Downton Abbey

Should Be To the Manor Born

Res Ipsa Loquitor

Res Ipsa LoquitorI feel so ashamed.  I've gone and got myself hooked on Downton Abbey, an early twentieth century Brit (Masterpiece Theater) soap opera.  Never did  bother with that "Upstairs-Downstairs" thing that was all the rage in the 1970's; something I dismissed as only fitting for women, pussies and shut-ins.  I think it was much like Downton; focused on  the relationship between the landed gentry and their servants.

I adore Downton Abbey (so far; the smart money says I won't finish it).  It has everything; women to lust after, villains to hate; and nice furniture.

I was—am— someone who always felt more comfortable with the past.  My (and cuzzin ricky's) Granny was from a lower echelon of the English  landed class.  Family owned orchards, and had a nice stone manse.

Against her family's wishes, she fell in love with a  divinity student graduate, not of her class, and ran off to America with him.  When he was dragged to his death (after siring four daughters likety-split),  by horses spooked by a passing automobile's back-fire, she became a house servant in the South Dakota governor's mansion.  Scrubbed floors.  Later, when my own father was crowned by a Nazi mortar shell, she moved in to care for us while mom worked.

I respect a culture that hangs horse thieves straight away, and where a gentleman would never utter the word "fuck"  in front of a proper lady.  The Great War saw the end of that storybook era in England, but I would have been comfortable in it, as Lord or footman, although I am better suited to Droit du seigneur  than to polishing the silver.

PS   After watching the first season on NetFlix,  I was flummoxed to discover that was all they had.  So, for the first time, I found something useful in Amazon's Prime instant watch video service; they have the full set.

And when KFC offered a "Hillary" meal, consisting of two small breasts and two large thighs?

Now KFC is offering the "Obama Cabinet Bucket."  It consists of nothing but left wings and chicken shit.

The IRS wants to secure the surveillance equipment quickly – it posted a solicitation on June 6 and is looking to close the deal by Monday, June 10.  The agency already has a company lined up for the order but is not commenting on the details.

“The Internal Revenue Service intends to award a Purchase Order to an undisclosed Corporation,” reads the solicitation.

“The following descriptions are vague due to the use and nature of the items,” it says. [Full]

San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano has been pushing a bill through the Legislature
which has the potential of turning all schools into beta test sites for social experiments.

AB 1266 would require a student to be permitted to use the male or female bathrooms and locker rooms in public schools, based on the student’s gender self-identification.

Lawmakers who support this bill claim they are protecting civil rights by creating laws for transgender persons.
[I am not making this up]

You know what I thought of while reading this?  A movie I recently started to watch, Shooter, about a sniper.  That's right.  I quit watching the movie because I  cannot watch Danny Glover anymore than I can stomach the legion of  Tom Ammianos in this country.  Click-click.  Someone, please, make the case that people like this ought not be dropped into a volcano.

Those are comments from the NetFlix "Knuckleball!" review.   I agree with both, although milking an extra 20 minutes or so  was no problem for me.  Rather, like a good book, I was happy to have more pages at the end.  And it really doesn't matter whether you're baseball fan any more than not being a concert pianist lessens the impact of the wonderful  Note By Note - The Making Of The Steinway.  I've been great friends with Tim Wakefield—by proxy.  Guys just like him, like Bill Killoran.

Ruth Wins

What I See

 Of Spooks
Res Ipsa Loquitor
Harry and Ruth, unfulfilled.

I just finished the 85th and last episode of Spooks.  Early on I began seeing parallels with  MASH.  You know, where the dominant left-wing nutters (Alan Alda) came to dominate the scripting.  SPOOKS episodes began to feature almost hilariously bizarre plots,  premises and other nincompoopery, in order to accommodate the vision.   The last of these were the final episodes.

Brit and Russian governments worked feverishly to enter into a strategic partnership; the villainous CIA the foil working to stop it. I admit that I have very little faith in our CIA, believing it was decisively turned by the Clinton regime into a political tool that visibly worked to  sabotage President G.W. Bush's foreign policy in league with leading Democrats.  Nevertheless, it is galling to see us pummeled by the Brits,  whose own secret services have harbored so many of the Philby ilk.

Anyway, this is entertainment, and the final episode achieved what MASH did not, a finale that had some sweetness and poignancy.  Have there been any sereis that took such delight in killing all of the leading characters?  I liked it.  I could have done better though. I'd have done Harry.

Now. I've reached that age (or maybe I'm singularly blessed)  where I can look at any woman, of any age, and see inherent beauty.  There are for me then, no ugly women.  Well, who weren't born ugly.  And even then,  inner beauty and personality can overcome. (Conversely, women who are nominally beautiful become ugly shortly after voting Democrat.)  Of all the girl agents in Spooks (MI-5), I'm saying that Ruth Evershard (Nicola Walker ) is the winner, all things considered.  Go figure.

What I Saw At The Coup

Bracken: What I Saw At The Coup

Short-fuse fiction by Matt Bracken intended to spread alarm among progressives, in the spirit of dispiriting them from ever attempting such a mad folly in order to cling to power.

Res Ipsa Loquitor
Excerpts:

“We could both be facing prison time just for talking like this.”

“Not as long as we’re in power. You know how I know? Operation Fast and Furious. At least four hundred dead and there was no blowback that we couldn’t handle. Our media stuck right with us all the way through. For me, that was the final test. We can do almost anything if we get the timing right, and most of the media stays with us.”

