Reckless driving? Or well planned trap?

On Medicare Offensive

“

Democratic strategists were certain that, with Paul Ryan on the Republican ticket, Medicare had become a better issue than ever for them. How do we know this? Democrats said so.

Ryan is the author of a Medicare reform plan that Democrats insist would “end Medicare as we know it.” That’s their mantra. Mitt Romney, who picked Ryan as his vice presidential running mate last week, has a similar plan of his own.

Moving quickly, the Romney campaign packaged that two-step response into a crisp, 30-second TV ad that began being aired yesterday.  The campaign plans a large buy with the ad, particularly in swing states.

I'd like to think that Romney-Ryan "set a trap," as do the Weekly Standard, but I suspect it was a case of the Obama campaign ( probably the most inept, tone-deaf campaign in history)    being guilty of reckless driving.  Nevertheless, the ad is brilliant, and hooray for them for running it.  I don't think McCain would have.

today’s deep question

Why would the National Weather Service need to purchase large quantities of powerful ammo? That’s the question many are asking after the federal agency followed in the footsteps of the Department of Homeland Security in putting out a solicitation for 46,000 rounds of hollow point bullets. (cont)

Okay, I *know* it’s absurd, but doesn’t it raise the hair on the back of your head a little to see every federal agency arming itself to put down domestic insurrection 90 days ahead of an election that the incumbent big gov guys are likely to lose?

This makes about as much sense as our local public school police force wanting their own SWAT team.

Why does every federal agency need its own police force?

No, I don't give a crap if people abstain from eating meat. I enjoy me a good veggie burger from time to time.  It's the vegan-freaks who've turned it into yet another alternative religion - political movement that annoy me, and every one else (statistically) in the known universe.  It's good that nature culls that  herd occasionally.

The Bedwetter Caucus
GOP 'pros' trash the Republican ticket.

“

Res Ipsa Loquitor

That didn't take long. Much as we predicted last week, the Republican Party's Bedwetter Caucus has emerged on schedule to explain why Mitt Romney can't possibly win the election with Paul Ryan on the ticket.

"GOP pros fret over Paul Ryan," reported Politico, the website with perfect Beltway pitch, on Tuesday: "In more than three dozen interviews with Republican strategists and campaign operatives—old hands and rising next-generation conservatives alike—the most common reactions to Ryan ranged from gnawing apprehension to hair-on-fire anger that Romney has practically ceded the election."

Mr. Romney's catastrophic blunder, it seems, is that he chose a running mate who does more than talk about reforming government. He's really tried to do it, and this is simply not done in Presidential politics. (Full WSJ Opinion)

How frustrating for the GOP.  To have pushed and pulled all their levers, and produce the candidate all America have been waiting for, only to see them—first John McCain and now Mitt Romney— bollix up with a conservative running mate.  It's a good thing they'll still have their day job at the DNC to go to. *spit*

Aside:  I know. Politico have perfect political pitch only if you're playing the  "K Street Waltz" or the "Obama Cha-Cha."  Don't matter here.

L' Affaire Farewell

   At The Cinema

This is one of the damnedest movies I've ever seen.  Based on my liking "Lost in Siberia," NetFlix recommended it.  The cast were all furriners with Russian and French names; it was subtitled.  Fast  paced and absolutely riveting, but that's not why I was gob-smacked. Of a sudden,  amidst all the nyets and ouis,  Ronald Reagan pops up  (played by a very convincing Fred Ward), and there's new meaning.  This, it seems, has  historical underpinnings. Totally unexpected that, which sensation you will now miss because I told you.

L'affaire Farewell (English: The Farewell Affair) is a 2009 French film directed by Christian Carion, starring Guillaume Canet and Emir Kusturica. The film is an espionage thriller loosely based on actions of the high-ranking KGB official, Vladimir Vetrov. It was released in the United States in June 2010, under the title Farewell. (Wikipedia)

How riveting was it?  I meant only to get a sense of whether I wanted to see more at a later date.  It ended at 2:30 AM, and then another hour spent digesting it.  Five Stars from me.  Yawning here.

He’s staring into the middle distance as he says all of this, as if addressing an invisible, unpersuadable audience. But when I ask if this episode has made him regret being such an outspoken defender of the banking industry, he looks at me point blank. “I’m an outspoken defender of the truth,” he corrects me. “Everyone is afraid of retaliation and retribution. We recently had an event with a hundred small bankers here, and 85 percent of them said they can’t challenge the regulation because of the potential retribution. That’s a terrible thing. Okay? This letter in the local rag tonight

Wayne A (Letters, Aug. 4) asks "Can someone tell me why he/she would vote for Barack Obama for president again?"

It's quite simple, really. I remember what happened the last time the Republicans had the White House and I don't want my country to go through that again.

ARCHIE W

I'll bet you're like me with  people like Archie.  Who are they?  What do they do all day? Then there's  this.

For what seems like months we've seen daily reports of Obama's slipping  approval numbers (no incumbent has ever been reelected with approval under 50%).  He's out of money, and nobody shows up for his  speeches.  He's totally out of the closet now, spouting the hard Marxist line in every speech.  Every charge his campaign have made against Romney, and now Paul Ryan, are deemed  falsehoods by even the Washington Post and other leftist broadsheets— yet the Obamas keep airing them.  That's hard core folks.  So he's toast.  Right?

But then you read, as I did:

Zogby Poll — the first survey conducted after Romney announced Ryan as his vice presidential choice — shows the Romney/Ryan ticket tied with Obama/Biden at 46 percent.

