and Big Government, acting as Obama's bodyguard of lies, kept them out of the mainstream. Now, stories like the one posted below, where Yahoo calls Obama incompetent.  Where a federal judge agrees to hear a suit filed about his dubious citizenship (ordering him to testify in person!).  Hell, they've even served up an Obama Willie Horton. Lots of little things like that make me believe that a Francis Urquhart is at work.  The question is who, on whose behalf?

“ In a LAT op-ed piece Naomi Oreskes, professor of history at UC San Diego  (hey. it could have been gender studies) had an epiphany.  Recently I had jury duty, and during jury selection something remarkable occurred. Early in the proceedings, the judge posed a hypothetical question to the 60 or so potential jurors in the room: "If I were to send you out now and ask you to render a verdict, what would it be? How many of you would vote not guilty?" A few raised their hands. "How many would vote guilty?" A few more raised their hands. ... That, of course, was the wrong answer, and the judge proceeded to explain why. Baby steps.  But the light bulb (CFL, natch) lit.  In my travels, I have met many, many people who have told me that they are not in denial about climate change; they simply don't know enough to decide. It strikes me that these people aren't unlike my fellow jurors at the start of jury selection. They are trying to keep an open mind, something that we are routinely enjoined to do in many other aspects of daily life. But .. Since the mid-1990s, there has been clear-cut evidence that the climate is changing because of human activities: burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests. For the last decade or so it has been increasingly clear that these changes are accelerating, and worrisome. I think we've heard enough.  At this point I wanted to yell "show us your tits!"  I Googled "Naomi Oreskes nude," hoping  she had some redeeming quality, but  no. Awk!   I then checked her out at Watts Up With That.  Anthony Watts's  climate change possee  lumps  her (Naomi Oreskes ... suggested that scientists should study history...." ) with the  gaggle of  “new AGU” climate clowns who amuse real climatologists with their buffoonery. “ I cannot begin to describe the delicious sense of irony I felt when I listened to a panel of people who have no demonstrated skill or expertise in selling messages to the public, trying to tell scientists how they should sell a message to the public. Ugh (Roll Over Horrid Newt) I'm not sure how I feel about Newt winning South Carolina, but it's not terrible.  What I find most gratifying is how and why he won it.  By energizing  the conservative base when he slammed John King for opening the last debate with a question about his wife.  The crowd went wild; the video went viral.  Sarah Palin immediately sensed it, saying his performance would help him" “soar even more”   It was Ronald Reagan asserting  "This is my microphone, I paid for it" during the Nashua primary debate in 1980, (a line  purloined from Spencer Tracy in "State Of The Union," when his character was about to be cut off in debate.  A defining moment for Reagan.   It was Vice President Spiro Agnew during a televised speech in 1969, calling  the press "nattering nabobs of negativism" and war critics  "an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as 'intellectuals.'"  America went nuts, and the press ducked for cover.  This is vintage 1992 Newt, going for the throat of a corrupt Democrat House of Representatives.  He was unparalleled.  I only hope he, if elected, doesn't become 1994 Newt, all coiffed, gushy, and wanting to be loved by everyone.Or, God forbid, 2010 Newt, who promoted man caused global warming with Nancy Pelosi (stab me in the liver). Aside- Speaking of the movie "State of the Union," here's the speech every politician could, and should, make tomorrow. We'd all be better for it.

At least 70 ACORN/Project Vote employees have been convicted of voter registration fraud in a dozen states since 2006. According to a 2009 House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform report, approximately a third of the 1.2 million new registrations turned in by the two groups in 2008 were fraudulent.