I replied, “But those were Mexicans. And not two thousand.”

[...]

Only proven-loyal teams of agents were used to arrest the handful of well-known people on the list. The warrants were prepared by tried and true federal attorneys, and signed off by trusted judges. Dennis did not only make a secret list of

The snipers grew ever more brazen and their numbers multiplied daily. They were emboldened by accounts of the murders of federal officials that were splashed across what was left of the internet, no matter how we tried to control and contain it. They freely posted comments such as, “You can take away our rights, but we still get to vote under Rule 308,” (which I have since learned refers to a popular rifle caliber).

enemies to arrest—he also prepared a list of key personnel we could depend on to run the dodgy paperwork through the federal law enforcement system with no hassles. Mostly they used “National Security Letters” instead of regular warrants, because then no questions were asked. Dennis and his little circle had mastered the architecture. It was seamless, and for the most part it went like clockwork, especially at the beginning.

Once each of the arrested was “tagged and bagged,” the normal federal prison bureaucracy handled them like so many UPS or Fed-Ex packages.

[...]

Back to my story. The first real jolt indicating a serious problem with the plan came when television reporter Cathy Carlsen was killed in Norfolk, shot dead while covering the commissioning of the Harvey Milk, the Navy’s newest destroyer. That she was killed was bad enough. That it happened on a “secure” naval base—a federal installation—made it much worse. Her blood splattered across the Admirals’ white uniforms made quite a picture. The videos…

The DOJ memo (downloadable here as a PDF) states the administration “believes that a gun ban will not work without mandatory gun confiscation,” according to the NRA, and thinks universal background checks “won’t work without requiring national gun registration.” Obama has yet to publicly support national registration or firearms confiscation, although the memo reveals his administration is moving in that direction.

FULL STORY HERE

And this ...

"Obama puts people in positions that mirror him. Eric Holder, you name it, they're doing Obama's bidding. Everybody. Susan Rice and Samantha Power, they are Obama, and there's a context for what's happening. Herbert Meyer, if I may quote him again, asserted that essentially what's taking place in the United States right now is a coup, not a violent coup, and not a million artistic coup, but nevertheless a takeover of a government, and it's being done by the Obama administration [...] clearly there's a coup d'etat going. You know it and I know it."

I enjoyed the hell out of this 25 minute HD drive along Switzerland's Gotthard Pass.  Truly, at times I was really there. I did think the driver was a bit of a pussy, but then we didn't  die.  At one point I got so annoyed with a white BMW in front of us—it seemingly  sped up every time we were about to pass— that I was actually hurling invective at him! Just like in real life. For your edification I've provided this appropriate oath to shout at the driver; one that he may understand.

"Sortez de ma manière tout putain de trou du cul!"

I like that the only audio is the sound of the Ferrari's naturally aspirated V-8,  and throaty exhaust.  Especially in tunnels.  Then I remembered the Swiss fighter video of yore, with the  Ameno-Era soundtrack.  Here it is, all 3:41 of it.  There are a few stretches where it seems to fit right in.  DIY.  You're welcome.

The purpose of this site, is to keep friends and family (at least those that are interested) updated on our South America Odyssey, and provide a convenient place that can occasionally be visited to see what we are up to.

May 31, 2013

As you know, we took care of the house in Denver, by renting to a really nice couple that we are sure will care for the place.  On May 9th, we hopped on a plane (which was hit by lightening en-route) and flew down to Buenos Aires, where we are now.  We stayed in a hotel for the first week, and we have moved into a two bedroom apartment, where we will staying for the remainder of our stay here.  In late June, we will leave Argentina, and take a ferry to Montevideo, where we will rent a car, which we will have during our week stay in Punta de Este (a resort area in Uruguay) which, "in season" is the South American playground for the Rich and Famous...... which explains why we are going there "off season" (don't forget,....it is winter here).

After Punta, we will go back to Montevideo and stay for, as yet, an undetermined period..  We've really enjoyed the way we approached Buenos Aires....which involved getting a lot of the initial touristy stuff out of the way, and basically assuming the role of residents (we already have our favorite "hang out" spots, restaurants, etc.....).  We essentially work during the day, when the market is open (just as we did in Denver), and then decide if we want to head out, or cook in the apartment.  We plan on approaching our time in Montevideo the same way. (more)

Cuzzin Ricky and his lovely C/R GF are in South America checking out suitable places to pitch their tent.  Very interesting journal, with lots of nice pictures of women and food.  Which just reminded me of this story.

Ricky was the Club Officer at Fort Eustis in the 70's.  I dropped by to see him when in the area, and was shown into his very spacious office.  Just as I entered the room a completely nude girl comes walking out of the bathroom.  Ricky introduces me, and she leaves.

I am slack-jawed.

Ricky explains that because the civilian bars around Eustis all have nude dancing, he was increasingly unable to meet his budge which depended on liquor profit.  So ... .  The dancers used his bathroom to changw into their skin.

I am not making that up.

In February 2011, Bush was forced to cancel a scheduled appearance in Geneva, Switzerland after human rights groups filed a criminal complaint charging him with violating international treaties against torture.

His trouble increased dramatically a year ago when Bush -- along with former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and several other top Bush administration officials -- were convicted of war crimes in absentia by a special war crimes tribunal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission was convened and conducted according to internationally recognized procedures and rules of evidence, and the week-long hearing ended with the five-member panel unanimously delivering guilty verdicts.