Tied?  WTF?   Tied?  I cannot fathom any of this.  Makes no sense.  There are millions like me who don't get Archie; he may as well be from Mars.  And, there's not a chance in hell that the Archies will be allowed  to destroy what's left of this country. Archie probably feels the same way, so, it will come to confrontation of some sort, especially if Obama is reimposed.  But Archie will be wearing a black leather coat and driving a government truck when he comes for us, so we'd better have a plan that's more substantial than saying "I've got 20 guns and 12,000 rounds of ammo."  They all go into Archie's truck if you're by yourself.

Maryland Delegation Hit Hardest
Before the 2008 Democrat coronation of Obama, the FNC booth was outfitted with urinals that allowed Brit Hume and company to report while taking a wee. The urinals emptied directly onto the floor.  Evidently Obama himself walked into range while glad-handing the MD delegation.  Unfortunately the lads had eaten salty peanuts and couldn't muster a stream.

And there you have it.  When I asked Roger Ailes about it, he winked and said "I know nothing."   I promised I wouldn't report it for 4 years.  Close enough. Anyway, that's what I see.

How do you photograph one of the most secretive countries in the world?  For Charlie Crane the answer was simple, photograph what they want you to see. If there is no possibility of getting underneath the surface then the answer was to photograph the surface itself. This series is taken from a larger body of work in Pyongyang, the capital city of North Korea... Although not commonly thought of as a holiday destination all these photographs have been taken at tourist sites throughout the city.

More pictures here from Doug Ross, who comments:

Remember: this is the inevitable endgame for the Democrat Party's incessant, eight-decade drive for ever more centralized, authoritarian government. Their various mandates -- governing energy, health care, retirement, automobile design, shower heads, you name it -- must be enforced through compulsion. That is: they must use force over the individual to compel adherence to their unconstitutional dictates. That is what the Democrat Party's failed policies must inevitably devolve into: tyranny. -

“…Everything I said at the 2008 convention about then-candidate Obama still stands today, and in fact the predictions made about the very unqualified and inexperienced Community Organizer’s plans to “fundamentally transform” our country are unfortunately coming true. This year is a good opportunity for other voices to speak at the convention and I’m excited to hear them. As I’ve repeatedly said, I support Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in their efforts to replace President Obama at the ballot box, and I intend to focus on grassroots efforts to rally Independents and the GOP base to elect Senate and House members so a wise Congress is ready to work with our new President to get our country back on the right path. This is imperative. As President Clinton said in 2008 while candidate Obama and lapdogs in the media were thrashing his wife’s record and reputation, this is “…the biggest fairy tale.” For the sake of America’s solvency and sovereignty we must close this nonsensical book in November…”-

Whence Olbermann's America

“

“A liberal,” Robert Frost said, “is a man too broadminded to take his own side in a quarrel.” I’ve debated many liberals who clearly took sides…in favor of any antagonist the US might oppose. Ronald Reagan’s ambassador to the UN, Jeane Kirkpatrick, described this as the worldview of the “blame America first” crowd.  The reflex is often acquired young.

Why did those kids think their land was a nasty and oppressive place, like an Olbermannian “Worst Nation in the World!”? Frequent answers include school, where students seem to absorb the lesson that American culture hates women, minorities, poor people, and rain forests; and the media, including news, but especially TV or movies, where cheats and murderers often are businessmen trying to snuff competitors and increase profits, rather than the motley and wretched cases that overwhelmingly fill real crime reports.

I encountered it vividly some years back helping judge a school civics competition as a Colorado lawmaker. For part of their project, students from an affluent Denver suburb shared an “updated” Pledge of Allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag—because the Supreme Court doesn’t enforce the First Amendment—of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands—an imperial power that swept the native inhabitants off their land—one nation under God—because the Supreme Court still doesn’t enforce the First Amendment, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all white, male, heterosexual, upper middleclass property owners.” [Comtinued]

There's a lesson here.  That lesson is they could care less what we think, or that we're on to them.  Lest you think I'm being defeatist—no.  Things will ultimately sort themselves out, but it will not be pleasant.  I'll be in heaven and really won't care,  what with my single perpetual virgin, endless pizza and bottomless can of beer.

(Does Pelosi have the State Dept. concession for Muslum babushkas?)

Apropos of nothing, I have another "succession" question.

I've periodically asked what would happen if California, say north of Orange county,  fell into the sea?  Would congressmen from from that area be seated when the House next convened?  I mean, they would be representing nobody.

Last time I brought this up, Pelosi was House Speaker.   I deduced that she could stay as speaker regardless  (until voted out by the members) since there is no constitutional requirement for the job.  Hell, you could be elected Speaker (or Pope for that matter).

Res Ipsa LoquitorSince nobody could cite any applicable law or statute, this is an area that needs to be addressed before chaos ensues—when it does happen.  Now I have another question.  Again, this is merely an academic exercise, on the order of "Death of a President."

What if Joe Biden strangled Obama?  Biden is a nut case,  and a committed socialist, but I don't see him as someone who wants to be a modern-day Rudolf Hess or Herman Goering (second in command to a monster).  That's what prompted the question.  Of course,  the second Obama breathed his last,  Vice President Biden would assume the presidency.   Could he pardon himself, and carry on?  The best argument is yes, as long as he does it before he's impeached.  It appears I've answered my own question.  It would be a win-win for Biden, but a terrible precedent for the country.
